Special Issue : Neutrosophic Multi-Criteria Decision Making, Florentin Smarandache, Jun Ye, Yan Hui Guo

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The notion of a neutrosophic quadruple BCK/BCI-number is considered in the first article (“Neutrosophic Quadruple BCK/BCI-Algebras”, by Young Bae Jun, Seok-Zun Song, Florentin Smarandache, and Hashem Bordbar), and a neutrosophic quadruple BCK/BCI-algebra, which consists of neutrosophic quadruple BCK/BCI-numbers, is constructed. Several properties are investigated, and a (positive implicative) ideal in a neutrosophic quadruple BCK-algebra and a closed ideal in a neutrosophic quadruple BCI-algebra are studied. Given subsets A and B of a BCK/BCI-algebra, the set NQ(A,B), which consists of neutrosophic quadruple BCK/BCInumbers with a condition, is established. Conditions for the set NQ(A,B) to be a (positive implicative) ideal of a …

Operational Research: Multi-Period Stowage Policies Within A Multi-Zone Storage Framework., Joseph Loeffler Jan 2018

Operational Research: Multi-Period Stowage Policies Within A Multi-Zone Storage Framework., Joseph Loeffler

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This paper will be extending the single period stowage decision model presented by [Yuan, 2017] into a multi-period stowage decision model. The stowage decision determines how incoming items are distributed and stored across multiple storage zones. The amount of items that can be picked in any given storage zone is finite within a single time period. With this constraint, this research attempts to optimize how items are stored across many zones to meet uncertain demand requirements. A simulation study will be performed to compare the stowage policies given by [Yuan, 2017] to see how well they generalize to multi-period model. …

The Vendor In A Retail Setting: A Survey, Jesse Laporte Jan 2018

The Vendor In A Retail Setting: A Survey, Jesse Laporte

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

We consider the problem of managing nonperishable inventory as a vendor in a grocer setting. To manage inventory effectively, we must meet the demand of our customers as closely as we can. Too much inventory results in holding costs and ties up a large amount of capital and too little inventory results in lost sales or substitution. It is typical in a retail setting for the vendor to have access to past ordering data, but this data is only representative of the demand when we have sufficient inventory. Otherwise, the demand exceeds the inventory on hand and we lose, in …

Random Walks On Simple Two-Dimensional Manifolds, Tom Eichlersmith Jan 2018

Random Walks On Simple Two-Dimensional Manifolds, Tom Eichlersmith

Departmental Honors Projects

A C++ implementation of random walks is constructed with examples for the plane, sphere, and torus included. This package is available publicly, and can be expanded to different situations on the included surfaces as well as other surfaces. The random walks are studied by measuring how long they take to reach a pre-defined escape region on the surface. These escape regions and their interaction with the surface are what affect the behavior of the random walks the most.

Fluid-Dynamic Models Of Geophysical Waves, Alan Compelli Jan 2018

Fluid-Dynamic Models Of Geophysical Waves, Alan Compelli

Doctoral

Geophysical waves are waves that are found naturally in the Earth's atmosphere and oceans. Internal waves, that is waves that act as an interface between uids of dierent density, are examples of geophysical waves. A uid system with a at bottom, at surface and internal wave is initially considered. The system has a depth-dependent current which mimics a typical ocean set-up and, as it is based on the surface of the rotating Earth, incorporates Coriolis forces. Using well established uid dynamic techniques, the total energy is calculated and used to determine the dynamics of the system using a procedure called …

Non-Stationary Counts With Mixture Distributions, Ziqiang Lin Jan 2018

Non-Stationary Counts With Mixture Distributions, Ziqiang Lin

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

We study a new non--stationary mixture Pengram and thinning model for time series of counts that include the effect of covariate variables on the outcome variable. Properties of the model and performance are discussed. It has a simpler likelihood function than the non--stationary INAR(1) model and therefore MLE estimators for the model's parameters are easier to find. Therefore the model offers an alternative to non--stationary INAR(1).

Spherulitic Growth And Thermodynamic Equilibrium In Multicomponent Elastic Films Under Solvent-Vapor Annealing, Ding Zhao Jan 2018

Spherulitic Growth And Thermodynamic Equilibrium In Multicomponent Elastic Films Under Solvent-Vapor Annealing, Ding Zhao

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

In this dissertation, we will study solvent-vapor induced spherulitic growth in multicomponent thin films modeled as prestressed elastic solids. The interface between the crystalline phase and the amorphous phase will be treated as an evolving thermodynamic system and no diffusion of any component will be considered.

The dissertation is divided into three parts. In Part I we will determine necessary conditions of thermodynamic equilibrium between the two solid phases, the inter- face, and the vapor. In Part II we will derive the thermodynamic driving force for spherulitic growth in multicomponent elastic thin films. In Part III we will investigate the …

A Representation Theorem For Material Tensors Of Textured Thin Sheets With Weak Planar Anisotropy, Yucong Sang Jan 2018

A Representation Theorem For Material Tensors Of Textured Thin Sheets With Weak Planar Anisotropy, Yucong Sang

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

Herein we consider material tensors that pertain to thin sheets or thin films, which we model as two-dimensional objects. We assume that the thin sheet in question carries a crystallographic texture characterized by an orientation distribution function defined on the rotation group SO(3), which is almost transversely-isotropic about the sheet normal so that mechanical and physical properties of the thin sheet have weak planar-anisotropy. We present a procedure by which a special orthonormal basis can be determined in each tensor subspace invariant under the action of the orthogonal group O(2). We call members of such special bases irreducible basis tensors …

Recurrent Neural Networks And Their Applications To Rna Secondary Structure Inference, Devin Willmott Jan 2018

Recurrent Neural Networks And Their Applications To Rna Secondary Structure Inference, Devin Willmott

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

Recurrent neural networks (RNNs) are state of the art sequential machine learning tools, but have difficulty learning sequences with long-range dependencies due to the exponential growth or decay of gradients backpropagated through the RNN. Some methods overcome this problem by modifying the standard RNN architecure to force the recurrent weight matrix W to remain orthogonal throughout training. The first half of this thesis presents a novel orthogonal RNN architecture that enforces orthogonality of W by parametrizing with a skew-symmetric matrix via the Cayley transform. We present rules for backpropagation through the Cayley transform, show how to deal with the Cayley …

Symmetric Criticality In General Relativity, Charles G. Torre Jan 2018

Symmetric Criticality In General Relativity, Charles G. Torre

Research Vignettes

In this worksheet I explore the local Lagrangian version of the Principle of Symmetric Criticality (PSC) due to Anderson, Fels, and Torre], which asserts the commutativity of the processes (i) of symmetry reduction (for finding group-invariant fields) and (ii) forming Euler-Lagrange equations. There are two obstructions to PSC, which I will call the Lie algebra obstruction and the isotropy obstruction. In this worksheet I will illustrate these obstructions in the General Theory of Relativity.

Examples Of The Birkhoff Theorem And Its Generalizations, Charles G. Torre

Tutorials on... in 1 hour or less

In this worksheet I demonstrate three versions of Birkhoff's theorem, which is a characterization of spherically symmetric solutions of the Einstein equations. The three versions considered here correspond to taking the "Einstein equations" to be: (1) the vacuum Einstein equations; (2) the Einstein equations with a cosmological constant (3) the Einstein-Maxwell equations. I will restrict my attention to 4-dimensional spacetimes.

Particle Filters For State Estimation Of Confined Aquifers, Graeme Field Jan 2018

Particle Filters For State Estimation Of Confined Aquifers, Graeme Field

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Mathematical models are used in engineering and the sciences to estimate properties of systems of interest, increasing our understanding of the surrounding world and driving technological innovation. Unfortunately, as the systems of interest grow in complexity, so to do the models necessary to accurately describe them. Analytic solutions for problems with such models are provably intractable, motivating the use of approximate yet still accurate estimation techniques. Particle filtering methods have emerged as a popular tool in the presence of such models, spreading from its origins in signal processing to a diverse set of fields throughout engineering and the sciences including …

Mathematical Models Of Mosquito Populations, Hanna Reed Jan 2018

Mathematical Models Of Mosquito Populations, Hanna Reed

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The intent of this thesis is to develop ordinary differential equation models to better understand the mosquito population. We first develop a framework model, where we determine the condition under which a natural mosquito population can persist in the environment. Wolbachia is a bacterium which limits the replication of viruses inside the mosquito which it infects. As a result, infecting a mosquito population with Wolbachia can decrease the transmission of viral mosquito-borne diseases, such as dengue. We develop another ODE model to investigate the invasion of Wolbachia in a mosquito population. In a biologically feasible situation, we determine three coexisting …

A Mixed Finite Element Method For The Coupling Of Linear Elasticity And Stokes Flow, Maranda Bean Jan 2018

A Mixed Finite Element Method For The Coupling Of Linear Elasticity And Stokes Flow, Maranda Bean

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The complex interaction between fluids and structures require the coupling the laws concerning structure mechanics and fluid dynamics and are of vital importance to many scientific and engineering fields. We propose a method for modeling the coupling of a linearly elastic solid and slow fluid flow modeled by Stokes equations. The model equations are expressed in terms of displacement, velocity and stress. With these primary variables, we use a single mixed finite element space based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle for linear elasticity to discretize the resulting system spatially. This results in more accurate approximations for stress than those obtained …

A Mathematical Model Of A Corrosion System Containing Inhibitors, Abigael Frey Jan 2018

A Mathematical Model Of A Corrosion System Containing Inhibitors, Abigael Frey

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

A two dimensional model is developed to describe how organic and inorganic inhibitors slows down the corrosion damage of a coated metal plate that contains a defect. The model contains a metal covered on one side by a coating that contains organic and inorganic inhibitors, electrolytes that are on the outside of the coating, and a small defect in the coating. The defect is an area where the coating is more porous and allows the electrolytes to leak in faster. In this model the organic inhibitor is presumed to be dissolved into the coating and the inorganic inhibitor is released …

Understanding The Nature Of Nanoscale Wetting Through All-Atom Simulations, Oliver Evans Jan 2018

Understanding The Nature Of Nanoscale Wetting Through All-Atom Simulations, Oliver Evans

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The spreading behavior of spherical and cylindrical water droplets between 30Å and 100Å in radius on a sapphire surface is investigated using all-atom molecular dynamics simulations for durations on the order of tens of nanoseconds. A monolayer film develops rapidly and wets the surface, while the bulk of the droplet spreads on top of the monolayer, maintaining the shape of a spherical cap. Unlike previous simulations in the literature, the bulk radius is found to increase to a maximum value and receed as the monolayer continues to expand. Simple time and droplet size dependence is observed for monolayer radius and …

Exploration Of Counter Examples Of Balanced Sets, Jake Allen Weber Jan 2018

Exploration Of Counter Examples Of Balanced Sets, Jake Allen Weber

Honors Program Theses

Mathematicians are often intrigued with patterns, many times finding themselves looking for pieces of structure within a data set. This research project is no different in that we have explored our vast data set for substructure.

Our goal is to identify the following: how many data points are necessary to guarantee our set has a balanced set/substructure? Naturally rephrasing the previous question, we also ask ourselves what is the largest set that does not have a balanced subset/substructure? This alternate phrasing set us down our current path. We focused on the largest sets with no balanced substructure and what they …

Adaptive Methods For Point Cloud And Mesh Processing, Zinat Afrose

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Point clouds and 3D meshes are widely used in numerous applications ranging from games to virtual reality to autonomous vehicles. This dissertation proposes several approaches for noise removal and calibration of noisy point cloud data and 3D mesh sharpening methods. Order statistic filters have been proven to be very successful in image processing and other domains as well. Different variations of order statistics filters originally proposed for image processing are extended to point cloud filtering in this dissertation. A brand-new adaptive vector median is proposed in this dissertation for removing noise and outliers from noisy point cloud data.

The major …

Computational Investigation Of Energetic Materials: Influence Of Intramolecular And Intermolecular Interactions On Sensitivity, Ashley Lauren Shoaf Jan 2018

Computational Investigation Of Energetic Materials: Influence Of Intramolecular And Intermolecular Interactions On Sensitivity, Ashley Lauren Shoaf

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

The development of novel high energy density materials (HEDMs) with superior energetic properties depends on characterizing how and why detonation occurs. Detonation is highly energetic and a nearly instantaneous process, making experimental studies challenging; thus, computational modeling through density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) can be used to propose weakened, or activated, bonds that break to initiate explosive decomposition, termed trigger bonds. Bond activation is characterized by the Wiberg bond index (WBI), a measure of interatomic electron density. Trigger bonds in HEDMs are commonly found in explosophores, functional groups that contribute to energetic potential such as X-NO2 …

Optimal Supply Delivery Under Military Specific Constraints, Talena Fletcher Jan 2018

Optimal Supply Delivery Under Military Specific Constraints, Talena Fletcher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Through-out military history, the need to safely and effectively allocate resources to various military operations was a task of extreme importance. Satisfying the needs of multiple consumers by optimally pairing with appropriate suppliers falls into the category of vehicle routing problems (VRP), which has been intensively studied over the years. In general, finding the optimal solution to VRP is known to be NP-hard. The proposed solutions rely on mathematical programming and the size of the problems that can be optimally solved is typically limited. In military settings, balancing the needs of multiple consumers with the current operational environment has always …

Multiclass Classification Using Support Vector Machines, Duleep Prasanna W. Rathgamage Don Jan 2018

Multiclass Classification Using Support Vector Machines, Duleep Prasanna W. Rathgamage Don

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we discuss different SVM methods for multiclass classification and introduce the Divide and Conquer Support Vector Machine (DCSVM) algorithm which relies on data sparsity in high dimensional space and performs a smart partitioning of the whole training data set into disjoint subsets that are easily separable. A single prediction performed between two partitions eliminates one or more classes in a single partition, leaving only a reduced number of candidate classes for subsequent steps. The algorithm continues recursively, reducing the number of classes at each step until a final binary decision is made between the last two classes …

Wavelet Anova Bisection Method For Identifying Simulation Model Bias, Andrew D. Atkinson, Raymond R. Hill, Joseph J. Pignatiello Jr., G. Geoffrey Vining, Edward D. White, Eric Chicken

Faculty Publications

High-resolution computer models can simulate complex systems and processes in order to evaluate a solution quickly and inexpensively. Many simulation models produce dynamic functional output, such as a set of time-series data generated during a process. These computer models require verification and validation (V&V) to assess the correctness of these simulations. In particular, the model validation effort evaluates if the model is an appropriate representation of the real-world system that it is meant to simulate. However, when assessing a model capable of generating functional output, it is useful to learn more than simply whether the model is valid or invalid. …

Investigation Of Toppling Ball Flight In American Football With A Mechanical Field-Goal Kicker, Chase M Pfeifer, Timothy J. Gay, Jeff A. Hawks, Shane Farritor, Judith M. Burnfield Jan 2018

Investigation Of Toppling Ball Flight In American Football With A Mechanical Field-Goal Kicker, Chase M Pfeifer, Timothy J. Gay, Jeff A. Hawks, Shane Farritor, Judith M. Burnfield

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

A mechanical field-goal kicking machine was used to investigate toppling ball flight in American football place-kicking, eliminating a number of uncontrollable impact variables present with a human kicker. Ball flight trajectories were recorded using a triangulation-based projectile tracking system to account for the football’s 3-dimensional position during flight as well as initial launch conditions. The football flights were described using kinematic equations relating to projectile motion including stagnant air drag and were compared to measured trajectories as well as projectile motion equations that exclude stagnant air drag. Measured football flight range deviations from the non-drag equations of projectile motion corresponded …

High Accuracy Methods And Regularization Techniques For Fluid Flows And Fluid-Fluid Interaction, Mustafa Aggul Jan 2018

High Accuracy Methods And Regularization Techniques For Fluid Flows And Fluid-Fluid Interaction, Mustafa Aggul

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This dissertation contains several approaches to resolve irregularity issues of CFD problems, including a decoupling of non-linearly coupled fluid-fluid interaction, due to high Reynolds number. New models present not only regularize the linear systems but also produce high accurate solutions both in space and time. To achieve this goal, methods solve a computationally attractive artificial viscosity approximation of the target problem, and then utilize a correction approach to make it high order accurate. This way, they all allow the usage of legacy code | a frequent requirement in the simulation of fluid flows in complex geometries. In addition, they all …

Inclusion Of Blocking Power For A Complete Voting Power Analysis In The Imf, Shiwani Varal Jan 2018

Inclusion Of Blocking Power For A Complete Voting Power Analysis In The Imf, Shiwani Varal

Senior Independent Study Theses

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) calculates the voting power of a country by dividing the total of one member's votes by the total of all members' votes. This method of calculating the power of a state judges power as voting weight. However, voting weights are the total number of votes a country has in an institution, while voting power is the influence a country has on a policy decision. A better approach to calculate this voting power within an institution is by using voting power indices. However, literature only calculates the winning power, while voting power is defined as the …

Application Of Evolutionary Network Concept In Structuring Mathematics Curriculum, Aditi Mitra

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Phylogenetic tree and in general, evolutionary network, has found its application well beyond the biological fields and has even percolated into recent high demanding areas, such as data mining and social media chain reactions. An extensive survey of its current applications are presented here. An attempt has been made to apply the very concept in the mathematics course curriculum inside a degree program. Various features of the tree structure are identified within the curriculum network. To highlight various key components and to enhance the visual effect, several diagrams are presented. The combined effect of these diagram provides a sense of …
