My lab[oratory] is a virtual facility with noncontrolled conditions in which I mostly perform scientific meditation and chats: a nest of ideas (nidus idearum, in Latin). I called the jottings herein scilogs (truncations of the words scientific, and gr. Λόγος – appealing rather to its original meanings "ground", "opinion", "expectation"), combining the welly of both science and informal (via internet) talks (in English, French, and Romanian). * In this fifth book of scilogs collected from my nest of ideas, one may find new and old questions and solutions, mostly referring to topics on NEUTROSOPHY – email messages to research colleagues, …

This paper presents an international study of K-12 Computer Science implementation across Australia, England, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Scotland and the United States. We present findings from a pilot study, comparing CS curriculum requirements (intended curriculum) captured through country reports, with what surveyed teachers (n=244) identify as enacting in their classroom (the enacted curriculum). We address the extent that teachers are implementing the intended curriculum as enacted curriculum, exploring specifically country differences in terms of programming languages and CS topics implemented. Our findings highlight the similarities and differences of intended and enacted CS curriculum within and across countries and the value …

There has been a growing interest and increase in work shared about national K-12 Computer Science Education (CSED) curriculum and implementation efforts around the world. Much of this work focuses on curriculum analysis, country reports, experience reports and case studies. The K-12 CSED community would benefit from an international strategic effort to compare, contrast and monitor K-12 CSED over time, across multiple countries and regions, to understand pedagogy, practice, resources and experiences from the perspective of teachers working in classrooms. Furthermore, there is a need for validated and robust instruments that can support comparable investigations into the current state of …
Pushing The Boundaries Of Participatory Design With Children With Special Needs, Jerry Alan Fails
Pushing The Boundaries Of Participatory Design With Children With Special Needs, Jerry Alan Fails
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Despite its inherent challenges, participatory design (PD) has unique benefits when designing technology for children, especially children with special needs. Researchers have developed a multitude of PD approaches to accommodate specific populations. However, a lack of understanding of the appropriateness of existing approaches across contexts presents a challenge for PD researchers. This workshop will provide an opportunity for PD researchers to exchange and reflect on their experiences of designing with children with special needs. We aim to identify, synthesize and collate PD best practices across contexts and participant groups.
Education: An Essential Aspect For The Future Of Climate Change Prevention, Sophia Frazier
Education: An Essential Aspect For The Future Of Climate Change Prevention, Sophia Frazier
A with Honors Projects
While climate change and its effects have encouraged the use of renewable energy resources such as wind turbines, solar panels, and renewable energy plants in place of nonrenewable resources harmful to our environment—such as coal plants—our ecosystem continues a downward trend. In this A with Honors essay, the student summarize some of the evidence on the impacts of carbon emissions on the environment, highlighting the role of education in increasing awareness of the problem.

Using A Discursive Framework To Analyze Geometric Learning And Instruction, Peter Wiles, Rick Anderson
Using A Discursive Framework To Analyze Geometric Learning And Instruction, Peter Wiles, Rick Anderson
Faculty Research and Creative Activity
In this study we applied a discursive perspective of learning (Sfard, 2008) to a sequence of 21 geometry mini-lessons taught in a fourth grade classroom. From this perspective, learning is defined as changes in mathematical discourse. We first characterize and then compare discourse from the beginning and the end of the mini-lesson sequence. We identify shifts in the discourse that occurred during the sequence. We then discuss how the characteristics of the st geometric discourse informed task design and instruction. This perspective provided a useful means for linking instruction to student learning in an operationalized manner.
Teachers' Perceptions About Instructing Underachieving K-5 Students On Mathematical Word Problem-Solving, Crystal Yvette Baldwindouglas
Teachers' Perceptions About Instructing Underachieving K-5 Students On Mathematical Word Problem-Solving, Crystal Yvette Baldwindouglas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The state of Maryland has implemented the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) operations & algebraic thinking and number & operations-fractions with emphasis on students in Grades K-5 acquiring the ability to solve word problems for state and curriculum math assessments. However, since the implementation of CCSSM, 30% of elementary students in a Maryland school district have demonstrated underachievement (basic or below basic level) on problem-solving sections of the state and school standardized tests. This qualitative case study, guided by Polya's model of the four phases of mathematical problem-solving, was conducted to address this problem. The research questions addressed …
Predictive Factors Of Student Mathematics Achievement Decline Between Third And Fifth Grade, Jean E. Salters
Predictive Factors Of Student Mathematics Achievement Decline Between Third And Fifth Grade, Jean E. Salters
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Low math achievement among elementary school students is a concern because students who lack a strong early foundation in mathematics may experience difficulty learning in future mathematics classes. Students in 2 rural southeastern school districts demonstrated low math achievement in 5th grade and their scores declined from 3rd to 5th grade. In this quantitative study, teacher-related factors that research has shown to predict student achievement were examined using Bandura's theory of self-efficacy and Ball and McDiarmid's emerging theory of subject matter content knowledge. The research question asked whether the teacher factors, years of teaching experience, hours of professional development in …

The Seven Layers Of Complexity Of Recommender Systems For Children In Educational Contexts, Emiliana Murgia, Monica Landoni, Theo Huibers, Jerry Alan Fails, Maria Soledad Pera
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Recommender systems (RS) in their majority focus on an average target user: adults. We argue that for non-traditional populations in specific contexts, the task is not as straightforward–we must look beyond existing recommendation algorithms, premises for interface design, and standard evaluation metrics and frameworks. We explore the complexity of RS in an educational context for which young children are the target audience. The aim of this position paper is to spell out, label, and organize the specific layers of complexity observed in this context.
A Comparative Study Of Kendall-Theil Sen, Siegel Vs Quantile Regression With Outliers, Ahmad Farooqi
A Comparative Study Of Kendall-Theil Sen, Siegel Vs Quantile Regression With Outliers, Ahmad Farooqi
Wayne State University Dissertations
Researchers in social and behavioral sciences usually interested in study the relationship between a response variable Y_i and one or more independent predictors〖 X〗_i either for the purpose of explanation or prediction. Ordinary Least Square Regression is a parametric approach used to study this kind of relationship. One of the disadvantages of Ordinary Least Square is it does not fit well in the presence of outliers in the response variable Y_i or both in the response variable Y_i and the predictor variable〖 X〗_i, also if the data were sampled from a non-normal distribution. Quantile Regression, Theil-Sen regression, and the modified …

Modelling Preservice Science Teachers’ Environment-Friendly Behaviours, Murat Berat Uçar, Erdal Canpolat
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among the preservice science teachers’ proenvironmental behaviours, environmental identity, and ecocentric and anthropocentric attitudes toward environment. A total of 576 (407 females and 169 males) preservice science teachers enrolling in five public universities’ education faculties in Eastern and South-eastern Anatolian Region of Turkey were administered a questionnaire regarding the variables. Convenience sampling method was chosen to constitute the sample of this study. In order to analyse the data collected, descriptive statistics and path analysis as inferential statistics were utilized. According to the results of the study, preservice science teachers …
