Practice Research Methods In Social Work: Processes, Applications And Implications For Social Service Organisations, Bowen Mcbeath, Michael J. Austin, Sarah Carnochan, Emmeline Chuang
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Although social work research is commonly rooted within social service settings, it can be difficult for social work researchers and practitioners to develop and sustain participatory studies that specifically promote knowledge sharing and service improvement involving organisational practice. One participatory approach is practice research (PR), which involves social work researchers and practitioners collaborating to define, understand and try to improve the delivery of health and social care services and organisational structures and processes. The two goals of this commentary are to introduce essential methods and approaches to PR and to identify points of connection involving PR and social service organisational …

Librarians And Libraries As Agents Of Transformation In The Reformation Of Correctional Centres Inmates, Emmanuel Chidiadi Onwubiko
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Information has remained the most sought for ingredient for development and only means through which one can clear his state of uncertainty. This study is a survey aimed at ascertaining the functions of the library as an agent of transformation of correctional centre inmates using the Abakaliki, Ebonyi State Correctional Centre as a case in point. The study was guided by five (5) research objectives and questions while the research employed descriptive survey design. The primary instruments used for data collection are a two-set questionnaire titled: Correctional Centre Facility Based Questionnaire (CCFBQ) and Inmate Questionnaire (IQ), direct observation and interview. …
Interpreting Egypt's January 25th Through The Ideology Of Revolution, Brian Keckeisen
Interpreting Egypt's January 25th Through The Ideology Of Revolution, Brian Keckeisen
Archived Theses and Dissertations
The events that began on January 25, 2011 were quickly labeled revolutionary by actors, critics and other media. This thesis unpacks the assumptions that underlie such a characterization, critiquing in turn the concept of revolution as a distinctly modern conceptualization that collapses time and space. The author argues that the French revolution was the first historical iteration of such an event that was understood through the contemporaneous ideology of revolution, showing how actors came to understand themselves as historical agents. He then selects a few works that are representative of revolutionary discourse in Egypt during the period widely identified as …

St. Cloud Area Quarterly Business Report, Vol. 23, No. 4, King Banaian, Richard A. Macdonald
St. Cloud Area Quarterly Business Report
The economic recovery from the unrelenting COVID shock continues in the St. Cloud area as firms report an optimistic future outlook and employment grows. However, underlying this optimism are increases in wages, prices, capital expenditures, and worker shortages that may prove unsustainable in a post-COVID economy. Strong future optimism by surveyed firms is restrained by the reality that monetary and fiscal stimulus is abating perhaps faster than the pandemic.
Data released by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) indicate St. Cloud area employment increased 2% over the twelve months ending October 2021, but still 4,493 (4%) below …

Collaborative Digital Problem-Solving: Power, Relationships, And Participation, Gloria E. Jacobs, Jill Castek
Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
The study examines the collaborative nature of problem solving as dyads and triads of adults were grouped to solve digital problems using online resources. Digital problem solving involves the nimble use of skills, strategies, and mindsets to navigate online in everyday contexts using novel resources, tools, and interfaces, in efficient and flexible ways, to accomplish personal and professional goals. Findings address the nature of collaborative talk during digital problem solving through three interrelated categories of themes gleaned from discourse analysis: (a) power, (b) relationships, and (c) participation. These themes offer a nuanced understanding of collaborative interactions during digital problem solving. …
Mental Health In Italy: Systems, Stigma, And Impact Of Covid-19, Charley Nyzio
Mental Health In Italy: Systems, Stigma, And Impact Of Covid-19, Charley Nyzio
CISLA Senior Integrative Projects
In 1978, Italy became the first European nation to radically change its mental healthcare system. Psychiatric hospitals were shut down, and a community-based publicly-funded system of mental healthcare took its place. This reform sought to restore dignity to those with mental illnesses through rehabilitation and increased participation in the community and daily activities. Though characteristics of marginalization and exclusion were relatively eliminated, covert stigmas surrounding mental illness remain a persisting problem. This review seeks to 1) evaluate the historical progression of mental health reform as well as the effectiveness of the current system of mental healthcare in Italy 2) explore …

They Are Just Light Bulbs, Right? The Personality Antecedents Of Household Energy-Saving Behavioral Intentions Among Young Millennials And Gen Z, Minhao Dai, Tianen Chen
Faculty Articles
Small individual behaviors such as household energy-saving behaviors may have major environmental impacts. Individuals may combat global warming by replacing traditional light bulbs with more energy-efficient light bulbs such as LED bulbs, which save electricity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Guided by the integrative model of behavioral prediction, the current study explored the effects of five individual personality differences (i.e., consideration of future consequences, environmental value orientation, individualism and collectivism, regulatory focus, and self-monitoring) on young Millennials' and Gen Z's attitudes, perceived norms, perceived control, and intention to switch light bulbs. The results of a survey indicated that environmental value …

Psychology Faculty Research
Most prior research on resilience to HIV/AIDS has utilized quantitative tools (e.g., scales and surveys) to examine individual-level assets (e.g., self-efficacy, hope, optimism) that researchers believe represent or approximate resilience to HIV/AIDS with minimal consideration for the perspectives of men who have sex with men (MSM), the population that has remained at greatest risk of, and the most impacted by HIV/AIDS in North America since the 1980s. The aim of this qualitative study is to identify community-level resources that bolster resilience to HIV/AIDS based specifically on the perspectives and lived experiences of middle-aged and older (MAO) MSM living with HIV/AIDS. …

Defining And Detecting Toxicity On Social Media: Context And Knowledge Are Key, Amit Sheth, Valerie Shalin, Ugur Kursuncu
Publications
As the role of online platforms has become increasingly prominent for communication, toxic behaviors, such as cyberbullying and harassment, have been rampant in the last decade. On the other hand, online toxicity is multi-dimensional and sensitive in nature, which makes its detection challenging. As the impact of exposure to online toxicity can lead to serious implications for individuals and communities, reliable models and algorithms are required for detecting and understanding such communications. In this paper We define toxicity to provide a foundation drawing social theories. Then, we provide an approach that identifies multiple dimensions of toxicity and incorporates explicit knowledge …

How Can Stem Retention Rates At Bgsu Be Increased Both In And Out Of The Classroom?, Josalyn A. Coffee
Honors Projects
Previous research in STEM student retention rates showed a gap in knowledge regarding why this group of student experience higher rates of burnout than other groups of students. This study investigated the barriers STEM students at BGSU experienced. A survey was sent out to STEM and non-STEM students alike that asked questions regarding student’s personal history before attending BGSU, their course experiences at BGSU, and the levels of support they have outside of BGSU. The survey data showed that there was little difference in the rates that students switch majors solely based on being in the STEM field. The data …
