Structural Geology Of The Northern Galice Formation, Western Klamath Mountains, Oregon And California, F. Ross Jones
Structural Geology Of The Northern Galice Formation, Western Klamath Mountains, Oregon And California, F. Ross Jones
Geology Theses and Dissertations
The Galice Formation is a thick, turbiditic flysch sequence that depositionally overlies the Josephine ophiolite in the western Klamath Mountains of northwestern California and southwestern Oregon. The Josephine ophiolite and Galice have been interpreted as the basement and sedimentary cover of a Late Jurassic back-arc basin that opened proximal to the continental margin. During the Nevadan orogeny (ca. 151-147 Ma), the ophiolite and overlying Galice sediments were thrust eastward beneath the continental margin along the regional Orleans fault. Two distinct Nevadan deformational phases are recognized in the Galice – an initial D1 or "main-phase" deformation and a later brittle deformation …

Sedimentology, Structure, And Geochemistry Of The Galice Formation: Sediment Fill Of A Back-Arc Basin And Island Arc In The Western Klamath Mountains, Rosann Park-Jones
Geology Theses and Dissertations
The western Jurassic belt of the Klamath Mountains is an ideal locale for the study of ophiolite genesis, island arc development, and study of flysch deposition from a nearby eroding island arc and continental margin. Closure and imbrication of an inferred back-arc basin coincided with the Late Jurassic Nevadan orogeny (ca 150 Ma). The Galice Formation is the youngest formation involved in the Nevadan orogeny (Lanphere et al., 1968). In the type section in southwestern Oregon, the Galice structurally overlies the Rogue Formation volcaniclastics. The Rogue Formation has been previously interpreted as an island arc assemblage (Garcia, 1979). The type …

Late Pleistocene Barrier-Island Sequence Along The Southern Delmarva Peninsula: Implications For Middle Wisconsin Sea Levels, Kenneth Finkelstein, Michael S. Kearney
Late Pleistocene Barrier-Island Sequence Along The Southern Delmarva Peninsula: Implications For Middle Wisconsin Sea Levels, Kenneth Finkelstein, Michael S. Kearney
VIMS Articles
Evidence for a middle Wisconsin sea-level high at or above modern limits along the east coast of the United States has long been controversial. Most reports have been dismissed as poorly dated or lacking unequivocal documentation of a marine transgression. We describe here a 14C-dated, middle Wisconsin transgressive sequence with an extant subaerial barrier facies along the southern Delmarva Peninsula. This sequence indicates that sea levels were near their present position between ca. 23 and 34 ka; it may correlate with other inferred similar-age littoral deposits of the area, and it suggests that the evidence for glacioeustatic fluctuations during the …

Development, Test And Application Of A New Method Of Particle Shape Analyses Based On The Concept Of The Fractal Dimension, Adam Arthur Frisch
Development, Test And Application Of A New Method Of Particle Shape Analyses Based On The Concept Of The Fractal Dimension, Adam Arthur Frisch
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Shape analysis methods based on the concept of the fractal dimension are emerging as a new method of quantifying complex particle shapes. The concept of the fractal dimension stems from the approximately linear relationship between the logarithm of the particle perimeter and the logarithm of the step length or unit of measure. as step length is shortened, the resulting particle perimeter is lengthened. The fractal dimension (D) is defined as 1 {dollar}-{dollar} b, where b is the slope of the log/log plot of perimeter against step length. Using two dimensional projected particle outlines measured by a video image digitizing system, …

An Inventory And Condition Survey Of Rangelands In The Ashburton River Catchment, Western Australia, A A. Mitchell, A L. Payne, W F. Holman
Technical Bulletins
The inventory and condition survey of rangelands in the Ashburton River catchment, undertaken by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA) between 1976 and 1978, describes and maps the natural resources of the region’s pastoral leasehold land. This survey report provides a baseline record of the existence and condition of the natural area’s resources, to assist with the planning and implementation of land management practices. The report identified and described the condition of soils, landforms, vegetation, habitat, ecosystems, and declared plants and animals. It also assessed the impact of pastoralism and made land management recommendations. The area surveyed …

A Monograph Of The Genus Polyphylla Harris In America North Of Mexico (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae), Ronald M. Young
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum
The North American species of the genus Polyphylla Harris, 1841, are defined and revised for the first time since Fall (1928). All name bearing types were examined except those of P. oklahomensis Hatch and P. subvittata LeConte (synonyms of P. hammondl), which are lost. A lectotype is designated for P. gracilis Horn, and neotypes for P. decemlineata (Say), P. occidentalis (L.), and P. variolosa (Hentz). New synonyms of P. decemlineata are P. comstockiana von Bloeker, P. matrona Casey, and P. potsiana Casey. New synonyms of P. crinita …

Mid-Tertiary Volcanic Rocks Of The Timberwolf Mountain Area, South-Central Cascades, Washington, Julianna M. (Julianna Maureen) Shultz
Mid-Tertiary Volcanic Rocks Of The Timberwolf Mountain Area, South-Central Cascades, Washington, Julianna M. (Julianna Maureen) Shultz
WWU Graduate School Collection
Over 3000 m of mid-Tertiary Cascade arc volcanics are exposed in the Timberwolf Mountain area of Washington's central Cascade Range. Arc rocks of the Ohanapecosh, Stevens Ridge, and Fifes Peak Formations overlie the Jura-Cretaceous Rimrock Lake inlier and sparse late Eocene(?) sedimentary rocks. Geochemical analyses of meta-basalts from the Russell Ranch and Indian Creek complexes that comprise the inlier indicate an island-arc or immature continental volcanic-arc tectonic environment for the inlier.
The early to mid Oligocene Ohanapecosh Formation is comprised of two facies within the study area. Distal, water-lain andesitic to dacitic lapilli-tuffs of the Wildcat Creek facies unconformably overlie …
The Effects Of Urbanization On The Water Balance Of The Fishtrap Creek Basin, Northwest Washington And South Central British Columbia, Charles S. (Charles Steven) Lindsay
The Effects Of Urbanization On The Water Balance Of The Fishtrap Creek Basin, Northwest Washington And South Central British Columbia, Charles S. (Charles Steven) Lindsay
WWU Graduate School Collection
The Fishtrap Creek basin is located in northwest Washington State and south central British Columbia. Land use in the basin is predominantly agricultural. Moderate urbanization in the past thirty-five years has increased impervious surface area in the basin from 1.8 to 8.0 percent. Monthly water balances were derived in order to quantify the effect of changing land use on the discharge of Fishtrap Creek. Stream discharges calculated from these water balances, constructed for 1952 through 1953 and 1987 through 1988, compare well with measured monthly and annual stream discharges. The favorable comparison indicates that the water- balance variables are in …

The Depositional Environment, Petrography, And Tectonic Implications Of Informally Named Middle To Late Eocene Marine Strata, Western Olympic Peninsula, Washington, Benjamin Nickolas Adams
WWU Graduate School Collection
The informally named marine strata examined in this study comprise fault bounded slivers of middle to late Eocene (Ulatizian to Narizian) siltstone, sandstone, and conglomerate exposed on the northwestern Olympic Peninsula. The strata are divided into three lithofacies: the sandstone of Bahobohosh, the siltstone of Waatch Point and the siltstone and sandstone of Bear Creek by Snavley et al. (1986). Six facies have been identified consisting of strata deposited by high- and low-density turbidites, storm waves, slumping, tidal or littoral currents, and debris flows. Relationships among the facies indicate shallow marine deposition that shoaled from below to above storm wave-base …
Long Wave Generation By Wave Groups In The Nearshore, Jeffrey H. List
Long Wave Generation By Wave Groups In The Nearshore, Jeffrey H. List
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This study investigates the forcing of leaky mode long wave by incident wave groups in the nearshore. Using both field and model data, two previously proposed generation models are evaluated: the bounded long wave of Longuet-Higgins and Stewart (1964), and the breakpoint-forced long wave of Symonds et al. (1982). New methods of parameterizing incident wave height modulations are proposed, including an amplitude time series and a clearly defined groupiness factor. Cross-correlations between observed amplitude and low frequency time series clearly document the release and shoreline reflection of a group-forced long wave. The shallow water amplification of the component identified as …
