The Effects Of Temperature, Flooding, And Goose Feces Addition On Greenhouse Gas Emissions And Ammonification In Four High-Latitude Soils From Western Alaska, Jenna M. Ross Jan 2024

The Effects Of Temperature, Flooding, And Goose Feces Addition On Greenhouse Gas Emissions And Ammonification In Four High-Latitude Soils From Western Alaska, Jenna M. Ross

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The large carbon (C) stock of wetlands is vulnerable to climate change, especially in high latitudes that are warming at a disproportional rate. Likewise, low-elevation Arctic coastal areas will flood more frequently under climate change and sea-level rise, which may alter goose herbivory and fecal deposition patterns if geese move inland. While temperature, flooding, and feces impact soil C emissions, their interactive effects have been rarely studied. Here, I explore the impact of these interactions on CO2 and CH4 emissions and nitrogen (N) mineralization (ammonification) in soils collected from four plant communities in the Yukon-Kuskokwim (Y-K) Delta, a high latitude …

Changes In Values And Perception Of Life: Natural Disaster Devastates A Mountain Community, Sharifullah Baig, Abida Begum

Professional Development Centre, Gilgit

The mountain communities of Karakorum and the Himalayas in Pakistan are frequently experiencing climate change-induced natural disasters, which are inflicting irreparable losses to their generation's old value system and socio-economic life. Focusing on the value system, this small-scale study explored the change in values and perceptions of a disaster-affected mountain community about natural hazards and its implications for their future lives. Twenty participants from the affected community, including local political activists, religious leaders, teachers, and youth activists, were thoroughly interviewed. The study explored significant deviations from their traditional values of connectedness to each other and with their ancestors' land. The …

The Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE) is a satellite mission that has been in orbit since 2003. The primary instrument on ACE is a Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) that records infrared atmospheric transmittance spectra in the limb geometry using the Sun as a light source. Version 5 of ACE-FTS data processing contains improved volume mixing ratio (VMR) profiles for 46 molecules and 24 isotopologues, including HFC-32 (CH2F2) and HOCl as new routine data products. VMR trends for each of the 46 molecules are reported for regions of atmospheric interest. Specifically, the longevity of the ACE mission has …

Exploring Women`S Perceptions Of Climate Change Impact On Agriculture, Health & Food Security In Upper Hunza, Gilgit Baltistan, Ambreen, Elina Nizar Ali, Taiba Yar Baig, Fozia Parveen

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

The Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region, renowned for its towering mountains and major river basins, sustains nearly 1.4 billion people worldwide and is pivotal to global food production. Glacial melt from the HKH region nourishes agriculture, livestock, and horticulture, supporting the livelihoods of mountain communities. However, climate change is accelerating the melting of glaciers, and shifts in wet seasons significantly impact food security in these communities. Sectors such as water resources, agricultural land, and human health, particularly women’s health, are significantly affected by these changes. For centuries, agriculture has been the backbone of Gilgit-Baltistan’s economy, with over 70% of livelihoods …

Quantifying chemical erosion in the lithologically-heterogenous Appalachian Valley and Ridge

Amelia J. Zanoni

The interplay between physical and chemical erosion is well understood in landscapes underlain by a uniform rock type, but many regions are underlain by a mixture of rock types with varying erosion resistance and solubility. We used measurements of stream-water chemistry to estimate chemical erosion rates in the Appalachian Valley and Ridge, a region where the mechanisms of lithologic control over topography are poorly understood. Newly acquired stream water samples were collected from 51 locations across the research area during the Fall of 2023. The sampled waters …

Using A Combination Technique Of Two Computational Methods To Solve The Integro-Differential Equation, Junaid Idrees Mustafa, Ahmed Farooq Qasim

Al-Qadisiyah Journal of Pure Science

The present paper investigates a mathematical technique for determining nonlinear integro-differential equations that is based on a combination of the Bownds and Range-Kutta methods. There will be a discussion of what is meant by this class of nonlinear Fredholm equations, as well as an explanation of the mathematical method for this kind of equation. The Bownds technique is used to produce the differential equations from the integral equation obtained from the integro-differential equations. Then, the approximate solution of the differential equation(s) is derived by applying the Range-Kutta method. Through solving three different examples, we prove that the combination of mathematical …

Interpolation In Non-Continuous Functions Spaces, Jawad K. Judy

Al-Qadisiyah Journal of Pure Science

In this research I will introduce a new method to an approximation in non-continuous functions space and estimate a degree of this approximation (Note that this function must be bounded) by define a new norm depending on union it together with a continuous function (I call it the compensation function) where the resulting functions from this union must be a continuous. This is possible for any continuous function but in this papers I will choose this function as an algebraic polynomial because our know of properties of polynomials in approximation theory Specifically, I will choose it as an interpolation polynomial …

Al-Qadisiyah Journal of Pure Science

Background: The immune response to tuberculosis infection involves the activation of many immune cells and the production of cytokines such as IL-1β. IL-1β is thought to be crucial for the immune system's reaction to TB. Production of IL-1β from infected lung cells by M. tuberculosis draws and activates immune cells including macrophages and T cells to the infection location. Then, these immune cells go to work containing and getting rid of the germs.

Aim of the study: To assess the impact of Interleukin 1beta (IL-1β) in Iraqi patients with pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis.

Patients and methods: The patient’s group includes …
