Hydrogeologic And Geochemical Investigation Of The Boone-St. Joe Limestone Aquifer In Benton County, Arkansas, Albert E. Ogden
Hydrogeologic And Geochemical Investigation Of The Boone-St. Joe Limestone Aquifer In Benton County, Arkansas, Albert E. Ogden
Technical Reports
The Boone-St. Joe limestone aquifer is an important unconfined aquifer for rural residents of Benton County, Arkansas. Pumping tests indicate a large range in production capability of the aquifer. The coefficient of transmissibility and specific capacity range from 24.8 to 24640 gpd/ft and 0.03 to 30 gpm/ft, respectively. No statistical relationship at a = 0.10 was found between each of these parameters and photo-lineament proximity. Drillers' estimated well yield (gpm) also showed no relationship to photo-lineament proximity. It is therefore concluded that choosing well sites along photo-lineaments for higher production is not as reliable for karstified carbonate aquifers such as …

Rare, Threatened And Endangered Vascular Plants In Oregon: An Interim Report, Jean L. Siddall, Kenton L. Chambers, David H. Wagner
Institute for Natural Resources Publications
This report on rare, threatened and endangered vascular plants in Oregon is a basic document in the process of inventorying the state's natural areas * Prerequisite to the orderly establishment of natural preserves for research and conservation in Oregon are (1) a classification of the ecological types, and (2) a listing of the special organisms, which should be represented in a comprehensive system of designated natural areas. The necessary ecological classification was published in the U.S. Forest Service Pacific Northwest Forest and Range Experiment Station document, "Research Natural Area Needs in the Pacific Northwest," by Dyrness et al. (1975). This …

The Effects Of Sewage Pollution Abatement On Phytoplankton Productivity And Standing Crop In Hillsborough Bay, Florida, City Of Tampa Department Of Sanitary Sewers
Reports
In September 1976, the City of Tampa initiated a comprehensive monitoring study of the ecology of the phytoplankton community of Hillsborough Bay. Numerous studies elsewhere have shown that phytoplankton are well suited as monitors of trophic state due to their rapid response to changing environmental conditions (Hohn, 1959; Williams, 1964; Margalef, 1968; Welch, 1968; Dunstan, 1975; Taslakain and Hardy, 1976). The present study is designed to relate changes in the phytoplankton community of Hillsborough Bay with the reduced nutrient load entering the Bay from the AWT facility.
An Investigation Of Surface Albedo Variations During The Recent Sahel Drought, Carl C. Norton, Frederick R. Mosher, Barry Hinton
An Investigation Of Surface Albedo Variations During The Recent Sahel Drought, Carl C. Norton, Frederick R. Mosher, Barry Hinton
Publications
Applications Technology Satellite (ATS) 3 green sensor data are used to measure surface reflectance variations in the Sahara/Sahel during the recent drought period 1967–74. The magnitude of the seasonal reflectance change is shown to be as much as 80% for years of normal precipitation and less than 50% for drought years. Year-to-year comparisons during both wet and dry seasons reveal the existence of a surface reflectance cycle coincident with the drought intensity. The relationship between the green reflectance and solar albedo is examined and estimated to be about 0.6 times the reflectance change observed by the green channel.

Copper Toxicity And Extracellular Release In Selenastrum Capricornutum, Michael Edwin Darling
Copper Toxicity And Extracellular Release In Selenastrum Capricornutum, Michael Edwin Darling
Dissertations and Theses
Copper toxicity was investigated using the green alga, Selenastrum capricornutum. Two major areas were investigated: the forms of copper which are toxic to growth of the alga and factors that can change the concentration of free copper, Cu2+(aq), in the growth medium during the logarithmic growth of the organism. This research has shown that S. capricornutum is sensitive to the free Copper ion, Cu2+(aq), irrespective of the total copper concentration.

The Feasibility Of Change-Of-Use Of Selected State Administered Lands In Utah, Eugene K. Israelsen, Lynn H. Davis
Reports
Many acres of the state come under the jurisdiction of the State Government and are managed by the appropriate department of state government. The Division of State Lands, Department of Natural Resources of the State of Utah is responsible for the management of much of the state owned land. The Division of State Lands leases the lands to various users. Revenues from the leases are used for the support of state administered program such as education. The Division of State Lands desires to manage these lands as efficiently as possible and maximize the rents and thus increase the revenues available …

Water And Land Use Planning For Some State Lands Near Moab, Utah, Eugene K. Israelsen, Lynn H. Davis
Reports
In an attempt to apply better management principles to the control of state lands, the Division of State Lands asked for the study of two questions concerning state administered lands near Moab, Utah. The first question deals with the Moab and Spanish Valleys while the second question applies to Castle Valley some 10 miles northeast of Moab. The Mill Creek Development Project is proposed to provide additional water for agriculture and M & I use in the Moab and Spanish Valleys. The question for consideration is, "How much water from the Mill Creek Development Project Reservoir should the Division of …
Mule Deer Habitat Guidelines, Richard M. Kerr
Mule Deer Habitat Guidelines, Richard M. Kerr
United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications
The purpose of this Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus) Habitat Management Guide is principally to assist BLM managers and biologists in planning for and managing mule deer habitat on public lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management. For many years Federal land management agencies have made the distinction between the Federal responsibility for managing habitat and the State prerogatives of managing native wild ungulate populations. Certainly the two are inseparably linked. These responsibilities, and up to now "symbiotic relationships", are probably best described succinctly in Title 43 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 24.

Water, Waste And Quality Management During Preparation And Processing Of Vegetables, W. A. Sistrunk
Water, Waste And Quality Management During Preparation And Processing Of Vegetables, W. A. Sistrunk
Technical Reports
The research was designed to test and/or develop new systems of washing, peeling and blanching, develop methods of utilization of solid wastes, and find ways to reduce wastestrength of effluent without affecting quality of vegetables for processing. The highest wastestrength of effluent from vegetable processing in the region was found in plants that were canning Irish potatoes, dry beans and hominy. The high volumes of water used for washing spinach and leafy greens and the physical damage to the washed product is one of the major problems. Repetitive washing of spinach in the same water did not affect quality as …

Application of wastewater to the land has been designated a viable alternative for wastewater treatment by the Water Pollution Act Amendments of 1972 (PL 92-500). However, very little information is available concerning the long-term effects of applying wastewater to the land. The general objective of this study was to determine the long-term effects of employing secondary treated municipal wastewater as irrigation water. The study compared the quality of soils, crops, groundwater, and applied water to a site receiving normal irrigation water (control site) to a site (treated site) which had utilized seondary treated municipal effluent for irrigation water during a …

Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhiza Influence Growth But Not Mineral Concentrations In Seedlings Of Eight Sweetgum Families, Richard C. Schultz, Paul P. Kormanik, W. Craig Bryan, G. H. Brister
Richard C. Schultz
Seedlings of eight half-sib sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) families were grown for 6 months in a fumigated soil mixture, with or without inoculum from a mixture of Glomus mosseae and Glomus etunicatus fungi, at levels of 140, 280, 560, and 1120 kg/ha of 10-10-10 fertilizer. All seedlings received three additions of 187 kg/ha of N during the growing season. Inoculated seedlings had significantly greater biomass, height, and stem diameters at each fertilizer level than nonmycorrhizal control seedlings. Significant differences in growth occurred between families in mycorrhizal plants. However, fertilizer did not significantly affect growth or nutrient uptake of the seedlings. …

Protection of the environment requires effective regulatory actions which are based on ssound technical and scientific information. This information must include the quantitative description and linking of pollutant sources, transport mechanisms, interactions, and resulting effects on man and his environment. Because of the complexities involved, assessment of specific pollutants in the environment requires a total systems approach which transcends the media of air, water, and land. The Environmental Monitoring and Support Laboratory-Las Vegas contributes to the formation and enhancement of a sound monitoring data base for exposure assessment through programs designed to:
- develop and optimize systems and strategies for monitoring …
