The study area is located in central Columbia County and encompasses approximately 373 square kilometers. The purpose of the study was to map lithofacies to a scale of 1:31250, study the petrography of the lithofacies, determine the stratigraphy, and develop a model for environment of deposition of the Scappoose Formation.

Rheological Properties Of Mudflows Associated With The May 1980 Eruptions Of Mount St. Helens Volcano, Washington, Jonathan H. Fink, Michael C. Malin, Richard E. D'Alli, Ronald Greeley

Rheological properties of three recent mudflows at Mount St. Helens were estimated using techniques developed for determining the properties of debris flows based on the geometry of their deposits. Calculated yield strengths of 1100, 1000, and 400 Pa, maximum flow velocities of 10 to 31 m/s, volumetric flow rates of 300 to 3400 m3/s, and plastic viscosities of 20 to 320 Pa-s all compare favorably with measured and estimated values cited in the literature. A method for determining likely sites of future mudflow initiation based on these data is outlined.

The stratigraphy, structure, and depositional environments of the Naborton, Do let Hills, and part of the Cow Bayou Formations (Wilcox Group, Paleocene) at the Oxbow Mine site, Red River, De Soto, and Natchitoches Parishes,. Louisiana, were evaluated from a study of four continuous cores and 466 geophysical logs.

Overlying 40 feet {12 m) of silty Porters Creek shale is the Naborton Formation composed of 130-195 feet (40-59 m) of sand, silt, clay, and lignite. There are three lignites in this formation and their average total thickness is 13.5 feet (4. l m), or about 10% of the formation thickness. The …

The Sentinel Butte Formation (Paleocene) near Lost Bridge, Dunn County, west-central North Dakota, is 190 meters thick, and is charac terized by four main lithologies: sand, silt, clay, and lignite. The study interval is ISO meters thick, and lies between the basal sand of the formation and the Bullion Butte lignite bed, neither of which are exposed in the immediate study area. Sand, gray to yellow, makes up about 3S% of the interval studied. It occurs in tabular beds 2-18 meters thick. The purpose of this study was to map and study the characteristics and origin of the Cenozoic phonolites and related rocks of the Houston Creek area, located on the southwestern flank of the Bear Lodge Mountains, 10 km northwest of Sundance, Wyoming. Mapping was conducted on a 2 1:10,000 scale over a 16 km area. Microprobe, optical, and x-ray diffraction procedures were employed to observe and describe petrographic and chemical characteristics of the rocks.

The Cenozoic igneous rocks of the Houston Creek area are classified as phonolite, phonolite porphyry, trachyte porphyry, sodalite-bearing phonolite and altered felsite. These hypabyssal rock types …

The overall purpose of studying the Quaternary geology of Chaco Canyon is to develop an understanding of how the geomorphic system in the Chaco drainage evolved and how it presently operates. Petrologic, Mineralogic, And Ion Exchange Characteristics Of The Rome Formation And Pumpkin Valley Shale On The Oak Ridge National Laboratory Reservation, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Janine Gajda Sledz

Two outcrops of the Rome Formation and lower Conasauga Group, located on the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Reservation were studied with respect to their petrologic, mineralogic, and ion exchange characteristics. Twenty-eight sample pairs (a pair consisted of a fresh and weathered segment) were taken from each outcrop.

The agrillaceous samples were analyzed by x-ray diffraction and the remaining samples by thin section analysis. Using an ammonia electrode, CEC values were determined for all argillaceous samples and selected non-argillaceous samples. Porosity determinations of the fresh segments of the sandstones and siltstones were made, using 100to 12 micron thick petrographic sections.

Relationship Of Gravity Anomalies To A Drift Filled Bedrock Valley System In Calhoun County Michigan, James W. Farnsworth

Gravity geophysics along with well data were used to delineate and map the locations of buried river valleys in Calhoun County, Michigan. The valleys are filled with thick sequences of glacial fluvial deposits which can serve as important aquifers.

One hundred and sixty-four gravimeter observations were made at approximately one-quarter mile intervals in a 35 square mile area. Four short-interval profiles were also established perpendicular to suspected valleys. A three-dimensional trend surface polynomial was fitted to the total Bouguer anomaly to approximate the regional effect of gravity. The Regina quadrangle is located in Sandoval and Rio Arriba Counties, New Mexico, along the boundary between the northwestern margin of the Nacimiento uplift and the east-central San Juan Basin. The uplift is composed of a core of Precambrian rocks overlain by a veneer of Mississippian through Triassic sedimentary rocks. Sedimentary rocks ranging in age from Jurassic to Tertiary are upturned along the margin of the San Juan Basin.

The Precambrian rocks in the area are primarily granite to granodiorite gneiss with xenoliths of mafic and felsic metavolcanic rocks and metasedimentary rocks. These rocks have undergone greenschist facies metamorphism. Late …

Grain size analysis of samples representing all sampleable portions of the airfall deposit produced by the Fuego volcano in Guatemala on 14 October 1974 form the basis for estimating the total grain size distribution of tephra from this eruption. The region enclosed by each isopach has a particular average grain size distribution which can be weighted proportionally to its percentage volume. The grain size of pyroclastic avalanche deposits produced during the eruption are also included. The total grain size distribution calculated as a sum of weighted distributions has a median grain size of 0.8∅ (0.6mm) and a sorting coefficient (σ∅) …

The geologic setting of the Portland Basin is ideal for gravity surveys because of the large density contrasts between geologic units. The Portland Basin consists of a north-northwest-trending syncline in the Columbia River basalt overlain by Pliocene to Recent alluvium. This study was undertaken to define structures in the Portland Basin which are obscured by the alluvium.

An areal gravity survey of the Portland Basin covering approximately 450 square kilometers was conducted for this study.

Variations In The Depositional Environment Of The Lower Cincinnatian Kope Formation, Thomas K. Mahan

In northern Kentucky, the Upper Ordovician (Lower Cincinnatian) Kope Formation outcrops as a series of interbedded, laterally discontinuous limestone lenses and beds enclosed in a silty shale unit. Six stratigraphic sections within a 20-mile radius were sampled and measured and two of these were described in detail to characterize the variations in the environmental setting wherein the Kope Formation was deposited.

The shale lithology is homogeneous throughout this formation whereas the bioclastic limestones vary widely in faunal composition, texture, cross-sectional shape, and thickness. A mathematical model by Green, simulating one-dimensional vertical ground-water movement in unsaturated soils of the prairie region of Kansas, has been adapted for use in a wetlands environment typified by the wetlands forest of Eastern Arkansas. The model consists of two second-order, non-linear, partial differential equations and an algorithm for their numerical solution. The original model was extended to include functions for seasonal changes in transpiration and for drainage of excess precipitation. Before the addition of the two functions, the model reliability was limited to one growth season.

Three volcanic domes and related volcanic rocks of Tertiary age are located near Etna, Utah, in Box Elder County. The domes follow a north-south trend and are fault controlled. Flow structure indicates a change from a less viscous, flow-forming lava which produced an exogenous dome to a more viscous lava which formed endogenous domes. Associated pyroclastic deposits are negligible. The volcanic rocks are composed of porphyritic rhyolite and rhyolitic vitrophyre having phenocrysts of quartz, sanidine, plagioclase and biotite with minor amounts of Fe-Ti oxides, hypersthene, allanite and calcic amphibole. Recent awareness of the finite nature of fossil-fuel resources has resulted in an increased interest in alternate sources of energy such as geothermal. To evaluate the geothermal energy potential of the hot-springs system near Midway, Wasatch Co., Utah, consideration was given to heat flow, water chemistry, and structural controls.

Abnormal heat flow was indicated qualitatively by snow-melt patterns and quantitatively by heat-flow measurements that were obtained from two of four temperature-gradient wells drilled in the area. These measurements indicated that the area north of the town of Midway is characterized by heat flow equal to 321.75 mW/m2, which …

Ash Hollow Creek is an intermittent stream forming a southern tributary to the North Platte River. The creek flows only in response to precipitation from locally heavy thunderstorms or to heavy runoff from melting snow in the spring. Western Nebraska has a semi-arid climate and receives less than 20 inches of rainfall per year. Vegetation in the park and surrounding area is typical of the short grass prairie of the Great Plains. Native short grasses grow abundantly on undisturbed tablelands, valley sides, and along principal flood plains of streams and rivers. Prickly pear, barrel cactus, yucca and sagebrush are common …

The Permian Meade Peak Member of the Phosphoria Formation was examined at four localities in this investigation. Fossils were collected at each locality. The four collecting localities visited in this investigation are: Brazier Canyon, Utah, Montpelier Canyon, Idaho, Coal Canyon, Wyoming, and Cokeville, Wyoming.

The environment of deposition of the Meade Peak Member in the study area is inferred to have been an outer shelf or basin characterized by moderately deep and quiet water. This has aided reconstruction of life habits, population dynamics, and growth characteristics of the examined species.

This report is based on the chemical analysis of the waters from 93 springs and 9 wells. Springs, when free from metal plumbing, provide an uncontaminated source of the ground water and it was desired to obtain water uncontaminated with metals. A few wells were added to the list, usually because of their unique location in the sampling grid.

Petrologic problems may be analyzed using any of a variety of possible choices of units. Although gram-formula units (moles) are commonly used, other units of quantity arc more appropriate for many applications. Gram-atom units offer the numerical simplicity of gram-formula units and have the advantage of being conserva­tive. A conservative unit of quantity is one for which the sum of the units of reactants equals the sum of the units of products in a chemical reaction. For many graphical problems, a conservative unit of quantity, such as gram-atom or mass units, should be used. Since gram-formula units are not conservative, …

The plan was prepared for a close working relationship between the evaluation teams and the immediate availability of geochemical and geophysical data to the geologic mapping team. Those samples determined in the field to be anomalously high in heavy metals by cold extractable procedures were sent to North American Laboratories where metal content determinations were made through: atomic absorption and spectrophotometry after hot acid digestion techniques.

The High Bridge Group (Middle Ordovician) of central Kentucky, a major source of limestone and dolomite for construction and agricultural stone, is also a potential source of stone for industrial uses requiring carbonate rocks of high chemical purity. Chemical analyses of foot-by-foot samples from a Fayette County core show that several thick zones of high-carbonate and low-silica stone are present in the High Bridge at a minable depth.
