Statistical Cataloging Of Archival Data For Luminosity Class Iv-V Stars, B. J. Taylor

This paper is one of a pair in which temperatures and metallicity catalogs for class IV-V stars are considered. The temperature catalog described here is derived from a calibration based on stellar angular diameters. If published calibrations of this kind are compared by using color-index transformations, temperature-dependent differences among the calibrations are commonly found. However, such differences are minimized if attention is restricted to calibrations based on Johnson V-K. A calibration of this sort from Di Benedetto (1998) is therefore tested and adopted. That calibration is then applied to spectroscopic and photometric data, with the latter predominating. Cousins R-I photometry …

Statistical Cataloging Of Archival Data For Luminosity Class Iv-V Stars - Ii. The Epoch 2001 [Fe/H] Catalog, B. J. Taylor

This paper describes the derivation of an updated statistical catalog of metallicities. The stars for which those metallicities apply are of spectral types F, G, and K, and are on or near the main sequence. The input data for the catalog are values of [Fe/H] published before 2002 February and derived from lines of weak and moderate strength. The analyses used to derive the data have been based on one-dimensional LTE model atmospheres. Initial adjustments which are applied to the data include corrections to a uniform temperature scale which is given in a companion paper (see Taylor 2003). After correction, …

Horizontal-Branch Morphology And The Photometric Evolution Of Old Stellar Populations, Hyun Chul Lee, Young Wook Lee, Brad K. Gibson

Theoretical integrated broadband colors ranging from far-UV to near-IR have been computed for old stellar systems from our evolutionary population synthesis code. These models take into account, for the first time, the detailed systematic variation of horizontal-branch (HB) morphology with age and metallicity. Our models show that some temperature-sensitive color indices are significantly affected by the presence of blue HB stars. In particular, B-V does not become monotonically redder as metallicity increases at given ages, but becomes bluer by as much as ∼0.15 mag because of the contribution from blue HB stars. We discuss the flux and polarization signals obtained from the microlensing of stars with extended circumstellar envelopes by a single point-mass lens. A previous paper considered the case of main-sequence stars, and showed that microlensing of the stellar photosphere could produce a small net polarization (up to 0.1 per cent). In this paper, we show that stars with extensive envelopes will show a much higher level of variable polarization (up to 10 per cent), even if they are spherically symmetric. Since the stellar envelopes most likely to be lensed are produced by red giant winds, we also investigate the effects …

Perpendicular Transport Of Charged Particles In Composite Model Turbulence: Recovery Of Diffusion, Gang Qin, William H. Matthaeus, John William Bieber

The computation of charged particle orbits in model turbulent magnetic fields is used to investigate the properties of particle transport in the directions perpendicular to the large-scale magnetic field. Recent results by Qin, Matthaeus, & Bieber demonstrate that parallel scattering suppresses perpendicular diffusion to a subdiffusive level when the turbulence lacks transverse structure. Here numerical computations are used to show that in turbulence in which there is substantial transverse structure, a second regime of diffusive transport can be established. In both the subdiffusion regime and this "second diffusion" regime, perpendicular transport is intrinsically nonlinear. The regime of second diffusion persists …

Observations of OH are a useful proxy of the water production rate (Q H2O) and outflow velocity (VH2O) in comets. From wide-field images taken on 1997 March 28 and April 8 that capture the entire scale length of the OH coma of comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp), we obtain Q OH from the model-independent method of aperture summation and Q H2O from the OH photochemical branching ratio, BROH. Using an adaptive ring summation algorithm, we extract the radial brightness distribution of OH 0-0 band emission out to cometocentric distances of up to 10 to the sixth power km, both as azimuthal …

Of the “presolar particles” extracted from carbonaceous meteorite dissolution residues, i.e., of those particles that show isotopic evidence of formation in the neighborhood of other stars prior to the origin of our solar system, a subset of the onion-like graphite spheres has an interesting concentric graphene core–graphite rim structure. We show here that single graphene sheet defects in the onion cores (e.g., cyclopentane loops) may be observable edge-on by high-resolution electron microscopy. This could allow a better evaluation of models for their formation and in particular could strengthen the possibility that growth of these assemblages proceeds atom by atom with …

Characteristics of the astrophysical important Stark broadened 447.15 nm, 587.56 nm and 667.82 nm spectral line profiles have been measured at electron densities between 0.3 10 and 8.2 10 m and electron temperatures between 8000 and 33 000 K in plasmas created in five various discharge conditions using a linear, low-pressure, pulsed arc as an optically thin plasma source operated in a helium-nitrogen-oxygen gas mixture. We investigate a class of models for dark matter and/or negative-pressure, dynamical dark energy consisting of “spintessence”, a complex scalar field φ spinning in a U(1)-symmetric potential V(φ)=V(|φ|). As the Universe expands, the field spirals slowly toward the origin. The internal angular momentum plays an important role in the cosmic evolution and fluctuation dynamics. We outline the constraints on a cosmic spintessence field, describing the properties of the potential necessary to sustain a viable dark energy model, making connections with quintessence and self-interacting and fuzzy cold dark matter. The Chandra spectrum of delta Ori A shows emission lines from hydrogen- and helium-like states of Si, Mg, Ne, and O, along with N VII Lyalpha and lines from ions in the range Fe XVII-Fe XXI In contrast to the broad lines seen in zeta Pup and zeta Ori (850 +/- 40 and 1000 +/- 240 km s(-1) half-width at half-maximum [HWHM], respectively), these lines are broadened to only 430 +/- 60 km s(-1) HWHM. This is much lower than the measured wind terminal velocity of 2000 km s(-1). The forbidden, intercombination, and resonance (fir) lines from He-like ions indicate …

A compact focusing crystal spectrometer based on the von Hamos scheme is described. Cylindrically curved mica and graphite crystals with a radius of curvature of R = 20 mm are used in the spectrometer. A front illuminated charge-coupled device (CCD) linear array detector makes this spectrometer useful for real-time spectroscopy of laser-produced plasma x-ray sources within the wavelength range of lambda= 1.8-10 Angstroms. Calibration of crystals and the CCD linear array makes it possible to measure absolute photon fluxes. X-ray spectra in an absolute intensity scale were obtained from Mg, Ti, and Fe laser-produced plasmas, with a spectral resolution lambda/delta …

Spatially resolved ROSAT X-ray and ground-based optical data for the southwestern region of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant (SNR) reveal in unprecedented detail the very early stages of a blast-wave interaction with an isolated interstellar cloud. Numerous internal cloud shock fronts near the upstream flow and along the cloud edges are visible optically as sharp filaments of enhanced H emission. Faint X-ray emission is seen along a line of Balmer-dominated shock filaments north and south of the cloud with an estimated X-ray gas temperature of 1.2 106 K (0.11 keV), corresponding to a shock velocity of 290 km s1 . …

The existence of carbon in cool He white dwarf (WD) atmospheres has been known for a relatively long time[5]. The presence of carbon in these atmospheres is explained by convective dredge up of interior carbon [6]. Pelletier et al. (1986) presented the first detailed calculations of this process and showed that carbon diffuses upwards from the core into the base of the He-rich envelope where it can be dredged up by a surface convection zone. As the temperature of the star decreases, more carbon diffuses upward, and the base of convection zone moves deeper into the star, further enriching the …

The chronology of star formation is recorded in the white dwarf luminosity function (WDLF). White dwarf (WD) structure implies a relatively simple connection between WD luminosity and age. First attempts to exploit WDs as chronometers [3,4,6] showed that the WDLF was a map of the history of star formation in the disk, and a significant shortfall of low-luminosity degenerates–the inevitable consequence of the finite age of the disk. The shortfall near log(L/L⊙)≈−4.5 implies a disk age of 6.5–9.5 Gyr [2]. The WDLF from wide common proper motion binaries [5] does not show the shortfall seen by Liebert et al. (1988). …

We present minor axis, offset major axis and one diagonal long slit spectra for 10 E and S0 galaxies of the Coma cluster drawn from a magnitude-limited sample studied before. We derive rotation curves, velocity dispersion profiles and the H3 and H4 coefficients of the Hermite decomposition of the line of sight velocity distribution. Moreover, we derive the line index profiles of Mg, Fe and Hβ line indices and assess their errors. The data will be used to construct dynamical models of the galaxies and study their stellar populations.

We present high‐resolution spectroscopy and precision photometry of six new γ Doradus stars, one of which was independently discovered by another group. This brings the total number of confirmed γ Doradus variables to 30. All six of these variables fall in the spectral class range F0–F2; all but one are subgiants. The six stars have between one and five photometric periods in the range 0.3–1.2 days. We find no evidence for higher frequency δ Scuti pulsations in any of these six stars. We present deep BVI observations of the core of M35 and a nearby comparison field obtained at the WIYN 3.5 m telescope under excellent seeing conditions. These observations probe to V > 26 and display the lower main sequence in BV and VI CMDs down to V = 23.3 and 24.6, respectively. At these faint magnitudes the background Galactic field stars are far more numerous than the cluster stars, yet by using a smoothing technique and CMD density distribution subtraction we are able to recover the cluster fiducial main sequence and luminosity function to V = 24.6. Using a redshift survey of 1323 galaxies (1092 new or remeasured) in a region of 95 deg2 centered on the nearby galaxy cluster Abell 2199, we analyze the supercluster containing A2199, A2197, and an X-ray group. The caustic technique accurately reproduces the true mass profiles of simulated simple superclusters (i.e., superclusters for which the virial mass of one cluster is 2–10 times the virial mass of all other clusters in the supercluster). We calculate the masses of the two main components of A2197 (A2197W and A2197E) by using archival X-ray observations and demonstrate that the A2199 supercluster is simple (the …

We present new high-precision Strömgren photometry and Ca II H and K spectrophotometry of HD 192263. Based on radial velocity variations detected previously by two groups, this K2 V star was thought to host a 0.75 MJup (minimum mass) planetary companion in a 24 day orbit. Our photometric observations reveal periodic variations that match the purported planetary orbital period, while the Ca II H and K emission fluxes are modulated on half the planetary period. This suggests that rotational modulation of the visibility of stellar surface activity is the source of the observed radial velocity variations. Therefore, HD 192263 should …

We present new Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/WFPC2 imagery and STIS long-slit spectroscopy of the planetary nebula NGC 7009. The primary goal was to obtain high spatial resolution of the intrinsic line ratio [O III] 4364/5008 and thereby evaluate the electron temperature (Te) and the fractional mean-square Te variation (tA2)across the nebula. The WFPC2 Temap is rather uniform; almost all values are between 9000–11 000 K, with the higher Te values closely coinciding with the inner He++ zone. Near-infrared observations are presented for five Type IIn supernovae (SN 1995N, SN 1997ab, SN 1998S, SN 1999Z, and SN 1999el) that exhibit strong infrared excesses at late times (t > 100 days). H- and K-band emission from these objects is dominated by a continuum that rises toward longer wavelengths. The data are interpreted as thermal emission from dust, probably situated in a preexisting circumstellar nebula. The IR luminosities implied by single-temperature blackbody fits are quite large, >1041-1042 ergs s-1, and the emission evolves slowly, lasting for years after maximum light. The classical B0.5e star γ Cassiopeia is known to be a unique X-ray source by virtue of its moderate LX (1033 ergs s-1), hard X-ray spectrum, and light curve punctuated by ubiquitous flares and slow undulations. The peculiarities of this star have led to a controversy concerning the origin of these emissions: whether they are from wind infall onto a putative degenerate companion, as in the case of normal Be/X-ray binaries, or from the Be star itself. The detection of spectral variability of the γ-ray blazar Mrk 421 at TeV energies is reported. Observations with the Whipple Observatory 10 m γ-ray telescope taken in 2000/2001 revealed exceptionally strong and long-lasting flaring activity. Flaring levels of 0.4-13 times that of the Crab Nebula flux provided sufficient statistics for a detailed study of the energy spectrum between 380 GeV and 8.2 TeV as a function of the flux level. These spectra are well described by a power law with an exponential cutoff: dN/dE ∝ E-αeimg1.gif m-2 s-1 TeV-1. There is no evidence for variation in the cutoff energy with …

Stellar spectroscopic classification has been successfully automated by a number of groups. Automated classification and parameterization work best when applied to a homogeneous data set, and thus these techniques primarily have been developed for and applied to large surveys. While most ongoing large spectroscopic surveys target extragalactic objects, many stellar spectra have been and will be obtained. We briefly summarize past work on automated classification and parameterization, with emphasis on the work done in our group. Using advanced instrumentation on the ACE spacecraft, we have conducted a survey of solar energetic particle spectra in ³He-rich events over a broad energy range ∼80 keV nucleon-1 to 15 MeV nucleonˉ¹ during the period 1997 September-2001 March. The spectra of ⁴He and heavy ions (C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ca, Fe) were generally similar over this range but often hardened below ∼1 MeV nucleonˉ¹. In most of the events there was even stronger hardening of the ³He spectrum below ∼1 MeV nucleonˉ¹, leading to an energy-dependent ³He: ⁴He ratio. We have obtained spectroscopy and photometry of the chromospherically active, single-lined spectroscopic binaries HD 89546 and HD 113816. HD 89546 has a circular orbit with a period of 21.3596 days. Its primary has a spectral type of G9 III and is somewhat metal-poor with [Fe/H]~-0.5. HD 113816 has an orbit with a period of 23.6546 and a low eccentricity of 0.022. Its mass function is extremely small, 0.0007 Msolar, consistent with a very low inclination. The primary is a slightly metal-poor K2 III. Wide Binary Systems And The Nature Of High-Velocity White Dwarfs, Nicole M. Silvestri, Terry D. Oswalt, Suzanne L. Hawley

We present measured radial velocities and complete space motions for 116 white dwarf stars with M dwarf companions. Thirteen pairs have " halo-like " velocities. According to a recent study by Oppenheimer et al., all these high-velocity white dwarfs should be considered part of the dark matter heavy halo of the Galaxy, based on their kinematics. Based on the near-solar abundance levels of the M dwarf companions, we conclude that 12 of our 13 high-velocity white dwarfs are actually part of the high-velocity tail of the thick disk, rather than the dark matter halo of the Galaxy, in agreement with …
