High-Order Integral Equation Methods For Quasi-Magnetostatic And Corrosion-Related Field Analysis With Maritime Applications, Robert Pfeiffer Jan 2018

High-Order Integral Equation Methods For Quasi-Magnetostatic And Corrosion-Related Field Analysis With Maritime Applications, Robert Pfeiffer

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

This dissertation presents techniques for high-order simulation of electromagnetic fields, particularly for problems involving ships with ferromagnetic hulls and active corrosion-protection systems.

A set of numerically constrained hexahedral basis functions for volume integral equation discretization is presented in a method-of-moments context. Test simulations demonstrate the accuracy achievable with these functions as well as the improvement brought about in system conditioning when compared to other basis sets.

A general method for converting between a locally-corrected Nyström discretization of an integral equation and a method-of-moments discretization is presented next. Several problems involving conducting and magnetic-conducting materials are solved to verify the accuracy …

Direct Immunoassays And Their Performance: Theoretical Modelling Of The Effects Of Antibody Orientation And Associated Kinetics, Dana Mackey, Eilis Kelly, Robert Nooney, Richard O'Kennedy Jan 2018

Direct Immunoassays And Their Performance: Theoretical Modelling Of The Effects Of Antibody Orientation And Associated Kinetics, Dana Mackey, Eilis Kelly, Robert Nooney, Richard O'Kennedy

Articles

The orientation and activity of antibodies immobilized on solid surfaces are of direct relevance to many immunosensing applications. We therefore investigate a mathematical model which estimates the fraction of antibodies which are available for reaction in a randomly adsorbed sample. Numerical simulations are presented which highlight the separate effects of antibody orientation, accessibility and loss of binding ability on the amount of captured antigen. The assay response can then be expressed as a function of total antibody density and used for optimizing the surface coverage strategy under various conditions.

Blow Up Solution Of Bose-Einstein Condensates With Anisotropic Trapping Potential And Rotation, Christopher Leonard Jan 2018

Blow Up Solution Of Bose-Einstein Condensates With Anisotropic Trapping Potential And Rotation, Christopher Leonard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this paper we will analyze a nonlinear Schrodinger equation with quadratic anisotropic trapping potential used to describe a Bose-Einstein condensate. We will find sufficient condition for the global existence of the solution and for the blow up result using physical properties associated to the equation such as the mass, energy, and angular momentum along with some other identities related to the equation. We will finish the thesis with showing some graphical representations describing the solution of the equation.

Pseudo-Companion Matrices For Polynomial Systems, Melinda Kleczynski Jan 2018

Pseudo-Companion Matrices For Polynomial Systems, Melinda Kleczynski

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Roots of a scalar polynomial in one variable are frequently found by computing the eigenvalues of the standard companion matrix. In this exploratory work, we introduce the pseudo-companion matrix for finding roots of multivariable polynomial systems. In some cases, a perturbation of the polynomial system is used for the matrix construction, yielding approximate roots of the original polynomial system. The coordinates of the roots, or their approximations, are obtained from the eigenvectors of this matrix. In this thesis, we describe the process of constructing the pseudo-companion matrix and computing the polynomial roots using illustrative examples.

Hopf Bifurcation Analysis Of Chaotic Chemical Reactor Model, Daniel Mandragona Jan 2018

Hopf Bifurcation Analysis Of Chaotic Chemical Reactor Model, Daniel Mandragona

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Bifurcations in Huang's chaotic chemical reactor system leading from simple dynamics into chaotic regimes are considered. Following the linear stability analysis, the periodic orbit resulting from a Hopf bifurcation of any of the six fixed points is constructed analytically by the method of multiple scales across successively slower time scales, and its stability is then determined by the resulting final secularity condition. Furthermore, we run numerical simulations of our chemical reactor at a particular fixed point of interest, alongside a set of parameter values that forces our system to undergo Hopf bifurcation. These numerical simulations then verify our analysis of …

Iterative Matrix Factorization Method For Social Media Data Location Prediction, Natchanon Suaysom Jan 2018

Iterative Matrix Factorization Method For Social Media Data Location Prediction, Natchanon Suaysom

HMC Senior Theses

Since some of the location of where the users posted their tweets collected by social media company have varied accuracy, and some are missing. We want to use those tweets with highest accuracy to help fill in the data of those tweets with incomplete information. To test our algorithm, we used the sets of social media data from a city, we separated them into training sets, where we know all the information, and the testing sets, where we intentionally pretend to not know the location. One prediction method that was used in (Dukler, Han and Wang, 2016) requires appending one-hot …

Sequential Probing With A Random Start, Joshua Miller Jan 2018

Sequential Probing With A Random Start, Joshua Miller

HMC Senior Theses

Processing user requests quickly requires not only fast servers, but also demands methods to quickly locate idle servers to process those requests. Methods of finding idle servers are analogous to open addressing in hash tables, but with the key difference that servers may return to an idle state after having been busy rather than staying busy. Probing sequences for open addressing are well-studied, but algorithms for locating idle servers are less understood. We investigate sequential probing with a random start as a method for finding idle servers, especially in cases of heavy traffic. We present a procedure for finding the …

Wildfire Emissions In The Context Of Global Change And The Implications For Mercury Pollution, Aditya Kumar Jan 2018

Wildfire Emissions In The Context Of Global Change And The Implications For Mercury Pollution, Aditya Kumar

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Wildfires are episodic disturbances that exert a significant influence on the Earth system. They emit substantial amounts of atmospheric pollutants, which can impact atmospheric chemistry/composition and the Earth’s climate at the global and regional scales. This work presents a collection of studies aimed at better estimating wildfire emissions of atmospheric pollutants, quantifying their impacts on remote ecosystems and determining the implications of 2000s-2050s global environmental change (land use/land cover, climate) for wildfire emissions following the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) A1B socioeconomic scenario.

A global fire emissions model is developed to compile global wildfire emission inventories for major atmospheric …

Homogenization In Perforated Domains And With Soft Inclusions, Brandon C. Russell Jan 2018

Homogenization In Perforated Domains And With Soft Inclusions, Brandon C. Russell

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

In this dissertation, we first provide a short introduction to qualitative homogenization of elliptic equations and systems. We collect relevant and known results regarding elliptic equations and systems with rapidly oscillating, periodic coefficients, which is the classical setting in homogenization of elliptic equations and systems. We extend several classical results to the so called case of perforated domains and consider materials reinforced with soft inclusions. We establish quantitative H1-convergence rates in both settings, and as a result deduce large-scale Lipschitz estimates and Liouville-type estimates for solutions to elliptic systems with rapidly oscillating periodic bounded and measurable coefficients. Finally, …

A Two-Dimensional Finite Element Model Of The Grain Boundary Based On Thermo-Mechanical Strain Gradient Plasticity, Yooseob Song, George Z. Voyiadjis Jan 2018

A Two-Dimensional Finite Element Model Of The Grain Boundary Based On Thermo-Mechanical Strain Gradient Plasticity, Yooseob Song, George Z. Voyiadjis

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this work, a two-dimensional finite element model for the grain boundary flow rule is developed based on the thermo-mechanical gradient-enhanced plasticity theory. The proposed model is temperature-dependent. A special attention is given to physical and micromechanical nature of dislocation interactions in combination with thermal activation on stored and dissipated energy. Thermodynamic conjugate microforces are decomposed into energetic and dissipative components. Correspondingly, two different grain boundary material length scales are present in the proposed model. Finally, numerical examples are solved in order to explore characteristics of the proposed grain boundary flow rule.

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Neutrosophy is a new branch of philosophy which studies the origin, nature and scope of neutralities. This has formed the basis for a series of mathematical theories that generalize the classical and fuzzy theories such as the neutrosophic sets and the neutrosophic logic. In the paper, the fundamental concepts related to neutrosophy and its antecedents are presented. Additionally, fundamental concepts of artificial intelligence will be defined and how neutrosophy has come to strengthen this discipline.

Special Subset Vertex Subgraphs For Social Networks, Florentin Smarandache, W. B. Vasantha Kandasamy, Ilanthenral K Jan 2018

Special Subset Vertex Subgraphs For Social Networks, Florentin Smarandache, W. B. Vasantha Kandasamy, Ilanthenral K

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book authors for the first time introduce the new notion of special subset vertex subgraph of subset vertex graphs introduced recently in [46]. These subset vertex graphs takes the vertex set values from the power set P(X) of any set X. The main speciality of these subset vertex graphs is that once a set of subsets from P(X) is given, the edges of the graph are fixed in a unique way, so for a given collection of subset vertices the graph is always unique [46]. The special subset vertex subgraphs of G are the ones, which have the …

Fuzzy And Neutrosophic Sets In Semigroups, Florentin Smarandache, Young Bae Jun, Madad Khan Jan 2018

Fuzzy And Neutrosophic Sets In Semigroups, Florentin Smarandache, Young Bae Jun, Madad Khan

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The first chapter, Characterizations of regular and duo semigroups based on int-soft set theory, investigates the relations among int-soft semigroup, int-soft (generalized) bi-ideal, int-soft quasi-ideal and int-soft interior ideal. Using int-soft left (right) ideal, an int-soft quasi-ideal is constructed. We show that every int-soft quasi-ideal can be represented as the soft intersection of an int-soft left ideal and an int-soft right ideal. Using int-soft quasiideal, an int-soft bi-ideal is established. Conditions for a semigroup to be regular are displayed.

Copula Theory And Regression Analysis, Mayooran Thevaraja Jan 2018

Copula Theory And Regression Analysis, Mayooran Thevaraja

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Researchers are often interested to study in the relationships between one variable and several other variables. Regression analysis is the statistical method for investigating such relationship and it is one of the most commonly used statistical Methods in many scientific fields such as financial data analysis, medicine, biology, agriculture, economics, engineering, sociology, geology, etc. But basic form of the regression analysis, ordinary least squares is not suitable for actuarial applications because the relationships are often nonlinear and the probability distribution of the response variable may be non-Gaussian distribution. One of the method that has been successful in overcoming these challenges …

Money Matters: An Analysis Of Campaign Finance In United States House Of Representatives Elections, 2010-2016, Destiny Leitz Jan 2018

Money Matters: An Analysis Of Campaign Finance In United States House Of Representatives Elections, 2010-2016, Destiny Leitz

Honors Program Theses

Money in politics is the single largest threat to the democratic system in the United States. It influences everything in politics, from the candidates to the issues debated. Every American knows that running for office requires large amounts of funding, and being elected requires even more. People worry that only the wealthiest voices are being heard; of course, candidates who depend on money from wealthy donors for campaign strength would never support unfavorable policies for their donors. Clearly, money in politics threatens the core democratic principles upon which America was founded. However, few people discuss whether the money really makes …

Numerical Simulation For A Rising Bubble Interacting With A Solid Wall: Impact, Bounce, And Thin Film Dynamics, Changjuan Zhang, Jie Li, Li-Shi Luo, Tiezheng Qian Jan 2018

Numerical Simulation For A Rising Bubble Interacting With A Solid Wall: Impact, Bounce, And Thin Film Dynamics, Changjuan Zhang, Jie Li, Li-Shi Luo, Tiezheng Qian

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Using an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian method on an adaptive moving unstructured mesh, we carry out numerical simulations for a rising bubble interacting with a solid wall. Driven by the buoyancy force, the axisymmetric bubble rises in a viscous liquid toward a horizontal wall, with impact on and possible bounce from the wall. First, our simulation is quantitatively validated through a detailed comparison between numerical results and experimental data. We then investigate the bubble dynamics which exhibits four different behaviors depending on the competition among the inertial, viscous, gravitational, and capillary forces. A phase diagram for bubble dynamics has been produced using …

Mental Models And Neutrosophic Cognitive Maps (Modelos Mentales Y Mapas Cognitivos Neutrosóficos), Maykel Leyva-Vazquez, Rebeca Escobar-Jara, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this work, elements related to mental models elicitation and analysis are addressed through causal models. Issues related to the need to include indeterminacy in causal relationships through neutrophic cognitive maps are discussed. A proposal for static analysis in neutrosophic cognitive maps is presented. The following activities are included in the proposal: Calculate, measures of centrality, Classify nodes, De-neutrosification, and Ranking nodes. As future works, the incorporation of new metrics of centrality in neutrosophic cognitive maps is proposed. The inclusion of scenario analysis to the proposal is another area of future work.

Generating Species Assemblages For Restoration And Experimentation: A New Method That Can Simultaneously Converge On Average Trait Values And Maximize Functional Diversity, David C. Laughlin, Loïc Chalmandrier, Chaitanya Joshi, Michael Renton, John M. Dwyer, Jennifer L. Funk

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

1.Restoring resilient ecosystems in an era of rapid environmental change requires a flexible framework for selecting assemblages of species based on functional traits. However, current trait‐based models have been limited to algorithms that select species assemblages that only converge on specified average trait values, and could not accommodate the common desire among restoration ecologists to generate functionally diverse assemblages.

2.We have solved this problem by applying a nonlinear optimization algorithm to solve for the species relative abundances that maximize Rao's quadratic entropy (Q) subject to other linear constraints. Rao's Q is a closed‐form algebraic expression of functional diversity …

Boundization, Closure And Convergence For The Ultra Extended Complex Banach And Hilbert Spaces With Applications, Salah Hamad Jan 2018

Boundization, Closure And Convergence For The Ultra Extended Complex Banach And Hilbert Spaces With Applications, Salah Hamad

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

We study Boundization, Closure and Convergence of Complex Banach and Hilbert spaces. We augment a Banach space with elements “infinity” and turn the augmented set into a metric space by appropriate distance functions. This new metric space is called the Ultra Extended Banach Space. A new family of bijections, motivated by nonlinear projections, take an Ultra Extended Banach Space into bounded subsets of a “larger” Banach space. We compare the family of new metrics induced and show which ones are equivalent and which ones are unexpectedly not equivalent. Some applications are provided.

Models For High Dimensional Spatially Correlated Risks And Application To Thunderstorm Loss Data In Texas, Tobias Merk Jan 2018

Models For High Dimensional Spatially Correlated Risks And Application To Thunderstorm Loss Data In Texas, Tobias Merk

Masters Theses

"Insurance claims caused by natural disasters exhibit spatial dependence with the strength of dependence being based on factors such as physical distance and population density, to name a few. Accounting for spatial dependence is therefore of crucial importance when modeling these types of claims. In this work, we present an approach to assess spatially dependent insurance risks using a combination of linear regression and factor copula models. Specifically, in loss modeling, observed dependence patterns are highly nonlinear, thus copula-based models seem appropriate since they can handle both linear and nonlinear dependence. The factor copula approach for estimating the spatial dependence …

An Investigation Of The Influence Of The 2007-2009 Recession On The Day Of The Week Effect For The S&P 500 And Its Sectors, Marcel Alwin Trick Jan 2018

An Investigation Of The Influence Of The 2007-2009 Recession On The Day Of The Week Effect For The S&P 500 And Its Sectors, Marcel Alwin Trick

Masters Theses

"Several studies have shown that the mean returns and the volatility structure of stock markets change seasonally or by day of the week. For instance, some authors found out that Monday returns are lower compared to Friday returns or that volatility on Wednesdays are lower compared to the rest of the week. Other researchers showed that these effects have changed after certain periods of economic stress. This led to the question, whether the day of the week effects in returns and volatility are in the US stock market and if patterns have changed from pre-recession through the 2007-2009 recession into …

On Modeling Quantities For Insurer Solvency Against Catastrophe Under Some Markovian Assumptions, Daniel Jefferson Geiger Jan 2018

On Modeling Quantities For Insurer Solvency Against Catastrophe Under Some Markovian Assumptions, Daniel Jefferson Geiger

Doctoral Dissertations

"Insurance companies sometimes face catastrophic losses, yet they must remain solvent enough to meet the legal obligation of covering all claims. Catastrophes can result in large damages to the policyholders, causing the arrival of numerous claims to insurance companies at once. Furthermore, the severity of an event could impact the time until the next occurrence. An insurer needs certain levels of startup capital to meet all claims, and then must have adequate reserves on a continual basis, even more so when catastrophes occur. This work examines two facets of these matters: for an infinite time horizon, we extend and develop …

Nonlinear Coupled Effects In Nanomaterials, Sia Bhowmick Jan 2018

Nonlinear Coupled Effects In Nanomaterials, Sia Bhowmick

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Materials at the nanoscale have different chemical, structural, and optoelectrical properties compared to their bulk counterparts. As a result, such materials, called nanomaterials, exhibit observable differences in certain physical phenomena. One such resulting phenomenon called the piezoelectric effect has played a crucial role in miniature self-powering electronic devices called nanogenerators which are fabricated by using nanostructures, such as nanowires, nanorods, and nanofilms. These devices are capable of harvesting electrical energy by inducing mechanical strain on the individual nanostructures. Electrical energy created in this manner does not have environmental limitations. In this thesis, important coupled effects, such as the nonlinear piezoelectric …

Investigation Of Volatile Organic Compounds (Vocs) Detected At Vapor Intrusion Sites, Mohammadyousef Roghani Jan 2018

Investigation Of Volatile Organic Compounds (Vocs) Detected At Vapor Intrusion Sites, Mohammadyousef Roghani

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

This dissertation investigates unexplained vapor intrusion field data sets that have been observed at hazardous waste sites, including: 1) non-linear soil gas concentration trends between the VOC source (i.e. contaminated groundwater plume) and the ground surface; and, 2) alternative pathways that serve as entry points for vapors to infiltrate into buildings and serve to increase VOC exposure risks as compared to the classic vapor intrusion model, which primarily considered foundation cracks as the route for vapor entry. The overall hypothesis of this research is that theoretical knowledge of fate and transport processes can be systematically applied to vapor intrusion field …

Switching Diffusion Systems With Past-Dependent Switching Having A Countable State Space, Hai Dang Nguyen Jan 2018

Switching Diffusion Systems With Past-Dependent Switching Having A Countable State Space, Hai Dang Nguyen

Wayne State University Dissertations

Emerging and existing applications in wireless communications, queueing networks, biological models, financial engineering, and social networks demand the

mathematical modeling and analysis of hybrid models in which continuous dynamics and discrete events coexist.

Assuming that the systems are in continuous times,

stemming from stochastic-differential-equation-based models and random discrete events,

switching diffusions come into being. In such systems, continuous states and discrete events

(discrete states)

coexist and interact.

A switching diffusion is a two-component process $(X(t),\alpha(t))$, a continuous component and a discrete component taking values in a discrete set (a set consisting of isolated points).

When the discrete component takes a …

Supersymmetry And The Math Of Adinkras, Ari Putt Spiesberger Jan 2018

Supersymmetry And The Math Of Adinkras, Ari Putt Spiesberger

Senior Projects Fall 2018

The purpose of this paper is to expand the dictionary of values related to parameterized supersymmetry values. These values, represented by Adinkras, are some of the most fascinating explanations of theoretical supersymmetry that exist. My goal was to approach and define an equivalence class on a specific value that had yet to be defined. I was able to do this, and in doing so, present information on a larger equivalence class in the field surrounding Adinkras.

The Use Of Item Response Theory In Survey Methodology: Application In Seat Belt Data, Mark K. Ledbetter, Norou Diawara, Bryan E. Porter

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Problem: Several approaches to analyze survey data have been proposed in the literature. One method that is not popular in survey research methodology is the use of item response theory (IRT). Since accurate methods to make prediction behaviors are based upon observed data, the design model must overcome computation challenges, but also consideration towards calibration and proficiency estimation. The IRT model deems to be offered those latter options. We review that model and apply it to an observational survey data. We then compare the findings with the more popular weighted logistic regression. Method: Apply IRT model to the observed data …

The Mechanics And Thermodynamics Of Amyloid Beta Protein Aggregation In Competing Pathways, Edward Steen Jan 2018

The Mechanics And Thermodynamics Of Amyloid Beta Protein Aggregation In Competing Pathways, Edward Steen

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The primary purpose of this paper is to investigate the mechanics of Aβ protein aggregation within the brain through mathematical modeling and simulation. Aggregation of Aβ is the cause of plaques within the brain of Alzheimer’s Disease sufferers. Because the pathways of aggregation from monomer to oligomer to polymer are numerous and complex, we have had to simplify our model to a limited number of species. Of great concern, too, is the process by which Aβ can form as “off-pathway” species, which is when Aβ reacts with fatty acid micelles. It is this species of Aβ, which due to its …
