Validation Of Waimss Incident Duration Estimation Model, Wei Wu, Pushkin Kachroo, Kaan Ozbay

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

This paper presents an effort to validate the traffic incident duration estimation model of WAIMSS (wide area incident management support system). Duration estimation model of WAIMSS predicts the incident duration based on an estimation tree which was calibrated using incident data collected in Northern Virginia. Due to the limited sample size, a full scale test of the distribution, mean and variance of incident duration was performed only for the root node of the estimation tree, white only mean tests were executed at all other nodes whenever a data subset was available. Further studies were also conducted on the model error …

Existing systems are developed on various traditional computing platforms. However, with the advent of World Wide Web and Internet based programming tools such as Java, it is now possible to develop platform independent decision support tools for the incident management agencies. Any agency will be able to use …

Computer Simulations Of Electromigration Based On A Molecular Dynamics Approach, John Stephen Peake Oct 1998

Computer Simulations Of Electromigration Based On A Molecular Dynamics Approach, John Stephen Peake

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Most research on electromigration has centered around macroscopic simulations of electromigration where a value for the diffusion coefficient was assumed to be spatially uniform throughout the material. The research in this thesis goes a step further and, through microscopic molecular dynamics computer simulations, calculates and updates the atomic drift velocity and atomic position as a function of time to analyze how various defects within the conductor affect these quantities. The simulations are carried out with defects in the form of dislocation half-planes placed in different locations within the simulation space. The atomic drift velocity and position changes derived from these …

Fuzzy Logic Applied To System Control To Enhance Commercial Appliance Performance, Glenn Moffett Jul 1998

Fuzzy Logic Applied To System Control To Enhance Commercial Appliance Performance, Glenn Moffett

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to determine the usefulness of fuzzy logic and fuzzy control when applied to a commercial appliance. Fuzzy logic is a structured, model-free estimator that approximates a function through linguistic input/output associations. Fuzzy rule-based systems apply these methods to solve many types of "real-world" problems, especially where a system is difficult to model, is controlled by a human operator or expert, or where ambiguity or vagueness is common.

This dissertation presents fuzzy sets, fuzzy systems, and fuzzy control, with an example conveying the use of fuzzy control of a consumer product and an overview of …

Experimental Investigations Of Wavelength And Angular Errors In Holographic Gratings With Non-Bragg-Matched Read Beams, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Vivek Ray Jul 1998

Experimental Investigations Of Wavelength And Angular Errors In Holographic Gratings With Non-Bragg-Matched Read Beams, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Vivek Ray

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Perfect Bragg matching is generally desirable for accurate optical interconnections with holographic gratings. In reality, however, gratings may be illuminated by READ beams with non-Bragg-matched angles, or wavelengths, or both. In such cases, the scattered beams are generally misdirected, and may suffer loss of efficiency and possibly more serious errors such as crosstalk noise or missed connections. A conventional wave-vector triad method of analyzing the scattered beam errors leads readily to near-Bragg estimates of the output angular misalignment. However, the READ wave-vector triads appear to indicate a possible wavelength shift in the output beam even with a Bragg-matched READ wavelength, …

Computer simulations of N-body systems are beneficial to study the overall behavior of a number of physical systems in fields such as astrophysics, molecular dynamics, and computational fluid dynamics. A new approach for computer simulations of N-body systems is proposed in this research. The new algorithm is called the Cluster Multipole Algorithm (CMA). The goals of the new algorithm are to improve the applicability to non-point sources and to provide more control on the accuracy over current algorithms. The algorithm is targeted to applications that do not require rebuilding the data structure about the system every time step due to …

An Injection Modelocked Titanium-Sapphire Laser, James C. Hovater Jul 1998

An Injection Modelocked Titanium-Sapphire Laser, James C. Hovater

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

I have investigated the possibility of using an injection modelocked Ti-sapphire laser as a illumination source for GaAs photocathodes. A commercial Ti-sapphire laser was modified to accept a seed pulse from a gain-switched diode laser. Modelocked operation was obtained through gain modulation within the Ti-sapphire crystal as a result of injection seeding with a modelocked pulse train from a gain-switched diode laser. The Ti-sapphire laser essentially becomes a pulse amplifier for the diode laser. Unlike conventional modelocked lasers, the pulse repetition rate of this laser can be discretely varied by setting the seed laser repetition rate equal to multiples of …

Coupled Electrodynamic-Monte Carlo Simulations Of Nanoscale Gaas Terahertz Optical Mixers, Jiang Li Jul 1998

Coupled Electrodynamic-Monte Carlo Simulations Of Nanoscale Gaas Terahertz Optical Mixers, Jiang Li

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The concept of mixing or heterodyning has traditionally been used for microwaves and for radio frequency communications. However, the concept can easily be extended into the optical frequency regime. By doing so, the photomixing process can serve as a very versatile tool for both the generation of ultrahigh frequency (terahertz) and the detection of weak optical signals.

The aim of this thesis is to perform a theoretical study of the photomixing process inside GaAs devices as the non-linear elements. A coupled approach which combines the Monte Carlo simulation scheme for the carrier transport, with Maxwell's equation for the electrodynamics, has …

Electrical Characteristics And Parallel Operation Of Microhollow Cathode Discharges, Wenhui Shi Jul 1998

Electrical Characteristics And Parallel Operation Of Microhollow Cathode Discharges, Wenhui Shi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis describes the electrical properties of microhollow cathode discharges with argon as filling gas. The appearance and current-voltage characteristics of microhollow cathode discharges have been recorded. Three kinds of discharge modes (predischarge, hollow cathode discharge and abnormal discharge) have been observed. The range of operation of the hollow cathode discharge has been found to be 0.5 < pD & 5 Torr cm in argon. By reducing the hole diameter to 100 pm, we were able to operate the discharge to atmospheric pressure in a dc mode. The possibility of dc parallel operation of microhollow cathode discharges was explored. Parallel operation could be obtained without individual ballast for discharges with a positive I-V slope greater than 10 V/mA over a voltage range of more than 5 % of the sustaining voltage. For parallel operation outside the range the ballasting is required. This model was explored by using a segmented anode model. The result of the simple calculation coincides well with the experiment result, where a semi-insulator silicon was used as distributed ballast.

Reactions Of Oxygen And Nitric Oxide In A Microhollow Electrode Discharge, Joseph L. Desormeaux Jr. Jul 1998

Reactions Of Oxygen And Nitric Oxide In A Microhollow Electrode Discharge, Joseph L. Desormeaux Jr.

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Microhollow electrode discharges have been developed and researched in the Physical Electronics Research Institute Laboratories. This discharge typically operates in direct current mode. Microhollow electrode discharges are non-thermal discharges that produce electrons with energies greater than 10 electron volts. Passing gas mixtures through non-equilibrium discharges invokes excitation or dissociation of gas molecules.

The scope of my research was to study the effect of the discharge on the chemistry of two gases, oxygen and nitric oxide in nitrogen mixture. Initial experiments were performed in an effort to produce ozone near atmospheric pressure. This seemed possible since the discharge has a high-energy …

High Pressure Radio-Frequency Microhollow Cathode Discharges, Anja Annett Muller

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A new field of microhollow cathode discharges is represented by the RF microhollow cathode discharge. So far, the behavior and related physical processes of the RF microhollow cathode discharge are not well investigated.

RF microhollow discharges in air at high pressures were investigated under different experimental conditions. The geometry was changed by reducing the cathode hole diameter and the dielectric spacer thickness. By adding a noble gas to air, the influence of additive gases was explored. Additionally, the parallel operation of RF microhollow discharges was investigated.

It was shown that stable RF microhollow cathode discharges could only be sustained up …

Representations, Approximations, And Algorithms For Mathematical Speech Processing, Laura R. Suzuki Jun 1998

Representations, Approximations, And Algorithms For Mathematical Speech Processing, Laura R. Suzuki

Theses and Dissertations

Representing speech signals such that specific characteristics of speech are included is essential in many Air Force and DoD signal processing applications. A mathematical construct called a frame is presented which captures the important time-varying characteristic of speech. Roughly speaking, frames generalize the idea of an orthogonal basis in a Hilbert space, Specific spaces applicable to speech are L2(R) and the Hardy spaces Hp(D) for p> 1 where D is the unit disk in the complex plane. Results are given for representations in the Hardy spaces involving Carleson's inequalities (and its extensions), …

Trigonometric Transforms For Image Reconstruction, Thomas M. Foltz Jun 1998

Trigonometric Transforms For Image Reconstruction, Thomas M. Foltz

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation demonstrates how the symmetric convolution-multiplication property of discrete trigonometric transforms can be applied to traditional problems in image reconstruction with slightly better performance than Fourier techniques and increased savings in computational complexity for symmetric point spread functions. The fact that the discrete Fourier transform a circulant matrix provides an alternate way to derive the symmetric convolution-multiplication property for discrete trigonometric transforms. Derived in this manner, the symmetric convolution-multiplication property extends easily to multiple dimensions and generalizes to multidimensional asymmetric sequences. The symmetric convolution-multiplication property allows for linear filtering of degraded images via point-by-point multiplication in the transform domain …

New Esrelectrochemical Cell Designs For Coaxial Microwave Cavity, Lin Lu Juntao Zhuang May 1998

New Esrelectrochemical Cell Designs For Coaxial Microwave Cavity, Lin Lu Juntao Zhuang

Journal of Electrochemistry

New cell designs for simultaneous electrochemical(EC) and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements are reported for coaxial microwave cavity. Adjustable shieldings are introduced so that the working electrode can be much shorter than the full height of the cavity. Besides the traditional helical electrode, the working electrode can be cylinders made from metal plates, metallic meshes or even composite materials. The counter electrode can be placed either inside or outside the cavity. These features make the new designs more flexible than that previously reported. With a nonperforated cylindrical electrode, this cell can be used to determine the standard potential and the …

InSitu Raman Spectroscopic Study Of The Oxidation And Reduction Of Ag Electrode In Na_2so_4 Solution, Chen Y X, Huang K Q, Tian Z Q

Journal of Electrochemistry

Insitu Raman spectroscopy combined with cyclic voltammogram measurements was used to investigate formation of oxygen species at Ag electrode surfaces during the oxidation and reduction process in 0.1 mol/L Na_2SO_4 solution. The time dependent Raman spectra show that at potentials positive of 0.2 V, adsorption of oxygen atom occurs, while at the potentials positive of 0.4 V, some oxygen atoms migrate into subsurface of the Ag electrode and the other form strongly bound oxygen on the surface through chemical bond. At the same potentials, part of the silver atoms are oxidized and form Ag_2SO_4. During the negative potential ex cursion, …

Thermal Lattice Boltzmann Simulations Of Variable Prandtl Number Turbulent Flows, Min Soe, George Vahala, Pavol Pavlo, Linda L. Vahala, Hudong Chen

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Thermal lattice Boltzmann (TLBE) models that utilize the single relaxation time scalar Bhatnagar, Gross, and Krook collision operator have an invariant Prandtl number. For flows with arbitrary Prandtl number, a matrix collision operator is introduced. The relaxation parameters are generalized so that the transport coefficients become density independent. TLBE simulations are presented for two-dimensional free decaying turbulence induced by a strongly perturbed double velocity shear layer for various Prandtl numbers.

Pulsed diode laser optoacoustic diagnostics were carried out to characterize solid sample materials. The apparatus developed is compact, portable, cost-effective and therefore very promising for both industrial as well as laboratory applications. To our knowledge, this is the first time that optoacoustic characterization and measurement have been performed with a diode laser. The method was successfully applied to measure the thickness of a multilayer structure non-intrusively. Internal cracks of the material were detected by this technique.

A theory for optoacoustic signal generation, propagation and detection is given. A numerical analysis technique is developed to solve for the expected signal. In …
