Technological Status And Legal/Regulatory Aspects Of Low-Head Hydroelectric Power Development In Missouri, Charles Darwin Morris, Gordon E. Weiss Oct 1980

Technological Status And Legal/Regulatory Aspects Of Low-Head Hydroelectric Power Development In Missouri, Charles Darwin Morris, Gordon E. Weiss

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

This paper will present the broad overview of hardware availability, systems design and 1egal/regulatory constraints presently connected with the development of small hydropower systems in water rich areas such as southeastern Missouri. There is great interest being evidenced today on the part of major federal agencies and some power companies in regard to the feasibility of utilization of the power potential inherent in small streams. The topic is of particular interest to Missourians because of the vast number of small streams present in Missouri.

Energy And Economic Development, Steven Skeet Chang Oct 1980

Energy And Economic Development, Steven Skeet Chang

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The paper sets out to examine the impact of energy crisis on the world economy in general and the less developed countries (LDCs) in particular. To clearly and fully understand the economic problems confronting LDCs in the era of energy shortage, it is necessary to formulate a general structural theory of economic development. A more comprehensive multidimensional indicator of economic development should also be constructed to measure the industrialization of the LDCs under study.

The Gloom Gets Doomier, David A. Summers Oct 1980

The Gloom Gets Doomier, David A. Summers

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

This paper reviews the likely sources of energy in the year 1990. Economic conditions, difficult to forecast, affect short-term consumption, while technological breakthroughs, equally impossible to predict, will control long-term production of energy. For the ten-year period, however, commitments to construction, or feasibility studies, must already be in hand. This allows a prediction of the energy supply for that year, and such a prediction is made. Because this indicates that only about 1 percent growth in supply can occur over this time period, against a requirement for at least 2 percent, the forecast is doomier than it was in earlier …

Energetics Of Moving Magnetic Waves, Tom Day Oct 1980

Energetics Of Moving Magnetic Waves, Tom Day

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Magnetism has had a certain and specific appeal of human inquiry for at least the past forty centuries of civilization. History is full of adventures into the unknowns about this natural phenomenon. Recent findings hint of a hidden physical world concerning magnetism which prompts continued exploration. Curvilinear motion on a continuous basis can be detected within a magnetic field consisting of large, slow moving spiral wave patterns. This paper presents a procedure whereby the reader can establish his or her own findings about the power and energy of magnetic conductance. Avenues of basic research are explored and discussed.

Determination Of Washability And Flotation Characteristics Of Important Missouri Coal Seams, Hayri Erten Oct 1980

Determination Of Washability And Flotation Characteristics Of Important Missouri Coal Seams, Hayri Erten

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Most of the 14 workable coal seams in the State of Missouri are considered to be high in ash and sulfur contents and need beneficiation in order to meet customer and Environmental Protection Agency requirements. If proper beneficiation methods can be designed, more Missouri coal will be mined and used within the state.

The objectives of this research are (1) to draw the washability curves of important Missouri coal seams in order to determine their washability characteristics, and (2) to determine the flotation characteristics of the same seams.

Tests conducted on 20 samples taken from Bevier, Croweburg, Mulky, and Summit …

The Economics Of Metals Recovery From Power Plant Fly Ash Via The Ames Hichlor Process, S. J. Weiss, G. Burnet, C. Y. Chang Oct 1980

The Economics Of Metals Recovery From Power Plant Fly Ash Via The Ames Hichlor Process, S. J. Weiss, G. Burnet, C. Y. Chang

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The disposal of potentially hazardous coal wastes is becoming a significant problem for the payer industry. The Ames HiChlor process, which utilizes paver plant fly ash as a source of aluminun, is proposed as a method of coal waste utilization. In the HiChlor process fly ash is chlorinated in the presence of a carbonaceous reduct ant at 700 to 900°C to produce alumnum chloride and titaniun tetrachloride as salable products. An economic analysis for a plant vhich would process 6,000 tons per day of fly ash is presented. Conditions under which the proposed process will prove profitable are discussed.

Acid Precipitation: The Coal Legacy In The Upper Midwest, Dennis M. Richter

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Increased use of coal in industry and utilities has resulted in acid precipitation associated with SOx and NOx emissions. The resultant aquatic and terrestial problems, and their solutions, are of considerable concern to the upper Midwest states.

The Energy Conservation And Safety Dilemma, Burns E. Hegler Oct 1980

The Energy Conservation And Safety Dilemma, Burns E. Hegler

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Since the beginning of the energy crisis, efforts to conserve energy often have seemed to be diametrically opposed to the precepts of safety. This is true if conservation is not planned and conducted properly. However, energy and safety can be quite compatible and may work to their mutual advantage if effectively managed.

Managing In An Energy Scarce Environment, John Amos Oct 1980

Managing In An Energy Scarce Environment, John Amos

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Present engineering management principles, operations research techniques, and economic theories were mainly developed dealing with only one scarce resource -- capital. Today, the engineer manager must consider another scarce resource -- energy. In the past, energy was never considered a major factor; i.e., equipment was considered a good investment if labor was reduced, regardless of energy cost. Many other managerial decisions are similar; therefore, the engineer manager must understand why many decisions based on traditional techniques may be misleading. The engineer manager must now utilize more complex engineering management techniques instead of evaluating only one factor or using rules of …

Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage: A Cost And Sizing Study, Haur D. Shaw, J. Derald Morgan, Max Darwin Anderson Oct 1980

Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage: A Cost And Sizing Study, Haur D. Shaw, J. Derald Morgan, Max Darwin Anderson

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Two applications for superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) devices in power systems are studied. One is for peak shaving, and the other is for load leveling. Consideration is given to placing these devices near load centers to reduce the line losses. For (SMES) cases studied using smaller size devices at several load centers, the line losses are lowered. However, the efficiency of SMES is proportional to its size, and the capitol cost per MWH is much greater for a smaller size SMES unit when compared to a larger SMES unit. Once the location or locations for SMES have been selected, …

Distribution Of Trace Elements In A Warm Water Release Impoundment, J. Nix Oct 1980

Distribution Of Trace Elements In A Warm Water Release Impoundment, J. Nix

Technical Reports

A detailed water quality survey (including trace metals) was conducted on DeGray Reservoir in south west Arkansas from 1969 through 1975. The results of this investigation are used to describe physical and chemical processes which affect the concentration of many of the constituents found in the reservoir and river system. Detailed dissolved oxygen profiles as well as turbidity (% transmittance) profiles were useful in delineating the movement of water through the reservoir. Underflows, innerflows, and overflows were observed during different seasons. The development of a metalimnetic dissolved oxygen minima appears to be related to advective transport within the metalimnion. Metalimnetic …

Epizootic Of Coccidiosis In Free-Flying Lesser Scaup, R. M. Windingstad, M. E. Mcdonald, L. N. Locke, S. M. Kerr, J. A. Sinn Oct 1980

Epizootic Of Coccidiosis In Free-Flying Lesser Scaup, R. M. Windingstad, M. E. Mcdonald, L. N. Locke, S. M. Kerr, J. A. Sinn

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

A coccidiosis epizootic has occurred in lesser scaup (Aythsa affinis) at Bluestem Reservoir in eastern Nebraska during the spring in each of three recent years: 1976-1978. Losses peaked during the period from mid-March through April. As much as 29 % of the peak population of scaup using the reservoir died. Necropsies of 72 of the nearly 1390 scaup that died revealed destruction and sloughing of the intestinal mucosa and associated hemorrhaging. Fibrinonecrotic cores were frequently found in the intestinal lumens. Scrapings from the intestinal mucosal contained massive numbers of oocysts of the coccidian Eimeria aythyae. This is …

An Analysis Of Residential Water Demand Schedules In Arkansas, Richard K. Ford, Joseph A. Zieger Oct 1980

An Analysis Of Residential Water Demand Schedules In Arkansas, Richard K. Ford, Joseph A. Zieger

Technical Reports

Water has held man's interest for centuries, and a considerable body of knowledqe has been developed about this subject, but it has only been considered only recently by decision makers in an economic sense. Because water is required to sustain life, the thought of its being an economic good to individuals has not been considered applicable or "fair" by those individuals who are concerned with its acquisition and distribution. Moreover, water has been in fairly abundant supply relative to demand for most of the country. However, as this situation is upset by increases in population and water use, a realization …

Shoreline Erosion In Virginia, C. Scott Hardaway Jr., Gary L. Anderson Oct 1980

Shoreline Erosion In Virginia, C. Scott Hardaway Jr., Gary L. Anderson

Reports

Virginia has over 5,000 miles of tidal shoreline. Several different shore types occur in the Tidewater region including the low-lying barrier islands of the Eastern Shore, the ocean front headland-barrier spit of southeastern Virginia, and the shores of the Chesapeake Bay and other estuaries which range from high bluffs to tidal marshes. In order to put shore erosion in proper perspective as a natural phenomenon, one must examine the recent geologic history of the region.

Much of shoreline erosion is a direct product of high energy storms like hurricanes and northeasters. The rate and amount of erosion along a specific …

Epa Profile Of Environmental Quality Nebraska, Kathleen Q. Camin

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri, which make up EPA Region VII, are among the leading corn and wheat producing States in the Nation_ These States also produce a significant share of the soybean, grain sorghum, fat cattle, and finished hogs that are supplied to American and foreign markets.

Although the States in Region VII can best be characterized as rural, 65 percent of their nearly 12 million people live in urban areas. In Nebraska, metropolitan areas such as Omaha 4 have environmental problems resulting from major industrial operations, municipal services, transportation, and energy production. Metropolitan areas, however, do not have …

Effect Of Fish Size On Prey Size Selection In Gambusia Affinis, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Joseph J. Cech Jr., James Compton Sep 1980

Effect Of Fish Size On Prey Size Selection In Gambusia Affinis, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Joseph J. Cech Jr., James Compton

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Food size selection of the mosquitofish , Gambusia affinis affinis. was measured in aquaria using juvenile stages of the mosquito, Clllex tarsalb;, as prey. Fish size varied from recently born fry to large adult females. Food size selection was positively correlated with fish size. Mosquitofish fry (6-8 111m standard length) attacked and ate primarily first and second instar larvae. Fry attacked larger instars, but attack success on these was low (0 - 50%). Fish larger than 20 mm attached primarily pupae and third and fourth instar larva. No first instar mosquitoes were eaten. Attack success for these fish was above …

Mass Marking Of Mosquitofish: Preliminary Results, Bruce Vondracek, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Joseph J. Cech Jr. Sep 1980

Mass Marking Of Mosquitofish: Preliminary Results, Bruce Vondracek, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Joseph J. Cech Jr.

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Three marking techniques were tested to determine their applicability for mosquitofish. Tetracycline drugs and DC Ar administered in the diet successfully marked laboratory-cultured mosquitofish, but exposure to direct sunlight in outdoor tanks resulted in the rapid disappearance of the marks. Preliminary data on fluorescent marks from a polystyrene pigment in a melamine-sulfonamide-formaldehyde resin forced into the dermal ,tissue with compressed air are more promising.

A t an optimal deliver pressure of 7.3 m Hg (140 p.s.i.) and spraying time of 15 sec., marking percentage is maximized and fish mortality is minimized. Mark retention time was up to 80 days in …

A Five Year Water Research Plan For The State Of Arkansas, Robert E. Babcock Aug 1980

A Five Year Water Research Plan For The State Of Arkansas, Robert E. Babcock

Technical Reports

The present economy and quality of life in Arkansas have largely been determined by our natural resources and the way they have been used. Likewise, insuring a sound economic future and a healthful environment in the state will depend on the efficiency and the wisdom with which nature's gifts are managed in the future. As the state's population grows and places new demands on finite resources, the need for effective resource management becomes increasingly critical. Often, a history of plenty can lead to the belated recognition of emerging resource problems. In Arkansas, such is the case with the state's water …

Water Quality Aspects Of Coal Transportation By Slurry Pipeline, James W. Moore Aug 1980

Water Quality Aspects Of Coal Transportation By Slurry Pipeline, James W. Moore

Technical Reports

The research program was designed to accomplish three major objectives. These were tot 1) identify and characterize the water quality changes that will occur as a result of the movement of western coal by slurry pipeline; 2) determine the feasibility of utilizing poor (impaired) quality water, such as municipal and industrial effluents, as the slurry medium, and: 3) determine the treatment measures applicable for restoring the slurry wastewater quality to acceptable levels, if required. The focus of the research program was generic rather than specific for any particular pipeline. Consequently, the emphasis was on establishing general ranges of data rather …

Technical And Legal Considerations Immanent In The Disposal Of Commercial Nuclear Waste, Margaret D. Davidson Aug 1980

Technical And Legal Considerations Immanent In The Disposal Of Commercial Nuclear Waste, Margaret D. Davidson

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

There is, currently, a flurry of activity as the present Administration, along with the United States Department of Energy and the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, struggles to develop a comprehensive national program for the management and disposal of radioactive wastes. The first section of the paper deals with some of the inherent technical issues. This includes a review of the origin of nuclear wastes; the hazards of the wastes, including impacts upon the biological environment; and the extent of the state of the art for disposing of such wastes. The second section is an attempt to review the scope …

B771: Long-Time Series Temperature And Precipitation Records For Maine, 1808-1978, William R. Baron, David C. Smith, Harold W. Borns Jr., James Fastook, Anne E. Bridges

Bulletins

The purpose of this Bulletin is to reconstruct a series of long run temperature and precipitation instrumental records for Maine (monthly means and accumulations). We hope that the data tables and graphs produced here will be of use to climatologists and other researchers and to Maine residents who are interested in the climatic history of the state. To aid in reconstruction, regional records were formed by grouping records from several geographical locations.

Much of the data reproduced here have been published elsewhere in a wide variety of publications. Some are found easily in libraries while others are not readily available. …
