In late March 2018, a large part of the Eastern Mediterranean experienced an extraordinary episode of African dust, one of the most intense in recent years, here referred to as the “Minoan Red” event. The episode mainly affected the Greek island of Crete, where the highest aerosol concentrations over the past 15 yeas were recorded, although impacts were also felt well beyond this core area. Our study fills a gap in dust research by assessing the multi-sectoral impacts of sand and dust storms and their socioeconomic implications. Specifically, we provide a multi-sectoral impact assessment of Crete during the occurrence of …

An optoacoustic sensor includes a liquid crystal (LC) cell formed between top and bottom plates of transparent material. A transverse grating formed across the LC cell that forms an optical transmission bandgap. A CL is aligned to form a spring-like, tunable Bragg grating that is naturally responsive to external agitations providing a spectral transition regime, or edge, in the optical transmission bandgap of the transverse grating that respond to broadband acoustic waves. The optoacoustic sensor includes a narrowband light source that is oriented to transmit light through the top plate, the LC cell, and the bottom plate. The optoacoustic sensor …

Accountable Data: The Politics And Pragmatics Of Disclosure Datasets, Lindsay Poirier Jun 2022

Accountable Data: The Politics And Pragmatics Of Disclosure Datasets, Lindsay Poirier

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

This paper attends specifically to what I call "disclosure datasets"- tabular datasets produced in accordance with laws requiring various kinds of disclosure. For the purposes of this paper, the most significant defining feature of disclosure datasets is that they aggregate information produced and reported by the same institutions they are meant to hold accountable. Through a series of case studies of disclosure datasets in the United States, I specifically draw attention to two concerns with disclosure datasets: First, for disclosure datasets, there is often political and social mobilization around the definitions that determine reporting thresholds, which in turn implicates what …

The Role Of Conformational Changes In Viral And Bacterial Protein Functions, Md Lokman Hossen Jun 2022

The Role Of Conformational Changes In Viral And Bacterial Protein Functions, Md Lokman Hossen

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Proteins do versatile work in cells. They require a cascade of structural changes to perform different tasks like binding to the other neighboring biomolecules, transporting small chemicals, activating a chemical reaction, etc. The structural conformations of proteins can be critical in changing their working ability. In this dissertation, I investigated the role of conformational changes of viral protein, e.g., spike and envelope protein of SARS-CoV-2, and bacterial protein, e.g., multidrug transporter and toxic extrusion protein- PfMATE from Pyrococcus furiosus. Also, I performed molecular docking-based drug screening targeting the E protein to suggest a set of drugs that can be repurposed …

Synthesis, Structure-Activity And Mechanism Studies Of Poly(Guanylurea)S Against Mycobacteria, Michelle M. Miranda

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be a serious threat worldwide, especially in developing countries. Current first-line treatment for TB infections is a multidrug regimen for 4-9 months; if not taken as prescribed, drug-resistant TB can emerge. Novel drugs with unconventional targets are warranted to lessen the lengthy and four-drug treatment. Antimicrobial polymers mimicking naturally occurring antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have gained much attention due to their enzymatic stability, tunability, cost-effectiveness, and unique mode of action - directly or indirectly - on bacterial membrane. However, selectivity and toxicity have limited their biological applications. Previously, our group synthesized a novel class of antimicrobial polymers, …

In the pursuit of achieving ever-increasing accuracy, large and complex neural networks are usually developed. Such models demand high computational resources and therefore cannot be deployed on edge devices. It is of great interest to build resource-efficient general purpose networks due to their usefulness in several application areas. In this work, we strive to effectively combine the strengths of both CNN and Transformer models and propose a new efficient hybrid architecture EdgeNeXt. Specifically in EdgeNeXt, we introduce split depth-wise transpose attention (SDTA) encoder that splits input tensors into multiple channel groups and utilizes depth-wise convolution along with self-attention across channel …

Chronological Accumulation Of Microplastics In The Gulf Of Mexico And Their Acute Effects On Coral Bleaching, Martina M. Plafcan Jun 2022

Chronological Accumulation Of Microplastics In The Gulf Of Mexico And Their Acute Effects On Coral Bleaching, Martina M. Plafcan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Microplastics have accumulated in the environment since plastic production began. They have spread to all areas of the globe from marine trenches to mountains and they can be harmful to organisms. However, research on microplastics has only recently begun so it is unclear how they have changed over time in many regions of the ocean and how current oceanic concentrations might affect marine life. Additionally, organisms such as corals are under stress and have been declining due to climate change, so it is not yet known if microplastics exacerbate these threats. My thesis addressed these gaps in the literature by …

Deformation Conditions Of Quartz-Rich Mylonites Of The Grenville Front Tectonic Zone And Application To The Crustal Strength, Xueke Chang Jun 2022

Deformation Conditions Of Quartz-Rich Mylonites Of The Grenville Front Tectonic Zone And Application To The Crustal Strength, Xueke Chang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis analyzes a suite of mylonites from the Grenville Front shear zone exposed southeast of Sudbury, Ontario. Lattice preferred orientations, titanium-in-quartz thermometer, and dynamically recrystallized grain size piezometer measurements were applied to obtain the deformation mechanisms, deformation temperatures (T), and differential stresses (σ), respectively. Results show that these mylonites were formed in the shear zone during the terminal stage of the Grenville Orogeny. The dominant deformation mechanism is by regime 2 dislocation creep. The deformation temperature is between 425-567 °C, and the differential stress is between 56-133 MPa. These results are discussed in the context of wet quartzite flow …

Equitable, Affordable And Climate-Cognizant Housing Construction, Shelby D. Green Jun 2022

Equitable, Affordable And Climate-Cognizant Housing Construction, Shelby D. Green

Arkansas Law Review

In this Article, I recount some of the history of unwise and improvident land use policy and practices that have led to gross inequities and to the climate-exposed state, not only in terms of where people were assigned spaces to live, but how. I go on to suggest that communities should be designed with intent, with regard for the threats of climate change as well as accessibility to those historically excluded.

Gull Plumages Are, And Are Not, What They Appear To Human Vision, Muir D. Eaton, Pilar Benites, Luke Campillo, Robert E. Wilson, Sarah A. Sonsthagen

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Clear correlations between human and bird visual assessments of color have been documented, and are often assumed, despite fundamental differences in human and avian visual physiology and morphology. Analyses of plumage colors with avian perceptual models have shown widespread hidden inter-sexual and inter-specific color variation among passerines perceived as monochromatic to humans, highlighting the uncertainty of human vision to predict potentially relevant variation in color. Herein, we use reflectance data from 13 Larus gull species as an exemplar data set to study concordance between human vision and avian visual modeling of feather colors near, or below, the human threshold for …

Earth Sciences Publications

Distinguishing between lava types and facies using remote sensing data is important for interpreting the emplacement history of lava flow-fields on Earth and other planetary bodies. Lava facies typically include a mixture of lava types and record the collective emplacement history of material preserved at a particular location. We seek to determine if lava facies in the 2014–2015 Holuhraun lava flow-field are discernible using radar roughness analysis. Furthermore, we also seek to distinguish between lava types using high resolution Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data. We extracted circular polarization ratios (CPR) from the Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar and …

Foraging Habitat Selection Of Shrubland Bird Community In Tropical Dry Forest, Anant Deshwal, Steven L. Stephenson, Pooja Panwar, Brett A. Degregorio, Ragupathy Kannan, John D. Willson Jun 2022

Foraging Habitat Selection Of Shrubland Bird Community In Tropical Dry Forest, Anant Deshwal, Steven L. Stephenson, Pooja Panwar, Brett A. Degregorio, Ragupathy Kannan, John D. Willson

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Habitat loss due to increasing anthropogenic disturbance is the major driver for bird population declines across the globe. Within the Eastern Ghats of India, shrubland bird communities are threatened by shrinking of suitable habitats due to increased anthropogenic disturbance and climate change. The development of an effective habitat management strategy is hampered by the absence of data for this bird community. To address this knowledge gap, we examined foraging sites for 14 shrubland bird species, including three declining species, in three study areas representing the shrubland type of forest community in the Eastern Ghats. We recorded microhabitat features within an …

The Natural History And Ecology Of Melanism In Red Wolf And Coyote Populations Of The Southeastern United States – Evidence For Gloger’S Rule, Joseph W. Hinton, Kyla M. West, Daniel J. Sullivan, Jacqueline L. Frair, Michael J. Chamberlain

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Background: Gloger’s rule postulates that animals should be darker colored in warm and humid regions where dense vegetation and dark environments are common. Although rare in Canis populations, melanism in wolves is more common in North America than other regions globally and is believed to follow Gloger’s rule. In the temperate forests of the southeastern United States, historical records of red wolf (Canis rufus) and coyote (Canis latrans) populations document a consistent presence of melanism. Today, the melanistic phenotype is extinct in red wolves while occurring in coyotes and red wolf-coyote hybrids who occupy the …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The usage of electronic cigarettes (ECs) has surged since their invention two decades ago. However, to date, the health effects of EC aerosol exposure are still not well understood because of insufficient data on the chemical composition of EC aerosols and the corresponding evidence of health risks upon exposure. Herein, we quantified the metals in primary and secondhand aerosols generated by three brands of ECs. By combining aerosol filter sampling and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), we assessed the mass of metals as a function of EC flavoring, nicotine concentration, device power, puff duration, and aging of the devices. …

Anomaly Detection In Sequential Data: A Deep Learning-Based Approach, Jayesh Soni Jun 2022

Anomaly Detection In Sequential Data: A Deep Learning-Based Approach, Jayesh Soni

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Anomaly Detection has been researched in various domains with several applications in intrusion detection, fraud detection, system health management, and bio-informatics. Conventional anomaly detection methods analyze each data instance independently (univariate or multivariate) and ignore the sequential characteristics of the data. Anomalies in the data can be detected by grouping the individual data instances into sequential data and hence conventional way of analyzing independent data instances cannot detect anomalies. Currently: (1) Deep learning-based algorithms are widely used for anomaly detection purposes. However, significant computational overhead time is incurred during the training process due to static constant batch size and learning …

Steel Module-To-Concrete Core Connection Methods In High Rise Modular Buildings: A Critical Review, Bishal Poudel, Seungtaek Lee, Jin Ouk Choi Jun 2022

Steel Module-To-Concrete Core Connection Methods In High Rise Modular Buildings: A Critical Review, Bishal Poudel, Seungtaek Lee, Jin Ouk Choi

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

Modularization in a high-rise building is different from a small building, as it is exposed to more lateral forces like wind and earthquakes. The integrity, robustness, and overall stability of the modules and their performance is based on the joining techniques and strong structural systems. High lateral stiff construction structures like concrete shear walls and frames, braced steel frames, and steel moment frames are used for the stability of high-rise modular buildings. Similarly, high-rise stick-built buildings have concrete cores and perimeter frames for lateral load strength and stiffness. Methods for general steel-concrete connections are available in many works of literature. …

First-Order Phase Transition And Fate Of False Vacuum Remnants, Kiyoharu Kawana, Philip Lu, Ke-Pan Xie Jun 2022

First-Order Phase Transition And Fate Of False Vacuum Remnants, Kiyoharu Kawana, Philip Lu, Ke-Pan Xie

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

False vacuum remnants in first-order phase transitions in the early Universe can form compact objects which may constitute dark matter. Such remnants form because particles develop large mass gaps between the two phases and become trapped in the old phase. We focus on remnants generated in a class of models with trapped dark sector particles, trace their development, and determine their ultimate fate. Depending on model and phase transition parameters, the evolutionary endpoint of these remnants can be primordial black holes, Fermi-balls, Q-balls, or thermal balls, and they all have the potential to constitute some portion or the whole of …
