Isomerization And Dehydrocyclization Of 1,3-Pentadiene, Thomas E. Marcinkowski Jul 1979

Isomerization And Dehydrocyclization Of 1,3-Pentadiene, Thomas E. Marcinkowski

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Piperylene concentrate is a complex mixture of 5-carbon unsaturated hydrocarbons obtained as a by-product when naphtha or gas oils are cracked. The major component in this mixture is 1,3-pentadiene. During the course of this study, a number of trials, utilizing liquid phase reaction conditions, were made to investigate the geometric isomerization of 1,3-pentadiene and its separation from the piperylene concentrate. Isomerization was accomplished employing catalytic amounts of iodine at temperatures ranging from 0°C to reflux. Using this method, the maximum amount of trans-1,3-pentadiene obtained was 70% as compared to 51% in the piperylene concentrate. Recovery of the product was 90%, …

Thermal Effects On The Optical Spectra Of A Polydiacetylene: Poly{1,2-Bis [4-(Isopropylcarbamoyloxy) -N-Butyl]-1-Buten-3-Ynylene}, H. Eckhardt, Craig J. Eckhardt, K.C. Yee Jun 1979

Thermal Effects On The Optical Spectra Of A Polydiacetylene: Poly{1,2-Bis [4-(Isopropylcarbamoyloxy) -N-Butyl]-1-Buten-3-Ynylene}, H. Eckhardt, Craig J. Eckhardt, K.C. Yee

Craig J. Eckhardt Publications

The reflection spectra of single crystals of the polydiacetylene, IPUDO [R= (CH2)4OCONHCH (CH3)2], were measured between 25° C and 160° C. A nearly reversible thermochromic change is observed together with a variation of hysteresis upon cycling. The latter is attributed to annealing that permits the pendant groups to adopt a conformation which favors the butatriene-type configuration of the polymer at high temperatures. Intensities of the high and low temperature spectra obtained by Kramers–Kronig transforms are in excellent agreement with the spectral intensities of polydiacetylenes which are prototypes for the two configurations.

Co2 Laser-Induced Decomposition Of Freon 113, Jeffrey Joseph Rusik Jun 1979

Co2 Laser-Induced Decomposition Of Freon 113, Jeffrey Joseph Rusik

Honors Theses

Gasgeous freon 113, or CC12FCC1F2, was irradiated with a continous wave carbon dioxide infared laser. The rat of formation of CF2CC1F, a decomposition product, was monitored using an infared spectrometer. The initial rates or product formation were related to irradiation wavelength and power, and the laser induced reaction was related to pyrolysis decomposition. A computer program which calculates the temperatures in a laser beam is modified and applied to the irradiations performed. It is determined that bi- or triphotonic absorption is occuring and that the laser induced reactions are photocatalyzed. A reaction model is discussed which combines thermal excitation, multiphotonic …

Synthesis Of Sterically Hindered Disasters, Richard A. Bankowitz Jun 1979

Synthesis Of Sterically Hindered Disasters, Richard A. Bankowitz

Honors Theses

This thesis examines the synthesis of two sterically hindered diesters, neopentyl glycol dipivaloate and ditert-butyl 2, 2-diethylmalonate. The implications of this hinderance for hydrolysis in basic medium are discussed. The neopentyl glycol diester of 2,2-dimethylpropanoic acid is prepared with little difficulty by reaction of the glycol with the acid chloride in the presence of pyridine. The process gives the desired ester in approximately 66% yield. The preparation of the ditert-butyl ester of diethylmalonic acid is also attempted by means of the acid chloride in the presence of pyridine. Preparation of the diethylmalonyl dichloride using acetonitrile as a solvent in most …

These results aer compared with work on previously studied gold complexes.

Calculation Of Mono-Cyclic Molecular Structures Using Mindo/3, Peter Mark Felker Jun 1979

Calculation Of Mono-Cyclic Molecular Structures Using Mindo/3, Peter Mark Felker

Honors Theses

Molecular geometries of selected, small cyclic compounds were calculated using the semi-epirical, S.C.F. molecular orbital method MINDO/3. Calculated geometries are compared with experiemental values to determine MINDO/3's effectiveness. It is found that the method has several systematic deficiencies. In Particular, carbon-oxygen single bond distances are calculated to be too short.

Study Of Cndo/2 For The Prediction Of Geometries Of Phosphorus-Containing Molecules, Mark A. Fraser

Honors Theses

The method of CNDO/2 is presently being used to study the mechanisms of hydrolysis of phosphate esters. The question, therefore, arises whether or not CNDO/2 can accurately predict the geometries of phosphorus containing molecules. Using an optimizer adapted from the method of Rosenbrock, 41 compounds were tested.

Examination Of The Acid Etching Process Used In Preventative Dentistry, Robert Charles Morgan Jun 1979

Examination Of The Acid Etching Process Used In Preventative Dentistry, Robert Charles Morgan

Honors Theses

Nuva-Seal is a bisphenol-A-glycidyl-methacrylate monomer which in its polymerized form seals a tooth to prevent carie formation. Prior to application the tooth surface is pretreated with an etching solution to increase the bond strength. The etchant solution is 50% by weight H3PO4 and 7% by weight Zn0. Previous investigations preformed at Union College have determined qualitatively that a substantial portion of enamel is removed by the acid pretreatment. In addition, an extensive literature search into the development of the etching process was performed in order to validate or repute its usefulness.

The Concentration And Speciation Of Sugars In Natural Waters, Minoo Shakerin Sweet May 1979

The Concentration And Speciation Of Sugars In Natural Waters, Minoo Shakerin Sweet

Dissertations and Theses

Due to the importance of carbohydrates in biological systems, many efforts have been made to develop a quantitative method for analysis of carbohydrates in natural waters. The low concentrations of dissolved sugars in natural waters require a sensitive analytical method. In this study, gas chromatography of alditol acetate derivatives of sugars was investigated for quantitative and qualitative analysis of individual dissolved sugars in natural waters. The alditol acetate derivatives of sugars give only one derivative for each sugar, yielding qualitative and quantitative results.

The detection limit was 25 nM for each sugar. Because of this very low detection limit, only …

Surface Tensions Of Molten Salt Mixtures, Jerry Goodisman May 1979

Surface Tensions Of Molten Salt Mixtures, Jerry Goodisman

Chemistry - All Scholarship

It is always found that the surface tension of a mixture of molten salts lies below the mean of the surface tensions of the pure components, weighted by mole fractions. Part of this effect is certainly due to the well-known fact that the composition near the surface is enriched in the component of lower surface tension. We show that an effect of the long-range forces, present for fluids involving Coulombic interactions, is of greater importance. The effect is due to the electroneutrality constraint on the distribution functions. As we show by separate calculations, both effects must be considered to obtain …

The Effects Of Bridging Ligands On Anodic Stripping Voltammetric Analysis, Larry Beasley May 1979

The Effects Of Bridging Ligands On Anodic Stripping Voltammetric Analysis, Larry Beasley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) is an electroanalytical method used in the determination of trace metals in solutions volumes of 20 milliliters or less. Generally, 10-6 M concentrations are routinely analyzed.

The analysis of Zn(II), Cd(II), and Cr(III) by ASV was Investigated, and the effects of introducing the bridging ligands, cyanide and thiocyanate into solutions of these metal ions was examined. These effects include a cathodic shift in the reduction potentials of the metals, and ASV signal changes ranging from small increases in peak currents to a total loss of peak-current signals, depending on the concentration of the ligand added.

Preparation Of A Polymer Supported Cobalt (Ii) Schiff Base Catalyst, Susan L. Fuhrman Apr 1979

Preparation Of A Polymer Supported Cobalt (Ii) Schiff Base Catalyst, Susan L. Fuhrman

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Polystyrene bis(salicylaldehyde)-propylene-1,3-diiminato Cobalt (II) (salen) and Polystyrene bis(acetylacetone)-propylene-1,3-diiminato Cobalt (II) (BAE) were prepared stepwise from polystyrl chloride. The reaction series included substitution of the chloride with a malononitrile carbanion, reduction to a diamine, condensation to form a Schiff base, and complexation with Co(II) acetate to form the active polymeric material. Optimum conditions with regard to time, temperature, reaction ratios, and solvent were determined for each reaction. The ability of the polymer bound cobalt complex to oxidize 3-methyl indole was measure. The BAE catalyst yielded a large amount of the corresponding o-formylaminoacetophenone. However, the exact yield is not known because product …

Kinetic Studies Of Polymer-Bound Rhodium (I) Hydrogenation Catalyst, Nee-Yin Chou Apr 1979

Kinetic Studies Of Polymer-Bound Rhodium (I) Hydrogenation Catalyst, Nee-Yin Chou

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

For many years, it has been customary to classify catalysts as homogeneous or heterogeneous. Generally, the former are more active and more selective. But the major disadvantage of the homogeneous catalysts is the need to separate the reaction products and to recover the catalyst, which is often somewhat more expensive than a "classical" heterogeneous catalyst. It has been considered, especially in the last ten years, that there might be advantages in chemically binding a homogeneous catalyst to a solid support.

Polymer-bound, anthranilic acid anchored rhodium (I) catalysts have been prepared. The rate of hydrogenation of cyclohexene has been studied quantitatively, …

Kinematics And Thermodynamics Of Nickel(Ii)-Glycine Complexes Using Carbon Magnetic Resonance, Donald Frederick Shepard Feb 1979

Kinematics And Thermodynamics Of Nickel(Ii)-Glycine Complexes Using Carbon Magnetic Resonance, Donald Frederick Shepard

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

l- 13C glycine was studied in nickel(II) solutions using carbon magnetic resonance (CMR). The carboxy bound nickel(II)-glycine complex and the kinetics of complexation between aquated nickel(II) ion and aquated glycine are described. It has been hypothesized that solutions containing no complexation higher than the chelated mono nickel(II)-glycine complex contain five magnetically different glycine species. The effects of these five magnetically different glycine species on the CMR spectra of the nickel(II)-glycine solutions are discussed.

Nonenzymatically Glucosylated Albumin: In Vitro Preparation And Isolation From Normal Human Serum, James F. Day, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes Feb 1979

Nonenzymatically Glucosylated Albumin: In Vitro Preparation And Isolation From Normal Human Serum, James F. Day, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes

Faculty Publications

Incubation of human serum with D-[6-3H]glucose resulted in the gradual accumulation of radioactivity in acid-precipitable material. Upon chromatography on Sephadex G-200, radioactivity was found associated with each of the major molecular weight classes of serum protein. Purified human serum albumin was also glucosylated in vitro upon exposure to D-[6-3H]glucose in phosphate-buffered saline. The glucosylated and unmodified albumins were separated by ion exchange chromatography. The physiological significance of these observations in vitro was confirmed by the isolation and quantitation of glucosylated albumin from normal human serum. Glucosylated albumin represents approximately 6 to 15% of total serum albumin in normal adults. The …

Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications

Crystallographic analyses of x-ray and neutron diffraction data have provided a definitive structural representation of {HRh[P(O-i-C3H7)3]2}2 and [HRh[P(OCH3)3]2}3. These polynuclear hydrides are generated from square planar H2Rh[P(OR)3]2 units by edge (hydrogen atom) sharing and by vertex (hydrogen atom) sharing to form the dimeric and trimeric structures, respectively. The square-planar units are held together through four-center and three-center two-electron Rh-H-Rh bonds in the dimer and trimer, respectively. The dimer and trimer molecules each add one molecule of hydrogen to …

Partially purified Met-tRNAf binding factor, eIF-2, was phosphorylated by using heme-regulated inhibitor (HRI). Phosphorylated eIF-2 was freed from HRI by phosphocellulose column chromatography. Analysis by isoelectric focusing showed 100% phosphorylation of the 38,000-dalton subunit of eIF-2. Both eIF-2 and eIF-2(P) formed ternary complexes with Met-tRNAf and GTP with almost the same efficiency, and in both cases the ternary complex formation was drastically inhibited by prior addition of Mg2+. However, whereas the ternary complexes formed with eIF-2 could be stimulated by Co-eIF-2C at 1 mM Mg2+ and dissociated by Co-eIF-2B at 5 mM Mg2+, …
