A new imaging system based on a photoinitiated electron transfer chain reaction is reported. Specifically, irradiation of 9,10-dicyanoanthracene (sensitizer) leads to the conversion of Dewar benzene derivatives (reactants) to benzene derivatives (products) within solid polymer films. The mechanism of the reaction may involve chemical amplification with cation radicals ("holes") as the catalytic species. We present herein studies of both molecularly doped polymers and polymers containing Dewar benzene moieties attached to side chains. The refractive index of the materials could be tuned within a narrow range using this photochemical reaction, as demonstrated by the writing of persistent gratings in forced Rayleigh …

Collisions of I-2 in the E electronic state with rare gas atoms result in electronic energy transfer to the D, beta, and D-' ion-pair electronic states. Rate constants for each of these channels have been measured when I-2 is initially prepared in the J=55, v=1 and 2 levels in the E state. The rate constants and effective hard sphere collision cross sections confirm the trends observed when v=0 in the E state is initially prepared: He collisions favor population of the D state, while Ar collisions favor population of the beta state. Two gadolinium(III) chelates, GdNP-DO3A (1-methlyene-(p-NitroPhenol)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacycloDOdecane-4,7,10-triAcetate) and GdNP-DO3AM (1-methlyene(p-NitroPhenol)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacycloDOdecane-4,7,10-triacetAMide), containing a single nitrophenolic pendant arm plus either three acetate or three amide pendant arms were synthesized and characterized. The properties of the gadolinium, terbium, and dysprosium complexes of these ligands were examined as a function of pH. The extent and mechanism of the changes in water relaxivity with pH of each gadolinium complex was found to differ substantially for the two complexes. The research presented in this thesis was motivated by questions on the effect of nanoscale confinement on molecular conformation and related photophysical properties of conjugated polymers. Using microdroplet techniques as a method of isolating single molecules of various poly[phenylene vinylenes] we discovered that poly[2-methoxy-5- (2’-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene] (MEH-PPV) and poly[2-Methoxy-5-(2'- ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-(cyanovinylene)phenylene] (CN-PPV) can be deposited on precleaned glass substrates with unique transition moment orientation. Structural investigation using a combination of fluorescence emission pattern imaging, atomic force microscopy and polarization anisotropy measurements revealed that individual polymer nanostructures had a high degree of intra-molecular with the long axis of the conjugated segment oriented …

There is a growing literature demonstrating the effectiveness of using computer environments to assist students’ in visualizing science and mathematics concepts. However, with many of these computerized learning environments, students do not have the option of manipulating the environment. Instead, they are presented with pre-made visualizations. Enabling students to display their understanding through multiple representational forms is more interesting. In our peer-led, peer-review environment, students generate a complex, literature-based, multimedia text on which their final examination is based. We report the preparation of spin-coated nickel-doped zinc oxide nanocrystalline thin films using high-quality colloidal diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) quantum dots as solution precursors. These films show robust ferromagnetism with Curie temperatures above 350 K and 300 K saturation moments up to 0.1 Bohr magnetons per nickel. These results demonstrate a step toward the use of colloidal zero-dimensional DMS nanocrystals as building blocks for the bottom-up construction of more complex ferromagnetic semiconductor nanostructures.

Standard calibration methods used to determine trace analytes usually yield significant deviations from the actual analyte value in the presence of interferents in the assay media. These deviations become of particular concern when the concentration of the analyte is low, and when the results are used to draw mechanistic or kinetic conclusions, for instance in enzyme structure-function studies. In these circumstances, the H-point standard addition method (HPSAM) provides superior precision and accuracy. This method is developed here for the case of the spectrophotometric Griess assay used to determine nitrite in various enzymology investigations, such as nitrite determination in studies of …

The process of C-C bond formation via Directed ort/zo-Metalation (DoM) consists of two separate steps. Utilizing fractional equivalents of TMEDA in hydrocarbon solvents at 60°C, o-lithiation of anisole and dimethylaniline can be effected in >95% yields. The first step in the DoM process involves preparation of solid samples of these o-lithiointermediates. Completing the sequence, the second step concerns formation of a new arene-derivative bond at the reactive site. For this thesis the arene-derivative bond formed is to carbon. Various carbon electrophiles have been studied using different solvent systems, and results reveal a possible disconnect between the reaction conditions for the …

High speed and/or high efficiency separations can be realized using small particles (~ 1 µm) in liquid chromatography (LC). However, due to the large pressure drop caused by small particles, conventional LC pumping systems cannot satisfy the pressure requirements needed to drive the mobile phase through the column. Use of ultrahigh pressure, elevated temperature, or both can overcome these pressure limitations and allow the use of very small particles for high speed and/or high efficiency separations.

Glutamate 151 has been proposed to act as the general acid/base during the peptide hydrolysis reaction catalyzed by the co-catalytic metallohydrolase from Aeromonas proteolytica (AAP). However, to date, no direct evidence has been reported for the role of Glu-151 during catalytic turnover by AAP. In order to elucidate the catalytic role of Glu-151, altered AAP enzymes have been prepared in which Glu-151 has been substituted with a glutamine, an alanine, and an aspartate. The ion-pair states of molecular iodine provide a unique system for studying the efficiency, selectivity, and mechanisms of collision-induced non-adiabatic transitions. Non-adiabatic transitions between the first-tier ion-pair states in collisions with molecular partners and rare gases are analyzed and discussed. The qualitative features of the rate constants and product state distributions under single collision conditions are summarized and interpreted in terms of appropriate theoretical approaches. Two mechanisms for the non-adiabatic transitions are clearly identified. The first, operative for collisions involving molecular partners possessing permanent or transition electrostatic moments, is highly selective. It connects the initially prepared level in the E …

As indicated in the original proposal, the primary objective of this task was to evaluate the effect of hydrogen on environment-assisted cracking of candidate target structural materials for applications in spallation-neutron-target (SNT) systems such as accelerator production of tritium (APT) and accelerator transmutation of waste (ATW). The materials selected for evaluation and characterization were martensitic stainless steels including Alloy EP 823, HT-9, and Type 422 stainless steel. We have developed an algorithm called Q5 for probabilistic classification of healthy vs. disease whole serum samples using mass spectrometry. The algorithm employs Principal Components Analysis (PCA) followed by Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) on whole spectrum Surface-Enhanced Laser Desorption/Ionization Time of Flight (SELDI-TOF) Mass Spectrometry (MS) data, and is demonstrated on four real datasets from complete, complex SELDI spectra of human blood serum.
Q5 is a closed-form, exact solution to the problem of classification of complete mass spectra of a complex protein mixture. Q5 employs a novel probabilistic classification algorithm built upon a dimension-reduced linear discriminant analysis. Our solution is …

Oxide growth on sputter-deposited thin films is studied on the local scale by atomic force microscope (AFM)-assisted lithography. We investigate the group IV reactive metals Zr, Hf, Ti, and their nitrides.-The nitrogen content of the deposition plasma affects the film crystal structure and electrical resistivity, which in turn alter the local oxidation rates. Mass transport plays an important role, producing features with heights ranging from a few nanometers up to hundreds of nanometers. The heights of the largest features are one to two orders of magnitude greater than observed in other material systems, and the growth is well controlled. We …

The Co3O4 (110) single crystal surface has been characterized by low energy electron diffraction (LEED), Auger electron spectroscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). LEED analysis of the clean Co3O4 (110) spinel surface shows a well-ordered pattern with sharp diffraction features. The XPS spectra are consistent with stoichiometric Co3O4 as determined by the concentration ratio of oxygen to cobalt (CO /CCo) and spectral peak shape. In particular, the cobalt 2p XPS spectra are characteristic of the spinel structure with Co3+ occupying octahedral sites and Co2+ …

The related disorders of obesity and diabetes are increasing to epidemic proportions. The role of neutral lipid storage and hydrolysis, and hence the adipocyte, is central to understanding this phenomenon. The adipocyte holds the major source of stored energy in the body in the form of triacylglycerols (TAG). It has been known for over 35 years that the breakdown of TAG and release of free (unesterified) fatty acids and glycerol from fat tissue can be regulated by a cAMP-mediated process. The corrosion of steel by lead–bismuth eutectic (LBE) is an important issue in proposed nuclear transmutation schemes. Russian scientists at the IPPE exposed steel samples to oxygen-controlled LBE at temperatures up to 823 K and exposure times up to 3000 h. We have characterized these post-exposure steel samples and unexposed controls, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Previous researchers have investigated the corrosion by LBE of steel of varying composition. The algorithm by Northrup, Allison, and McCammon has been used for two decades for calculating the diffusion-influenced rate-constants of enzymatic reactions. Although many interesting results have been obtained, the algorithm is based on the assumption that substrate-substrate interactions can be neglected. This approximation may not be valid when the concentration of the ligand is high. In this work, we constructed a simulation model that can take substrate-substrate interactions into account. We first validated the model by carrying out simulations in ways that could be compared to analytical theories. Computer simulations are performed to study the polymerization behavior in a mixture of bifunctional groups such as olefins (A) and acrylates (B) in an effective solvent (a coarse description for vegetable oil derived macromonomers (VOMMs) in solution) on a cubic lattice. A set of interactions between these units and solvent (S) constituents and their relative concentrations (p(A), p(B), and p(S)) are considered. Samples are equilibrated with Metropolis algorithm to model the perceived behavior of VOMMs. The covalent bonding between monomeric units is then implemented via reaction pathways initiated by stochastic motion of free radicals (a very small fraction). Pyrrolizidine benzamide (±)-2, the bridgehead-methyl analog of SC-53116, was prepared and evaluated for 5-HT4 agonism activity in the rat tunica muscularis (TMM) mucosae assay. Compound (±)-2 has an EC50 of 449 nM in the TMM assay, as compared to 23 nM for SC-53116, and 66 nM for the racemate of SC-53116.

Airborne measurements of trace gases and particles over and downwind of two prescribed savanna fires in Zambia are described. The measurements include profiles through the smoke plumes of condensation nucleus concentrations and normalized excess mixing ratios of particles and gases, emission factors for 42 trace gases and seven particulate species, and vertical profiles of ambient conditions. Characterization of an epoxy resin film, commonly known as SU-8, is presented using thickness shear mode (TSM) quartz resonator. The impedance-admittance characteristics of the equivalent circuit models of the unperturbed and coated resonators are analyzed to extract the storage modulus and loss modulus (G' and G''). Those parameters are needed to establish SU-8 film as an effective wave-guiding layer in the implementation of guided shear-horizontal surface acoustic wave (SH-SAW) sensor platforms. Numerous tests have been conducted on the feasibility of characterizing the surfaces of metal oxide powders using HPLC. An in-line filter housing was modified to serve as a sample chamber to replace the sample loop. A gradient pump was used to gradually increase eluent acidity to find the conditions at which the surface of a metal oxide powder began to dissolve. The theoretical masses of surface monolayers of metal oxide powders were compared with the experimentally determined masses of dissolved material thought to be from the surface to test whether surface and bulk dissolution phenomena in acidic conditions are separable …

[1] Airborne measurements of trace gases and particles over and downwind of two prescribed savanna fires in Zambia are described. The measurements include profiles through the smoke plumes of condensation nucleus concentrations and normalized excess mixing ratios of particles and gases, emission factors for 42 trace gases and seven particulate species, and vertical profiles of ambient conditions.
