California Elected City Council Women Of Color: Building A Collaborative Vision With Inclusive Voice, Beatriz T. Valencia
California Elected City Council Women Of Color: Building A Collaborative Vision With Inclusive Voice, Beatriz T. Valencia
Education (PhD) Dissertations
Following the U.S. presidential race of 2016, large numbers of women—particularly women of color—made the decision to run for political office for the first time at both the national and local levels. It is imperative that these women’s campaigns and victories are studied as a means to resist essentialism and honor the unique perspectives and histories of the voices of women of color in these political roles—roles highly underrepresented in literature and society at large. This dissertation focused on the victory speeches of 48, first-time, California city council, elected women of color (EWOC) with the aim of understanding their campaigns …
Distractors As A Tool To Increase “Self-Control” In Pigeons (Columba Livia), Peyton Mueller
Distractors As A Tool To Increase “Self-Control” In Pigeons (Columba Livia), Peyton Mueller
Theses and Dissertations--Psychology
In the successive delay-discounting task, all trials start with a stimulus to which a response results in a small amount of reinforcement (smaller-sooner). If no response is made, the stimulus changes and a response results in a larger reinforcer (larger-later). The purpose of this study was to examine the use of a non-reinforced distractor (a stimulus to which responding has no programmed consequence) as a method of increasing the proportion of larger-later (LL) choices in a successive delay-discounting task. Earlier research studying the use of distractors may have inadvertently associated the distractor with reinforcement. Four experiments were conducted and each …

Don't Change The Subject: How State Election Laws Can Nullify Ballot Questions, Cole Gordner
Don't Change The Subject: How State Election Laws Can Nullify Ballot Questions, Cole Gordner
Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)
Procedural election laws regulate the conduct of state elections and provide for greater transparency and fairness in statewide ballots. These laws ensure that the public votes separately on incongruous bills and protects the electorate from uncertainties contained in omnibus packages. As demonstrated by a slew of recent court cases, however, interest groups that are opposed to the objective of a ballot question are utilizing these election laws with greater frequency either to prevent a state electorate from voting on an initiative or to overturn a ballot question that was already decided in the initiative’s favor. This practice is subverting the …
Three Essays On Grocery Sales Taxes, Lingxiao Wang
Three Essays On Grocery Sales Taxes, Lingxiao Wang
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
Grocery sales taxes represent a stable tax revenue stream for state and municipal government, but there is rare empirical evidence suggesting grocery taxes may adversely affect health. In addition, the how governments set grocery sales taxes is still unclear. Therefore, based on a novel national dataset of annual county and state-level grocery taxes from 2009 through 2016, the following three essays in the dissertation investigate the health impacts of grocery sales taxes and the causes of grocery sales taxes in a framework of tax competition.
In the first essay, we document the spatial and temporal variation in grocery taxes and …
Spiritual Leadership In Early Intervention Practice, Jo Lynn Mccray
Spiritual Leadership In Early Intervention Practice, Jo Lynn Mccray
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this narrative inquiry was to explore ways to integrate the principles of spiritual leadership theory into therapeutic practice and to understand how spiritual leadership is used in therapy sessions from therapists’ own perspectives. Semi-structured interviews served as the major sources of data. The findings of the study reveal that early intervention therapists incorporated the elements of spiritual leadership, such as hope and faith, to enhance services provided to children and families.
Left To Their Own Devices: Parents’ Mediation Of Children’S Technology, Rike Neubert
Left To Their Own Devices: Parents’ Mediation Of Children’S Technology, Rike Neubert
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The current study examined the link between digital device use and learning among 3rd through 8th graders. Specifically, it examined whether parenting strategies aimed at enabling or restricting device use can mediate the link between children’s time on device and learning outcomes. Moreover, this study examined whether certain vulnerability factors within a child’s ecological system, such as ADHD Symptoms, parents’ own digital literacy, and parents’ relationship with the school, might weaken or strengthen the success of parental mediation strategies in the association between time on devices and learning. Findings aimed to inform growing equity questions around varying levels of digital …

Perimeters And Pods: Crisis, Collective Action, And Small Towns, Ruth F. Kohl
Senior Projects Spring 2021
This project examines the communities of small towns and the ways that these social dynamics between friends, neighbors, and coworkers shift in times of conflict. Through the explorations of a historic labor strike in a small town quarry, a prohibitionist raid on that same town's supply of alcohol, and the social relationships between Bard students in Tivoli amidst COVID, this project investigates how these connections between people operate.
Luzverde/Greenlight: A History Of Advocacy For Access To Driver’S Licenses For Undocumented New Yorkers, Diego A. Callenbach
Luzverde/Greenlight: A History Of Advocacy For Access To Driver’S Licenses For Undocumented New Yorkers, Diego A. Callenbach
Senior Projects Spring 2021
This project addresses the history of advocacy for driver's license access for undocumented New Yorkers from 2017-2021. This project explores a biography of two central advocates of the campaign and their rhetoric of participation in grassroots social movements. This project dissects the various tactics used in the organization of a policy-oriented campaign known as Greenlight. Greenlight is the colloquial name for the bill passed in legislation in 2019. Greenlight (Drivers Access and Privacy Act) allowed residents that do not have social security numbers to be eligible to obtain driver's licenses. This project used in-person and virtual ethnography as a means …
Online Education And The Socioeconomic Achievement Gap: A Solution Or A Problem?, Narain Darakananda
Online Education And The Socioeconomic Achievement Gap: A Solution Or A Problem?, Narain Darakananda
Senior Projects Spring 2021
The socioeconomic achievement gap refers to how students of lower socioeconomic status (SES) underperform academically relative to their higher SES peers. In addressing this issue, researchers have considered online learning as a potential solution. Because online learning platforms provide increased flexibility and access for students, some argue that online education will democratize education and narrow the socioeconomic achievement gap. As such, in recent decades, online learning has increasingly been used as an addition to and, in some cases, even a replacement for in-person learning. A closer examination of the subject, however, reveals that the widespread adoption of online learning may …
"Useful Wooden Toys": Skateboarding As A Tool For Nyc Youth Advocacy, Simon Len Nichoson
"Useful Wooden Toys": Skateboarding As A Tool For Nyc Youth Advocacy, Simon Len Nichoson
Senior Projects Fall 2021
My senior thesis explores the role of skateboarding in youth development, and its further implications within the realm of youth advocacy and activism. A large part of my project involves ethnographic fieldwork in which I participate in a skate clinic for the Harold Hunter Foundation (HHF), a non-profit organization that primarily serves at-risk youth in New York City through skateboarding-related programming. Founded in memory of professional skateboarder Harold Hunter, the foundation also seeks to provide support and advocacy for the skateboarding community. While practicing self-reflexivity, I draw from the field of halfie anthropology, given that I am an avid skateboarder …
The Structures That Bind: An Examination Of Housing And Wealth Inequality In America And A Proposal For An Effective Economic Solution, Baylor Brown
Senior Projects Fall 2021
Given America’s violently racist history, it should not come as a surprise that housing inequality still runs rampant in 21st century American cities. What may come as more of a surprise, however, is the true complexity of housing inequality and its broader implications. Housing inequality is not an independent phenomena and there are a multitude of structures which enable housing discrimination to interact with and perpetuate other forms of discrimination. Economically speaking, a public banking option in the U.S would serve as an effective tool to regulate household finance and chip away at the foundations of inequality. While there are …
Characterizing Experience And Regulation Of Sexual Harassment Experiences Among Female Gamers In First-Person Shooters, Emma Dmitrievna Kisselev
Characterizing Experience And Regulation Of Sexual Harassment Experiences Among Female Gamers In First-Person Shooters, Emma Dmitrievna Kisselev
Senior Projects Fall 2021
Female gamers frequently experience harassment from other players while playing online first person shooters and are frequently alienated from the online gaming community. Sexism within the video game community also manifests through the underrepresentation and sexualization of female characters, both of which have been shown to increase sexist attitudes (Bushman and Laroi, 2019, Dill et al 2008). The present study examined harassment towards women while playing online video games, as well as effects of harassment on mental health and gender masking behaviors. Additionally, the present study examined how the gender ratio of characters within a game affects harassment towards female …
The Great Recession Vs The Covid-19 Pandemic: Unemployment And Implications For Public Policy, Giuliana Scanni Ms
The Great Recession Vs The Covid-19 Pandemic: Unemployment And Implications For Public Policy, Giuliana Scanni Ms
Theses - Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy
The Great Recession lasted from December 2007 until June 2009 and was one of the most severe recessions since the post-war period. It took about two years from the time of the unraveling of the U.S. housing market and mortgages, until the collapse of Lehman Brothers—as the crisis spread to the rest of the financial sector of the economy.
The Covid-19 Pandemic erupted from a public health crisis at the end of January 2020 and unlike the Great Recession, employment collapsed sharply in a matter of weeks, leaving millions without work by April 2020. The Covid-19 Pandemic has demonstrated an …

Addressing The Homelessness Crisis In The United States Of America, Lukas Klatke Ms
Theses - Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy
Data from the American Housing Survey for 2015, 2017, and 2019 show median incomes and median rent cost as a proportion of median income for Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, and Non – Hispanics at the state and metro level. The data demonstrates Blacks have lower median incomes than Whites, and Hispanics have lower median incomes than Non - Hispanics.
Additionally, the data indicates the median rent cost as a proportion of median income values for Blacks is larger than the values for Whites. The values for Hispanics are larger than the values for Non - Hispanics. These results imply Blacks and …
Measuring The Well-Being Of Economies Beyond Gross Domestic Product, Thien Jason Nguyen Ma
Measuring The Well-Being Of Economies Beyond Gross Domestic Product, Thien Jason Nguyen Ma
Theses - Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy
The most widely used measurement of economies around the world is the gross domestic product (GDP). There has been much study and reasoning that has gone into the conceptual and statistical bases of this indicator and there are even international standards for how it should be calculated. The monetary valuation of goods and services has fabricated a relatively manageable way for us to sum up quantities of different nature and for calculating the economic progress of a nation. The GDP indicator is seen as being another way for measuring money in order to present economic performances and living standards, giving …
The Costs And Benefits Of Renewable Portfolio Standards In The United States: Accounting For Policy Heterogeneity And Endogeneity, Ian Bowen Ms
Theses - Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy
Renewable portfolio standards (RPS) have emerged as some of the main state-level policy tools addressing climate change. The central aim of this thesis is to investigate the costs and benefits of these policies in terms of their impacts on the share of non-hydro renewables and electricity prices, respectively. To accurately estimate these impacts, this paper argues that it is necessary to account for policy heterogeneity (i.e., differences in policy features across states) and endogeneity (i.e., the correlation between policy features and unobservable factors that affect the dependent variables). In the literature, there has been work addressing the former, and there …

Transitioning From The Libor, Sid Subramani Ms
Theses - Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy
The focus of this thesis will be on the policy implications surrounding the mandated transition from the London Interbank Offered Rate to Secured Overnight Financing Rate. This discussion will begin by explaining the genesis of the LIBOR in the development of the Eurodollar market. Next, this paper will present the LIBOR manipulation scandal and the effects on the financial system. An analysis of the differences between SOFR and LIBOR will provide the basis of an assessment of the impact of the change on financial institutions. Finally, the effectiveness of the SOFR as a benchmark will be evaluated, along with the …
High-Contrast, Moving Targets In An Emerging Target Paradigm Promote Fast Visuomotor Responses During Visually Guided Reaching, Rebecca A. Kozak, Brian D. Corneil
High-Contrast, Moving Targets In An Emerging Target Paradigm Promote Fast Visuomotor Responses During Visually Guided Reaching, Rebecca A. Kozak, Brian D. Corneil
Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications
Humans have a remarkable capacity to rapidly interact with the surrounding environment, often by transforming visual input into motor output on a moment-to-moment basis. But what visual features promote rapid reaching? High-contrast, fast-moving targets elicit strong responses in the superior colliculus (SC), a structure associated with express saccades and implicated in rapid electromyographic (EMG) responses on upper limb muscles. To test the influence of stimulus properties on rapid reaches, we had human subjects perform visually guided reaches to moving targets varied by speed (experiment 1) or speed and contrast (experiment 2) in an emerging target paradigm that has recently been …
The Importance Of Social Connectedness: From Interpersonal Schemas In Depression To Relationship Functioning And Well-Being, David J. A. Dozois
The Importance Of Social Connectedness: From Interpersonal Schemas In Depression To Relationship Functioning And Well-Being, David J. A. Dozois
Psychology Publications
In this article, a program of research is described, which began with a focus on depression. A number of studies have demonstrated that negative self-schemas, particularly for interpersonal content, are well organized and appear to represent stable vulnerability factors for depression. Fortunately, this negative interpersonal structure is also modifiable through effective treatments (both psychological and pharmacological). An important extension of this research has involved investigating the impact of schemas on interpersonal phenomena (e.g., excessive reassurance seeking) and the formation of schemas about others (e.g., romantic partners). The dyadic partner-schema model, which articulates how self- and partner-schemas impact relationship functioning, is …
The Rainbow Nation Vision: (Re)Constructing & (Re)Imagining South Africanness, Riley Crouthamel
The Rainbow Nation Vision: (Re)Constructing & (Re)Imagining South Africanness, Riley Crouthamel
Capstone Showcase
“Rainbowism” or the new form of nationalism inspired by Mandela’s “Rainbow Nation vision” emphasizes unity, equality, and non-racialism, and has become the dominant myth and metaphor by which South Africa is recognized in the post-apartheid era. Through an application of a theoretical framework that emphasizes the mythological and imaginative aspects of constructive nationalism and an analysis of Rainbowism’s rise to mythical dominance and evolution in the South African imaginary over the span of the past three decades of democracy using ANC “Rainbowist” discourses in both explicit and inexplicit ways, this thesis argues that Rainbowism arose as a counter myth in …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Introduction: Despite higher incidence of brain injury among Aboriginal compared with non-Aboriginal Australians, suboptimal engagement exists between rehabilitation services and Aboriginal brain injury survivors. Aboriginal patients often feel culturally insecure in hospital and navigation of services post discharge is complex. Health professionals report feeling ill-equipped working with Aboriginal patients. This study will test the impact of a research-informed culturally secure intervention model for Aboriginal people with brain injury.
Methods and Analysis: Design: Stepped wedge cluster randomised control trial design; intervention sequentially introduced at four pairs of healthcare sites across Western Australia at 26-week intervals.
Recruitment: Aboriginal participants aged ≥18 years …
The Fringe Or The Heart Of Things? Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Musics In Australian Music Institutions, Clint Bracknell, Linda Barwick
The Fringe Or The Heart Of Things? Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Musics In Australian Music Institutions, Clint Bracknell, Linda Barwick
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Teetering on the fringe of Australian music scholarship and knowledge institutions, research and teaching of local Indigenous musics hold a marginal place, belying the positioning of Indigenous music-makers at the centre of international representations of Australian culture, and the dynamic local connections of Indigenous music-making to Australian landscapes and social realities. Music’s ubiquity and diversity worldwide show its potential as a tool to manage the changing world in societies of the past and present, yet this potential is largely neglected in contemporary Australia, and our theories and evidence base are limited by the narrow western focus within our knowledge institutions. …

Data were conveniently collected during the implementation of a novel monitoring concept. The concept was designed to enable safe continuation of professional Football during the COVID-19 pandemic. These data were matched with Austrian COVID-19 data and smartphone collected location data. Multivariable linear regression models explored the association of COVID-19, defined as daily novel or active Austrian cases of …
Trade Liberalization And Economic Performance: An Empirical Analysis, Brandon Fontaine
Trade Liberalization And Economic Performance: An Empirical Analysis, Brandon Fontaine
Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal
Trade liberalization has long been a debated topic; free traders will argue it makes all involved parties more prosperous while protectionists say that it costs jobs and hurts countries’ economies. This paper will study the relationship between a country’s trade freedom, as measured by the Heritage Foundations trade openness metrics, and the nation’s economic performance. This study will incorporate indicators such as gross domestic product, unemployment, and investment flows across 56 countries of different income levels to determine whether free trade policies lead to greater economic performance. The three income levels analyzed will be high-income, medium-income, and low-income. The empirical …
