It is the hope of the authors that all of the various publications and maps of the Kentucky Geological Survey are included in this bibliography. It is our intent to revise, supplement, and update the publication lists in "Geological Research in Kentucky" by Willard Rouse Jillson (1923).

During its history the Kentucky Geological Survey has suffered losses from two disastrous fires, one at Frankfort in 1929, and a second at Lexington in 1948. Many maps and some of the reports were reprinted after 1948 in Series VIII, but so many of the earlier publications were lost that they are now …

The Lewisporte/Loon Bay area is located within the Central Volcanic belt of Newfoundland. It contains rocks of (?)upper Cambrian to Ordovician in age. The most important group of rocks within this area is the three part Campbellton sequence. The oldest unit of the Campbellton sequence is the Loon Harbour Formation (500-1,000 m thick) composed of mafic volcaniclastics that is conformably overlain by manganiferous cherts of the Luscombe Formation. The Luscombe Formation (370 m thick) is composed of manganiferous cherts that grade upward into highly argillaceous chert. Conformably overlying the Luscombe Formation is the Riding Island greywacke that represents the uppermost …

Complex Structure And Stratigraphy Of Lower Slices Of The Taconic Allochthon Near Middle Granville, New York, David B. Rowley

The Precambrian (?) to medial Ordovician rocks of the Taconic Allochthon are characterized by argillaceous and arenaceous sediments with lesser associated carbonates, carbonate breccias, and cherts of predominantly deep-water aspect. These allochthonous rocks tectonically overlie an autochthonous to parautochthonous coeval sequence of dominantly shallow marine clastics and carbonates of the Champlain and Vermont Valley sequences. Facies, thickness, sedimentologic, and paleontologic considerations suggest that these coeval sequences represent a carbonate shelf continental rise pair of the east-facing early Paleozoic Atlantic-type margin of North America. This margin formed by the opening of an ocean in latest Precambrian time. The stratigraphy of the …

Several problems in the fields of tectonics, structural geology and isotopic dating were examined and simplified using computer programs. These problems include the theory of refolding, refold applications to three mining areas, hotspots and their relationship to mantle convection systems and ionium dating of volcanic rocks. In the first study, it was shown that current refold classification schemes are inadequate and so modifications were suggested. Various other aspects of multiple generations of interfering folds were also examined. The Geology Of The Northern Part Of North Arm Massif, Bay Of Islands Ophiolite Complex, Newfoundland: With Application To Upper Oceanic Crust Lithology, Structure, And Genesis, Eric J. Rosencrantz

Detailed mapping (1:15,800) of the northern half of North Arm Massif shows the area to be underlain with a complete, although thin, ophiolite assemblage consisting, from top to base, of basalts, sheeted diabase dikes, isotropic and layered gabbroic rocks, layered ultramafic rocks and harzburgite tectonite. The assemblage represents a preserved piece of Cambrian oceanic crust analogous to present-day oceanic crust. Sheeted dikes and isotropic gabbros comprise the majority of the rocks exposed, with this sequence at present flat-lying to gently warped into open, upright but nonsystematic folds. The Bay of Islands Ophiolite Complex forms a discontinuous belt of highly allochthonous mafic and ultramafic massifs in southwestern Newfoundland. The North Arm Mountain Massif contains the only significant exposures of sedimentary rocks overlying the ophiolite and also contains the most extensive exposures of plutonic rocks in the Bay of Islands Complex. Mapping has shown that sedimentary rocks, here named the Crabb Brook Group, rest with a pronounced erosional unconformity on ophiolitic rocks. Lithologic,paleontologic, facies, structural, and tectonic relationships indicate that this Group was deposited on the back of the ophiolite allochthon as it was being obducted onto the early …

Carbonated, alkaline, saline waters occur over a wide area in the upper Hudson River Valley approaching 1,000 square miles. Through the sampling (spring and fall) of 39 locations, half of which were hitherto unsampled, the waters are shown to be a complexly mixed system with at least five major components.
They are:
1) a gaseous phase consisting primarily of CO2;
2) a fluid (containing the dissolved CO2) possibly analogous to a metamorphic brine whose major chemistry is HCO3>Na>Cl;
3) formational waters of variably low salinities which may be the end products of progressive dilution of Paleozoic connate brines …

Stratigraphies previously proposed for the Taconic sequence of southern Washington County, eastern New York, have incorrectly defined and positioned lower Cambrian black slate units. The proper sequence of Cambrian (?) through Cambrian lithologies is (terminology from Jacobi, 1977): Bomoseen green wacke, Truthville green slate, Browns Pond black slate, Mettawee purple and green slate, and West Castleton and Hatch Hill black slates. This and the entire Taconic sequence is conformable within the western Giddings Brook slice. The Tillamook Highlands is a largely unmapped volcanic pile located in the north end of the Coast Range of Oregon. The 36 square miles of T. 1 N., R. 8 W., on the southcentral margin of the Highlands, was chosen for detailed study.

The study area is composed of Eocene age sedimentary and volcanic units which were deposited in a filling basin. The lowest units were deposited in moderate to deep marine waters; the uppermost were deposited subaerially.

The Chehalem Mountains area, encompassing 70 square kilometers, is at the western extent of the Columbia River Basalt Group as mapped in western Oregon. The flows in the study area were identified as belonging to subdivisions of the Columbia River Basalt Group on the basis of physical characteristics and trace element geochemistry. The basalt flows are poorly exposed in the area and weathering is deep and extensive where the flows have been exposed. Where erosion has exposed the underlying marine sedimentary rocks, the basalt has failed in landslides.

During summer 1977, five members of the Liverpool University Potholing Club spent six weeks working and exploring in the caves of Jamaica. The team consisted of Don McFarlane, John Dye, Malcolm Macduff, Mike Roger and Barry Williams, all of whom contributed to this report. The expedition base was at Troy, where the villagers are owed a debt of gratitude for their hospitality. This placed the expedition in the heart of the cave region, and a number of new caves and shafts were discovered and explored. A seismic survey of the Cannon River Valley between Northfield and Cannon Falls, Minnesota, revealed the presence of a 30-meter deep buried river valley under or near the Cannon River. The buried channel emanates from the Spring Creek Valley in Northfield, makes a 90-degree turn to the northeast at the confluence of Spring Creek and the Cannon River. and follows the Cannon to Cannon Falls. Buried tributary valleys appear to join the main buried channel at several locations. The Effect Of Dissolution Of Volcanic Glass On The Water Chemistry In A Tuffaceous Aquifer, Rainier Mesa, Nevada, Art F. White, Hans C. Claassen, Larry Benson

Geochemistry of ground water associated with the Tertiary tuffs within Rainier Mesa, southern Nevada, was investigated to determine the relative importance of glass dissolution in controlling water chemistry. Water samples were obtained both from interstitial pores in core sections and from free-flowing fractures. Cation compositions showed that calcium and magnesium decreased as a function of depth in the mesa, as sodium increased. The maximum effect occurs within alteration zones containing clinoptilolite and montmorillonite, suggesting these minerals effectively remove bivalent cations from the system.

This report provides descriptive statistics for 29 chemical or biological constituents for 109 stream sites in Nebraska sampled by the U.S. Geological Survey beginning in 1946. Also provided for each site are regression equations relating specific conductance to each of 12 chemical constituents and a regression equation relating specific conductance to stream discharge. The descriptive statistics are presented by river basins. Water leaving these basins that has the lowest mean specific conductance (266 umho/cm) is from the Niobrara River at Verdel, and water that has the highest (1,890 umho/cm) is from the South Platte River at Roscoe. Eighty-one water samples were collected from wells in the Boone-St. Joe limestone aquifer of northwest Arkansas and analyzed for fecal coliform, fecal streptococcus, total coliform bacteria, chloride, phosphate, nitrate and sulfate to determine the degree of contamination. Forty-nine percent of the samples had fecal streptococcus counts greater than 1 colony per 100 ml, 68% had total coliform counts of 1 or more colonies per 100 ml, and 9% of the wells had fecal coliform counts of 1 or more colonies per 100 ml. One hundred and seventy-seven drillers' well reports were used to investigate the groundwater resources of Baxter, Fulton, Izard, and Sharp counties. The most widely utilized aquifer zone is composed of the Cotter and Jefferson City dolomites. The well depths range from 30 to 740 ft. with a mean and median of 264 and 225 ft., respectively. The drillers' yield estimates range from 1 to 50 gpm with a mean of 12.0 gpm and a median of 10 gpm. The piezometric surface has an average hydraulic gradient of 9 ft./mile with groundwater discharge occurring along the Spring and White Rivers. Overlying …

Two aquifers are extensively used by residents of small communities and rural areas in northern Searcy County, Arkansas. The Mississippian Boone-St. Joe aquifer is generally the less productive and the shallower of the two. Ground-water yields for the Boone-St. Joe range from 0.5 to 75 gpm with a median yield of 5 and a mean of 9.8 gpm. Well depths range from 100 to 754 feet with a median depth of 350 feet and a mean of 360 feet. Confined conditions are indicated by the greater depths, whereas the Boone-St. Joe aquifer is unconfined when exposed at the surface. Underlying …

Mercury Content Of Waters In The Midcontinent Region, Larry Barber Ii, Kenneth F. Steele

Two major areas of the midcontinent region were investigated for their aqueous mercury concentrations. Sixteen surface water and 17 ground water samples were collected in an eleven county area of N.W. Arkansas, S.W. Missouri and N.E. Oklahoma (Ozark area) and analyzed for total dissolved mercury by the flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometric method. The range (<0.2 to 0.8 ppb), the mean (0.4 ppb) and the median (0.4 ppb) are the same for both ground water and surface water. Values obtained for the Ozark area are slightly greater than those reported for surface water by others (about 0.1 ppb), but are well within the range reported for surface waters (0.1 to 17.0 ppb). The range for 102 ground water samples from the Ouachita Mountain area is <0.1 to 2.3 ppb, the mean 0.3 ppb and the median 0.1 ppb. Thus, the mercury values for this area are similar to those of the Ozark area except fora higher upper range. The mercury mineralization (cinnabar) in the southern part of the Ouachita Mountain area, in part, is the cause of the higher values. Only two samples (2.1 and 2.3 ppb), both from the Ouachita Mountain area, exceed the EPA drinking water limits of 2 ppb mercury in the western Arkansas region.

During 1974, the U.S. Geological Survey began a comprehensive hydrologic study of the oil-shale area in the southeastern Uinta Basin of Utah and Colorado. From 1976 to 1978, six deep test holes were drilled principally to obtain information about aquifers in the Green River Formation of Tertiary age. Information obtained from the drilling project includes description of lithologic samples from core and drill cuttings, temperature and geophysical logs, drilling logs, packer tests, aquifer (pumping and recovery) tests, and analyses of water samples.

The water-quality reconnaissance of the San Rafael River basin, Utah, encompassed an area of about 2,300 square miles (5,960 square kilometers). Data were obtained by the U.S. Geological Survey one or more times at 116 sites from June 1977 to September 1978. At 19 other sites visited during the same period, the streams were dry. Precipitation and stream discharge were significantly less then normal during 1977 and ranged from less than to more than normal during 1978.

A flow-cell colorimetric technique has been developed by which Al concentrations of 0.0003to 0.1 wt. percent can be analyzed in one-microliter fluid samples.An A1-complexing reagent (Ferron) continuously flowing through teflon capillary tubing is spiked with one-microliter aliquots of solutions containing A1. The sample reacts with the reagent and subsequently passes through a microcolorimeter. Measurement of less than one nanomole A1 is possible by comparing the integrated absorbance of unknown samples with standard solutions.

Geologic mapping in the Black Hills area strongly suggests that the middle Eocene basalts of the Crescent Formation and over- lying upper Eocene and Oligocene sedimentary rocks constitute a structurally coherent terrane that is bounded by northeast- and northwest-trending faults. I interpret the Black Hills as a homocline which dips about 10° to 15° to the west. Units within the block are commonly cut by normal and reverse faults, but are not appreciably folded.

Major- and trace-element geochemical analyses indicate that the Black Hills suite is co-magmatic, and is composed of hyper- sthene-normative tholeiites which were apparently derived by plagioclase …
