The Thermal Degradation Of Bisphenol A Polycarbonate In Air, Bok Nam Jang, Charles A. Wilkie Jan 2005

The Thermal Degradation Of Bisphenol A Polycarbonate In Air, Bok Nam Jang, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The thermal degradation of polycarbonate in air was studied as a function of mass loss using TGA/FTIR, GC/MS and LC/MS. In the main degradation region, 480–560 °C, the assigned structures of smaller molecules and linear molecules that evolved in air were very similar to those obtained from the degradation in nitrogen; the degradation of polycarbonate follows chain scission of the isopropylidene linkage, in agreement with the bond dissociation energies, and hydrolysis/alcoholysis of carbonate linkage. Compared to the degradation in nitrogen, some differences were observed primarily in the beginning stage of degradation. Oxygen may facilitate branching as well as radical formation …

Polystyrene Nanocomposites Based On Carbazole-Containing Surfactants, Grace Chigwada, David D. Jiang, Charles A. Wilkie Jan 2005

Polystyrene Nanocomposites Based On Carbazole-Containing Surfactants, Grace Chigwada, David D. Jiang, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

New organically-modified clays containing a carbazole unit were prepared and the number of long alkyl chains on the surfactant was varied. The clay was used to prepare polystyrene nanocomposites by both bulk polymerization and melt blending. The dispersion of these clays in the polymer matrix was evaluated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The thermal stability of the clays and the nanocomposites were analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) while the fire properties were evaluated by cone calorimetry. If more than two alkyl chains were present, the gallery spacing is apparently overcrowded, leading to poor dispersion. Bulk polymerization …

The Relationship Between The Solubility Parameter Of Polymers And The Clay-Dispersion In Polymer/Clay Nanocomposites And The Role Of The Surfactant, Bok Nam Jang, Dongyan Wang, Charles A. Wilkie Jan 2005

The Relationship Between The Solubility Parameter Of Polymers And The Clay-Dispersion In Polymer/Clay Nanocomposites And The Role Of The Surfactant, Bok Nam Jang, Dongyan Wang, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Nanocomposites were prepared of polymers having different solubility parameters and pristine or organically modified clays, and the dispersion of clay in the polymer was evaluated using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The solubility parameters of both the polymers and surfactants of interest were calculated according to the group contribution method and correlated with the clay morphology. A close relationship between the solubility parameter of the polymer and the clay morphology was observed. The clay has a very polar group, so the higher is the solubility parameter of the polymer, the larger is the d spacing of the clay that …

Isolation, X-Ray Structures, And Electronic Spectra Of Reactive Intermediates In Friedel−Crafts Acylations, M. G. Davlieva, Sergey V. Lindeman, I. S. Neretin, Jay K. Kochi Jan 2005

Isolation, X-Ray Structures, And Electronic Spectra Of Reactive Intermediates In Friedel−Crafts Acylations, M. G. Davlieva, Sergey V. Lindeman, I. S. Neretin, Jay K. Kochi

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Reactive intermediates in the Friedel−Crafts acylation of aromatic donors are scrutinized upon their successful isolation and X-ray crystallography at very low temperatures. Detailed analyses of the X-ray parameters for the [1:1] complexes of different aliphatic and aromatic-acid chlorides with the Lewis acids antimony pentafluoride and pentachloride, gallium trichloride, titanium and zirconium tetrachlorides provide unexpected insight into the activation mechanism for the formation of the critical acylium carbocations. Likewise, the X-ray-structure examinations of aliphatic and aromatic acylium electrophiles also isolated as crystalline salts point to the origins of their electrophilic reactivity. Although the Wheland intermediates (as acylium adducts to arene donors) …

Effect Of Humic Substance Photodegradation On Bacterial Growth And Respiration In Lake Water, Alexandre M. Anesio, William Granéli, George R. Aiken, David J. Kieber, Kenneth Mopper

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

This study addresses how humic substance (HS) chemical composition and photoreactivity affect bacterial growth, respiration, and growth efficiency (BGE) in lake water. Aqueous solutions of HSs from diverse aquatic environments representing different dissolved organic matter sources (autochthonous and allochthonous) were exposed to artificial solar UV radiation. These solutions were added to lake water passed through a 0.7-μm pore-size filter (containing grazer-free lake bacteria) followed by dark incubation for 5, 43, and 65 h. For the 5-h incubation, several irradiated HSs inhibited bacterial carbon production (BCP) and this inhibition was highly correlated with H2O2 photoproduction. The H2 …

Synthesis Of Gold Nanoparticles Attached To Polypyrrole Nanofibers, Sunil K. Pillalamarri, Frank D. Blum, Massimo F. Bertino

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Polypyrrole is a frequently studied conducting polymer due to its application in sensing and catalysis.1 Polypyrrole is considered among the most promising conductive polymers due to its stability and ease of conversion between conducting and insulating forms.2 Different chemical and electrochemical methods are generally used in the synthesis of polypyrrole.2 Despite many interesting applications, the use of polypyrrole is limited because of difficulty in processing it. Several approaches have been explored to improve the ability to process polypyrrole, including the use of emulsion, inverse emulsion, steric stabilizer, and microemulsion methods.1 Several reports have also been published on the synthesis of …

Ultra-thin polymer films attached to solid substrates (supported films) have attracted significant interest in recent years. Supported films are used in the design of advanced materials like photoresists, lubricants and other electronic devices. Glass transition temperatures (Tgs) of supported polymer films have also been of significant interest. The Tg has been shown to depend on the thickness of the polymer film on the surface and the inherent nature of the surface. The effect of end-grafting of a polymer chain to a surface, on the Tg of the polymer has been studied previously.1 Reports on the study of glass transition behaviors …

Effect Of Phosphoric Acid Anion Structure On The Corrosion Inhibition Of Steel By Polyaniline, Yasir Idlibi, Thomas P. Schuman, James O. Stoffer Jan 2005

Effect Of Phosphoric Acid Anion Structure On The Corrosion Inhibition Of Steel By Polyaniline, Yasir Idlibi, Thomas P. Schuman, James O. Stoffer

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Conductive polymers such as polyaniline (PAni) have been examined as candidates for replacing the existing chromate systems. Protonation of emeraldine base creates polarons and bipolarons, single and paired radical cations, respectively, of higher bond energy levels within the molecular orbital band gap.' For a conductive coating, considerable delocalization of corrosion charge and potential may be obtained along or between the polymer chains, because of high electron mobility. Current corrosion systems based on polyaniline typically rely on sulfuric or sulfonic acids as a dopant material, since synthetic techniques utilize persulfates as the oxidant of choice. In our experience, sulfonic/sulfuric acid systems …

Fourier Transform Infrared Analysis Of Hydroxyl Content Of Hydrothermally Processed Heteroepitaxial Barium Titanate Films, Sandeep K. Patil, Nipun Shah, Frank D. Blum, M. N. Rahaman

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The concentration of hydroxyl (-OH) groups in epitaxial barium titanate (BaTiO3) films (thickness ≈ 200 nm), deposited on single-crystal strontium titanate (SrTiO3) at 150 °C by a hydrothermal technique, was investigated using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. After hydrothermal treatment, a broad FTIR resonance for the hydroxyl groups indicated a significant concentration of surface -OH groups in the films. The as-deposited films were subsequently treated hydrothermally with D2O, and the kinetics of the exchange reaction between -OH incorporated into the film and -OD from the D2O were studied using FTIR. For reactions carried out intermittently, the …

Deuterium Nmr Studies Of Segmental Dynamics Of Anopore-Adsorbed Poly(Methyl Acrylate), Macduff O. Okuom, Frank D. Blum Jan 2005

Deuterium Nmr Studies Of Segmental Dynamics Of Anopore-Adsorbed Poly(Methyl Acrylate), Macduff O. Okuom, Frank D. Blum

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Studies of segmental dynamics of polymers at interfaces provide a basis for understanding the properties of composite materials. Interfacial phenomena in multi-phase systems need to be understood as devices made from multi-phase polymeric systems become smaller. Various techniques have been used to investigate interfacial polymers at the air-polymer-solid interface; for example, ellipsometry,1 X-ray,2 and neutron reflectometry.3 These techniques typically characterize the structure (often the thickness) of the polymer layer and are normally used to determine the glass-transition temperature (Tg) through a break in the thicknesstemperature curve. There have been a few reports where the dynamics of polymers at the surface-air …

Magnetic Properties Of (Γ-Fe₂O₃)₈₀Ag₂₀ Nanocomposites Prepared In Reverse Micelles, Joan A. Wiemann, Jianbiao Dai, Jinke Tang, Gary J. Long, Leonard Spinu

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The magnetic properties of nanoparticles of gamma-Fe2O3 prepared by reverse micelles have been studied by dc magnetization, transverse ac susceptibility, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The nanoparticles of gamma-Fe2O3 in the nanocomposite (gamma-Fe2O3)80Ag20 exhibit superparamagnetic behavior. The blocking temperatures determined by the three methods indicate the superparamagnetic nature of (gamma-Fe2O3)80Ag20 above 70-80 K and show correlation with measuring time. The average particle diameter obtained by transmission electron microscopy of the gamma-Fe2O3 particles is ~10 nm and that of the Ag particles is ~20 nm. The average particle size determined from the magnetic analyses for the gamma-Fe2O3 particles is ~12 nm. Mössbauer spectra …

Nmr And Modulated Differential Scanning Calorimetry Of Adsorbed Poly(Methyl Acrylate) On Silica, Frank D. Blum, Burak Metin

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The interaction between polymers and solid substrates can be studied by a variety of techniques. The results from different experiments can be affected by the nature of the polymer, surface, polymer-surface interactions and, also, the experiment. A great deal has been learned about the behavior of polymers at interfaces, but there is also much to be learned about the interactions and how they affect the physical properties of adsorbed polymers. In the present study, we report both deuterium nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC) of poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA) adsorbed on Cab-O-Sil silica. The focus of this …

Segmental Dynamics In Poly(Methyl Acrylate)-D3 On Strongly And Weakly Adsorbing Silica Surfaces, Burak Metin, Frank D. Blum Jan 2005

Segmental Dynamics In Poly(Methyl Acrylate)-D3 On Strongly And Weakly Adsorbing Silica Surfaces, Burak Metin, Frank D. Blum

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The segmental dynamics of a polymer on a solid surface appears to be significantly different than that in bulk. The strength of the interaction between polymer segments and a solid surface is likely to be an important factor affecting the segmental mobility of the polymers. Studies of polymers on a weakly adsorbing surface would provide additional understanding of their motional characteristics on surfaces. In a recent NMR study by Rivillon et al., chain dynamics was seen to be different for samples, even when there was no specific interaction with the surface. Peanasky et al. have found a restricted segmental dynamics …

Synthesis And Electropolymerization Of 2-(3-Thienylethyl)-3-Thiopheneacetate, Nicholas Leventis, Chariklia Sotiriou-Leventis, Sudhir Mulik, Amala Dass

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Conducting polymers offer great promise in the development of electronic devices, displays and sensors. In that regard, biomolecules can be attached to these polymers via functional groups, but the presence of such groups oftentimes hinders polymerization.1-3 One strategy is to polymerize a functionalized monomer precursor of a conducting polymer, followed by reaction of the dangling functional groups of the polymer with appropriately functionalized labels. An attractive functionalized thiophene for that purpose is 3-thienylethanol. Unfortunately, however, this monomer is not polymerizable.1,2 Thus, 3-thienylethanol has been esterified, followed by co-polymerization with 3-methylthiophene (3-MT), and subsequent hydrolysis of the ester to the free …

Environment Friendly Organic Synthesis Using Bismuth Compounds. An Efficient Method For Carbonyl-Ene Reactions Catalyzed By Bismuth Triflate, Ram Mohan, Erin Anderson, Justin Ernat, Mai Nguyen, Ann Palma Jan 2005

Environment Friendly Organic Synthesis Using Bismuth Compounds. An Efficient Method For Carbonyl-Ene Reactions Catalyzed By Bismuth Triflate, Ram Mohan, Erin Anderson, Justin Ernat, Mai Nguyen, Ann Palma

Scholarship

Bismuth triflate (0.1 mol %) is a highly efficient catalyst for the cyclization of citronellal 1, a reaction that yields a ratio of 80:20 of isopulegol 2 and neoisopulegol 3. This methodology has also been extended to the synthesis of substituted piperidines. The bismuth triflate catalyzed ene reaction of aldehyde 4 gives a 70:30 mixture of piperidines 5 and 6. The advantages of these methods include the use of a highly efficient catalyst that is relatively nontoxic, cheap and easy to handle.

A Study Of Epoxyolefin Cyclizations Catalyzed By Bismuth Trifluoromethanesulfonate And Other Metal Triflates, Ram Mohan, Joshua Lacey, Peter Anzalone, Christopher Duncan, Matthew Hackert

Scholarship

Epoxyolefin cyclizations have attracted considerable interest due to their importance in biosynthetic pathways. Bismuth trifluoromethanesulfonate as well as several other metal triflates are shown to be highly effective (0.1 mol %) catalysts for the cyclization of geraniolene oxide. The product composition is found to be more dependent on solvent and substrate concentration than on the nature of the metal triflate. Cyclization products are favored in CH2Cl2 and under high dilution conditions. Ether solvents favored acyclic products.

Predicted Properties Of Microhollow Cathode Discharges In Xenon, J. P. Boeuf, L. C. Pitchford, K. H. Schoenbach

Bioelectrics Publications

A fluid model has been developed and used to help clarify the physical mechanisms occurring in microhollow cathode discharges (MHCD). Calculated current-voltage (I-V) characteristics and gas temperatures in xenon at 100 Torr are presented. Consistent with previous experimental results in similar conditions, we find a voltage maximum in the I-V characteristic. We show that this structure reflects a transition between a low-current, abnormal discharge localized inside the cylindrical hollow cathode to a higher-current, normal glow discharge sustained by electron emission from the outer surface of the cathode. This transition, due to the geometry of …

Simulations Of Nanopore Formation And Phosphatidylserine Externalization In Lipid Membranes Subjected To A High-Intensity, Ultrashort Electric Pulse, Q. Hu, R. P. Joshi, K. H. Schoenbach

Bioelectrics Publications

A combined MD simulator and time dependent Laplace solver are used to analyze the electrically driven phosphatidylserine externalization process in cells. Time dependent details of nanopore formation at cell membranes in response to a high-intensity (100kV∕cm), ultrashort (10ns) electric pulse are also probed. Our results show that nanosized pores could typically be formed within about 5ns. These predictions are in very good agreement with recent experimental data. It is also demonstrated that defect formation and PS externalization in membranes should begin on the anode side. Finally, the simulations confirm that PS externalization is a nanopore facilitated event, rather than the …

We have studied the charge disproportionation phenomenon in CaFeO3 using the local-spin density approximation with the on-site Coulomb interaction parameter U and exchange parameter J. The calculation reveals that the total number of the 3d electrons is about 5.1 for both Fe(1)(Fe5+) and Fe(2)(Fe3+) atoms, and that there are about 0.25 electron holes in the O-2p band. Therefore, the charge disproportionation can be more accurately described as 2d5L(Fe4+)=d5L2(Fe5+)+d5(Fe3+), where L denotes a hole in the oxygen 2p band, instead of 2d4(Fe4+)=d3(Fe5+)+d5(Fe3+). The hybridization between the Fe-3d and O-2p orbitals is stronger for Fe(1) than for Fe(2) due to the shorter …

This article is aimed at studying the temperature dependence oxygen nonstoichiometry, magnetic moments, Fe3+ fraction, Néel temperature and conductivity of (La,Sr)FeO3-δ. It is found that the magnetic properties in La0.60 Sr0.40 Fe3-δ is determined by Fe3+ and its concentration, and the conductance is resulted from Fe4+ ions, which act as electron holes. Both of magnetic and electrical properties were directly governed by oxygen nonstoichiometry (δ). when δ=0.2, the compound has maximum Fe3+, the saturation magnetic moments and Néel temperature are 3.8 µB and 410 °C, both at the highest level, …

Measurement Of Lipid Peroxidation In Biology Models Using Gas-Chromatography-Aass Spectrometry, Madhavi Lokireddy Jan 2005

Measurement Of Lipid Peroxidation In Biology Models Using Gas-Chromatography-Aass Spectrometry, Madhavi Lokireddy

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

C2C12 mouse myoblast cells, grown in glass vials, were connected to a cryofocusing unit to trap volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The VOCs were eluted from the trap by capacitive discharge into a gas chromatograph with time-of-flight mass spectral capabilities (GC-TOFMS) and were found to include the lipid peroxidation product hexanal. The pro-oxidant cumene hydroperoxide elevated the levels of these lipid peroxidation products, whereas the anti-oxidant butylated hydroxy toluene (BHT) impaired their production. Derivatization of the aldehyde products of lipid peroxidation in the same myoblast cells with pentafluorobenzyl hydroxylamine hydrochloride (PFB) provided evidence for formation of non-volatile products of lipid peroxidation …

Characterization Of Black Deposit Associated With Rock Paintings In Little Lost River Cave, Idaho Using Pyrolysis Gc, Sarah Therese Fezzey

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

A black, shiny coating overlies rock paintings in Little Lost River Cave no. 1, located in southeastern Idaho. If this coating is the result of human activity within the cave – a condensate from cooking fires, for example – then a radiocarbon date on the coating would provide a minimum age for the underlying paintings. The work reported here was undertaken to test the assumption that the coating has an anthropomorphic origin. Using pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (py-GC-MS) and thermally-assisted hydrolysis/methylation-GC-MS, we have compared samples of the black coating from Idaho to humic acid, a geologic material; an experimental cooking residue; …

An Investigation Into The Ring-Enlargement Reactions Of Boron Subphthalocyanine And Boron Subnaphthalocyanine, Andrew Jeremiah Jones Jan 2005

An Investigation Into The Ring-Enlargement Reactions Of Boron Subphthalocyanine And Boron Subnaphthalocyanine, Andrew Jeremiah Jones

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Ring enlargement syntheses of axially substituted boron subphthalocyanine and boron subnaphthalocyanine were investigated. The trihexylsiloxy derivatives of subphthalocyanine and subnaphthalocyanine were synthesized. These derivatives were then used in the ring-enlargement trials. Symmetrical and asymmetrical ring-enlargement reactions were carried out in a mixture of toluene and dimethylsulfoxide at room temperature. This study represents the first synthesis of boron subphthalocyanine with trihexylsiloxy group in the axial position and the first investigation into the ring enlargement of boron subnaphthalocyanine in which the axial ligand is a trihexylsiloxy group. Precipitates were formed, and it is believed that the precipitates are the metalfree ring-enlarged products. …
