Bayesian Persuasion With Lie Detection, Florian Ederer, Weicheng Min
Bayesian Persuasion With Lie Detection, Florian Ederer, Weicheng Min
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We consider a model of Bayesian persuasion in which the Receiver can detect lies with positive probability. We show that the Sender lies more when the lie detection probability increases. As long as the lie detection probability is sufficiently small the Sender's and the Receiver's equilibrium payoffs are unaffected by the lie detection technology because the Sender simply compensates by lying more. When the lie detection probability is sufficiently high, the Sender's (Receiver's) equilibrium payoff decreases (increases) with the lie detection probability.

Challenges Faced By Mexican Americans When Accessing Mental Health Care Service Utilization Along The South Texas – Mexico Border, Romeo Escobar, John M. Gonzalez, Denise A. Longoria, Nelda Rodriguez
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the challenges Mexican Americans face when accessing mental health care service utilization along the South Texas-Mexico border. Disparities in access and use of health and mental health services have led Latinos to be disproportionately represented among those most at-risk for chronic health and mental health illnesses and less likely to receive guideline congruent care. Research on mental health service utilization has documented the presence of economic, cultural, and structural barriers that contribute to the underutilization of health services by Latinos. Researchers conducted three focus groups with 25 mental health providers …

Place, Community Ownership And The Role Of Leaseholders Within The Social Dynamics Of Wind Energy Projects In Two Ontario Communities, Parveen Grewal
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
To understand better why wind turbines continue to be polarizing at the local level, experiences of residents in two rural communities in Ontario, Canada were gathered through 31 in-depth semi-structured interviews and analysed with the help of NVivo. The qualitative, inductive study, utilizing a modified grounded theory approach, captured views on community ownership at the community level. Both cases were initiated to be community-owned, allowing for an exploration of why attempts at community ownership failed to materialize at both sites. Close examination of the places – landscapes and people – that constituted community, expanded understandings of how place identities, place …

From Stateless People To Citizens: The Reformulation Of Territory And Identity In India-Bangladesh Border Enclaves, Md Rashedul Alam
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This dissertation analyzes nation-building in hitherto ungoverned territories of two Indian chhitmahals in Bangladesh and explores the transformation of their residents from stateless Indian nationals to citizens of Bangladesh. Chhitmahals comprised nearly two hundred enclaves located along the Bangladesh-India border that belonged to one country but were located inside another’s territory. Chhitmahals came into existence with the partition of India in 1947; their non-contiguous locations kept them without state administration and citizenship rights. People developed political councils and adopted illicit practices to survive in the absence of the state, but the impossibility of exercising sovereignty in chhitmahals led Bangladesh and …

Developing A Fuzzy Expert System To Determine The Levels Of Students' Ehealth Literacy, Rogheyeh Eskrootchi, Masoud Zavari, Mohammadreza Alibeyk
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The concept of eHealth literacy refers to the ability of a person to access electronic health information, evaluate the information, and apply the resulting knowledge to address or solve a health problem. Considering the uncertainties and the subjective nature of e-health literacy, determining the levels of students’ e-health literacy is a complex problem. The aim of this research is to develop and implement a fuzzy expert system to determine the level of eHealth literacy anytime and anywhere without accessing the experts personally. Thus, after studying the different methods of measuring people’s literacy level, the Digital Health Literacy Instrument was chosen …

Positioning Community-Based Girl Group Programs For Success: Lessons Learned From The Population Council's Technical Assistance Partnership With Unfpa-Mozambique's Rapariga Biz, Miriam Temin, Arune Estavela, Craig Heck, Natalie Jackson, Joana Mendes
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The Population Council provided technical assistance and strengthened capacity for Rapariga Biz, a large-scale UN program in 20 districts across Nampula and Zambezia provinces in Mozambique. The program was established to reduce child marriage and early pregnancy through a set of multisectoral interventions. The partnership between the Council and UNFPA-Mozambique generated useful lessons regarding the opportunities and challenges of using the community-based girl groups (CBGG) model in low-resource settings, especially when implemented at scale. In CBGG programs, girls and young women meet regularly with a leader (e.g., a mentor) who uses a variety of pedagogical methods to address sexual and …

The Effect Of The Difference In The Perception Of Temperature Between Sexes On The Academic Performance Of Chapin High School Students, Tiffany V. Phan
Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science
Mental performance and mental functions may be negatively affected by decreases in thermal comfort as a result of large differences in temperature. Additionally, females are seen to be less content with room temperatures and actually prefer rooms with higher temperatures in comparison to males. This investigation explored the potential effect that sex plays in thermal perception and the impact it may yield on academic performance within a high school population. It was hypothesized that female students would experience an increase in academic performance as the temperature increased while males would experience the opposite effect. A quasi-experimental approach was used to …

Critical Questions
For a president to be successful, it is critical they surround themselves with capable administrators with shared goals, who work to support the newly elected leader’s agenda. Building a successful cabinet is among the first priorities of a new president. A president’s cabinet selections can send signals to their various constituencies and can provide a glimpse at how they plan to govern over the next four years. It would appear that Joe Biden’s cabinet nominees largely satisfy his promises to promote diversity and a “return to normalcy” with his presidency.

Transformational Leadership, Conflict Management Style, And Job Satisfaction In Law Enforcement, Giuseppe Alise
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Abstract
Effective leaders are essential for any organization, including law enforcement. Police work is not free from the challenges of leadership, confronted with its own unique challenges, including developing ways to adapt to rapid change and continually having to adjust to various political and environmental factors.
This research is an in-depth examination of how transformational leadership and conflict management style drive job satisfaction in law enforcement. The goal is to determine whether employee satisfaction achieved through transformational leadership is, in fact, largely the result of how leadership handles conflict. The idea is to disentangle the relationship between transformational leadership and …

Long-Run Effects On Employment Rates Of Local Demand Shocks, Across And Within Local Labor Markets, Timothy J. Bartik
Long-Run Effects On Employment Rates Of Local Demand Shocks, Across And Within Local Labor Markets, Timothy J. Bartik
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
This paper estimates the long-run effects on a county’s prime-age employment rate of labor demand shocks to both the county and its overlying commuting zone (CZ). These effects are allowed to vary with local “distress” (baseline employment rate of the county or CZ), and with the size of the demand shock. In more distressed CZs, a county’s employment rate is more affected by county or CZ shocks. As a result, targeting or reallocating jobs to more distressed CZs will tend to raise employment rates. If a county is relatively distressed compared to its CZ, targeting job shocks at that county …

Examining The 2021 Inauguration, Onu Institute For Civics And Public Policy
Critical Questions
The peaceful transition of power in the United States is marked by the inauguration of a president every four years. This has been the case since the first president of the United States, George Washington. Though the date, location, and time have changed since then, the oath of office has remained the same. This past Wednesday America witnessed the inauguration of our 46th president, Joe Biden. However, the absence of his predecessor, the storming of the United States Capitol on January 6th, and the COVID pandemic made it an inauguration like no other.

Counter-Hegemonic Self-Representation Of Arabs And Muslims In Ramy: A Critical Pedagogical Analysis, Maya Chmaissany
Major Papers
Historically, representations of Arabs and Muslims in mainstream media have been heavily based on stereotypes, orientalist thought, and have not come from Arabs and Muslims at the source. They have resulted in an overly negative and damaging repertoire of depictions throughout various forms of media, including print, film, video games and television. These representations can have damaging consequences for Arabs and Muslims, as well as contributing to the structuring of opinions and views of general audiences.
The primary concern of this research paper is to analyze how self-representation by Arabs and Muslims in mainstream media can impact dominant hegemonic structures. …

Polysemantics And Filter In Semantic Tagging System, Dildora Bahodirovna Akhmedova
Scientific reports of Bukhara State University
Background. Semantic markup is an issue that has been thoroughly studied by experts. If the first generation of language corpora was a collection of electronic texts, then a tool with a query-responsive interface was later formed into literal corporations with linguistic and extralinguistic markings. Linguistically marked corpuses were initially only morphological, then morpho-syntactic, and in recent years the perfect form of linguistic marking - the corpus with morphological, syntactic and semantic markings - has undergone a stage of development. The introduction of semantic markup into the case was initially based on theory, while semantic marking problems were explored. Yu.D. Apresyan, …

Background. Relevance is due to a certain level of undevelopment of many issues related to the human factor in the language. The development of this problematic seems promising for identifying the national and cultural characteristics of English and Uzbek phraseological units, which allows us to increase our vocabulary and, therefore, enrich our speech. This article examines the semantic-pragmatic and connotatively evaluative relations of phraseological units based on animal images in English and Uzbek languages. Zoonyms imply textual roles within a specific discourse and difference in values, stereotypes and behaviour patterns in national cultures. Methods. Studying nominations of a human with a …

National-Specific And Universal Means Of Expressing The Concepts "Winter" And "Summer” In The Russian And Uzbek Language Pictures Of The World, Otabek Timurovich Nosirov
Scientific reports of Bukhara State University
Background. In this article, Russian will be the source language, and Uzbek will be the language of comparison. Because, despite the structural differences between the Russian and Uzbek languages, our countries have a historical experience of social, cultural, and of course, linguistic interaction. Methods. Given that the language projections of the collective unconscious, in this case the conceptual opposition "winter-summer", do not have blood and racial inheritance, but belong to humanity as a whole, we can conclude that the deep or basic cognitive layers of the concepts of winter and summer in both the Russian and Uzbek languages contain a …
