The Effects Of States’ Economic Conditions On The Quality Of Public Education System, Huan Yang Feb 2021

The Effects Of States’ Economic Conditions On The Quality Of Public Education System, Huan Yang

Honors College Theses

Many previous researchers have looked at the effects of education on certain economic factors. However, this paper investigates the topic of education from a different perspective: using data of several economic factors for all 50 states in America from the year of 2017 and an education ranking system from U.S. News & World Report, this paper analyzes the effects of a state’s economic conditions on its quality of public education system through a cross-sectional model. Results from the analysis show that poverty rate, current expenditure per pupil, public high school graduation rate, and share of revenues for public elementary and …

Mind Your Language: The Effects Of Linguistic Ostracism On Interpersonal Work Behaviors, John Fiset, Devasheesh P. Bhave Feb 2021

Mind Your Language: The Effects Of Linguistic Ostracism On Interpersonal Work Behaviors, John Fiset, Devasheesh P. Bhave

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Business and demographic trends are conflating to bring language issues at work to the forefront. Although language has an inherent capacity for creating interpersonal bonds, it can also serve as a means of exclusion. The construct of linguistic ostracism encapsulates this phenomenon. Drawing on ethnolinguistic identity theory, we identify how linguistic ostracism influences two interpersonal work behaviors: interpersonal citizenship and interpersonal deviance. We conduct a set of studies that uses multisource data, data across time, and data from three countries. Our results reveal that linguistic ostracism was associated with the enactment of lower interpersonal citizenship behaviors and higher interpersonal deviance …

Blowing Hot And Cold In Litigation: Abuse Of Process, Election Or Approbation And Reprobation? Bwg V Bwf [2020] Sgca 36, Dorcas Quek Anderson

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This note analyses the Singapore Court of Appeal’s decision in BWG v BWF which allowed the adoption of inconsistent positions across related court proceedings against different parties. The decision raises crucial questions on the limits to be imposed on a party’s freedom to pursue opposing rights in litigation, and how the doctrines of abuse of process, election by waiver, and approbation and reprobation should be applied. It is argued that the court’s application of the abuse of process doctrine obscured the central exercise of assessing all the relevant interests and circumstances. The differing rationales underlying the common law doctrine of …

Trimmed Mean Group Estimation, Yoonseok Lee, Donggyu Sul Feb 2021

Trimmed Mean Group Estimation, Yoonseok Lee, Donggyu Sul

Center for Policy Research

This paper develops robust panel estimation in the form of trimmed mean group estimation for potentially heterogenous panel regression models. It trims outlying individuals of which the sample variances of regressors are either extremely small or large. The limiting distribution of the trimmed estimator can be obtained in a similar way to the standard mean group estimator, provided the random coefficients are conditionally homoskedastic. We consider two trimming methods. The first one is based on the order statistic of the sample variance of each regressor. The second one is based on the Mahalanobis depth of the sample variances of regressors. …

Depth-Weighted Forecast Combination: Application To Covid-19 Cases, Yoonseok Lee, Donggyu Sul Feb 2021

Depth-Weighted Forecast Combination: Application To Covid-19 Cases, Yoonseok Lee, Donggyu Sul

Center for Policy Research

We develop a novel forecast combination based on the order statistics of individual predictability when many forecasts are available. To this end, we define the notion of forecast depth, which measures the size of forecast errors during the training period and provides a ranking among different forecast models. The forecast combination is in the form of a depth-weighted trimmed mean, where the group of models with the worst forecasting performance during the training period is dropped. We derive the limiting distribution of the depth-weighted forecast combination, based on which we can readily construct forecast confidence intervals. Using this novel forecast …

The Effect Of Industrial Robots On Workplace Safety, Ling Li, Perry Singleton Feb 2021

The Effect Of Industrial Robots On Workplace Safety, Ling Li, Perry Singleton

Center for Policy Research

This study measures the effect of industrial robots on workplace safety at the commuting zone level, exploiting potentially exogenous variation in robot exposure due to technological progress. Workplace safety is measured by workers involved in severe or fatal accidents inspected by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. From 2000 to 2007, we find that one additional robot in exposure per 1,000 workers decreased the OSHA accident rate at the mean by 15.1 percent. We also find that robot exposure decreased OSHA violations and accidents more likely to be affected by robot penetration, specifically those involving machinery or electrical.

Panel Threshold Regression With Unobserved Individual-Specific Threshold Effects, Ping Yu, Peter C. B. Phillips, Shengjie Hong Feb 2021

Panel Threshold Regression With Unobserved Individual-Specific Threshold Effects, Ping Yu, Peter C. B. Phillips, Shengjie Hong

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper studies the estimation and inferences in panel threshold regression with unobserved individual-specific threshold effects which is important from the practical perspective and is a distinguishing feature from traditional linear panel data models. It is shown that the within-regime differencing in the static model or the within-regime first-differencing in the dynamic model cannot generate consistent estimators of the threshold, so the correlated random effects models are suggested to handle the endogeneity in such general panel threshold models. We provide a unified estimation and inference framework that is valid for both the static and dynamic models and regardless of whether …

The Politics Of Hip Hop: A Political Analysis Of Hip Hop’S History And Its Complicated Relationship With Capitalism, Danielle Garcia Feb 2021

The Politics Of Hip Hop: A Political Analysis Of Hip Hop’S History And Its Complicated Relationship With Capitalism, Danielle Garcia

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis examines the emergence of the Hip Hop movement in the 1970s in areas of New York City often referred to more generally as the South Bronx. Focusing mostly on the 1970s and 1980s, this thesis explores the underlying conditions that Hip Hop was born out of. Influenced by both global and national politics, Hip Hop provided a common space for underrepresented individuals and groups to unify, create common identities, and liberate themselves from the oppressive norms and political activity of a rich, mostly white, and dominant American society that tried to erase or silence them. This revolutionary aspect …

In The Shadow Of China: Autonomy Movements And Local Government Responses In Hong Kong, Jessica M. Mahlbacher Feb 2021

In The Shadow Of China: Autonomy Movements And Local Government Responses In Hong Kong, Jessica M. Mahlbacher

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In the past few years, Hong Kong, a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, has had formidable autonomy movements that have managed to force the territory’s Chief Executive to withdraw legislation that would have allowed extradition to other parts of China. Often the federalism literature investigates contentious relationships between a regional government and a central government. However, in Hong Kong, the local government often relies on the Chinese state and local elite are largely integrationist in orientation. What conditions empower grassroots forces to influence the local government’s implementation of autonomy from central government institutions? While scholars have …

Smashing Solidarity: Two New York Strikes At The Start Of The Postwar Wave, Joseph D. Parziale Feb 2021

Smashing Solidarity: Two New York Strikes At The Start Of The Postwar Wave, Joseph D. Parziale

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Two strikes in New York at the beginning of the massive 1945-46 strike wave—one by elevator operators in commercial buildings and another by dock workers throughout the Port of New York—can help us better understand a moment when workers exhibited a profound sense of themselves as a class, while their rivals in the shop, the corporate boardroom, and the halls of power fought vigorously to dispel the notion that workers divided by geography, industry, race, nationality, and gender were right to see their fates as intertwined. Historians’ focus on the economic issues at stake in the major strikes of the …

Influence Of Demographic, Clinical, And Neuroimaging Variables On Neuropsychological Recovery Trajectories After Moderate-To-Severe Traumatic Brain Injury, Elizabeth J. Leif Feb 2021

Influence Of Demographic, Clinical, And Neuroimaging Variables On Neuropsychological Recovery Trajectories After Moderate-To-Severe Traumatic Brain Injury, Elizabeth J. Leif

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is prevalent in people of all ages and all walks of life. Cognitive deficits are common after TBI and the recovery patterns are known to be variable across individuals. The current study investigates diffuse axonal injury (DAI), cerebral blood flow (CBF), and focal lesions, in addition to post-traumatic amnesia (PTA), as possible predictors of cognitive trajectory in moderate-to-severe TBI patients. Cognitive trajectory was evaluated with a battery of neuropsychological tests that were combined into three domains: processing speed, verbal learning, and executive function. Patients (N=44) were tested three times at 3, 6, and 12 months post-injury. …

The Substation: How Many More Canaries In The Coal Mine?, Su Fern Hoe Feb 2021

The Substation: How Many More Canaries In The Coal Mine?, Su Fern Hoe

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Since 1990, The Substation has been the sole occupant of the conserved building at 45 Armenian Street. Over the years, it has transformed the once-abandoned power station into Singapore’s first artist-led multi-disciplinary arts centre. However, in February 2021, The Substation was officially asked to vacate the building. Although the current situation facing The Substation is not new or unique, its impending fate is emblematic of, and raises deep questions about the progressively precarious and capricious conditions of arts practice in Singapore. This editorial highlights four underlying problems that we should be concerned with.

A Class Of N-Player Colonel Blotto Games With Multidimensional Private Information, Christian Ewerhart, Dan Kovenock Feb 2021

A Class Of N-Player Colonel Blotto Games With Multidimensional Private Information, Christian Ewerhart, Dan Kovenock

ESI Working Papers

In this paper, we study N-player Colonel Blotto games with incomplete information about battlefield valuations. Such games arise in job markets, research and development, electoral competition, security analysis, and conflict resolution. For M ≥ N + 1 battlefields, we identify a Bayes-Nash equilibrium in which the resource allocation to a given battlefield is strictly monotone in the valuation of that battlefield. We also explore extensions such as heterogeneous budgets, the case M ≤ N, full-support type distributions, and network games.

Economics Students: Self-Selected In Preferences And Indoctrinated In Beliefs, Antonio M. Espín, Manuel Correa, Alberto Ruiz-Villaverde Feb 2021

Economics Students: Self-Selected In Preferences And Indoctrinated In Beliefs, Antonio M. Espín, Manuel Correa, Alberto Ruiz-Villaverde

ESI Working Papers

There is much debate as to why economics students display more self-interested behavior than other students: whether homo economicus self-select into economics or students are instead “indoctrinated” by economics learning, and whether these effects impact on preferences or beliefs about others’ behavior. Using a classroom survey (n>500) with novel behavioral questions we show that, compared to students in other majors, econ students report being: (i) more self-interested (in particular, less compassionate or averse to advantageous inequality) already in the first year and the difference remains among more senior students; (ii) more likely to think that people will be unwilling …

Institutions And Opportunistic Behavior: Experimental Evidence, Antonio Cabrales, Irma Clots-Figueras, Roberto Hernán-González, Praveen Kujal Feb 2021

Institutions And Opportunistic Behavior: Experimental Evidence, Antonio Cabrales, Irma Clots-Figueras, Roberto Hernán-González, Praveen Kujal

ESI Working Papers

Risk mitigating institutions have long been used by societies to protect against opportunistic behavior. We know little about how they are demanded, who demands them or how they impact subsequent behavior. To study these questions, we run a large-scale online experiment where insurance can be purchased to safeguard against opportunistic behavior. We compare two different selection mechanisms for risk mitigation, the individual and the collective (voting). We find that, whether individual or collective, there is demand for riskmitigating institutions amongst high-opportunism individuals, while low-opportunism individuals demand lesser levels of insurance. However, high-opportunism individuals strategically demand lower insurance institutions when they …

The Co-Creation Of Social Value: What Matters For Public Participation In Corporate Social Responsibility Campaigns, Sun Young Lee, Young Kim, Yeuseung Kim Feb 2021

The Co-Creation Of Social Value: What Matters For Public Participation In Corporate Social Responsibility Campaigns, Sun Young Lee, Young Kim, Yeuseung Kim

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This study explores the impact of organization–public relationships (OPRs) and issue-related situational factors on publics’ intention to participate in CSR campaigns, based on relationship management theory and the situational theory of problem-solving (STOPS). We surveyed 698 respondents living in the United States about two CSR campaigns, one focused on girls’ empowerment and one on deforestation. The results showed that situational motivation and OPRs were strongly and directly related to publics’ participation intention for both CSR campaigns. Only two situational perceptions – constraint recognition and involvement recognition – were indirectly related to publics’ participation. We discuss the theoretical implications of these …
