Jmasm 53: Miccerird, Michael Lance
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Fortran 77 and 90 modules (REALPOPS.lib) exist for invoking the 8 distributions estimated by Micceri (1989). These respective modules were created by Sawilowsky et al. (1990) and Sawilowsky and Fahoome (2003). The MicceriRD (Micceri’s Real Distributions) Python package was created because Python is increasingly used for data analysis and, in some cases, Monte Carlo simulations.

Bayesian Analysis Of Extended Cox Model With Time-Varying Covariates Using Bootstrap Prior, Oyebayo R. Olaniran, Mohd Asrul A. Abdullah
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
A new Bayesian estimation procedure for extended cox model with time varying covariate was presented. The prior was determined using bootstrapping technique within the framework of parametric empirical Bayes. The efficiency of the proposed method was observed using Monte Carlo simulation of extended Cox model with time varying covariates under varying scenarios. Validity of the proposed method was also ascertained using real life data set of Stanford heart transplant. Comparison of the proposed method with its competitor established appreciable supremacy of the method.
Identifying Which Of J Independent Binomial Distributions Has The Largest Probability Of Success, Rand Wilcox
Identifying Which Of J Independent Binomial Distributions Has The Largest Probability Of Success, Rand Wilcox
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Let p1,…, pJ denote the probability of a success for J independent random variables having a binomial distribution and let p(1) ≤ … ≤ p(J) denote these probabilities written in ascending order. The goal is to make a decision about which group has the largest probability of a success, p(J). Let p̂1,…, p̂J denote estimates of p1,…,pJ, respectively. The strategy is to test J − 1 hypotheses comparing the group with the largest estimate to each of the J − 1 …
Regression: Determining Which Of P Independent Variables Has The Largest Or Smallest Correlation With The Dependent Variable, Plus Results On Ordering The Correlations Winsorized, Rand Wilcox
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
In a regression context, consider p independent variables and a single dependent variable. The paper addresses two goals. The first is to determine the extent it is reasonable to make a decision about whether the largest estimate of the Winsorized correlations corresponds to the independent variable that has the largest population Winsorized correlation. The second is to determine the extent it is reasonable to decide that the order of the estimates of the Winsorized correlations correctly reflects the true ordering. Both goals are addressed by testing relevant hypotheses. Results in Wilcox (in press a) suggest using a multiple comparisons procedure …

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
"As a group we learned and explored all of the intricacies of diversity, which helped us to examine our own experiences, beliefs, and actions. I am very glad that I was given the opportunity to participate in UMDLI. I didn't really know what to expect at first, but the experience has affected me in so many ways. I have learned so much through readings, videos, presentations, conversations and activities, I have met amazing people that I hope will remain my friends long after we depart, and I have looked deeply into my own experiences and beliefs. I hope that we …

Using Multi-Sensory And Multi-Dimensional Immersive Virtual Reality In Participatory Planning, Mahbubur Meenar, Jennifer L. Kitson
Using Multi-Sensory And Multi-Dimensional Immersive Virtual Reality In Participatory Planning, Mahbubur Meenar, Jennifer L. Kitson
School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research
In the last two decades, urban planners have embraced digital technologies to complement traditional public participation processes; research on the impact of smarter digital instruments, such as immersive virtual reality (IVR), however, is scant. We recruited 40 focus group participants to explore various formats of spatial planning scenario simulations in Glassboro, NJ, USA. Our study finds that the level of participation, memory recalls of scenarios, and emotional responses to design proposals are higher with multi-sensory and multi-dimensional IVR simulations than with standard presentations such as 2D videos of 3D model simulations, coupled with verbal presentations. We also discuss the limitations …
Super Bowl Ads And The Donald Trump Culture War, Jessica Barron
Super Bowl Ads And The Donald Trump Culture War, Jessica Barron
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There have been studies that have looked at how television commercials represent or portray minorities such as gender or race. Very few have tried to look at how commercials compare to the culture, specifically in regards to a presidential term and the culture they promote. This present study examines Super Bowl commercials during the culture war led by the Donald Trump administration and looks to discover if these advertisements are becoming more diverse in comparison to the previous presidency. Using content analysis, the researcher analyzed and compared 50 commercials from three different time periods 2009-2010, 2013-2014, and 2017-2018. The categories …
All Together Now: Effects Of Simultaneous Presentation And Stimulus Complexity On Categorization Performance And Strategy Preferences, Reshma Gouravajhala
All Together Now: Effects Of Simultaneous Presentation And Stimulus Complexity On Categorization Performance And Strategy Preferences, Reshma Gouravajhala
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present study investigated the effects of simultaneous (relative to sequential) presentation on participants’ learning of both simple (Experiment 1) and complex (Experiment 2) categories. Previous research has studied the impact of presentation mode on categorization of novel transfer objects, but the present study is the first to date that also examined its influence on learners’ strategy preferences. Participants were trained (using a blocked observational training procedure) on two categories of abstract shapes that were defined by a bi-dimensional disjunctive rule. Some participants were shown objects sequentially, while others were presented with an organized simultaneous display depicting all to-be-learned stimuli …

Triple Threat Gateway? Respiratory Health, Demographics And Land Use In Metro East St. Louis, Missouri-Illinois, Usa, Stacey R. Brown-Amilian
International Journal of Geospatial and Environmental Research
This paper examines a triple threat for residents of two counties in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Previous environmental justice research has focused on demographics and toxic facilities. This research builds upon those assessments by incorporating hospital discharge data and demographics as well as three different types of pollution sources. Air pollution monitors were unavailable to use during the time period of 2009-2011, therefore proxy measures of pollution in the form of major roadways, industrial land use parcels, and toxic facility information from the EPA Toxic Release Inventory are utilized. This study integrates both spatial coincidence and proximity analysis methods …

Animal Sentience
Mikhalevich & Powell argue that the exclusion of the vast majority of arthropods from moral standing is unwarranted, particularly given the purported evidence for cognition and sentience in these organisms. The implied association between consciousness and moral standing is questionable and their assumption that rich forms of cognition and flexible behavior are dependent on phenomenal consciousness needs to be reconsidered in light of current neuroscientific evidence. We conclude by proposing a neural algorithmic approach for deciphering whether organisms are capable of subjective experience.

The Goldstone Commission In South Africa’S Transition: Linking Gradual Institutional Change And Information-Gathering Institutions, Tammy Lambert
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Used by states to investigate patterns of past human rights abuses, truth commissions have garnered considerable consensus for their value in addressing past harms and repression. Many still tout the South African model as a success story of truth commissions. This dissertation provides answers to two questions. First, what role, if any, did earlier investigative institutions play in shaping South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC)? The dissertation argues that the Commission of Inquiry for the Prevention of Public Violence and Intimidation, also known as the Goldstone Commission, played a central role in transforming information- gathering measures in South Africa. …
