Petrology And Regional Relationships Of The Ordovician Kinnikinic Formation And Equivalents, Central And Southern Idaho, William Calvin James

The Kinnikinic Formation of central Idaho is a sedimentary unit consisting principally of orthoquartzite. From its maximum measured thickness of 2285 feet in the central Lemhi Range near Gilmore, Idaho, it thins westward to 376 feet at the type section and southward to 326 feet near Arco, Idaho. Northeast of the Lemhi Range it occurs only as erosional remnants, due to pre-Devonian erosion. Both the lower and upper contacts of the Kinnikinic Formation are disconformable.

The Kinnikinic Formation is light colored, predominately fine to medium grained, thin to medium bedded, and largely cemented by silica overgrowths. Some metamorphic recrystallization has …

Mineral And Chemical Content Of The Deep-Water Sediment Sequences Of Bear Lake, Utah-Idaho, James C. Biesinger

Twenty-five piston cores 6 to 12 feet long were obtained from the deepwater sediments of Bear Lake, Utah-Idaho. Analyses of these cores revealed that the deep-water sediments of the lake are divided into two major sequences: a younger sequence rich in carbonate minerals, here called the carbonate sequence, and an older sequence rich in silicate minerals, referred to in this paper as the silt sequence. The carbonate sequence is composed of clay-sized quartz, aragonite, calcite, dolomite, montmorillonite, illite, kaolinite, chlorite, and amorphous material. Mineralogical and petrographic analyses of the upper Jurassic - lower Cretaceous units in the vicinity of the Dinosaur National Monument quarry near Jensen, Utah, have elucidated their characteristics and the locations of formational boundaries. The lower part of the Morrison Formation is distinguished by a decreased amount of illite and an increased amount of kaolinite. In contrast, the underlying Curtis Formation contains an approximately equal mixture of illite and kaolinite. The lower Salt Wash Member and the upper Brushy Basin Member of the Morrison are both lithologically and mineralogically identifiable in this area. Above the boundary between the two, kaolinite …

Ic0 flow directions on the glaciated Appalachian Plateau in central New York were from the Adirondack Hountains. This is demonstrated by both striae directions and erratic provena..-1ce studies. No evidence for more than one Wisconsin glaciation as suggested by Rich (1935) could be found. Theories for local glaciation during the decline and after the retreat of the Laurentide Ice Sheet were also unsubstantiated. The East and West Branches Delaware River had different styles of daglaciation. The West Branch is characterized by zones of stagnation. An investigation of iron, zinc, copper, and cadmium concentrations in Mytilus californianus and Mytilus edulis was conducted on specimens collected along the west coast of the United States. Animals and sea water were collected at six different areas and analyzed using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. Trace metal concentrations in the animals were influenced by the collection conditions of age, species, temperature, pollution, and metal relationships. Younger animals, of both species, contained higher concentrations of all the metals. Larger, or older animals, contained the smallest metal concentrations. Copper concentrations in the animals were higher in sea water with high copper content. …

There are numerous linear features in Alpena and Presque Isle Counties, Michigan, which are generally visible on aerial photographs. These photolinears trend in two general directions, northeast-southwest and northwest-southeast. These two sets are perpendicular to each other, and represent vector means of two fracture sets.

The development of the photolinears began in Early Devonian. Throughout its history, ground water flowed along underground channels connecting fracture intersections. This underground drainage network is responsible for many of the photolinears. The Little Drum Mountains represent a deeply eroded Eocene-Oligocene volcano, consisting of a vent complex which erupted mafic flows and flow breccias, accompanied by lahars. Flows are dominated by members of the shoshonite suite and contain up to 3.95 percent K2O, mainly occult in K-rich glass, with K2O/Na2O ratios greater than 1.0. In a few interbedded flows, apparently of the calc-alkaline series, pyroxene with varying amounts of plagioclase in a fine-grained groundmass of plagioclase, mafic minerals, and interstitial glass. An ash-flow tuff of the Oligocene Needles Range Formation unconformably overlies the volcanic sequence. Contemporaneous …

Stone stripes are linear accumulations of rock debris separated by finer material and oriented down the steepest available slope. In north central Oregon, the stone stripes are composed of basalt fragments and occur where the soil mantle averages less than 1 m in depth. They are best developed in areas of higher elevation, usually from about 900 to 1100 m, and are most prominent on convex to straight slopes of 15 to 30 degrees. The stripes vary from a few meters to over 150 in length, and their widths range from 0.3 to over 3 m. The depth of the …

Elongate, low-amplitude flexures in strata of Pennsylvanian age have been delineated in recent mapping by the U. S. Geological Survey in co­operation with the Kentucky Geological Survey in a 600-square-mile (l ,536- square-kilometer) area between Pine and Cumberland Mountains in south­eastern Kentucky. Cresta! culminations on gentle anticlinal folds may indicate loci of subsurface closures for entrapment of oil and gas. The area studied is underlain by more than 15,000 feet (4,500 meters) of Paleozoic strata containing potential source-beds, reservoirs, and cap rocks. The settlement of San Lorenzo is approximately 19 miles east of Silver City, New Mexico. The area consists of rolling hills, relatively steep slopes and the broad Mimbres River Valley. The land surface reflects partial erosion of Basin and Range fault blocks. The maximtun elevation is 7,170 feet, with relief of 1,400 feet.

The main structural feature is a northwest trending mountain range, which is a west-southwest-dipping fault block bounded on the northeast by the Mimbres fault. Vertical displacement ranges from 150 meters (500 feet) to 1,200 meters (4,000 feet). Rocks exposed along the steep northeastern escarpment range in age …

Massive metallic-sulfide deposits were implaced in the Leadville Limestone {Mississippian) of Central Colorado less than 70 million years ago. The thermal fluids which precipitated ore at Gilman, Colorado have regionally altered the Leadville Limestone. The sequence of alteration began with the recrystallization of limestone to a dark medium~grained dolomite containing a homogeneous distribution of Fe. This Was followed by partial recrystallization of the medium-grained dolomite to coarse-clear dolomite which contains an inhomogeneous distribution of Fe. The resulting banded rock is known as "zebra rock" . Precipitation of Si0 2 (jasperoid) occurred next. The jaspe=oid formed prior to the deposition of …

"The need for the study of microfossils such as foraminifera, conodonts, and otoliths as stratigraphic tools has been well established. However, disarticulated parts such as otoliths and conodonts cannot be effectively used unless they can be recognized. Otoliths, although somewhat unrecognized in the geological record, are far more abundant than articulated skeletons (Frizzell, 1965, p. 86). Therefore, much investigation is being conducted to reveal the origin, function, morphology, and usefulness of the otoliths of fishes.

"The trace metal contents of limestone in the Tri-State zinc-lead district were determined within a single horizon, the M bed. Ninety-six specimens, collected for a previous study of their petrographic character, were analyzed for zinc, lead, and copper using atomic absorption spectrophotometric techniques.

The unaltered M bed limestone at a distance from ore bodies was found to contain only 12-28 ppm zinc, 40-SO ppm lead and 12 ppm or less copper. Those limestone specimens which were found b earlier petrographic study to be altered principally to sparry calcite commonly contain anomalous amounts of zinc and lead. Some also have slightly …

Stratigraphic Comparison Of The Precambrian Wyman And Johnnie Formations In The Western Great Basin, California, Johnnie Nathan Moore

The Precambrian Johnnie Formation in the Death Valley area and to the south is separable into two facies. The southern facies contains six distinct members: the transitional, quartzite, lower carbonate-bearing, siltstone, upper carbonate-bearing, and Rainstorm members. Dolomite, quartzite, and mudstone characterize the southern facies, as does the presence of the Johnnie oolite. To the north the Johnnie oolite pinches out and the amount of mudstone in the formation increases. The dominantly mudstone northern facies contains local gray limestone lenses closely similar to limestone in the Wyman Formation in the White-Inyo Mountains. The Pierre-Niobrara unconformity, one of several significant unconformities in the Cretaceous System of the Western Interior region, has not generally been recognized. Detailed correlation of electric logs of a large number of wells in western Nebraska provides evidence of its existence. Isopach maps of the beds occupying three identifiable stratigraphic intervals - a redefined Niobrara Formation, an unnamed uppermost Niobrara unit, and an unnamed basal Pierre unit, which includes the Ardmore Bentonite - provide recognizable geologic patterns that permit reconstruction of the stages of development of the unconformity. The depositional environments of a 40 meter thick interval in the upper part of the Sentinel Butte Formation in southeastern McKenzie County, North Dakota have been determined from the sedimentary structures, geometry, distribution of grain· sizes, and stratigraphic relations of cyclic lithostratigraphic units. The top of the study interval is the top of the upper yellow marker bed.

An elongate, tabular sand bed was studied in detail. It is 12 meters thick and 3 kilometers wide and it is interpreted to have been deposited by lateral accretion in a high-sinuosity stream. Paleo current indicators are parallel to the long axis …

The Clear Creek-Zoroaster Canyon area is located in the east- central section of the Bright Angel Quadrangle (Maxson, 1968) roughly seven miles east northeast of Grand Canyon Village, Arizona. The boundaries of the present study area are shown in Figure 1. The study area extends from Mile 83.7 to Mile 86 on the Colorado River below Lee's Ferry, Arizona.

Older Precambrian rocks are exposed along the Inner Gorge of the Colorado River. They also crop out at Zoroaster Canyon, Clear Creek, and Cremation Creek. There are over 450 m of vertical exposure. Many outcrops are inaccessible due to steepness of …

Establishment of late Pleistocene geomagnetic polarity events would provide useful time indices for regional and interregional stratigraphic correlations. Development of a geomagnetic polarity scale tied to radiocarbon dating for the Puget Lowland helps to elucidate the possible occurrence of world-wide (dipole) reversed events during the last 50,000 years. Stability and reliability tests indicate that late Pleistocene sediments exposed in the Puget Lowland record valid paleomagnetic directions. Puget Lowland geomagnetic polarity for the interval 11,000 years to 30,000 years BP was normal except for a short reversed period between 20,000 years and 15,000 years BP. The study area extends from Phantom Creek to Crystal Creek, a distance of approximately 10 miles along the Colorado River. The units exposed are the Precambrian Vishnu Schist granitic to granodioritic units in Phantom Canyon, Trinity Canyon, and near Crystal Creek, and pegmatites and aplites. The Vishnu Schist is composed mostly of quartzo-feldspathic schists. The assemblage quartz-oligoclase-muscovite-biotite-sillimanite-K-feldspar indicates metamorphic conditions in the upper amphibolite facies between Phantom Creek and Mile 95. Between Mile 95 and Crystal Creek, assemblages indicate lower amphibolite to greenschist facies conditions.

The Phantom Granitic Complex consists of granodioritic and quartz monzonitic units. The presence of a …

"The Gasconade Formation (Lower Ordovician) has been studied in the surface and subsurface in the Ozarks of Missouri and northeastern Oklahoma. The formation is mostly dolomite with a sandstone member at the base (Gunter) and frequent occurrences of chert bodies of different shapes particularly in the middle part.

The dolomite crystals in the lower and upper parts are subhedral to euhedral of equicrystalline to two-size fabric and range in size from 300-600 microns, and subhedral to anhedral of variable fabric and smaller size in the middle part. A sequence of cloudy and clear areas, named zoning, characterizes the euhedral crystals. …
