Nucleation Experiments with Monodisperse NaCl Aerosols Showed Good Agreement with the Kohler Theory Relating the Critical Super-Saturation S//c to the Dry Size. Aerosols Produced by Condensing NaCl Showed the Same S//c as Those Produced by Evaporating Aqueous NaCl Solution Droplets. This Indicates that If There is an Energy Barrier in Going from a Dry NaCl Particle to a Solution Droplet, This Energy Barrier is Small. the Fact that the Evaporation Aerosol Particles Are Cubical Crystals and the Condensation Aerosols Are Amorphous Spheres is Shown to Make No Difference in the Nucleation Threshold. the Investigation Also Gives Insights into the Performance …

The reaction entropies ∆S°_rc of a number of transition metal redox couples of the form M(III)/(II) in aqueous solution have been determined using nonisothermal electrochemical cells in order to explore the effect of varying the ligand structure upon the nature of the ion-solvent interactions. Examinations of six aquo couples of the form M(OH_2)_n&3+/2+ with varying metal M yielded ∆S°_rc values in the range 36-49 eu. In order to scrutinize the effect of replacing aquo with ammine and simple anionic ligands, Ru(III)/(II) couples were employed since the relative substituion inertness of both oxidation states allowed ∆S …

During heme deficiency in reticulocyte lysates, a translational inhibitor (heme-regulated inhibitor, HRI) that blocks polypeptide chain initiation is activated. HRI is a protein kinase that specifically phosphorylates the 38,000-dalton subunit of the Met-tRNAfMet binding factor, eIF-2. Phosphorylation of eIF-2 by HRI prevents its interaction with at least two additional factors, resulting in a net reduction in formation of ternary complex (Met-tRNAfMet eIF-2•GTP) and AUG-dependent transfer of Met-tRNAfMet to 40S ribosomal subunits. A factor (sRF) that reverses protein synthesis inhibition in heme-deficient Iysates has been purified from reticulocyte postribosomal supernatant. sRF also reverses the inhibition …

A Study On Gaseous Ebullitions Of De Gray Reservoir, Arkansas, David Pinkston
Honors Theses
This study was undertaken in order to determine the nature of and the factors that influence the gaseous ebullitions of De Gray Reservoir near Arkadelphia, Arkansas during a yearly cycle.
Two major types of gaseous ebullition are described in the literature. The first has to do with the production and ebullition of elemental oxygen from photosynthesis (Porcella et al., 1975). Hutchinson (1957) predicts that the formation of oxygen bubbles in this manner is limited to very shallow, well lighted, warm waters.
The second type of gaseous ebullition involves the anaerobic digestion of organic matter (Reeburgh, 1969). Anaerobic conditions exist in …

The plasma polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) is studied in a capacitively coupled system with internal electrodes using a 10 kHz (af) and a 60 Hz (ac) source. The emphasis is on identifying conditions that are compatible with continuous coating of plasma polymer on a substrate moving through the center of the interelectrode gap. Operation at a pressure below 100 mTorr is most favorable for deposition of a substantial portion of the plasma polymer on this substrate. Plasma polymer deposited in this way is characterized by ESCA and by deposition rate data and compared to that deposited using rf power in …

Cndo Calculations On The Structure Of A Liquid Sodium Carboxylate-Carboxylic Acid Compound, Beverly Bendiksen, Stig Friberg, Patricia L.M. Plummer
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The molecular interactions in a carboxylic acid/sodium carboxylate compound which is a liquid at room temperature were calculated using a CNDO/2 approach. The calculations gave results distinguishing the energy for different conformations in the molecular compound. The maximum binding energy was found for a structure in which the four acids were bridging with a hydrogen bond from the acid OH group to the carboxylate group and the acid carbonyl groups forming a ligand bond to the carboxylate sodium ion. © 1979 Academic Press, Inc.

The plasma polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) is studied in a capacitively coupled system with internal electrodes using radio frequency (13.56 MHz) power. The emphasis is on identifying conditions that are compatible with continuous coating of plasma polymer on a substrate moving through the center of the interelectrode gap. At high pressure (500 mTorr), deposition of plasma polymer is primarily on the electrodes rather than on a substrate placed midway between electrodes. Glow is observed in only part of the interelectrode gap at low powers and fills the gap only at high power levels. The use of a magnetic field effects …
Separation Of 1,3-Pentadiene With Molecular Sieves, Steven R. Schwinn
Separation Of 1,3-Pentadiene With Molecular Sieves, Steven R. Schwinn
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The feasibility of separating piperylene (1,3-pentadiene) from a mixture of five-carbon olefins and diolefins with Linde 5A Molecular Sieves was investigated. Olefins and especially diolefins are very reactive and tend to polymerize on the highly polar adsorptive surface thereby clogging the pores of themolecular sieve. It is believed that the acid sites within the zeolite cages catalyze this polymerization reaction and that poisoning of these sites by adsorption of a nitrogenous base (ethylenediamine, dimethylamine or ammonia) or hydrogen sulfide inhibits the formation of polymers. Two criteria were used in the evaluation of the polymerization inhibitors tested. First, a series of …

Gas Phase Laser Induced Fluorescence Spectroscopy Of Cfcl, Stephen E. Bialkowski, David S. King, John C. Stephenson
Stephen E. Bialkowski
The CFCl radical has been produced in the gas phase by both IR multiphotonphotolysis of C2F3Cl and He metastable reaction with C2F3Cl. Single vibronic level fluorescence and excitation spectra taken of this species have yielded sufficient information to determine certain vibronic constants. The excited state was found to have an origin of T0=25 283±5 cm−1 with vibrational frequencies: ω2′=394±3 cm−1 and ω3′=739±5 cm−1. In the ground state, the vibrational frequencies were found to be: ω3″=118±10 cm−1, ω2″=448±6 cm …
Esculin Hydrolysis In The Enterobacteriaceae, Jane Shigeko Okada
Esculin Hydrolysis In The Enterobacteriaceae, Jane Shigeko Okada
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Esculin hydrolysis, as mentioned earlier, is now a recognized test in the identification of Group P enterococci. However, its use as a taxonomic tool in differentiating the genera and species of Enterobacteriaceae has not been widely accepted, partly because of the conflicting reports in the literature and partly because of the availability of more reliable tests. Some commercial kits (MS-2, Abbott Laboratories, Dallas, Texas; Micro-Id General Diagnostics, Morris Plains, New Jersey), however, have incorporated it among their battery of biochemical tests.
The nature of the enzyme has not studied for bacteria other than the KES group and E.coli.

Plasma Polymerization Of Tetrafluoroethylene. I. Inductive Radio Frequency Discharge, H. Yasuda, N. Morosoff, E. S. Brandt, C. N. Reilley
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The plasma polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene in an inductively coupled radio frequency glow discharge, using a flow system, was studied. A simple long tube reactor, with the coupling coil placed at the middle of the tube and gas entrance and exit at the respective ends, was used. Deposition rates and the chemical nature of the polymer (as revealed by ESCA spectra and surface energy studies) are obtained as a function of location in the reactor tube with respect to the coupling coil and of applied energy per unit mass of tetrafluoroethylene (W/FM). It was found that a fluorine poor polymer, containing …

I. Extracellular Metabolites From Coprinus Macrorhizus Microsporus. Isolation And Characterization Of Hydroxylagopodin B. Ii. The Cell Wall Composition And Structure Of Coprinus Macrorhizus Microsporus, Carey Bernard Bottom
Doctoral Dissertations
“A purple pigment excreted into the culture medium of a mutant strain of the basidiomycete, Coprinus macrorhizus var. microsporus (ATCC 34960) has been isolated and characterized as hydroxylagopodin B based on ultraviolet, infrared, and mass spectral data. A wild-type strain of C. macrorhizus microsporus does not produce the purple pigment, however it does produce lagopodin B which is yellow in solution. Identification of lagopodin B was based on its melting point, the purple color of its alkaline solution, the mass spectrum, and mobility equivalence with a standard by thin-layer chromatography. The production of hydroxylagopodin B in the mutant strain is …

Fate Of Some Common Radionuclides Found In Dardanelle Lake, David M. Chittenden Ii
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Four factors influence the concentrations of radionuclides in Dardanelle Lake water: injections due to fallout and discharge from Nuclear I coupled with losses due to decay, to dilution and to sedimentation. It is possible to estimate the first three factors and to measure monthly changes in the concentrations of Sr-89, Ce-141, Cs-137, Co-38, Ce-144, and Sr-90 - Y-90 during periods when the concentrations of these nuclides are abnormally high (after large releases or the Chinese weapons tests) or abnormally low (during reactor refueling).

Preparation Of N,N-Dimethylhydrazones And 1,1-Dimethylpyrazolium-5-Oxides, Tso-Ping Li
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to prepare the 1,1-dimethylpyrazolium-5-oxides from a variety of N,N-dimethylhydrazones which can be prepared from the corresponding β-ketoesters.
Substitution of a methyl group at α-position of β-ketoesters makes the formation of N,N-dimethylhydrazones more difficult. The electron-withdrawing group (-NO2) and the electron-releasing group (-OCH3) as a parasubstituent of the benzene ring have the electrostatic effect to the nucleophilic attack of dimethylhydrazine to form the N,N-dimethylhydrazones.
It was found that N,N-dimethylhydrazones exist as a mixture of keto and enol tautomers based on the ir and nmr spectra. A semiquantitative analysis of the tautomerism …

A Polarographic Study Of Fe(Ii) And Fe(Iii) Complexes With Catechol, Wen-Tang Shen
Dissertations and Theses
A study of the anodic polarography of catechol in 0.100 F sodium perchlorate is presented. A new wave is observed in alkaline solutions which is different from the simple oxidation wave of catechol to ortho-quinone observed by previous workers. The importance of buffer materials is discussed and a possible explanation of the new wave is suggested.
A study of the polarography behavior of Fe(II) and Fe(III) in the presence of catechol is reported. In the case of reduction of Fe(III) in the presence of catechol, two steps occur at about -1.5 and -1.8 volts (vs. SCE) at pH higher than …

Spectroscopic Study Of Ni(Ii)-4, 4’, 4’’, 4’ ’’ – Tetrasulfophthalocyanine In Aqueous Solution, Issa Ishaq Jabra
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
It was determined spectrally that a monomer-dimer equilibrium exists in aqueous solutions of Ni-TSPC4- over a concentration range of 5 x 10-8 – 10-4 M. Equilibrium measurements were made under natural ionic strength conditions at 29°, 39° and 49°C. The values obtained for the equilibrium constants at 29°, 39° and 49°C were 2.4 x 108, 6.6 x 107 and 2.9 x 107 M-1, respectively. These results indicated that the equilibrium strongly favors dimer formation. This study also showed that nickel is second to copper in enhancing the dimerization of metallotetrasulfophthalocyanine complexes. …

An Emulsion Dye Laser, Kenneth Lee Matheson, James M. Thorne
An Emulsion Dye Laser, Kenneth Lee Matheson, James M. Thorne
Faculty Publications
A laser dye which is insoluble in water has been dissolved in hexane and emulsified in a water matrix. When pumped with a nitrogen laser, this mixture was observed to lase. The emulsion is superior to a simple hexane solution because the excellent thermo-optical properties of the water matrix help prevent refractive-index gradients from degrading laser performance. This is a useful characteristic for flash-pumped dye lasers, laser-pumped dye lasers, and liquid filters. Another type of solvent system, a critical solution, is also discussed. For certain dyes, a critical solution has even better thermo-optical properties because of its ability to absorb …
Light Scattering Studies Of Orientational Fluctuations Of Cs2, Scott Whittenburg
Light Scattering Studies Of Orientational Fluctuations Of Cs2, Scott Whittenburg
Chemistry Faculty Publications
We have measured the depolarized Rayleigh relaxation time of CS2 as a function of temperature and concentration in an optically isotropic solvent CCl4. The concentration dependence of the relaxation times indicates the importance of orientational pair correlation in CS2. The orientational pair correlation factor is found to depend on concentration at high CS2 concentration, as well as viscosity and temperature, in contrast to what is observed in other small molecules. The single particle reorientation times were obtained by extrapolating from the depolarized Rayleigh relaxation times to infinite dilution. These were compared with the predictions of the hydrodynamic slip and stick …

The primary tissue sites of catabolism of plasma proteins with long circulating half-lives are unknown. It has been difficult to identify these sites because plasma proteins are delivered to tissues at relatively slow rates but are rapidly degraded intracellularly within lysosomes. Therefore, a tracer attached to protein is lost from the site of uptake before an amount sufficient for quantitation can accumulate. We hypothesized that sucrose (Glupal-2 /3Fruf) would be a useful label to circumvent this difficulty because of the stability of sucrose in lysosomes; and thus, sucrose should remain in tissue long after the protein to which it was …
A Model For The Surface Of A Molten Salt, Jerry Goodisman, R. W. Pastor
A Model For The Surface Of A Molten Salt, Jerry Goodisman, R. W. Pastor
Chemistry - All Scholarship
A model is proposed for the two-particle distribution functions for the surface region of a system composed of two oppositely charged species with identical hard sphere repulsions. The distribution functions are formed from those for the bulk fluid by incorporating a cutoff corresponding to the surface and a multiplying factor defined so as to guarantee electroneutrality while maintaining the proper symmetry. Various methods for doing this are discussed. Good agreement is obtained for surface tension and surface energy. Density oscillations are predicted.
