In 1971 the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) created the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Program for the purpose of promoting rational use of the earth's resources. Formal involvement by the U.S. began in 1974. By 1976, 28 biosphere reserves had been selected in the U.S., including Big Bend National Park (BBNP) (Fig. 1). The purpose of this 2-volume report was to provide an interdisciplinary reference volume of literature citations for BBNP and the surrounding Chihuahuan Desert, and to provide a synopsis of research completed at BBNP.

Laser Levelling Land For Flood Irrigation, M D. Green, J. P. Middlemas
Laser Levelling Land For Flood Irrigation, M D. Green, J. P. Middlemas
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Since the introduction of laser levelling to Western Australia's South-West irrigation area five years ago, many farmers have benefited from this new and precise method of land-forming.
The use of lasser controlled earthmoving equipment to redevelop irrigated paddocks has led to improved irrigation efficiency and drainage. Less water is used for each irrigation, water is applied more evenly and less labour is needed. many older, grass-dominated paddocks have been reseeded to improve pasture species.
Eradicating Fruit Fly From Carnarvon, Kingsley Thomas Fisher
Eradicating Fruit Fly From Carnarvon, Kingsley Thomas Fisher
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Late last year the Mediteranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata Weidemann) was eradicated from Canarvon, Western Australia by using an intergrated programme of sterile insect releases and bait spraying.
The eradication marked the end of a four-year study on the use and effectiveness of the Sterile Insect Technique, a biological control technique which uses an insect pest against itself. such a study can be used as a basis for treating other threatening insect pests, such as the serious cattle pest screw-worm fly, should they be found in Asustralia.
Being a biological control method, the Sterile Insect Technique is an exellent …
Water Quality For Irrigation, P R. George
Water Quality For Irrigation, P R. George
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Although irrigation and salinity problems are frequently inseperable, there is a range of management methods that can be used to handle marginal quality water. Freuently these methods are simple, but require careful planning.
The wide range in tolerance of crops to salinity can be exploiter to ensure that appropriate crops are selected for the water available.
Because crops vary in their sensitivity to salt uptake in the leaves or the roots, watering methods can be changed to avoid problems. For profitable production enough water should be applied to ensure adequate water is available for plant growth as well as to …
Salinity Control In Northern China, G A. Robertson
Salinity Control In Northern China, G A. Robertson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
China has vast areas of saline land, perhaps as much as six million hectares. Some of this saline land is a result of marine influence in coastal areas and some is the resultof soil formation in areas with saline geological deposits and inadequate rainfall to leach out the salts at that time.
However, most saline soils in China are as a result of secondary salinisation processess induced by a hydrological imbalance resulting from over-clearing of the land or irrigation. This imbalance has produced rising watertables bringing the salt closer to the soil surface.
In this article, G..A. Robertson, Commissioner …
Residual Values Of Australian Rock Phosphates, Michael D A Bolland
Residual Values Of Australian Rock Phosphates, Michael D A Bolland
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
For years superphosphate has been the cheapest, convenient and most effective way of supplying phosphorus to newly cleared soils in Western Australia's South-West that are acutely deficient in phosphorus. However its effectiveness as a phosphorus source falls markedly after application. Regular applications are needed to maintaine profitable pastures and crops on these soils.
After a big jump in supperphosphate prices in the mid 970s, researchers tested the use of Australian rock phosphates as potentially cheaper alternative phosphorus fertilisers to superphosphate. On the none-leaching sands, as this article shows, none of the rock phosphates was as effective for plant growth as …

Manual: Measurement Of Evapotranspiration By The Bowen Ratio Energy Balance Method, Joon Kim, Shashi Verma
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
The Bowen ratio energy balance method has been widely used by many researchers to estimate the fluxes of water vapor and sensible heat between crops and atmosphere. The energy balance for the crop canopy can be expressed as Rn + G + H + LE + PS + M = 0 (1) where Rn is net radiation, G is soil surface heat flux, H is sensible heat flux and LE is latent heat flux.

Soils And The Location Of Cacao Orchards At A Maya Site In Western Belize, Daniel R. Muhs, Robert R. Kautz, J. Jefferson Mackinnon
Soils And The Location Of Cacao Orchards At A Maya Site In Western Belize, Daniel R. Muhs, Robert R. Kautz, J. Jefferson Mackinnon
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Cacao was one of the most important crops of the lowland Maya. Ethnohistoric sources document that the Postclassic-Colonial Period Maya settlement of Tipu in western Belize was an important cacao-growing center, yet evidence of where the cacao was grown is not apparent. We analysed the suitability of floodplain, terrace, and bedrock soils for cacao cultivation. Our results indicate that the soils most likely to have been used for cacao growth were those on the modem floodplain of the Macal River, based on their suitable physical and chemical properties. In addition, buried stone walls of Late Classic or Postclassic age that …
An Evaluation Of Uranium-Series Dating Of Fossil Echinoids From Southern California Pleistocene Marine Terraces, Daniel R. Muhs, Los Angeles County Museum Of Natural History, Los Angeles, Ca
An Evaluation Of Uranium-Series Dating Of Fossil Echinoids From Southern California Pleistocene Marine Terraces, Daniel R. Muhs, Los Angeles County Museum Of Natural History, Los Angeles, Ca
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Fossil sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus) from Pleistocene marine terraces on the southern California Channel Islands have been dated by the uranium-series method in order to test the suitability of echinoids for dating marine terraces. Results indicate that urchin plates and spines do not behave as closed systems with respect to both uranium and thorium. Calculated ages based on these data do not agree with uranium-series ages (120,000 and 127,000 yrs) obtained previously from corals from the same localities. Thus, fossil sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus) are not considered suitable for uranium-series dating of Pleistocene marine terrace deposits.

The Green Movement: Implications For Animals, Ronnie Z. Hawkins
The Green Movement: Implications For Animals, Ronnie Z. Hawkins
Environment Collection
The Green movement, a newly emerging political movement that is both global in scope and firmly anchored to each local region at the grassroots level, is destined to be of great import to those concerned with the status of nonhuman animals in our society. Closely allied with deep ecology and bioregionalism, Green thinking embodies an alteration in our perception of the human organism: no longer seen as separate from and superior to all the other components of the ecosystem, our species is placed in context as one among many interdependent forms of life, with the attainment of a sustainable balance …

Sex-Specific Feeding Habits Of Brown-Headed Cowbirds In Northern Ohio In January, Richard A. Dolbeer, Cynthia R. Smith
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
We examined the stomach contents of 57 brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater) collected from a roost in Erie Co., Ohio, on 12 January 1983. Corn was by far the predominant food, averaging 66% of the stomach contents by weight. Seeds from at least five grasses, but primarily Setaria spp., were the second most abundant food category, averaging 21% of the stomach contents. Ragweed {Ambrosia artemisiifolia) seeds (2.6%) were third. Male cowbirds consumed more corn than did the smaller females, whereas females consumed more of the smaller grass seeds. The abundance of corn in harvested fields and feedlots, combined with mild winter …

Analysis Of Arkansas Fur Harvest Records - 1942-1984: Iii. Harvest-Price Relationships, Joseph D. Clark, Gary A. Heidt, Tina Sheldon, James H. Peck
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Correlation and linear regression analyses between mean annual pelt price and total harvest of 13 Arkansas furbearer species between 1965 and 1983 were performed for state and regions (Ozark Mountains, Ouachita Mountains, Gulf Coastal Plain, and Mississippi Delta). Statewide, strong correlations (r > 0.80) were identified for bobcat (Felis rufus), coyote (Canis latrans), gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus), mink (Mustela vison), nutria (Myocastor coypus), opossum (Didelphis virginiana), and raccoon (Procyonlotor). Moderate correlations (r = 0.55 - 0.79) were identified for eastern spotted skunk (Spilogale putorius), muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus), river otter (Lutra canadensis), and striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis). Nonsignificant correlations (r < 0.468) were shown for beaver (Castor canadensis) and long-tailed weasel (Mustela frenata). Regional differences were noted for each species.

The Inapplicability Of The Concept Of The "Sidney Gravel" To The Ogallala Group (Late Tertiary) In Part Of Southern Banner County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
A series of geologic maps of counties in western Nebraska was prepared for the Nebraska Geological Survey during the mid-1 930s. These maps showed the distribution of rock units of Tertiary age including a formation designated as the “Sidney.” The Sidney Gravel was described as a widespread sheetlike complex of channel deposits, but with small areas where it is not developed. In southern Banner County, Nebraska, there are several channels filled with sand and gravel that were mapped as Sidney in this series. Recently one of these channel fills has been observed to cut across the other. The fills are …

Characteristics, Age Relationships, And Regional Importance Of Some Cenozoic Paleovalleys, Southern Nebraska Panhandle, Robert F. Diffendal Jr., James B. Swinehart, J. J. Gottula
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Few workers have reported previously on features of ancient valleys in western Nebraska. Six sites in the southern Nebraska Panhandle, ranging in age from Oligocene to Middle to Late Pleistocene, illustrate the characteristics and variability of Cenozoic paleovalleys. The dimensions of these paleovalleys vary from less than 0.1 km to more than 1.0 km in width and from less than 1.0 km to more than 100 km in length. Relief is as much as 35 m in outcrop. Four of the examples have valley sides that are nearly vertical. Potholes and other scour features occur at one site. Remnants of …

A Case Study In Maritime Boundary Delimitation: The Gulf Of Maine Dispute, Herbert D. Frerichs Jr.
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The Gulf of Maine area, including Georges Bank, has long been regarded as an area of special interest and importance to United States' fishermen. The riches of Georges Bank were known to New England fishermen in the 18th century, and early in the 19th century, fishermen from Gloucester, Massachusetts developed the halibut fishery on the Bank. Through the 19th century and util the 1950's the Georges Bank fishery was exclusively the province of new England fishermen. However, in the 1960's large factory fleets from the Soviet Union and Japan began to invade the waters of Georges Bank. The wave of …

The Trinidad And Tobago/Venezuela Fishing Agreement, Zaleena K. Chin-Yuen-Kee
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The twin-island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago is situated adjacent to the Republic Of Venezuela such that at one point Trinidad is merely seven miles off the northeast coast of Venezuela. Fishing activities of nationals of each country in the waters of the other are therefore common and often lead to conflict. In an attempt to solve the fishing problem a fishing agreement was negotiated. It came into force in 1978 and expired in 1984 whereupon negotiations commenced once more in an attempt to achieve new accord. The fishing industries of both countries and the conflicts which led to the …

Cooperatives: Their Effectiveness And Limitations For Small-Scale Fisheries Development, Hiroaki Yonesaka
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Increased experience in fisheries cooperatives of developing countries has called into question a long-held presumption about their desirability and feasibility. In this context, this study attempts to reformulate the cooperative approach for small-scale fisheries in a realistic policy framework. First, past failures of fisheries cooperatives are analyzed from three different angles: the uniqueness of the fishing industry, systems intrinsic to the cooperative, and development policy. Second, various possibilities of building viable cooperatives are explored by introducing two key concnpets: the strategic option and the operational option. On the one hand, the strategic option implies that it is imperative to integrate …
