Mayflower, Renova Basin, And South Boulder Creek Areas, Howard Nickelson Sep 1947

Mayflower, Renova Basin, And South Boulder Creek Areas, Howard Nickelson

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

In Montana at the turn of the century a great many men sought the riches buried in the earth's crust. Prospectors fanning out from Butte and other early Montana mining areas located veins at the Mayflower, Renova, and Gold Hill areas.

Geology Of The Renova-Bone Basin And Mayflower Mine Areas, R. L. Burns Sep 1947

Geology Of The Renova-Bone Basin And Mayflower Mine Areas, R. L. Burns

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

This report has been compiled from the data collected during the September, 1947, geologic field trip of the Montana School of Mines. The trip, under the direction of Dr. E. S. Perry, consisted of two weeks of field mapping and observation near Whitehall, Montana, and one week at the Montana School of Mines preparing this report.

A Geological Report On Several Localities In The Northwestern Tobacco Root Mountains, Rudi Forhan Sep 1947

A Geological Report On Several Localities In The Northwestern Tobacco Root Mountains, Rudi Forhan

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

To better acquaint seniors in Geology and mining with actual field practice, the Montana School of Mines offer a course in Geologic Field Mapping, during the three weeks preceding the opening of the fall semester. The first two weeks are spent in actual field mapping of the geologic formations near Whitehall, Montana, while the third week is spent back on the campus compiling data and finishing maps started in the field.

Geology And Mines Of The Upper Blackfoot Valley, Montana, Thomas K. Shea Jun 1947

Geology And Mines Of The Upper Blackfoot Valley, Montana, Thomas K. Shea

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The purchase and continued operation of the Mike Horse mine in the Heddleston district, by the American Smelting and Refining Company, gives the Blackfoot Valley a renewed promise of a prosperous future in its role as a mining district. In the past, large amounts of placer gold were recovered from the gulches of the area, however, because of the transportation facilities, only the upper portions of a few lodes were exploited by the early miners.

Rugose Corals Of The Madison Group, William R. Paine Jun 1947

Rugose Corals Of The Madison Group, William R. Paine

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

One of the best types of index fossils, and one which occurs most plentifully in the Madison group of formations in Montana, and yet, one which has been little studied, is the group of rugose, or cup, corals. Perhaps this group of fossils has not been studied in detail because their distinguishing characteristics are mainly internal, and laboratory preparation in the form of thin section or polished surfaces is necessary to bring out these characteristics.

Kibbey Sandstone In Montana, Glen Shean Jun 1947

Kibbey Sandstone In Montana, Glen Shean

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Much attention has recently been given, by geologists, to prolific water bearing horizon and a potential oil horizon, known as the Kibbey sandstone, which lies deeply buried under much of central Montana. In some localities the sandstone is dry, and its identification in cuttings from deep wells has in many cases proved difficult.

The Geology And Ore Deposits Of The Ruby Gulch Mine, Henry J. Roletto, John X. Combo May 1947

The Geology And Ore Deposits Of The Ruby Gulch Mine, Henry J. Roletto, John X. Combo

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The Ruby Gulch Mine, owned and operated by the Ruby Gulch Mining Company, Zortman, Montana, is one of the most important low-grade gold producers in the state. Situated in the Little Rocky Mountains, the mine has had an interesting history since its discovery shortly before the turn of the century.

Corrosion Testing Of Iron-Tin Alloys By The Salt Spray Method, Bernard T. Mcdonald May 1947

Corrosion Testing Of Iron-Tin Alloys By The Salt Spray Method, Bernard T. Mcdonald

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The purpose of this study was to determine the relative rate of corrosion of iron-tin alloys containing low percentages of tin. Since in the world today, a great deal of work is being done to develop large tin deposits and new methods devised to treat these ores, it is possible that the metal will become abundant and will obtain a more important position in the metal industry.

An Investigation Of A Particular Weldment Failure, Byron Clow May 1947

An Investigation Of A Particular Weldment Failure, Byron Clow

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Two sets of weld-test coupons, supposedly made under identical conditions, were submitted to this institution last year for approval and certification under the A.S.M.E. Welder's Qualification Code. The first set of coupons was unsatisfactory. The second set, made by the same operators one month later, was satisfactory.

The Corrosion Resistance Of Iron-Tin Compacts As Produced By Powder Metallurgy, Robert W. Gambill May 1947

The Corrosion Resistance Of Iron-Tin Compacts As Produced By Powder Metallurgy, Robert W. Gambill

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The art of Powder Metallurgy deals with the preparation of metal powders and their utilization. As a more pertinent definition, the following has been suggested: "Powder Metallurgy is the art of producing metal powders and shaped objects from individual, mixed, or alloyed metal powders, with or without the inclusion of non-metallic constituents".

Geology And Mineral Deposits Of Idaho: A Summary, Paul B. Bronken May 1947

Geology And Mineral Deposits Of Idaho: A Summary, Paul B. Bronken

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The great diversity on mineral wealth in Idaho establishes it as one of the principle mining states in the union. Mining first began in the state with the discovery of placer gold in the Pierce City district in 1861, and since that date has become one of the leading industries of the state.

Upper Cretaceous Sediment In Montana, Frank J. Frankovich May 1947

Upper Cretaceous Sediment In Montana, Frank J. Frankovich

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Cretaceous sediments in Montana record events during a period of unusual geologic interest. After a long period of extensive submergence of the area during Jurassic time, came a period of varying continental and marine deposition with consequent variations in the types of sediments laid down. A study of these variations, their extent, and their cause has been the primary object of this thesis.

Occurrence Of Native Copper Near Jefferson City, Montana, Terence G. Kirkland May 1947

Occurrence Of Native Copper Near Jefferson City, Montana, Terence G. Kirkland

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Sometime prior to 1870, a group of prospectors made what was believed to be a "rich strike' on one of the tributaries of Prickly Pear Creek in Jefferson County, Montana. Instead of striking it rich, they had uncovered a native copper deposit, worthless to them because of its limited extent and remote location, but now of much interest to the geologist, and to the mining engineer because of its possible commercial value.

Electro-Deposition Of Iron From A Chloride Bath, Charles W. Noon May 1947

Electro-Deposition Of Iron From A Chloride Bath, Charles W. Noon

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Iron was electro-deposited from a ferrous chloride bath. Studies were made of deposits formed when current density was varied, and finally when both current density and temperature were changed. An attempt was made to lay the ground work for a long range study of the chloride bath, and to determine the most simple conditions possible for obtaining a smooth, even, and thick deposit.

General Geology And Mines Of Northwestern Montana, Robert L. Sandvig May 1947

General Geology And Mines Of Northwestern Montana, Robert L. Sandvig

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The five counties discussed in this paper compose the northernmost and westernmost counties in Montana. On the eastern boundary are Glacier National Park and the Continental Divide; on the southern boundary are Missoula and Powell counties; Idaho lies on the southwestern and western side; and the Canadian border lies along the northern edge. The region is on the Pacific Ocean side of the Rocky Mountains. Three major rivers, the Clark Fork, the Flathead, and the Kootenai drain this area into the Columbia River.

The Problem Of The Tensleep Sandstone, George D. Mccarthy May 1947

The Problem Of The Tensleep Sandstone, George D. Mccarthy

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Sandstone is probably one of the most important groups of rocks in existence today. The economic importance of so insignificant a thing as a mass of sand grains grows with the true reality of the situation. By increasing our knowledge of grains of sand, or particles of sandstone in all their ramifications, it would undoubtedly reflect upon our everyday life by increasing commercial possibilities of an undeveloped natural resource of Montana.

Isopach Maps And Discussion Of The Ordovician And Devonian Of Montana And Adjacent Areas, Arden F. Blair May 1947

Isopach Maps And Discussion Of The Ordovician And Devonian Of Montana And Adjacent Areas, Arden F. Blair

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The intensive postwar search for new petroleum horizons has resulted in widespread prospecting in the northern Great Plains. No commercial production has as yet been derived from Ordovician or Devonian rocks in Montana, but the relatively few tests that have penetrated to critical depths have disclosed encouraging conditions which merit further consideration, especially in Devonian strata.
