State of the Commonwealth Reports

To say that most Virginians would prefer to forget 2020 might be an understatement. The COVID-19 pandemic threw tens of thousands of Virginians out of work, shuttered businesses and abruptly transitioned much of education into the world of remote learning. As 2021 draws to a close, the story has changed from one of shock to one of recovery. In this chapter, we examine the impact of the pandemic, the ongoing recovery and prospects for continued growth in 2022.

“Developing countries have few resources for ground-based hydrological investigations to determine optimal placement of boreholes for community water access. Remote sensing data are available at a variety of resolutions and sense different parameters, and are useful inputs for hydrologic models, but these data are rarely obtainable in developing countries with the parameters or resolutions necessary for hydrologic applications. This research seeks to use and improve existing remote sensing and GIS techniques to identify areas of optimal water supply in locations with limited geologic or hydrologic information, such as Gulu District, Uganda. This chapter describes the design and implementation of a formal research mentoring program within a continuing education program for academic librarians. The chapter explores ways in which this type of mentoring might be applied in a single-institution or a cross-institutional mentoring program. Formal one-on-one research-mentoring is one component of the Institute for Research Design in Librarianship (IRDL, https://library.lmu.edu/irdl), a research development program for novice researchers who are academic librarians from all disciplines. Concomitant with an increase in the global illegal wildlife trade has been a substantial increase in research within traditional conservation-based sciences and conservation and green criminology. Despite the sharp drop in transit ridership throughout the USA that began in March 2020, two different uses of land near transit stations continue to be implemented in the United States to promote ridership. Since 2010, transit agencies have given priority to multi-family residential construction referred to as transit oriented development (TOD), with an emphasis on housing affordability. In second place for urban planners but popular with suburban commuters is free or inexpensive parking near rail or bus transit centers, known as park-and-ride (PnR). © 2020 Legislative and market initiatives are requiring that gestating sows move from individual housing to group settings. Little information is known about coping of individual sows in these more socially complex environments and thus the impact of different behaviors on sow reproductive success was investigated. The movements of 70 sows during periods of reintroduction into large pen gestational housing following insemination was measured using Smartbow indoor positioning technology (Smartbow, Smartbow GmbH, Weibern, Austria) that tracked animal location and accelerations. Stance and engagement are important rhetorical resources for writers to construct interaction with readers and ideas by marking epistemic evaluation and bringing readers into the texts. Building on previous research that suggests notable differences in the use of stance and engagement in academic discourse, this comparative study investigates the use of stance and engagement in scientific research articles. By comparing two corpora that contain 144 research articles in total across 16 scientific disciplines, this study examines if the numbers of stance and engagement differ between manuscripts (unpublished research papers) that are produced by nonnative writers and those that are published …

Emotion regulation (ER), the regulatory component of temperament, has important implications for emotional, behavioral, and physical health throughout the lifespan. Researchers have examined various factors, such as maternal ER functioning and parenting behaviors, that influence the development of ER abilities in early childhood. Greater maternal ER functioning, including the use of cognitive reappraisal, is linked to better child ER. Additionally, positive parenting, characterized by warm, responsive, sensitive, and supportive interactions, has been found to predict better child ER functioning. Negative parenting (i.e., harsh, intrusive, and insensitive interactions) predicts poor child ER. Maternal ER has also been found to predict parenting, …

Social anxiety severely limits an individual’s ability to develop and maintain relationships and often stifles an individual’s ambition and growth in both occupational and academic settings. Post-event processing occurs when an individual engages in a detailed, repetitive, and negative review of a previous social interaction and often results in feelings of guilt, shame, and embarrassment for how the individual appeared to others in the social interaction. Shyness mindset is the degree to which an individual believes their own shyness is capable of change. A fixed shyness mindset is the belief that shyness is unmalleable and cannot be changed. Incivility can be selectively targeted at employees with minority group memberships, undermining attempts to mitigate diversity initiatives. Thus, selective incivility can target older workers and lead to negative repercussions for the employee. In this dissertation, I theoretically discern between selective incivility toward older workers and age discrimination. This study explored the experience of daily selective incivility for older workers. The study found evidence that the relationship between age and incivility was not linear, suggesting that both older and younger workers experience incivility more often than middle-aged workers. Further, there is evidence that incivility is associated with the affective reactions of …

The Influence Of Defendants' Nonverbal Behaviors On Juror Liking, Sympathy, And Sentencing, Joseph Thomas

Jurors are highly susceptible to influence, especially in the form of emotional manipulation. Totest this, the present study applies Burgoon’s (1993) expectancy violation theory to affective defendant behaviors (i.e., remorse, immediacy). In an attempt to manipulate the perceived rewardingness of the defendant, these behaviors are coupled with a description of either a major or minor crime. The results indicate that remorse behaviors evoke sympathy, thereby leading to a more lenient sentencing recommendation by mock jurors. Though the likeability of the defendant also impacted juror sentencing recommendations, immediacy behaviors failed to produce such an effect. Implications of these results are discussed.

A large and growing number of college students use stimulants such as Adderall, Vyvanse, or Ritalin through their college careers, despite not having a prescription themselves. Using in-depth interviews, the current study provides an understanding of undergraduate student’s career stimulant use. Specifically, this research provides the stages necessary for becoming a stimulant user. These stages are: having a predisposition to trying stimulants, learning about stimulants, watching people use them without experiencing negative consequences, experiencing various personal struggles, convincing themselves that using stimulants is their best or only option to overcome these struggles, and lastly, upon trying stimulants, learning to enjoy …
