In Search Of The Criterion Standard Test In Diagnostic Testing, Thanos D. Kantarelis, Demetri Kantarelis
In Search Of The Criterion Standard Test In Diagnostic Testing, Thanos D. Kantarelis, Demetri Kantarelis
Economics, Finance and International Business Department Faculty Works
Given a certain technology or procedure for diagnostic testing, different cutoff points produce different sensitivity and specificity rates. The cutoff point that generates highest sensitivity and specificity establishes the Criterion Standard Test (otherwise known as the Gold Standard Test). If, subject to good reason, a new testing technology or procedure emerges, the optimum cutoff point associated with it may generate higher sensitivity and specificity and thus a new improved Criterion Standard Test. Various cutoff selection methodologies have been proposed, all based on Euclidean geometry, involving the so-called Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve. Our purpose in this paper is to recommend …

Statistics-Bierce Library Study, Tyler J. Hushour
Statistics-Bierce Library Study, Tyler J. Hushour
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This is a report from two surveys that I created and administered to students and faculty at Bierce library who came to the Circulation Desk or the Tech Desk, as well as some of my other findings when periodically looking around the library to see where students like to study or hang-out. There was a written survey given at the Circulation Desk, and a different survey given at the Tech Check-Out Desk. The project is for Melanie Smith-Farrell, the head of Access Services, and is based on a similar study Ian McCullough did in the science library. While this is …
When Words Are Worse Than Bullets: A Study Of Corruption As An Unintended Consequence Of Threats Of Sanctions, Aleksei Balanov
When Words Are Worse Than Bullets: A Study Of Corruption As An Unintended Consequence Of Threats Of Sanctions, Aleksei Balanov
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
This research contributes to the debates on the efficacy of economic sanctions as a tool of international diplomacy. It focuses on corruption, one of the potential unintended consequences of sanctions. Using multiple regression on a custom cross-sectional time series dataset of more than a thousand observations, this research finds the correlation between threats of sanctions and level of corruption statistically significant. The model suggests each new round of threats translates into a 1.25% increase in corruption for relatively clean states and a 5% increase for already corrupt states. The resulting policy implications are examined in this thesis.
Ugh…Statistics! College Students’ Attitudes And Perceptions Toward Statistics, Drew A. Doyle
Ugh…Statistics! College Students’ Attitudes And Perceptions Toward Statistics, Drew A. Doyle
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Statistics is a course that is required for a majority of undergraduate college students in a wide variety of majors. It is not just required for Statistics or Mathematics majors, but also for those undergraduate college students majoring in Biology, Engineering, Sociology, and countless other majors. It can often be seen as a daunting course, especially for those who feel that mathematics is not their strongest subject. Students begin to dislike the course before even starting and this can carry on throughout the entirety of the course. This thesis will focus primarily on students’ perceptions and attitudes toward their statistics …

“But My Lease Isn’T Up Yet!”: Finding Fault With “No-Fault” Evictions, Eloisa Rodriguez-Dod
“But My Lease Isn’T Up Yet!”: Finding Fault With “No-Fault” Evictions, Eloisa Rodriguez-Dod
Eloisa C Rodríguez-Dod
Historically, tenants could be evicted when their actions put them “at-fault.” Grounds for “at-fault” eviction (i.e., evictions for cause) include a tenant’s failure to pay rent, a tenant’s holding over after termination of the lease, a tenant’s material noncompliance with the lease agreement, and a tenant’s failure to maintain the premises materially affecting health and safety. Recently, some landlords have been evicting tenants for no fault of their own. This article focuses on three reasons for attempted “no-fault” evictions: foreclosure of the premises, proposed sale of the premises, or intended re-occupancy by the landlord. Part II of this article provides …

Two Decades Of Progress For Minorities In Aviation, David C. Ison, Rene Herron, Linda Weiland
Two Decades Of Progress For Minorities In Aviation, David C. Ison, Rene Herron, Linda Weiland
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
Diversity within the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields has historically lagged behind that which is found in other vocational paths. Aviation has also suffered poor diversity with virtually no participation among professional pilots. With both the literature specifying the benefits of diversity in the aviation workplace and potential shortages of pilots looming, it is in the interest of aerospace stakeholders to have access to the most comprehensively diverse employee pool possible. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the trends in participation by minorities who completed professional pilot education programs in the United States. Data concerning the …

Faculty Bibliography
This poster illustrates the development of statistical narratives for the work that is done in cataloging and technical services. Our work is behind the scenes but we do the technical work that transforms ordinary books into library books with access points for discoverability. Using infographics, tech services staff can illustrate the quality, quantity, and value of our important work in the library.

Library Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This poster is an example of the work I have created using cataloging statistics from Sierra, Google Sheets, and Excel. The graphs illustrate the number of books I have cataloged and discarded throughout a span of years. The graphs tell a story with the numbers. This is called a statistical narrative. These stories can be created by any library department and ultimately allow outsiders, and constituents to see the value of the academic library.
