Meritocracy-Based Stickiness Measure Of Social Mobility, Curtis G. Tenney Jan 2021

Meritocracy-Based Stickiness Measure Of Social Mobility, Curtis G. Tenney

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

I measure the stickiness of social mobility in terms of meritocratic assumptions through the first-known Meritocracy-Based Stickiness Measure of Mobility (MBSMoM) using mobility transition matrices and assumptions based on Full Meritocracy (FM) and Lack of Meritocracy (LM). I develop the Simple Stickiness Measure of Mobility (SSMoM) and the Weighted Stickiness Measure of Mobility (WSMoM). In addition, I create the MBSMoM which is calculated from mobility transition matrices of intragenerational, intergenerational, and multigenerational correlations using various measures of status including education, occupation, class, consumption, income, and wealth. Utilizing mobility transition matrices employed by plethora of studies, MBSMoMs are calculated as a …

Role Overload: Examining The Definition And Measurement Of A Common Work Stressor, Sean Becker Jan 2021

Role Overload: Examining The Definition And Measurement Of A Common Work Stressor, Sean Becker

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Researchers previously gave considerable attention to role overload as a predictor of employee health, job attitudes, and behavior. However, the validity and conceptualization of role overload measures have been questioned and show inconsistent results. In response to the issues with role overload measures, the researcher developed a new measure of total role overload, consisting of two work related dimensions, qualitative and quantitative. These dimensions were crossed with “data people and things” to provide diagnostic ability and one non-work-related dimension of family role overload to contextualize the individual’s life. The researcher conducted three studies to examine the psychometric qualities of the …

Teaching Peace By Using Nonviolent Communication For Difficult Conversations In The College Classroom, Sara Koopman, Laine Seliga Jan 2021

Teaching Peace By Using Nonviolent Communication For Difficult Conversations In The College Classroom, Sara Koopman, Laine Seliga

Peace and Conflict Studies

Having empathy and respect for oneself and others when engaging in difficult dialogue is an essential part of peace education. Gandhi emphasized that involving emotions was more transformative than purely intellectual approaches to education. Nonviolent communication (NVC), as developed by Marshall Rosenberg, is a tool for fostering empathy and building connection across difference. Using NVC for difficult conversations in any college classroom is a way of mainstreaming peace education across the curriculum. Though there is literature on difficult conversations in the college classroom, and on the effectiveness of NVC in general and in K-12 classrooms, there is very little on …

America’S Presidential Crisis Of Legitimacy: How The Electoral College Became Obsolete And How We Can Fix It, Julia Rose Foodman

Scripps Senior Theses

The goal of this thesis is to critique the current American Presidential electoral system, the Electoral College, and to show what an alternative could potentially mean for the American people. This paper seeks to answer the following questions: What are the main arguments for the Electoral College, why are they troubling, and how can we mend American Presidential elections for the greater purposes of political equality, democracy, and freedom? To do so, core arguments made by conservative pundits in favor of the Electoral College are outlined in order to bring attention to their logical, political, and moral inconsistencies. The inequalities …

Needs Of Foster Parents, Emma Friemel, Amanda Terrell, Jennifer Becnel, Michael Merten

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Children in foster care are likely to have experienced some form of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). These ACEs can leave them vulnerable when faced with difficult future situations. There are several studies that examine the resiliency of children in foster care, but few examine foster children’s resiliency from the perspective of the child’s foster parents. The Oklahoma State University Center for Family Resilience administered a survey to 316 prospective, current, and former foster parents regarding their experiences with the foster care system. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to determine themes based on Masten’s resiliency theory. Themes were coded …

Exploring The Impact Of Leadership Values And Practices To Support Equity And Social Justice In An Urban School, Susan-Marie Farmen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative case study explores the leadership values and practices of a principal in a sixth through twelfth-grade school in the Rocky Mountain West to determine how leadership values and practices support the implementation of equitable and socially just practices in the school. Five key themes emerged: (a) equity as a Black/non-Black construct; (b) a lack of knowledge and awareness of the historical contexts of marginalized populations; (c) moral courage for all members of the school; (d) equity as an initiative or program; (e) resistance to deep equity work. From these themes, I devise three recommendations to support substantial and …

The Availability Of Training Opportunities In Personality Disorders In American Psychological Association- And Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System-Accredited Clinical And Counseling Psychology Doctoral Programs, K. N. Levy, William D. Ellison

Psychology Faculty Research

Personality disorders are relatively common, especially in clinical settings. A number of evidence-based treatments are now available, especially for borderline personality disorder. However, little is known about the relevant training available to doctoral students in clinical and counseling psychology. in the current study, data were extracted from 336 clinical and counseling Ph.D. and Psy.D. programs from the Insider’s Guide to Graduate Programs in Clinical and Counseling Psychology (Norcross & Sayette, 2020), including the number of programs with faculty with specific interests in personality disorders and the number of programs with clinical opportunities related to personality disorders. We found that formal …

Psychometric Properties Of The Contextual Body Image Questionnaire For Athletes: A Replication And Extension Study In Female Collegiate Athletes, Tiffany Stewart, Lisa S. Kilpela, Nicole Wesley, K. Baule, Carolyn Becker

Psychology Faculty Research

Background

Although the link between body dissatisfaction and eating disorder (ED) pathology is well-established in general female samples, less is known about contextual body image (CBI) among female athletes. CBI refers to female athletes’ body image concerns in two contexts: sport and daily life. The Contextual Body Image Questionnaire for Athletes (CBIQA) measures four dimensions of body image (Appearance, Thin-Fat Self-Evaluation, Thin-Fat Others’ Evaluation, and Muscularity) in both contexts. In a sample of female collegiate athletes, this study sought to A) investigate the psychometric properties of the CBIQA, B) examine the cross-sectional relation of CBI with ED pathology and negative …

Binge Eating Among Older Women: Prevalence Rates And Health Correlates Across Three Independent Samples, Salomé A. Wilfred, Carolyn Black Becker, K. E. Kanzler, N. Musi, S. E. Espinoza, Lisa S. Kilpela

Psychology Faculty Research

Background: Emerging research indicates that binge eating (BE; consuming unusually large amounts of food in one siting while feeling a loss of control) is prevalent among older women. Yet, health correlates of BE in older adult populations are poorly understood. The original study aimed to investigate BE prevalence, frequency, and health correlates in a sample of older adult women. Based on results from this first study, we then sought to replicate findings in two additional samples of older adult women from separate studies.

Method: Using self-reported frequencies of BE from three separate samples of older women with very different demographics, …

The Effect Of Partner Gender On Bisexual’S Percieved Lgbt+ Belonging, Danielle Siegel Jan 2021

The Effect Of Partner Gender On Bisexual’S Percieved Lgbt+ Belonging, Danielle Siegel

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Bisexual erasure is a phenomenon in which the existence of bisexuality is broadly omitted from history, media, and research. Bisexual erasure contributes to stereotypes that bisexuality is a strictly transitional identity, only used in the process of sexually-experimenting or coming out as gay. Although well-documented in qualitative research on bisexuality, the negative effects of bisexual erasure on bisexual women’s mental health and ability to access LGBT+ resources have not been shown in an experimental context. In a vignette study, participants (N= 276) were asked to review application materials for a potential recipient of an LGBT+ exclusive scholarship award. …

Family Communicative Environment’S Effects On Young Adults’ Social Norms About Limiting Alcohol: Examining The Mediating Effects Of Implicit Pri, Grace Ellen Brannon Jan 2021

Family Communicative Environment’S Effects On Young Adults’ Social Norms About Limiting Alcohol: Examining The Mediating Effects Of Implicit Pri, Grace Ellen Brannon

Communication Faculty Publications

Alcohol usage among young adults remains a prominent public health concern. Communicating with family members about alcohol can positively influence young adults’ perceptions of social norms, yet the stigmatized nature of alcohol-related conversations in the family create a barrier to occurrence of these conversations. This study examines how young adults’ familial communication patterns impact their descriptive and injunctive social norms about alcohol, using Communication Privacy Management Theory as the theoretical framework. Specifically, this study seeks to understand how conversation orientation, conformity orientation, warm conformity orientation, and cold conformity orientation predicts two sets of social norms (descriptive and injunctive), and to …

Relapse Prevention Planning With Clients, Grace E. Larsen Jan 2021

Relapse Prevention Planning With Clients, Grace E. Larsen

Counselor Education Capstones

Addiction is a common disease; about 21 million Americans have at least one addiction (Addiction Statistics, 2021). However, only about ten percent of Americans with an addiction receive treatment. Treatment comes in many forms including medication, therapy, coping skills, support systems, and other interventions. This paper emphasizes the importance of relapse prevention and the benefits it can provide in addition to treatment. Relapse prevention is based on a cognitive-behavioral approach to therapy and while it is considered to be a form of tertiary prevention, this paper argues that relapse prevention should be seen as a method of primary prevention. Several …

Alone On The Range? Rangeland Stakeholder Perceptions Of Public Lands, Community Change And Maintaining Rural Livelihoods, Hailee Rose Nolte

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Ranchers are a part of a rapidly changing rural western American landscape, and they play a special role in protecting and stewarding working landscapes. Rural communities in Eastern Oregon and Northeastern California have deeply rooted identities and economies connected to ranching and a high percentage of federal lands. The aim of this research is to: 1) document how ties to ranching are changing in communities undergoing social and economic change; 2) analyze the relationships and interactions between ranchers and federal management agency representatives; and 3) to identify how ranchers are maintaining their lifestyle under these circumstances. I interviewed representatives of …

The Intersection Of Empathy, Social Identity, And Threat, Samantha E. Gardner Jan 2021

The Intersection Of Empathy, Social Identity, And Threat, Samantha E. Gardner

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Empathy is a tool we can use to feel and understand other’s emotions and circumstances. The social identity perspective posits that we are motivated to protect and promote the groups we belong to, and that we feel emotions on behalf of the group. Further, intergroup threat theory (found within the social identity framework) postulates that perceived threat to one’s group leads to intergroup tension, breeding prejudiced attitudes and discriminatory behavior. To investigate the relationship that identity and threat have on participant’s empathy for outgroups, I measured: how much participants identified with the White American identity; their White privilege awareness; their …

Autobiographical Meaning Making Protects The Sense Of Self-Continuity Past Forced Migration, Christin Camia, Rida Zafar Jan 2021

Autobiographical Meaning Making Protects The Sense Of Self-Continuity Past Forced Migration, Christin Camia, Rida Zafar

All Works

Forced migration changes people’s lives and their sense of self-continuity fundamentally. One memory-based mechanism to protect the sense of self-continuity and psychological well-being is autobiographical meaning making, enabling individuals to explain change in personality and life by connecting personal experiences and other distant parts of life to the self and its development. Aiming to replicate and extend prior research, the current study investigated whether autobiographical meaning making has the potential to support the sense of self-continuity in refugees. We therefore collected life narratives from 31 refugees that were coded for autobiographical reasoning, selfevent connections, and global narrative coherence. In line …

Manipulating Interword And Interletter Spacing In Cursive Script: An Eye Movements Investigation Of Reading Persian, Ehab W. Hermena Jan 2021

Manipulating Interword And Interletter Spacing In Cursive Script: An Eye Movements Investigation Of Reading Persian, Ehab W. Hermena

All Works

Persian is an Indo-Iranian language that features a derivation of Arabic cursive script, where most letters within words are connectable to adjacent letters with ligatures. Two experiments are reported where the properties of Persian script were utilized to investigate the effects of reducing interword spacing and increasing the interletter distance (ligature) within a word. Experiment 1 revealed that decreasing interword spacing while extending interletter ligature by the same amount was detrimental to reading speed. Experiment 2 largely replicated these findings. The experiments show that providing the readers with inaccurate word boundary information is detrimental to reading rate. This was achieved …
