Humans And Other Animals: A Biological And Ethical Perspective, Ashley Montagu Jan 1986

Humans And Other Animals: A Biological And Ethical Perspective, Ashley Montagu

Attitudes Towards Animals Collection

What I have been hoping to do in this talk is to provide the scientific basis for the biological kinship of humans with other animals in particular and the whole of nature in general, and to show that the ethical perspective to which such a demonstration leads is inherent in the very nature of nature, that cooperation, love, not conflict and aggression, as we have long been led to believe, is the dominant principle by which living creatures are designed to live with each other. It was not Darwin, but the muscular Darwinists, like Herbert Spencer, who wasn't a biologist …

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

From 1970–1980, several conferences were held and publications produced regarding the need to improve data collection on indicators of women’s status, as well as a number of publications offering concrete proposals for such improvements. During this period, the disaggregation of statistics by sex has expanded in many countries and indicators, and such disaggregated statistics are presented with increased frequency in international data compiled by United Nations specialized organizations. In addition, two major sets of statistics on the status of women have appeared. These statistics on socioeconomic indicators of the status of women in developing countries include statistics on men as …

The Trail Of Education In Two Cities: Omaha And Manila, Navidad T. Nacianceno, Floyd T. Waterman

Publications

Never, perhaps, in the history of local communities has the educational system been recognized openly as being interwoven with the community as it is now. In individuals' aspiration, for better lives and as a primary component of the equation of education and community, education is viewed as an avenue of promise. There can be no doubt of its universal acceptance as the key to the most fervently desired goals, security for the future and an understanding of self and others.

The New England Economic Revitalization And Future Research Priorities, James M. Howell Jan 1985

The New England Economic Revitalization And Future Research Priorities, James M. Howell

New England Journal of Public Policy

New England's recent economic revitalization is largely attributed to the region's success in technological innovation and adaptation. This capacity to supplant older, maturing technologies with new technologies — a willingness to continually shed the old to make room for the new — has been a characteristic of New England since the early nineteenth century. At that time, as today, the critical factors in the process of technological development were the presence of investment capital, skilled labor, entrepreneurs, and, above all, preeminent colleges and universities that foster unconventional thinking and risk-taking. While the region's economy should continue to benefit from these …

The purpose of this paper is to reveal the nature of institutional adaptation of the University within the context of the political upheavals in twentieth-century Spain. I will focus on the changing structure of the University under the Republican era, the Franco years, and the present democracy. Elements within this changing educational structure suggest an ideal typology, a hypothetical university which manages to rise above its role as a mere function of the social milieu. By contrast, the reality of the University as an institution controlled by political regimes is evident throughout the paper. The contention herein is that among …
