(R1506) Generalized Cr3b Problem With Heterogeneous Primary And Secondary As Finite Straight Segment, Abdullah A. Ansari, K. R. Meena, K. Shalini
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The existence and stability of stationary points are investigated under the effects of heterogeneous primary having N-layers with different densities, radiating finite straight segment and the Coriolis as well as centrifugal forces in the frame of cr3bp. The equations of motion are determined with the help of which we evaluate five stationary points analytically as well as graphically, and examine their stability.

Improving The Success Of Non-Traditional Students In An Introductory Computing Course, Christine F. Reilly, Laura M. Grabowski, Gustavo Dietrich
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
This Work in Progress Research to Practice paper presents a redesign of an introduction to computing course at a public, minority serving institution in the United States with a majority of non-traditional students. The course redesign was motivated by the desire to improve the success of the students in this course and in the major. Active learning during class and required attendance were the major components of the course redesign. The course policies included flexibility for the occasional absences that are expected with non-traditional students. A comparison of student performance in the experimental and control sections indicated that the requirement …
Functional Mixed Data Clustering With Fourier Basis Smoothing, Ishmael Amartey
Functional Mixed Data Clustering With Fourier Basis Smoothing, Ishmael Amartey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Clustering is an important analytical technique that has proven to affect human life positively through its application in cancer research, market segmentation, city planning etc. In this time of growing technological systems, mixed data has seen another face of longitudinal, directional and functional attributes which is worth paying attention to and analyzing. Previous research works on clustering relied largely on the inverse weight technique and B-spline in smoothing data and assessing the performance of various clustering algorithms. In 1971, Gower proposed a method of clustering for mixed variable types which has been extended to include functional and directional variables by …
Anharmonic Vibrational Frequencies Of Water Borane And Associated Molecules, Brent R. Westbrook, Ryan C. Fortenberry
Anharmonic Vibrational Frequencies Of Water Borane And Associated Molecules, Brent R. Westbrook, Ryan C. Fortenberry
Faculty and Student Publications
Water borane (BH3 OH2 ) and borinic acid (BH2 OH) have been proposed as intermediates along the pathway of hydrogen generation from simple reactants: water and borane. However, the vibrational spectra for neither water borane nor borinic acid has been investigaged experimen-tally due to the difficulty of isolating them in the gas phase, making accurate quantum chemical predictions for such properties the most viable means of their determination. This work presents theoretical predictions of the full rotational and fundamental vibrational spectra of these two poten-tially application-rich molecules using quartic force fields at the CCSD(T)-F12b/cc-pCVTZ-F12 level with additional corrections included for …
Identification Of Phosphorous Loading Point Source Facilities To 303(D) Listed Nutrient Impaired Waters Through Watershed Delineation Using Arcgis For Life Cycle Assessment Applications, John Zimmerman
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The work done for this project is part of a larger “life cycle assessment (LCA) of novel electrochemical phosphorus recovery technology at the wastewater treatment plant and U.S. watershed scales” (Morrissey 2019). The goal of that LCA is to determine “environmental impacts of implementing electrochemical struvite recovery at the wastewater treatment plant, U.S watershed, and global scales” (Morrissey 2019). This project’s goal is to identify locations deemed more sensitive to eutrophication impacts. The results will be used as part of the life cycle inventory (LCI) accounting for geographically explicit phosphorus flows. The waters identified as impaired were sourced from the …

First Principle Studies Of The Effects Of Alkali-Metal Intercalation On Structural Transition From Black To Blue Phosphorene And The Adsorption Of N2h4 On Ws2 Layers., Md Rajib Khan Musa
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A comprehensive density functional theory calculation has been conducted to seek a potential structural transition from black to blue phosphorene layers, with a focus on the roles played by alkali-metal intercalation in black phosphorene/phosphorus. This study reveals that at sufficiently high Li concentration and specific, well-defined configurations, a phase transition from black to blue phosphorene can take place. The Li atoms intercalated in black phosphorene could act as a “catalyst” in the“reactive region” of the lone pair of P atoms, leading to a P-P bond breaking and, subsequently, a local structural transformation from an orthorhombic lattice to an assembly of …
Optimizing Mixed Reality Simulation To Support Stem Graduate Teaching Assistants In Developing Student-Centered Pedagogical Skills, Constance Doty
Optimizing Mixed Reality Simulation To Support Stem Graduate Teaching Assistants In Developing Student-Centered Pedagogical Skills, Constance Doty
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Physics graduate teaching assistants (GTA) often instruct student-centered lab and recitation sections at large universities, creating the opportunity to positively impact students. However, as STEM GTA professional development varies by institution and discipline, GTAs rarely receive feedback about their teaching. In K-12 teacher preparation, "microteaching", where a teacher teaches a lesson to peers acting as students, is used to provide feedback. Research has demonstrated benefits to microteaching in K-12 teacher and STEM GTA preparation, but practicing teachers find microteaching can lack authenticity. Recently, researchers have explored integrating technology, like simulation, in pedagogy training to provide a more authentic training experience. …

Natively Implementing Deep Reinforcement Learning Into A Game Engine, Austin Kincer
Natively Implementing Deep Reinforcement Learning Into A Game Engine, Austin Kincer
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Artificial intelligence (AI) increases the immersion that players can have while playing games. Modern game engines, a middleware software used to create games, implement simple AI behaviors that developers can use. Advanced AI behaviors must be implemented manually by game developers, which decreases the likelihood of game developers using advanced AI due to development overhead.
A custom game engine and custom AI architecture that handled deep reinforcement learning was designed and implemented. Snake was created using the custom game engine to test the feasibility of natively implementing an AI architecture into a game engine. A snake agent was successfully trained …

Development Of Bioaffinity Based Assays For Forensic Applications, Juliana Maria Agudelo Cano
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In the field of forensic science, body fluids are a major contributor of evidence in investigations. However, body fluids are usually used only for their genetic content, overlooking its unique composition of proteins and low-molecular-weight compounds that often serve as biomarkers in clinical diagnostics. This investigation aimed to develop simple, effective, and economical models that can be used to identify different attributes of the originator. The focus of this research was to develop biocatalytic cascades that could analyze body fluids by using UV-Vis spectroscopy. These models could be implemented in forensic settings, as well as in biometric authentications. The central …
Reliability Characterization Of A Low-K Dielectric Using Its Magnetoresistance As A Diagnostic Tool, Philip Alister Williams
Reliability Characterization Of A Low-K Dielectric Using Its Magnetoresistance As A Diagnostic Tool, Philip Alister Williams
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The introduction of low dielectric constant materials within the integrated circuit (IC) chip technology industry was a concerted effort to decrease the resistance-capacitance (RC) time delay inherent within the dielectric materials used as insulators. This stems from a demand for greater device density per IC chip and decreased feature sizes but is fast becoming a reliability issue. Concomitant with the demand for decreased feature sizes, also in adherence with Moore’s Law (which states that the number of devices on a die doubles every two years), is a reduction in device speed and performance due to device intra-level interconnection signal delays. …
The Contributions Of Dynamical And Diabatic Processes Preceding And Accompanying Major Greenland Ice-Melt Events, Scott Feldman
The Contributions Of Dynamical And Diabatic Processes Preceding And Accompanying Major Greenland Ice-Melt Events, Scott Feldman
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Extratropical cyclones and/or short-wave disturbances can reinforce Greenland blocking through upper-level flow amplification and can increase poleward heat and moisture transport into the Arctic. Increased poleward heat and moisture transport into the Arctic may enhance Greenland ice melt during the spring, summer, and fall months. The need to better understand the underlying dynamical and diabatic processes that may contribute to Greenland ice melt motivates this thesis. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate: 1) the role of advective warming due to poleward heat and moisture transport into the Arctic in facilitating Greenland ice melt, 2) the role of adiabatic …

The Impacts Of Transported Wildfire Smoke Aerosol On Surface Air Quality In New York State, Wei-Ting Hung
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In New York State (NYS), summertime long-range transported smoke plumes and high fine mode particulate matter (PM2.5) concentration during the smoke episodes have been reported. Since the frequency, intensity, and burned area of wildfires over Northern America have increased in recent years, the contribution of transported smoke aerosols to local air quality could become more significant. This study aimed to characterize the transport of smoke aerosols and quantify their impacts on the local air quality over NYS. A case study of a transported smoke event in mid-August of 2018 and multi-year analysis of the smoke cases during the summer seasons …

Image Data Analysis And Design Optimization Of The Snowball Chamber, Yujia Huang
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Dark Matter is the invisible massive particle that makes up over 26.8 percent of the mass-energy content of the universe. Weakly Interacting Massive Particles, or WIMPs, are one of the candidates of dark matter particles. Many scientists around the world are trying to figure out how to detect detect dark matter using either indirect search, direct production or direct detection experiments. However, due to the lack of evidence of finding WIMPs in direct detection experiments at a large mass scale, a call for investigating WIMPs at a lower mass range is attracting more attention.

Static And Dynamic Analysis In Cryptographic-Api Misuse Detection Of Mobile Application, Kunyang Li
Undergraduate Honors Theses
With Android devices becoming more advanced and gaining more popularity, the number of cryptographic-API misuses in mobile applications is escalating. Numerous snippets of code in Android are from Stack Overflow and over 90% of them contain several crypto-issues. Various crypto-misuse detectors come out aiming to report vulnerabilities of apps and better secure users’ privacy. These detectors can be broadly classified into two categories based on the analysis strategies employed to catch misuses – static analysis (i.e., by scanning the code base) and dynamic analysis (i.e., by executing the code). However, there are not enough research on comparing their underlying differences, …

Continuous Turbidity Data Used To Compute Constituent Concentrations In The South Loup River, Nebraska, 2017–18, David L. Rus, Brenda K. Densmore
United States Geological Survey: Water Reports and Publications
The South Loup River in central Nebraska has been impaired by bacteria since at least 2004, which has resulted in the river not meeting its intended use as a recreational waterway. As part of a strategy for reducing the bacterial load in the river, the United States Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Lower Loup Natural Resources District, made continuous estimates of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and nutrient concentrations during seasonal monitoring at the South Loup River at Saint Michael, Nebraska, during 2017–18. Continuous turbidity data were collected from mid-April through October in 2017 and 2018 …
Analysis Of Titan's Fluvial Features Using Numerical Modeling, Jeshurun Horton
Analysis Of Titan's Fluvial Features Using Numerical Modeling, Jeshurun Horton
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
River channels have been observed near the Huygens probe landing site on the surface of Titan, along with evidence of rounded water ice boulders transported through fluid flow. Evidence near the landing site suggests active flow of liquid methane, which has motivated the study of the effects of sediment load and channel sizes on Titan’s fluvial features. A numerical model is used to determine the viscosity, flow velocity, and critical boulder transport diameter based on channel size, slope, and a range of sediment concentrations. This model achieves two ends: first, observed boulder diameters are used to determine the ideal channel …
Contrastive Learning For Unsupervised Auditory Texture Models, Christina Trexler
Contrastive Learning For Unsupervised Auditory Texture Models, Christina Trexler
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Sounds with a high level of stationarity, also known as sound textures, have perceptually relevant features which can be captured by stimulus-computable models. This makes texture-like sounds, such as those made by rain, wind, and fire, an appealing test case for understanding the underlying mechanisms of auditory recognition. Previous auditory texture models typically measured statistics from auditory filter bank representations, and the statistics they used were somewhat ad-hoc, hand-engineered through a process of trial and error. Here, we investigate whether a better auditory texture representation can be obtained via contrastive learning, taking advantage of the stationarity of auditory textures to …
(R1524) The Existence And Uniqueness Of Solution For Fractional Newel-Whitehead-Segel Equation Within Caputo-Fabrizio Fractional Operator, Ali Khalouta
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we introduce and study the existence and uniqueness theorem of the solution for the fractional Newell-Whitehead-Segel equation within Caputo-Fabrizio fractional operator. Also, we propose a new numerical method known as natural reduced differential transform method (NRDTM) for solving this equation. We confirm our theoretical discussion with two numerical examples in order to achieve the validity and accuracy of the proposed method. The computations, associated with these examples, are performed by MATLAB software package.

(R1488) Transformation Of Glucokinase Under Variable Rate Constants And Thermal Conditions: A Mathematical Model, Mukhtar Ahmad Khanday, Roohi Bhat
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The glucokinase (GK) in cells plays a pivotal role in the regulation of carbohydrate metabolism and acts as a sensor of glucose. It helps us to control glucose levels during fast and food intake conditions through triggering shifts in metabolism or cell functions. Various forms of hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia occur due to the transformations of the gene of the Glucokinase. The mathematical modelling of enzyme dynamics is an emerging research area to serve its role in biological investigations. Thus, it is imperative to establish a mathematical model to understand the kinetics of native and denatured forms of enzyme-GK under thermal …

(R1464) Stability Of The Artificial Equilibrium Points In The Low-Thrust Restricted Three-Body Problem With Variable Mass, Amit Mittal, Krishan Pal, Pravata Kumar Behera, Deepak Mittal
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this article, we have investigated the existence and stability of the artificial equilibrium points (AEPs) in the low-thrust restricted three-body problem with variable mass. In this model of the low-thrust restricted three-body problem, we have considered both the primaries as point masses. The mass of the spacecraft varies with time according to Jeans’ law (1928). We have introduced a new concept for creating the AEPs in the restricted three-body problem with variable mass using continuous constant acceleration. We have derived the equations of motion of the spacecraft after using the space-time transformations of Meshcherskii. The AEPs have been created …
(R1494) Approximate Solutions Of The Telegraph Equation, Ilija Jegdić
(R1494) Approximate Solutions Of The Telegraph Equation, Ilija Jegdić
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper the initial boundary value problems for the linear telegraph equation in one and two space dimensions are considered. To find approximate solutions, a recently proposed optimization-free approach that utilizes artificial neural networks with one hidden layer is used, in which the connecting weights from the input layer to the hidden layer are chosen randomly and the weights from the hidden layer to the output layer are found by solving a system of linear equations. One of the advantages of this method, in comparison to the usual discretization methods for the two-dimensional linear telegraph equation, is that this …

We report the first discovery of a transiting circumbinary planet detected from a single sector of Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) data. During Sector 21, the planet TIC 172900988b transited the primary star and then five days later it transited the secondary star. The binary is itself eclipsing, with a period P ≈ 19.7 days and an eccentricity e ≈ 0.45. Archival data from ASAS-SN, Evryscope, KELT, and SuperWASP reveal a prominent apsidal motion of the binary orbit, caused by the dynamical interactions between the binary and the planet. A comprehensive photodynamical analysis of the TESS, archival and follow-up data …

We present the discovery of a transiting mini-Neptune around TOI-1201, a relatively bright and moderately young early M dwarf (J ≈ 9.5 mag, ~600–800 Myr) in an equal-mass ~8 arcsecond-wide binary system, using data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, along with follow-up transit observations. With an orbital period of 2.49 d, TOI-1201 b is a warm mini-Neptune with a radius of Rb = 2.415 ± 0.090 R⊕. This signal is also present in the precise radial velocity measurements from CARMENES, confirming the existence of the planet and providing a planetary mass of Mb = …

We present the discovery of a highly irradiated and moderately inflated ultrahot Jupiter, TOI-1431b/MASCARA-5 b (HD 201033b), first detected by NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite mission (TESS) and the Multi-site All-Sky Camera (MASCARA). The signal was established to be of planetary origin through radial velocity measurements obtained using SONG, SOPHIE, FIES, NRES, and EXPRES, which show a reflex motion of K = 294.1 ± 1.1 m s⁻¹. A joint analysis of the TESS and ground-based photometry and radial velocity measurements reveals that TOI-1431b has a mass of Mp = 3.12 ± 0.18 MJ (990 ± 60 M⊕ …
