This chapter introduces the reader to the realm of electronic resource license agreements. It provides the reader with an overview of basic contract law as it relates to electronic resource licensing. The chapter then discusses the electronic resource license negotiation process as well as license agreement term clauses. The aim of this chapter is to provide librarians with an understanding of basic licensing concepts and language in order to aid librarians in the review and negotiation of their own license agreements. While the reference interview remains the vehicle whereby librarians are able to understand the information needs of users in order to assist them, the ways in which the reference interview is conducted have changed with time and technology. This chapter provides a brief history of the evolution of the reference interview, from the face-to-face transaction to the current trends of e-mail and chat software mediated reference interviews, and examines application of these current trends in virtual reference services. This presentation was delivered at the Conference for Ontario Law Association Libraries in 2005. It looks at the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) and the origins of the KF Modified classification scheme. It discusses the basic call number structure and introduces some of the special features of KF Modified (e.g. Geographic Divisions (G.D.s); Constitutional law; Taxation. Income tax).
