The Intersectionality Of Anti-Fat Prejudice, Lily Moerschel Jan 2021

The Intersectionality Of Anti-Fat Prejudice, Lily Moerschel

Senior Projects Spring 2021

Abstract

Anti-fat prejudice has received little to no attention in social justice discourse. Fat Americans are discriminated against in healthcare, education and in the workplace. This discrimination includes, but is not limited to, lowered salary, unexplained termination from a job, unsolicited medical advice, body scrutiny, bullying, social exclusion, and being denied in vitro fertilization. Situating anti-fat prejudice in an intersectional framework will facilitate the dismantling of weight-normative doctrines. In the present study, participants completed a race IAT and a weight IAT, as well as a demographic questionnaire and the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM). Implicit racial bias was positively correlated …

Student well-being and satisfaction is considered in light of the many causes of stress in a student’s everyday life. The burden of tuition, familial pressure, and academic self-concept are discussed as dynamic factors in student pressure to succeed. Student well-being and the impact of stress on student learning is also introduced in the …

Framing Narratives For Resilience: A Proposal On Utilizing A Narrative Intervention For Remote College Students, Dayveliz Hernandez Muztafa Jan 2021

Framing Narratives For Resilience: A Proposal On Utilizing A Narrative Intervention For Remote College Students, Dayveliz Hernandez Muztafa

Senior Projects Spring 2021

Globally, COVID-19 left students vulnerable to the mounting stress of balancing different role responsibilities all under one roof. This period of isolation negatively impacted people’s mental health: parents’ poor well being obscured their children’s needs with increased life demands, an increase of verbal aggression within these relationships were visible, and students reported higher levels of academic stress (PeConga et al., 2020; Prime et al., 2020; Lee et al., 2021; Horita et al., 2021). Because demands on parent-child relationships are high, resilience’s protective factors are at risk with low family cohesion (Rivera et al., 2008). Therefore, this proposal aims to ameliorate …

Social media platforms are increasingly becoming part of the everyday life of Americans. The increasing use of social media platforms has been parallel to the declining mental health of adolescents, and young adults causing scientists and the public alike to wonder if there is a link between these trends. The aim of this study was to explore how the self-regulation framework can enrich social media research by taking into account individual differences in goal pursuit, and conflict. In addition, this study aimed to clarify the relationship between screen time and mental health. Social media use, mental health, and self-regulation strategies …

School Mental Health Professionals' Perceived Efficacy Of Violence Prevention Programs And School Climate In Rural Schools, Jennifer Rotzal

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In the United States, incidents of school violence increased 113 percent during the 2017-2018 school year from the 2016-2017 school year (Klinger, 2019). This increase in violence in schools makes the current movement for safer schools all the more critical. Although high-profile school shootings often obtain media attention, school violence remains a significant problem in the United States. Further, aside from the tragic but statistically rare school shootings, school violence encompasses several forms of physical violence, such as assaults; sexual violence, such as rape and sexual harassment; varying forms of bullying, including cyberbullying, and bringing weapons to school. The increase …

Consumer Valuation Of And Attitudes Towards Novel Foods Produced With New Plant Engineering Techniques: A Review, John C. Beghin, Christopher Gustafson Jan 2021

Consumer Valuation Of And Attitudes Towards Novel Foods Produced With New Plant Engineering Techniques: A Review, John C. Beghin, Christopher Gustafson

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

We follow the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews to review the emerging international body of empirical evidence on consumers’ attitudes and willingness to pay (WTP) for novel foods produced with New Plant Engineering Techniques (NPETs). NPETs include genome/gene editing, cisgenesis, intragenesis, and RNA interference. These novel foods are often beneficial for the environment and human health and more sustainable under increasingly prevalent climate extremes. These techniques can also improve animal welfare and disease resistance when applied to animals. Despite these abilities of NPETs, evidence suggests that many, but not all, consumers discount these novel foods relative to conventional ones. Our …

The History Of Spokane Falls W.T. 1871-1891, An Example Of A Colonial Built Environment, Jacob Adamson Jan 2021

The History Of Spokane Falls W.T. 1871-1891, An Example Of A Colonial Built Environment, Jacob Adamson

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

The history of Spokane Falls's built environment within Washington Territory exemplifies the Pacific Northwest's resettlement and reconstruction in the nineteenth century. The initial benefit of Spokane Falls' geography existed within the primary natural advantage of the waterpower of the falls on the Spokane River. The secondary natural advantage in human-induced transportation networks allowed the settlement center-place status. Spokane Falls W.T. developed as center-places for the periphery's agricultural and mining commodities under a theoretical and structuralized [urban] model. An interpretation of the physical and geographical history of Spokane Falls's built environment from 1871 to 1891 occurred where the city's layout existed …

Imagining China: Exploring The Discursive Limitations On Foreign Policy, Emma K. Bailey Jan 2021

Imagining China: Exploring The Discursive Limitations On Foreign Policy, Emma K. Bailey

Senior Projects Spring 2021

This project explores how the U.S. discursive framework on China results in consistently limited foreign policy approaches, because it engages with a construction of China that exists only in imagination. I trace this modern political discourse from its reestablishment of Sino-American relations under Nixon. Then move on to the Obama administration, which represents an important juncture in China’s rise to global superpower. I then conclude with the short tracing of this discourse and related foreign policy in the Trump and Biden administrations.

Merging The Waves: An Eclectic Approach To Practicing Acceptance And Commitment Therapy And Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Diksha Chittavidya-Ananda

Senior Projects Spring 2021

Surveys of major trends in psychotherapy reveal that the large majority of psychotherapists draw therapeutic strategies from a number of different theoretical orientations. Among the most endorsed theoretical orientations by contemporary therapists are cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based therapies. Despite the widespread tendency for therapists to eclectically combine theories, few sources exist to guide therapists in cohesively using both CBT and mindfulness theories together in clinical practice. This paper will discuss the clinical and empirical rationale for (and against) using CBT in conjunction with acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and explore how both therapies can be systematically used together …

Self-Determination In The Western Sahara: Obstacles And Obligations, Léa Gervais Glaenzer Jan 2021

Self-Determination In The Western Sahara: Obstacles And Obligations, Léa Gervais Glaenzer

Senior Projects Spring 2021

This paper aims to investigate the story of a country that was colonized by Spain, abandoned by Madrid, and subsequently claimed by Morocco. Spanish Sahara, now known as Western Sahara, is the territory in question. When Spanish Sahara was left by Spain to fend for itself in 1975, King Hassan of Morocco claimed sovereignty over it. King Hassan saw a potential “Greater Morocco”, which, in his view, encompassed Morocco-proper and the former Spanish Sahara. Since becoming recognized as a non-self-governing territory, most of Western Sahara has been occupied by Morocco and much of its native population resides in Tindouf refugee …

Cultural Taxation And College Students: Undergraduate College Students And Their Experiences With Unfair Cultural And Identity Taxation, Sherry Chowdhury

Senior Projects Spring 2021

A popular but burdensome commonality amongst minorities is the seemingly universal experience of bearing some mental or emotional burden as a result of our identities and membership in said minority group, where expectations are made of us to educate, endure, and explain culturally relevant issues. Amado Padilla (1994) initially coined this experience with the term “cultural taxation,” but specifically in relation to faculty of color and ethnic scholars who did double the work their White colleagues did in respective fields. As much past research on cultural taxation and identity taxation (Hirschfield & Joseph, 2012) has been conducted largely on faculty …

Reducing Youth Incarceration Through Protections In Childhood Development: A Case Study Of West Virginia, Claire Heather Virginia Lindsay Jan 2021

Reducing Youth Incarceration Through Protections In Childhood Development: A Case Study Of West Virginia, Claire Heather Virginia Lindsay

Senior Projects Spring 2021

Childhood Development is a trajectory that is subject to many risks and protections, enacted by a host of institutions, systems and actors. High rates of youth incarceration in the U.S. demonstrate one of the ways risk factors in childhood can lead to outcomes that are often very harmful to development beyond childhood. West Virginia has the highest rate of youth incarceration in the U.S. and therefore offers a unique look into what systems are at play when considering vulnerable youth populations. Through Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory I examine the various systems of childhood development and how they interact to affect …

“Home Is Where You Make It”: Navigating Culture & Society As A 1.5 Generation Guyanese Immigrant In The United States, Daniella P. Mingo

Senior Projects Spring 2021

Based on the experiences of twelve 1.5 generation Guyanese immigrants living in the United States, this thesis serves to understand the strategies that some immigrants may choose as they assimilate into the United States. This study highlights the acculturation preferences of Guyanese immigrants adjusting to the United States while challenging current assimilation theories. It specifically focuses on the understanding of cultural and social capital and how this ultimately influences the attitudes that these immigrants have towards socio-economic values like education/career choices. With an emphasis on language, food, and rituals/holidays, I propose a new way of defining culture and argue that …
