Phospholipid scramblase 1 (PLSCR1) is an interferon (IFN)- and growth factor-inducible, calcium-binding protein that either inserts into the plasma membrane or binds DNA in the nucleus depending on its state of palmyitoylation. In certain hematopoietic cells, PLSCR1 is required for normal maturation and terminal differentiation from progenitor cells as regulated by select growth factors, where it promotes recruitment and activation of Src kinases. PLSCR1 is a substrate of Src (and Abl) kinases, and transcription of the PLSCR1 gene is regulated by the same growth factor receptor pathways in which PLSCR1 potentiates afferent signaling. The marked transcriptional upregulation of PLSCR1 by …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Nanocrystalline Zinc Ferrite, Gabriel Caruntu, Charles J. O'Connor Sep 2004

Synthesis And Characterization Of Nanocrystalline Zinc Ferrite, Gabriel Caruntu, Charles J. O'Connor

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We report on the synthesis of highly uniform, single phase zinc ferrite films prepared through a single step low temperature reaction by the liquid phase deposition (LPD) method. X-ray diffraction, TGA and EDX
measurements support the assumption that the as-deposited films are constituted from a mixture of crystallized FeOOH and amorphous Zn(OH)2. Upon heat treatment in air at 600 uC for one hour the intermediates are subsequently converted into the corresponding zinc ferrites. The films with adjustable chemical compositions are identified as having a spinel-type crystal structure and present a spherical or rod-like microstructure, depending on the Zn content. The …

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Measurements of nondipole parameters in spin-orbit-resolved Xe 4d photoionization demonstrate dynamical differences arising from relativistic effects. The experimental data do not agree with relativistic random-phase approximation calculations of single ionization dipole and quadrupole channels. It is suggested that the discrepancy is due to the omission of multiple-excitation quadrupole channels, i.e., quadrupole satellite transitions.

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

Disorder in Gd2Ti2O7 is investigated by near-edge x-ray-absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). NEXAFS shows Ti4+ ions occupy octahedral sites with a tetragonal distortion induced by vacant oxygen sites. O 1s XPS spectra obtained with a charge neutralization system from Gd2Ti2O7(100) and the Gd2Ti2O7 pyrochlore used by Chen et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 105901 (2002)], both yielded a single peak, unlike the previous result on the latter that found two peaks. The current results give no evidence for …

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The Lead-Bismuth eutectic (LBE) has been determined from previous experimental studies by the Russians and the European scientific community to be a potential material that can be used as a spallation target and coolant for the TRP proposed application. Properly controlling the oxygen content in LBE can drastically reduce the LBE corrosion to structural steels. However, existing knowledge of material corrosion performance was obtained from point-wise testing with only very sparse experimental data. Scientists have noticed that the concentration of oxygen dissolved in the liquid alloy could control the corrosion rate of steels exposed to Pb or Pb-Bi. At high …

Chemical Microetching Of Three-Dimensional Gear-Like Pattern On Nickel Surface, Zhu-Fang Liu

Journal of Electrochemistry

The chemical micromachining on nickel surface with three-dimensional (3D) gear-like mold was realized by confined etchant layer technique (CELT). By using effective chemical etching and scavenging system (HNO_(3) + NaOH) and optimizing experimental parameters, such as the etching time, etching current density, concentration of the etchant or and scavenger, we obtained the etched pattern, which is close to negative copy of the mold. The etched micro-pattern characterized by SEM and AFM, demonstrates that CELT can be applied to the 3-D microstructure replication on nickel surface .

Journal of Electrochemistry

Copper (II) paratolysulfate has been synthesized and characterized by thermo-gravimetric (TG) measurements and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) analysis. This salt can easily lose all crystal water and the dehydrated salt does not deliquesce in the air. It is found for the first time that the complex of Cu(p-OTs)_(2)/ethanolamine(1∶1) can catalyze the oxidation of 1,1′-bi-2-naphthol in DMSO and DMF, while the process is difficult to perform in H_(2)O and CH_(3)OH. The electrochemical behaviors of both Cu(p-OTs)_(2) and its complexes with ethanolamine have been studied on platinum electrode in DMSO, DMF, (CH_(3)OH) and H_(2)O respectively. The complexes of various copper salts with …

Nucleation And Crystal Growth Of Pt Electrodeposition On Poly Crystal Au Microdisc Electrode, Zhi-Yong Tao, Pei-Fang Liu Aug 2004

Nucleation And Crystal Growth Of Pt Electrodeposition On Poly Crystal Au Microdisc Electrode, Zhi-Yong Tao, Pei-Fang Liu

Journal of Electrochemistry

Based on the Fleischmann's model of nucleation and crystal growth for electrodeposition combined with the Barradas-Bosco's adsorption-nucleation model for electrochemical phase formation, the chronoamperometry was well fitted for Pt deposition on polycrystalline Au micro disc electrodes (30 μm in diameter) in different H_(2)PtCl_(6) concentrations at different over-potentials. The initial stage of Pt deposition in dilute H_(2)PtCl_(6) could be interpreted by the model of H_(2)PtCl_(6 ) adsorption combined with instantaneous nucleation and two-dimensional cylindrical growth. The rate constant of the two-dimensional growth increased linearly with overpotential. Then the deposit grew layer by layer and the rate constant increased non-linearly with overpotential. …

Lithium Insertion Into Tio_2(B) Nanobelts Synthesized By The "Soft Chemical" Method, Cha-Geng Nie, Zheng-Liang Gong, Lan Sun, Juan Zuo, Yue-Kun Lai, Chang-Jian Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

TiO_(2)(B) Nanobelts were synthesized by using the "Soft chemical"method. The products were characterized by means of transmission electron microscope(TEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD), Raman spectrum and energy dispersive spectrum(EDS). Galvanostatic charging and discharging tests showed that lithium-ion intercalation/deintercalation occurred reversibly in the TiO_(2)(B) nanobelts electrode, and a high capacity (265 mAh·g~(-1)) can be obtained. The results suggested that TiO_(2)(B) Nanobelts might be a promising negative electrode material of second Lithium battery.

Preliminary Study Of Speek Membranes For Direct Methanol Fuel Cells Application, Su-Zhen Ren

Journal of Electrochemistry

This paper describes the methanol permeability characterization of SPEEK membranes and their feasibility for DMFC application. The SPEEK membranes showed a significant lower methanol permeation than Nafion~115 determined from voltammetric methods. An increase in open circuit voltage was found in the performance of SPEEK membranes in DMFC. The power density of the cell using SPEEK membrane was considerably poorer than that of Nafion~115. If modified properly, the SPEEK membranes can be chosen for DMFC application based on this study.
