Application Of Autoregressive Moving Average Linear Prediction Filters To The Characterization Of Solar Wind-Magnetosphere Coupling, Carter N. Borst

Theses and Dissertations

Linear prediction filtering techniques have been used in studying the coupling processes between the solar wind and magnetosphere. The magnetosphere is a complex, dynamic system with at least two independent coupling methods for energy input, driven and unloading. Linear models were built and tested on the Bargatze data set, consisting of over 70 days of geomagnetic indices and solar wind data ordered in 34 intervals of increasing geomagnetic activity. Linear filtering techniques employing single-and multiple-input, autoregressive models predicted values of the magnetic index AL from solar wind data. The impulse response curves of the AL-coupling function groups showed amplitude peaks …

Translation Of 'Profiles In Faith', Monish Ranjan Chatterjee Jan 1996

Translation Of 'Profiles In Faith', Monish Ranjan Chatterjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Sarat Chandra Chatterjee (1876-1938) may be considered one of the three most significant figures of the literary component of the Bengal Renaissance, the other two being Bankim Chandra Chatterjee (1838-1894) and Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941). As much as Bankim Chandra is identified with the new age in the Bengali novel, and the development of serious vernacular journalism, and Rabindranath with modern/classical movements in Bengali poetry and music, along with novel ideas in methods of education and teaching, Sarat Chandra, as a novelist and storyteller, perfected the art of narration and critical analyses of a variety of contemporaneous social and political issues, …

Microhollow Cathode Discharges, K. H. Schoenbach, R. Verhappen, R. Tessnow, F. E. Peterkin, W. W. Byszewski

Bioelectrics Publications

The current–voltage characteristics of hollow cathode discharges and their predischarges in argon under dc and pulsed conditions were found to have a positive slope at pressures up to approximately 50 Torr, and currents up to 20 mA, at a hole diameter of 0.7 mm. In this range of pressure and current, parallel operation of hollow cathode discharges, without ballast, was demonstrated. Scaling to higher pressure is possible by reducing the hole diameter. Pulsed experiments with an array of cathode rings of 75 μm diameter allowed us to obtain parallel operation of more than 50 discharges at a pressure of 350 …

The Projector Basis Method For Electronic Band Structure Calculations, Christopher Haas Jan 1996

The Projector Basis Method For Electronic Band Structure Calculations, Christopher Haas

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Over the last several decades, two methods have emerged as the standard tools for the calculation of electronic band structures. These methods, the Car-Parinello plane wave method and the linear augmented plane wave method (LAPW), each have strengths and weaknesses in different regimes of physical problems. The Car-Parinello algorithm is ideal for calculations with soft pseudopotentials and large numbers of atoms. The LAPW method, on the other hand, easily handles all-electron and hard-core pseudopotential calculations with a small number of atoms. The projector basis method, presented here, is a hybrid mixed basis method which allows the calculation of moderately large …

Surface Debye Temperature Measurement With Reflection High-Energy Electron Diffraction, H. E. Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Measurement of the surface mean-square atomic vibrational amplitude, or equivalently the surface Debye temperature, with reflection high-energy electron diffraction is discussed. Low-index surfaces of lead are used as examples. Particular details are given about the temperature-dependent diffraction pattern of Pb(100) in the Debye-Waller region. The use of reflection high-energy electron diffraction for measurement of the substrate surface temperature in thin-film deposition chambers is suggested. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Modelling An Optical Fiber Bragg Grating, Claudio Oliveira Egalon Jan 1996

Modelling An Optical Fiber Bragg Grating, Claudio Oliveira Egalon

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A theoretical investigation of a single mode optical fiber with one and two superimposed Bragg grating is presented. The formulation relies in the determination of an approximate solution in the asymptotic region of one of the fiber parameters. A correction is then applied to the asymptotic solution using the Method of the Successive Approximations also known as the Piccard Method. The approximation was then compared to the numerical solution using the Runge-Kutta method. Assuming that each Bragg grating has modulation frequencies given by Ω1 and Ω2, it has been found that the second Bragg grating shifts the …

Analysis And Interpretation Of Ion Data Associated With Neutral Gas Releases In The Earth's Ionosphere, Timothy M. Shadid Dec 1995

Analysis And Interpretation Of Ion Data Associated With Neutral Gas Releases In The Earth's Ionosphere, Timothy M. Shadid

Theses and Dissertations

Barium and strontium release experiments were conducted throughout 1991 from the Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite (CRRES) to study both natural and man-made disturbances in the earth's ionosphere. A mass spectrometer on the spacecraft counted the Ba and Sr ions as the cloud expanded. In this study, data from the G-1 (in sunlight) and G-11b (in darkness) releases were modeled to understand the source of the ion signals. The model reproduced the Ba+ sun data well assuming photoionization (τ = 28 s) was the primary ionization mechanism. However, it was not able to account for the remaining ion …

Maximum Likelihood Estimation Of Wave Front Slopes Using A Hartmann-Type Sensor, Scott A. Sallberg Dec 1995

Maximum Likelihood Estimation Of Wave Front Slopes Using A Hartmann-Type Sensor, Scott A. Sallberg

Theses and Dissertations

Current methods for estimating the wave front slope at the pupil of a telescope equipped with a Hartmann-type wave front sensor (H-WFS) are based on a simple centroid calculation of the intensity distributions (spots) recorded in each subaperture of the H-WFS. The centroid method does not include any knowledge concerning correlation properties of the slopes over the subapertures or the amount of light collected by the telescope and diverted to the H-WFS for wave front reconstruction purposes. This thesis devises a maximum likelihood (ML) estimation of the spot centroids by incorporating statistical knowledge of the spot shifts. The light level …

The Role Of Frame Selection And Bispectrum Phase Reconstruction For Speckle Imaging Through Atmospheric Turbulence, Elizabeth A. Harpold Dec 1995

The Role Of Frame Selection And Bispectrum Phase Reconstruction For Speckle Imaging Through Atmospheric Turbulence, Elizabeth A. Harpold

Theses and Dissertations

Frame selection using quality sharpness metrics have been shown in previous AFIT theses, to be effective in improving the final product of images obtained using adaptive optics. This thesis extends this idea to noncompensated speckle image data. Speckle image reconstruction is simulated with and without frame selection. Speckle images require the processing of hundreds of data frames. Frame selection is a method of reducing the amount of data required to reconstruct the image. A collection of short exposure image data frames of a single object are sorted based on sharpness metrics. Only the highest quality frames are retained and processed …

Effects Of Neutron Radiation On Resonant Cavity Light-Emitting Diodes, Daniel S. Hinkel Dec 1995

Effects Of Neutron Radiation On Resonant Cavity Light-Emitting Diodes, Daniel S. Hinkel

Theses and Dissertations

Resonant Cavity Light Emitting Diodes (RCLEDs) were irradiated in Ohio State University's nuclear reactor to determine the effects of Neutron displacement damage. The RCLEDs were characterized both before and after irradiation by their current versus voltage curves (I-V curves) and external light power versus current curves (L-I curves). The I-V curves showed an increase in the "knee voltage" at a neutron fluence of 1.45x1017 neutrons/cm2. Logarithmic decreases in external light power and differential quantum efficiency were observed. Significant decreases in external light power were observed at neutron fluences greater than 5.1x1013 neutrons/cm2. Equations were developed to …

Two-Wavelength Neodymium Based Lasers, Scott H. Mccracken Dec 1995

Two-Wavelength Neodymium Based Lasers, Scott H. Mccracken

Theses and Dissertations

A dual wavelength Q switched laser cavity has been successfully designed and assembled to evaluate the new neodymium (Nd) based materials. Initial characterization has been achieved for Nd:YAG and Nd:YLF. The results indicate that for a fixed pulse repetition frequency, the delay time can be used to adjust the relative energy between the 1.06 and 1.32 micrometer pulses. Any deficiency in the performance of one transition can be made up by performance in the other simply by changing the relative amount of time the population inversion is allowed to build up for each pulse. The best performance was obtained using …

Analysis Of Ladar Range Resolution Enhancement By Sinusoidal Phase Modulation, Leonard T. Masters, Martin B. Mark, Bradley D. Duncan Nov 1995

Analysis Of Ladar Range Resolution Enhancement By Sinusoidal Phase Modulation, Leonard T. Masters, Martin B. Mark, Bradley D. Duncan

Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications

The ability of a ladar system to resolve two or more separate returns from a combined echo is related to the effective correlation bandwidth of the pulse emitted by the ladar system. Phase modulation of an outgoing pulse introduces additional frequency components, which increases the effective correlation bandwidth of the pulse and thus improves the range resolution of the system. In this paper, we discuss the general theoretical basis for achieving improved range resolution using a modulated waveform and a matched filter receiver. We then demonstrate these concepts by considering the particular case of improved range resolution for a sinusoidally …

Image Restoration Of Dispersion-Degraded Images From A Liquid-Crystal Beam Steerer, Ronald J. Broessel, Vince Dominic, Russell C. Hardie Nov 1995

Image Restoration Of Dispersion-Degraded Images From A Liquid-Crystal Beam Steerer, Ronald J. Broessel, Vince Dominic, Russell C. Hardie

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Liquid-crystal arrays represents one of the first practical technologies capable of steering light by electronic control only. We use such a device to steer the field of view of a broadband imaging sensor. Unfortunately, dispersion degrades the image quality by smearing out details in the image and by introducing multiple diffraction orders (echoes) at the detector plane. We present a method to compensate for these unwanted effects and thus restore the broadband images obtained with the beam steerer. We use the beam-propagation method to find the wavelength-dependent impulse response, from which we determine the appropriate Wiener filter. When training data …

Heterodyne Ladar System Efficiency Enhancement Using Single-Mode Optical Fiber Mixers, Donald K. Jacob, Martin B. Mark, Bradley D. Duncan Nov 1995

Heterodyne Ladar System Efficiency Enhancement Using Single-Mode Optical Fiber Mixers, Donald K. Jacob, Martin B. Mark, Bradley D. Duncan

Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications

A theoretical performance analysis of a heterodyne ladar system incorporating a single-mode fiber receiver has been performed. For our purposes, the performance parameters of interest are the coupling and mixing efficiency of the ladar receiver, as they relate to the overall system carrier-to-noise ratio. For a receiver incorporating a single-mode fiber mixer, the received and local-oscillator fields are matched both spatially and temporally at the detector, yielding 100% mixing efficiency. We have therefore focused our efforts on determining an expression for the efficiency with which a diffuse return from a purely speckle target can be coupled into the receiving leg …

Intelligent Control Of Vehicles: Preliminary Results On The Application Of Learning Automata Techniques To Automated Highway System, Cem Unsal, John S. Bay, Pushkin Kachroo Nov 1995

Intelligent Control Of Vehicles: Preliminary Results On The Application Of Learning Automata Techniques To Automated Highway System, Cem Unsal, John S. Bay, Pushkin Kachroo

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

We suggest an intelligent controller for an automated vehicle to plan its own trajectory based on sensor and communication data received. Our intelligent controller is based on an artificial intelligence technique called learning stochastic automata. The automaton can learn the best possible action to avoid collisions using the data received from on-board sensors. The system has the advantage of being able to work in unmodeled stochastic environments. Simulations for the lateral control of a vehicle using this AI method provides encouraging results.

Aliasing Reduction In Staring Infrared Imagers Utilizing Subpixel Techniques, Joseph C. Gillette, Thomas M. Stadtmiller, Russell C. Hardie Nov 1995

Aliasing Reduction In Staring Infrared Imagers Utilizing Subpixel Techniques, Joseph C. Gillette, Thomas M. Stadtmiller, Russell C. Hardie

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We introduce and analyze techniques for the reduction of aliased signal energy in a staring infrared imaging system. A standard staring system uses a fixed two-dimensional detector array that corresponds to a fixed spatial sampling frequency determined by the detector pitch or spacing. Aliasing will occur when sampling a scene containing spatial frequencies exceeding half the sampling frequency. This aliasing can significantly degrade the image quality. The aliasing reduction schemes presented here, referred to as microscanning, exploit subpixel shifts between time frames of an image sequence. These multiple images are used to reconstruct a single frame with reduced aliasing. If …

Atomic Broadcast In Heterogeneous Distributed Systems, Osman Zeineldine Oct 1995

Atomic Broadcast In Heterogeneous Distributed Systems, Osman Zeineldine

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Communication services have long been recognized as possessing a dominant effect on both performance and robustness of distributed systems. Distributed applications rely on a multitude of protocols for the support of these services. Of crucial importance are multicast protocols. Reliable multicast protocols enhance the efficiency and robustness of distributed systems. Numerous reliable multicast protocols have been proposed, each differing in the set of assumptions adopted, especially for the communication network. These assumptions make each protocol suitable for a specific environment. The presence of different distributed applications that run on different LANs and single distributed applications that span different LANs mandate …

A method is presented for the application of binary-pair partitioned neural networks to the task of speaker verification. This technique is based on a previously developed neural network classifier for speaker identification.

The main focus of this research was the development and testing of the algorithms necessary to extend the binary-pair partitioning approach from speaker identification to speaker verification. The method is based on the development of a user profile which is obtained from discriminative data provided by the binary-pair partitioned neural networks.

Experimental results are provided which demonstrate the viability of this approach, using the TIMIT speech corpus for …

Safe Stratified Datalog With Integer Order Programs, Peter Revesz Sep 1995

Safe Stratified Datalog With Integer Order Programs, Peter Revesz

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

Guaranteeing termination of programs on all valid inputs is important for database applications. Termination cannot be guaranteed in Stratified Datalog with integer (gap)-order programs on generalized databases because they express any Turing-computable function. This paper introduces a restriction of those programs that can express only computable queries. The restricted language has a high expressive power and a non-elementary data complexity.

Non-Imaging Infrared Spectral Target Detection, Matthew R. Whiteley Sep 1995

Non-Imaging Infrared Spectral Target Detection, Matthew R. Whiteley

Theses and Dissertations

Automatic detection of time-critical mobile targets using spectral-only infrared radiance data is explored. A quantification of the probability of detection, false alarm rate, and total error rate associated with this detection process is provided. A set of classification features is developed for the spectral data, and these features are utilized in a Bayesian classifier singly and in combination to provide target detection. The results of this processing are presented and sensitivity of the class separability to target set, target configuration, diurnal variations, mean contrast, and ambient temperature estimation errors is explored. This work introduces the concept of atmospheric normalization of …
