Success And Sustainability Of Sponsored International Development Programs In Education: A Narrative Inquiry, Sara Beth Leikin
Success And Sustainability Of Sponsored International Development Programs In Education: A Narrative Inquiry, Sara Beth Leikin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In a 2008 working paper published by the U.S. Agency for International Development, the authors lamented that, despite billions of dollars in investment in global education initiatives, access to education had been improved in targeted areas, but the return on investment with regards to learning outcomes was “much less impressive” (Gillies & Jester Quijada, 2008). From 2012-2017, USAID engaged in the Egypt STEM Schools Project (ESSP) along with four partner organizations with the goal of building model science and mathematics public schools that would challenge the educational status quo by providing students with hands-on, constructivist learning and providing an alternative …
Safeguarding Assamese Culture Through Indigenous Librarianship: Awareness Among The Library Professionals And Students Of Ustm, Rajesh Chutia, Bedanta Kalita
Safeguarding Assamese Culture Through Indigenous Librarianship: Awareness Among The Library Professionals And Students Of Ustm, Rajesh Chutia, Bedanta Kalita
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
In the present day context, indigenous knowledge is unraveled and isolated in many parts of the world. Most of the indigenous knowledge is not documented, in spite of being a vital cradle of information. It is generally transferred orally from generation to generation; wherein the role of Libraries should be to preserve and disseminate such indigenous treasure among the common masses, especially the users. Considering its usefulness in uplifting one’s ethnic cultural characteristics, the aim of the study is to find out the level of awareness among library and information science professionals and students on the importance of indigenous knowledge …

Usability Analysis Of Indian Institutes Of Science Education And Research (Iisers) Library Websites: A Study, Manish Kumar Yadav, Rajani Mishra
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The accessibility, efficiency, and effectiveness of the websites of Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) libraries are evaluated in this paper. Online survey and observation methods were considered suitable for conducting the research. A Checklist was prepared and used for the data collection from the websites of IISERs. Study shows that selected IISER libraries have helpful websites but have overlooked the essential usability characteristics and tend to be in the primitive phase. Most of the websites of the selected IISER libraries were relatively simple. They had fundamental and popular usability characteristics in terms of general library information, search …

Refusing To Concede The Election: Defending Democracy By Expanding The G7 Rapid Response Mechanism, Taylor Hayes
Refusing To Concede The Election: Defending Democracy By Expanding The G7 Rapid Response Mechanism, Taylor Hayes
Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs
The past decade is rife with examples of actions by nefarious groups to improperly interfere in democratic elections around the world, and it is time that democratic nations band together to effectively combat these interference efforts. More than two dozen nations around the world have fallen victim to some form of election interference. The United States and its allies have traced many of these interference campaigns to state actors, particularly the Russian government.
In 2018, the Group of Seven (G7) announced the creation of a Rapid Response Mechanism (G7 RRM). The aim of the G7 RRM is to limit the …
An Evaluation Of The Water-Energy-Food Nexus And Its Alignment With The Sustainable Development Goals, Waseem Ahmad Qureshi
An Evaluation Of The Water-Energy-Food Nexus And Its Alignment With The Sustainable Development Goals, Waseem Ahmad Qureshi
Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs
Since 2011, the water–energy–food (WEF) nexus has become a popular term, widely deliberated upon by policymakers and scholars alike around the world. It has been referred to with different acronyms, depending upon their foci of interest: WEF for hydro-centric researchers; EFW for energy securitization policy researchers; and FEW for agrarian-based policy frameworks. By contrast, environmentalists, who like to include the variable of climate change within the nexus to use it as a primary element of research, prefer to call it the CLEW (climate–land–energy–water) nexus. This paper is an attempt to explain the WEF nexus in relation to the varied interpretations …
"Ufo": When The American Doctrine Of Ripeness Visited Israel, Mohammed S. Wattad
"Ufo": When The American Doctrine Of Ripeness Visited Israel, Mohammed S. Wattad
Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs
As part of the gradual preparation for the incorporation of the American ripeness doctrine into Israeli law, it has been justified on a number of grounds. A fundamental discussion of the scope of the doctrine may be found in three important legal cases, which coined the term “the ripeness doctrine, Israel style.” A review of these cases reveals that while there is widespread consensus among the Israeli Supreme Court justices regarding the actual adoption of the ripeness doctrine, there is disagreement – and even confusion – regarding the manner of its implementation. In this article, I would like to present …

Private Equity And Venture Capital In Sport: Who Is Receiving Funding And What Factors Influence Funding, Timothy Koba
Private Equity And Venture Capital In Sport: Who Is Receiving Funding And What Factors Influence Funding, Timothy Koba
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
Small business survival is paramount to the vibrant business community in the United States with over 400,000 new business created annually. While the cost of starting a business can vary, the necessity of access to available capital is vital for growth. As an industry, sport comprises several sectors of the economy with little understanding of the private equity market that exists for funding of these businesses. This paper investigates the $9.2 Billion private equity marketplace for sport, fitness and athletic businesses in the United States between 2010 and 2020. The results of the study demonstrate the importance of revenue and …
Understanding The Roles Of Public Libraries And Digital Exclusion Through Critical Race Theory: An Exploratory Study Of People Of Color In California Affected By The Digital Divide And The Pandemic, Raymond Pun
Urban Library Journal
With the arrival of COVID-19, public libraries have been closed or partially re-opened in various phases. This qualitative study explores the lived experiences of select library users in California, particularly people of color who experience digital exclusion, and how they use their public libraries prior to and during the pandemic. The study is guided by two research questions: 1. What are the barriers in using public libraries’ technology resources experienced by patrons of color before and during the pandemic? 2. What are their perspectives, purposes, and beliefs in using technologies in the public library before and during the pandemic? Using …

Gender Differences In Ncaa Non-Revenue Sports: An Examination Of Men’S And Women’S Soccer Coaching Salaries, David Eaton, Martin Milkman
Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity
This paper examines the determinants of head coaching salaries in men’s and women’s collegiate soccer. Both of these sports are considered non-revenue sports, and thus differences in sports revenues should not impact coaching salaries. We analyze salaries of head coaches in these sports to determine if i) coaches in women’s soccer earn systematically less than coaches of men’s soccer, and ii) whether there is a difference in salaries between male and female coaches of women’s soccer. We find that salaries for coaches of women’s soccer are lower than those for men’s soccer. We also find that there is no statistically …
Practical Strategies For Managing Emotions And Stress In The Elusive Search For Work-Life Balance, Jennifer C. Veilleux
Practical Strategies For Managing Emotions And Stress In The Elusive Search For Work-Life Balance, Jennifer C. Veilleux
TFSC Publications and Presentations
In this talk, Dr. Veilleux discussed the rationale for thinking about work-life integration rather than work-life balance, while validating the importance of recognizing the emotional repercussions of feeling a conflict between the work and non-work portions of life. She provided a three-step strategy for recognizing the “message” of an emotion, with the goal of helping people recognize that emotions do not occur about things that do not matter, and thus identifying and processing emotions about stressful experiences (including conflicts between work and life) can be crucial steps toward psychological well-being.

The Feasibility Of Renewable Natural Gas In New Jersey, Anneliese Dyer, Amelia Christine Miller, Brianna Chandra, Juan Galindo Maza, Carley Tran, Justin Bates, Vicky Olivier, Amy Tuininga
Publications
With traditional natural gas being one of the top options for heating in the United States and the present threat of climate change, there is a demand for an alternative clean fuel source. A Renewable Natural Gas Implementation Decision-Making Conceptual Model was created to provide a framework for considering the feasibility of renewable natural gas (RNG) projects and applied to New Jersey, specifically investigating landfills and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Data from the US EPA’s Landfill Methane Outreach Program and New Jersey’s Department of Environmental Protection Sewage Sludge databases were used to identify seven landfills and 22 WWTPs as possible …

The Influence Of Adverse Childhood Experiences On Internalizing And Externalizing Problems In Early Adulthood: Evidence Of A Gene × Environment × Sex Interaction, Emily M. Wright, Joseph A. Schwartz
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Background
Although adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have negative effects on subsequent wellbeing, questions remain regarding how and why they do so. Sex, environmental effects, and genetic influences may play a role in both one’s exposure to ACEs as well as one’s reactions to ACEs.
Objective
To understand the combined genetic and environmental influences on males’ and females’ exposure and reactions to ACEs, and to determine whether sex differences in offending and depressive symptoms were partially impacted by genetic influences.
Methods
We employed a sample of monozygotic twins (n = 217 pairs), same-sex dizygotic twins (n = 185 …

One in every twenty-five persons in America is a racial/ethnic minority who lives in a rural area. Our objective was to summarize how racism and, subsequently, the social determinants of health disproportionately affect rural racial/ethnic minority populations, provide a review of the cancer disparities experienced by rural racial/ethnic minority groups, and recommend policy, research, and intervention approaches to reduce these disparities. We found that rural Black and American Indian/Alaska Native populations experience greater poverty and lack of access to care, which expose them to greater risk of developing cancer and experiencing poorer cancer outcomes in treatment and ultimately survival. There …

Urban-Rural Differences In Covid-19 Exposures And Outcomes In The South: A Preliminary Analysis Of South Carolina, Qian Huang, Sarah Jackson, Sahar Derakhshan, Logan Lee, Erika Pham, Amber Jackson, Susan L. Cutter
Faculty Publications
As the COVID-19 pandemic moved beyond the initial heavily impacted and urbanized Northeast region of the United States, hotspots of cases in other urban areas ensued across the country in early 2020. In South Carolina, the spatial and temporal patterns were different, initially concentrating in small towns within metro counties, then diffusing to centralized urban areas and rural areas. When mitigation restrictions were relaxed, hotspots reappeared in the major cities. This paper examines the county-scale spatial and temporal patterns of confirmed cases of COVID-19 for South Carolina from March 1st—September 5th, 2020. We first describe the initial diffusion of the …
Golf Brain: A Neuropsychological Study Of Performance In Competition, Taylor S. Broughton
Golf Brain: A Neuropsychological Study Of Performance In Competition, Taylor S. Broughton
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Golf, as a sport, has been described by its masters as a mental game first and a technical skill second. Many players logged countless practice hours only to find suboptimal performance in tournaments; when it matters the most. I investigated the relationship between executive functioning specific to decision-making under anxious arousal and golfers’ performance under anxious arousal. I used a repeated measures design including variety of executive functioning tests to examine participants’ abilities. Participants were recruited from western Oregon including collegiate golfers and university students, and were grouped into non-golfers and golfer groups based on whether they played golf and …

Funders and policy makers have strongly recommended the uptake of the FAIR principles in scientific data management. Several initiatives are working on the implementation of the principles and standardized applications to systematically evaluate data FAIRness. This paper presents practical solutions, namely metrics and tools, developed by the FAIRsFAIR project to pilot the FAIR assessment of research data objects in trustworthy data repositories. The metrics are mainly built on the indicators developed by the RDA FAIR Data Maturity Model Working Group. The tools’ design and evaluation followed an iterative process. We present two applications of the metrics: an awareness-raising self-assessment tool …

Public Notes To The Rescue! Connecting Resources, Services, And Practices In The Library Catalog, Rebecca Hunnicutt, Jeffrey Mortimore
Library Faculty Presentations
Presentation given by Georgia Southern faculty members Rebecca Hunnicutt and Jeffrey Mortimore at the Catalog Management Interest Group, ALA Core Virtual Interest Group.
Communicating connections between library resources, services, and practices is challenging, especially via the catalog. How do we help researchers find special collection items, locate finding aids, and schedule viewings? How do we communicate that demand-driven ebooks are briefly available, but then must be requested for purchase? To use resources effectively, patrons need to be aware of related services and practices but relaying that information can be difficult. What if the catalog is the patron’s only point of …
