The Full Impact Of The Affordable Care Act On Political Participation, Charles J. Courtemanche, James Marton, Aaron Yelowitz
The Full Impact Of The Affordable Care Act On Political Participation, Charles J. Courtemanche, James Marton, Aaron Yelowitz
Economics Faculty Publications
This article examines the impact of both the Medicaid expansion and the private insurance-related components of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on voter turnout and registration. We employ a difference-in-difference-in-differences identification strategy exploiting variation over time, state Medicaid expansion status, and within-state local area pre-ACA uninsured rates. Using data between 2006 and 2016 from the November Current Population Survey and the Census Bureau's Small Area Health Insurance Estimates, our results suggest little effect of the ACA on voter turnout or registration.
Identifying Facets Of Reader-Generated Online Reviews Of Children’S Books Based On A Textual Analysis Approach, Yunseon Choi, Soohyung Joo
Identifying Facets Of Reader-Generated Online Reviews Of Children’S Books Based On A Textual Analysis Approach, Yunseon Choi, Soohyung Joo
Information Science Faculty Publications
With the increasing popularity of social media, online reviews have become one of the primary information sources for book selection. Prior studies have analyzed online reviews, mostly in the domain of business. However, little research has examined the content of online book reviews of children’s books. Book reviews generated by book readers contain different aspects of information, such as opinions, feedback, or emotional responses, from the perspectives of readers. This study explores what aspects of the books are addressed in readers’ reviews, and then it intends to identify categorical features or facets of online book reviews of children’s books. We …
The 2016 Bernie Sanders Campaign: American Socialist Populism, Judson C. Abraham
The 2016 Bernie Sanders Campaign: American Socialist Populism, Judson C. Abraham
disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory
Some socialists criticize Bernie Sanders’s 2016 presidential campaign, taking issue with the senator’s nationalism, vague presentation of socialism and revolution, and seeming preoccupation with class at the expense of attention to racism. This article draws from Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe’s theorization of populism to depict Sanders’s campaign as a legitimately socialist project. Laclau and Mouffe claim that left populism may evolve into socialism under certain conditions. One may expect Sanders’s populism to empower previously uncommitted people to make socialist demands.

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory
The 2019-2020 disClosure collective is thrilled to present the 29th volume of disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory. This volume focuses on theories of populism and brings together a wide range of perspectives relating to the phenomenon, experience, and study of populism. The recent uptick in populism signals political, economic, and/or social unrest across the globe, yet, populism remains a phenomenon that is difficult to define. Our goal with this volume was not to define populism. Instead, this issue engages conversations about the various types and origins of populisms, as it is our belief that the development and definition …
Nationalpopulism, Right And Left: The Social-National Synthesis Today, Daniel Rueda
Nationalpopulism, Right And Left: The Social-National Synthesis Today, Daniel Rueda
disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory
For most of the postwar period the idea of merging socialist (or popular) and nationalist elements was marginal in Europe. But in the last two decades we have been witnessing a new form of social-national synthesis: nationalpopulism. This article examines this resurgence by comparing right-wing nationalpopulism and left-wing nationalpopulism. In order to do so, it focuses on four European countries: France, Italy, Greece and Spain. While there are both policy and discursive similarities between these two forms of nationalpopulism, this article argues that they are fundamentally different and belong to antagonistic ideological factions.

Preparing Communities For The Golden Years: Approaches For Developing Age-Friendly Communities For Seniors, Shivi Darubra
Preparing Communities For The Golden Years: Approaches For Developing Age-Friendly Communities For Seniors, Shivi Darubra
MPA Major Research Papers
The heterogeneous nature of aging has led policymakers to reconsider how seniors are impacted by localized decision-making and implementation efforts (Remillard-Boilard, 2018). Forecasted by the World Health Organization (WHO), the population of seniors (60+) is expected to reach over two billion worldwide, surpassing the number of children being born across the world for the first time in human history (United Nations, 2006). To better address the local challenges faced by the aging population, WHO devised an Age-Friendly Communities (AFC) framework to guide urban communities into redesigning policy and intervention models to better reflect the needs of seniors while also allowing …
Addressing Water Security Through First Nations-Municipal Cooperation, Corrine Codina
Addressing Water Security Through First Nations-Municipal Cooperation, Corrine Codina
MPA Major Research Papers
To what extent can municipalities support a multi-barrier approach (MBA) to improving First Nations water security in Ontario? Through a systematic content analysis of legislation, standards, guidelines, and reports, capacities of First Nations and municipalities to implement the MBA are identified in relation to the approach’s three barriers: source water protection, water treatment systems, and water distribution systems. The results of this paper show that municipalities are equipped with the capacities to support a First Nations’ MBA, and are particularly well equipped in their managerial, technical, and political capacities to support efforts of source water protection. Water treatment and distribution, …
Corporate Structures In Transit: Comparing The Development Of Intermunicipal Transit In British Columbia And Ontario And Why Ontario Should Consider Reform, Luke Charlton
MPA Major Research Papers
This paper will argue for changes in the corporate structure of transit authorities in Ontario by contrasting their effectiveness in producing intermunicipal transit with British Columbia’s transit authorities. It is well established that transit is correlated to many benefits: socioeconomic opportunities, increased quality of life, boosting the local economy, and reducing the environmental impact of transportation. However, one area of neglect within Ontario has been the development of intermunicipal transit within Ontario outside of the Greater Toronto Area. British Columbia proves that with a centripetal authority structure (power towards the centre), transit organizations can be adaptive and cooperative. Ontario’s centrifugal …
Going Back: The Case For Remunicipalization: Analyzing The Ottawa Case To Understand Why Municipalities May Remunicipalize A Service Instead Of Choosing Another Private Contractor, Stephen Coppola
MPA Major Research Papers
With the wave of New Public Management, privatization of services in the public sector became a popular choice among government managers who believed this would improve the quality of services while also lowering costs. This turned out to not always be the case, and municipalities have slowly begun to turn towards the remunicipalization of services that were once contracted out. The purpose of this research paper is to take a Canadian case of remunicipalization and analyze what the primary reasons were for remunicipalization. The city of Ottawa served as the case example and the research paper identified that the City …
Community Improvement Plans: An Analysis Of Content And Outcomes Of Community Improvement Plans In Ontario, Paul Pirri
Community Improvement Plans: An Analysis Of Content And Outcomes Of Community Improvement Plans In Ontario, Paul Pirri
MPA Major Research Papers
Community Improvement Plans are an often used, but seldom studied economic development and planning tool used to spur economic growth within an economically depressed area. But are they effective? This paper answers two questions concerning Community Improvement Plans. First, “How are Community Improvement Plans used in the Province of Ontario?”; and second, “Is the execution of these plans resulting in greater economic prosperity for the communities that have enacted them?”. This work is undertaken by reviewing the content of 202 Community Improvement Plans across the Province of Ontario. Regression tests on municipal assessments from 2001-2018 to determine what effect the …

Oh Caledonia! Our Home Or Native Land? Haldimand County’S Role In The Caledonia Land Dispute, 2005-2016, Aren Plante
MPA Major Research Papers
In 2006, when over a dozen protesters from the Six Nations took control of the Douglas Creek and rechristened the land Kanonhstation, the Caledonia land dispute went from being a local clash to a national story. In recent years, land disputes between Indigenous Peoples and the Canadian state have inaugurated much scholarly intrigue. Despite the topic’s popularity, the vast majority of material examining land disputes looks at the role of First Nations, the federal government, the provincial government, and provincial police departments; however, nothing has been written on the part municipalities play in land disputes. The research questions for this …
Effects Of Vaping On Positive Affect, Negative Affect, And Stress: A Pilot Study Of A College Sample, Jen Mele, Emily Lamison
Effects Of Vaping On Positive Affect, Negative Affect, And Stress: A Pilot Study Of A College Sample, Jen Mele, Emily Lamison
Summer Scholarship, Creative Arts and Research Projects (SCARP)
As it is a relatively new concept, there is little research on the topic of vaping and e-cigarette usage among young adults. These practices were branded as being a healthier alternative to smoking, and while this may be true, young adults who do not already engage in smoking have become increasingly more likely to start vaping. While the long term effects of vaping and e-cigarette use are still unknown, they have been linked to several changes in affect and stress levels. To explore the reasons that college-aged young adults are starting to use e-cigarettes and how their behaviors might be …

Using 'Big Data' To Explain Visits To Lakes In 17 Us States, Erik Nelson, Maggie Rogers, Spencer Wood, Jesse Chung, Bonnie Keeler
Economics Department Working Paper Series
We use large dataset on US lakes from 17 states to estimate the relationship between summertime visits to lakes as proxied by social media use and the lakes' water quality, amenities, and surrounding landscape features and socioeconomic conditions. Prior to estimating these relationships we worked on 1) selecting a parsimonious set of explanatory variables from a roster of more than 100 lake attributes and 2) accounting for the non-random pattern of missing water quality data. These steps 1) improved the interpretability of the estimated visit models and 2) widened our estimated models' scope of statistical inference. We used Machine Learning …
Parent-Directed Gratitude: An Investigation Of A Novel Intervention And Possible Mechanisms Between Gratitude And Well-Being, Margaret Smith
Parent-Directed Gratitude: An Investigation Of A Novel Intervention And Possible Mechanisms Between Gratitude And Well-Being, Margaret Smith
Psychology Theses and Dissertations
First-year college students are vulnerable to developing psychopathology during the transition to college. Gratitude interventions have been effective at decreasing depressive symptoms and increasing well-being. There are mixed findings on whether gratitude directed toward a specific person is more effective than a general expression of gratitude. The present investigation has two research aims from a data collection involving a three-group randomized gratitude intervention study and a short-term longitudinal mediation model. The first research aim evaluated group comparisons related to well-being, positive affect, satisfaction with life, depressive symptoms, and quality of the parent-child relationship. The second research aim investigated the mechanisms …

Born-Digital Preservation: The Art Of Archiving Photos With Script And Batch Processing, Rachel S. Evans, Leslie Grove, Sharon Bradley
Articles, Chapters and Online Publications
With our IT department preparing to upgrade the University of Georgia’s Alexander Campbell King Law Library (UGA Law Library) website from Drupal 7 to 8 this fall, a web developer, an archivist, and a librarian teamed up a year ago to make plans for preserving thousands of born-digital images. We wanted to harvest photographs housed only in web-based photo galleries on the law school website and import them into our repository’s collection. The problem? There were five types of online photo galleries, and our current repository did not include appropriate categories for all of the photographs. The solution? Expand our …

Mother-Child Informant Discrepancies Of Child Internalizing Symptoms: Maternal Depression, Mother-Child Relationship Quality, And Family Environment As Moderators, Sharyl Esther Wee
Psychology Theses and Dissertations
In the United States, 14.3% of adolescents have experienced an internalizing disorder. There are, however, often large discrepancies between parent and child reports of the child’s symptoms, which can affect diagnoses and treatment outcomes (Hawley & Weisz, 2003; Kazdin, 1989). Maternal depressive symptoms have been associated with mother-child informant discrepancies of child internalizing symptoms (e.g., Chi & Hinshaw, 2002). Other characteristics of the parent-child relationship and family environment that may predict informant discrepancies have only been examined limitedly (e.g., Treutler & Epkins, 2003). The purpose of the present study was to test the extent to which maternal, family, and child …
