The Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experiences, Ingrid Weiss Slikkers, Erick Pena

Faculty Publications

It was in the late 1990’s that the original Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs- https:// www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/aces/index.html) study through CDC-Kaiser Permanente was done. This groundbreaking research opened the door to the reality that childhood and household challenges, including but not limited to abuse, neglect and even divorce, can dramatically impact a person’s health and well-being throughout life. Much work has been done since 1997 to further study and subsequently reduce ACEs’ impact, but the sad truth is that although much effort has been put forth to combat adverse experiences, ACEs are still very prevalent today and even our own congregations are touched. …

Highly Cited Publications Index (Hcp) For Individual Evaluation: Applications In Brazilian Information Metric Studies, João Melo Maricato, Priscila Rodrigues Dos Santos Jan 2021

Highly Cited Publications Index (Hcp) For Individual Evaluation: Applications In Brazilian Information Metric Studies, João Melo Maricato, Priscila Rodrigues Dos Santos

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The use of different bibliometric indicators to analyze the individual scientific production of researchers constantly raises questions among several authors. Based on this problem, Waltman, Van Eck and Wouters (2013) propose a methodology that values highly cited papers (high impact) over low cited papers (low impact). To this end, the authors developed a stylized Highly Cited Publications (HCP) index aiming to minimize some limitations inherent to the metrics used to evaluate scientists. The present work proposes to carry out the empirical application of the HCP index stylized by the authors to researchers in the field of Information Metrics Studies (IMS) …

"Well, You Could Be A Murderer..." And Other Reasons Why I Should Stop Using Dating Apps: A Personal Narrative About Dating In The Age Of Technology, Gabriella Granillo

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Dating isn’t easy. I’m sure we’ve all had that thought before. How are we even supposed to meet people nowadays? In the grocery store? At the mall? In a library? No! Why not utilize the one thing that we, as humans in the 21st century, can’t seem to live without, our cellphones! We have just about everything else at our fingertips, why not have the next best thing, a relationship, a hookup, or just a friend with just a swipe and a touch of the phalanges?I have been using dating apps off and on for about six years, and I …

Personality Pathology In Winter Depression: Prevalence And Treatment Trajectories In Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy And Light Therapy, Julia Marie Terman

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Personality disorders are highly comorbid with major depression; however, findings are mixed regarding their impact on depression treatment outcomes and trajectories. Limited research has studied personality pathology in winter depression, specifically. Participants were 174 adults with Major Depression, Recurrent with Seasonal Pattern from a randomized clinical trial comparing group cognitive-behavioral therapy for seasonal affective disorder (CBT-SAD) and light therapy. Participants completed the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III (MCMI-III; Millon et al., 1994) at baseline. The prevalence of MCMI-III-defined pathological …

The Supervisory Working Alliance, Relational Behavior, And Supervisee Nondisclosure : Does Humility Matter?, Englann Taylor

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The broad purpose of this study was to address gaps in the literature by applying the Relational Humility Model (RHM; Davis et al., 2010, 2011) to clinical supervision by testing the interpersonal variables of relational humility (RH; Davis et al., 2011), the supervisory working alliance (SWA, Bordin, 1983), and relational behavior (RB; Shaffer & Friedlander, 2017) as predictors of supervisee nondisclosure (SND; Ellis & Colvin, 2016; Siembor & Ellis, 2012), both clinically-related (CRND) and supervision-related (SRND). It was hypothesized that RH would moderate the relation between SWA and SRND and that the SWA would be a positive predictor of SND …

Birth Registration And Educational Access In Sub-Saharan Africa: The Case For An Explanatory Spatial Research Design, Thomas Edward Griffin

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

In 2019, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) estimated the global number of children under the age of 5 without birth registrations at 166 million, with the largest share being present in Sub-Saharan Africa. As the author witnessed firsthand while working in Cameroon, the lack of birth registration documentation (i.e. birth certificates) precluded students from progressing from primary to secondary education. Struck by this example of social exclusion, the purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which birth registration acted as a barrier to educational access in primary and secondary education systems elsewhere across Sub-Saharan Africa. An …

Elementary School Counselors' Experiences Working With Children Who Self-Harm, Maegan Tatum Jan 2021

Elementary School Counselors' Experiences Working With Children Who Self-Harm, Maegan Tatum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Elementary-aged children struggle with low self-esteem, are often impulsive, and struggle to develop appropriate coping skills. As such, many children have begun to experiment with self-harm. Because children spend a great deal of time in school, school counselors are often the first to know that a student has self-harmed. Although school counselors have extensive experience working with students who self-harm, most school counselors indicate a need for more training and implementation of school district policies regarding self-harm. Additionally, current literature focuses on the experiences of middle and high school counselors because self-harm and NSSI are primarily noted in adolescents. In …

The Contagion Of Slow Violence: The Slaughterhouse And Covid-19, Kelly Struthers Montford, Tessa Wotherspoon

Animal Studies Journal

COVID-19 has brought to the fore the violence faced by slaughterhouse workers and those they are charged with slaughtering. This article argues that COVID-19 has wrought an acceleration of the slow violence of state organized race crime (Nixon, Ward), in spreading rapidly through the slaughterhouse and to surrounding racialized communities. We show that zoonotic pandemics are the result of state organized race crime, and that abattoirs are locations of inseparable animal and racial violence. We then analyse how the law and state institutions have positioned slaughterhouse work as essential, contra workers’ claims and general knowledge that meat is an inessential …

Greedy Bat Eaters Versus Cruel Pig Killers: The Lose-Lose Battle Of Divisive Discourse, Angela Lee

Animal Studies Journal

Unsurprisingly, the circumstances and challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic have generated strong reactions. Among the more notable, Canadian musician and animal activist Bryan Adams made headlines when he went on a tirade on social media denouncing ‘fucking bat eating, wet market animal selling, virus making greedy bastards’ and advocating for veganism. This article uses this incident as a prism through which to examine the values and assumptions informing some of the central debates within the mainstream animal advocacy movement today. Certainly, there is an urgent need for a critical re-evaluation of the policies and practices that have created …
