Shifting Landscapes: The Effects Of Gentrification On Homelessness In Los Angeles County, Hannah Huining Deng

CMC Senior Theses

Gentrification, characterized by the influx of young professionals into low-income neighborhoods, is reshaping communities across the US. This study investigates how gentrification impacts homelessness rates through the mechanisms of median housing values and educational attainment. Using a longitudinal design, data was gathered on census tracts and service planning areas located within Los Angeles County spanning 7 years (2011, 2013, and 2015 to 2019). Census tract data was categorized into gentrifiable and nongentrifiable subgroups to establish a more discernible cause-and-effect relationship. As hypothesized, the study results show that gentrification is associated with increased rates of homelessness through increased bachelor’s degree attainment. …

Exploring The Factors That Influence Female Offending In The U.S. And Mexico, Dana Villasenor Jan 2024

Exploring The Factors That Influence Female Offending In The U.S. And Mexico, Dana Villasenor

CMC Senior Theses

Hollywood has painted a picture of the criminal woman as a sexy, sneaky, and often psychotic female fatale. This is because men run Hollywood. Much like movies, research on why women offend had historically focused on men as their stellar. However, towards the turn of the century and with the disproportionate rise in female incarceration, literature caught up to the fact that women and men do not experience the same socialization, standards, or reality and, therefore, have different reasons for and ways of offending. This research explores those reasons for women in the U.S. and Mexico and paints the picture …

Rational Economic Man As Bourgeois Ideology: A Critique Of The Ways Subjugation Is Reproduced, Sarah Seager

Senior Projects Spring 2024

This project investigates the ways the Rational Economic Man reproduces bourgeois class and ideology. Each of the systems that participate in this reproduction are interconnected and deeply rely on each other to maintain a hierarchy of power and access. Economics as discipline, the state, family as an economic unit, and the healthcare system are all self-serving mechanisms that reproduce subjugation and benefit those already in power.

"Nous Sommes Enfants Avant Migrants" | "We Are Children Before Immigrants" The Making And Unmaking Of The Child Migrant Through Age Assessments In France, Hannah Wynters-Wright Jan 2024

"Nous Sommes Enfants Avant Migrants" | "We Are Children Before Immigrants" The Making And Unmaking Of The Child Migrant Through Age Assessments In France, Hannah Wynters-Wright

Senior Projects Spring 2024

Amidst an increasingly restrictive immigration landscape, this research is focused on the practice of age assessments conducted on unaccompanied migrant minors in France. Despite the rise in international legislation safeguarding the rights of children, irrespective of citizenship status, France lacks a unified strategy for their protection. Instead, dozens of local government offices (called départements) carry out highly subjective age assessments to determine whether an unaccompanied migrant minor qualifies for protection. These offices enact a conflicting mandate in which the duty to protect all children is entangled with immigration enforcement practices. Against this backdrop, this research seeks to explore how the …

Maintaining Well-Being Within A Culture Of Ableism: The False Self, Defenses, And The Disability Identity, Nina Therese Bakoyiannis Jan 2024

Maintaining Well-Being Within A Culture Of Ableism: The False Self, Defenses, And The Disability Identity, Nina Therese Bakoyiannis

Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-

Disabled individuals face rampant discrimination in the form of ableist microaggressions (Kattari, 2019) and healthcare neglect (Komisar et al., 2005; Power & Bartlett, 2019), yet research on the impact of ableism on well-being is lacking. Watermeyer (2012) posits that disabled people employ necessary defensive strategies to cope with the reality of such oppressive confounds, such as Winnicott’s False Self (1960)—the artificial persona one consciously or unconsciously employs to protect oneself from social rejection. However, in the only study known to the researcher that assesses the role of the False Self within the disability community, Eichengreen & Hoofien (2017) explore discriminatory …

Attraction Effects In Referential Dependencies, Emily Graham Jan 2024

Attraction Effects In Referential Dependencies, Emily Graham

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations

This dissertation explores the differences in the real-time processing of long-distance dependencies and how the processing of these dependencies functions within a cue-based retrieval model. During subject-verb agreement (SVA) comprehension, the processing of the verb is influenced by attractor noun phrases (NPs) that cannot control agreement. Referential dependencies, however, are less susceptible to such attraction effects. Many studies examining ungrammatical sentences in which a reflexive or pronoun mismatches with its antecedent in number/gender have indicated that the processing of these referentially dependent elements is largely uninfluenced by grammatically unavailable attractor NPs. These disparities have been taken to indicate that SVA …

Processing Visual Form Information During L1 And L2 Lexical Access, Xinwen Zhang Jan 2024

Processing Visual Form Information During L1 And L2 Lexical Access, Xinwen Zhang

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations

This study investigates visual word recognition in the first language (L1) and second language (L2). Several studies in this area have reported L1/L2 processing differences at the lexical form level; however, the nature of these differences remains a matter of theoretical debate. The present study examines the extent to which these differences might relate to disparities in orthographic processing in the L1 and L2. Specifically, it uses masked identity priming to investigate whether skilled L2 readers differ from skilled L1 readers in terms of the efficiency with which they access abstract lexical representations during the early stages of visual word …

What’S In A Threat: A Corpus-Based, Speech Act And Lexicogrammatical Approach To Threats In English, Natalie Raun Carter Jan 2024

What’S In A Threat: A Corpus-Based, Speech Act And Lexicogrammatical Approach To Threats In English, Natalie Raun Carter

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations

Threats can be made without using language at all, but previous research on the language of threats is limited and primarily examines threats with a small amount of constructed data. Building on Austin (1962) and Searle (1965; 1969)’s speech act theory and using a corpus of naturally occurring data consisting of 827 threatening texts from publicly available websites and law enforcement, this dissertation determines what constitutes a threat, as well as the interdependence between words and grammar.

Pragmatically, this dissertation identifies four required felicity conditions that must be met to constitute a threat—building on those set by John Searle, Bruce …

The Effects Of Behavioral Skills Training For Goal Setting On Skill Acquisition, Michelle Beaulieu

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

With many U.S. adults being diagnosed with or at high risk for largely preventable chronic diseases, positive health behavior change is a critical public health concern. Behaviors such as physical activity, healthy eating, substance use (e.g., alcohol, nicotine) have all been linked to risk of various chronic diseases and long-term health outcomes. Health coaching has emerged to fill the gap within the current healthcare system surrounding behavior change treatment. Many health coaching organizations and resources claim that the practice incorporates client-directive care. However, further research is warranted for determining what skills are necessary for health coaching clients to successfully work …

Trust Relationships: Tales From The Web, Magdoleen Ierlan

Trust is an important component of any purchasing situation. In an online setting, trust becomes even more important as buyer and seller are not able to directly interact with one another. Organizations have attempted to address this shortcoming by allowing third parties to offer reviews of the product in question. This paper addresses how consumers process these product reviews.

By rooting this paper in trust and uncertainty reduction theory, a testable model was developed. The model was tested, and in general, more helpful reviews, …
