Origin Of The Mount Merino Chert And Shale, Middle Ordovician, Eastern New York State, Dorothy M. Lang Jan 1969

Origin Of The Mount Merino Chert And Shale, Middle Ordovician, Eastern New York State, Dorothy M. Lang

Geology Theses and Dissertations

Mount Merino Chert and Shale, Middle Ordovician, is one of the most siliceous units of the Taconic sequence (eastern New York and western Vermont); it is composed of interbedded shale, siliceous hale, argillite and chert. Non-clastic quartz — aggregates of quartz having a.mosaic or felted texture — predominates in all beds, except `shale. All siliceous beds are finely laminated; most laminae are distinguished from adjacent laminae by the texture of the quartz groundmass, and the amount of clastics, carbonates, chlorite and sulphides. Statistical comparison of the textures of the quartz aggregates which occur with the other mineral components suggests that …

Trace Element Anomalies In The Igneous Wall Rocks Of Hydrothermal Veins In The Searchlight District, Nevada, Zuhair Al-Shaieb Jan 1969

Trace Element Anomalies In The Igneous Wall Rocks Of Hydrothermal Veins In The Searchlight District, Nevada, Zuhair Al-Shaieb

Masters Theses

"Two hundred and fifty vein and wall rock samples were collected from Chief of the Hill and the Duplex Mines of Searchlight District, Nevada. The samples were collected along lines approximately normal to the veins. They were analyzed for lead, copper, zinc, silver, gold, arsenic, selenium, and molybdenum using neutron actication analysis and atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc show well-developed anomalies in the wall rocks. In most cases, the concentration of these elements decreases gradually with increasing distance from the vein and reaches background values at a distance of 40-120 feet from the vein. Molybdenum and …

Vertical And Lateral Variations In A Welded Tuff, Ted Richard Dinkel Jan 1969

Vertical And Lateral Variations In A Welded Tuff, Ted Richard Dinkel

Masters Theses

"During the Tertiary period, nuée ardente type eruptions spread large deposits of welded tuffs over southwestern Utah and southeastern Nevada. The Wah Wah Springs Tuff is a member of one of the most extensive of these units, the Needles Range Formation of Oligocene age. Its known outcrop area is estimated at 13,000 square miles. Relief was slight in the area during the time of eruption to enable the flows to spread over so large an area. In an effort to analyze the lateral and vertical continuity of the member, a petrographic study was undertaken. The average composition of the Wah …

Stratigraphy And Correlation Of Precambrian Volcanic Rocks, Eminence, Missouri, Henry Hugh Fisher Jan 1969

Stratigraphy And Correlation Of Precambrian Volcanic Rocks, Eminence, Missouri, Henry Hugh Fisher

Masters Theses

"A portion of the Precambrian rocks located in the vicinity of Eminence, Missouri are studied and describes. These rocks are exposed as rhyolitic knobs protruding through hills of Ordovician sediments. The Precambrian rocks under study consist principally of rhyolite, with smaller amounts of tuff and creccis. The rhyolite is a potash rhyolite porphyry, both flow banded and unbanded, with phenocrysts of kaolinized orthoclase in a matrix of quartz and orthoclase. The tuffs contain devitrified glass shards and occasional ash balls such as those exhibited at Cott Mountain. A stratigraphic sequence was determined with the oldest rocks to the south at …

A Fluorescent Tracer Study At A Tidal Inlet (Rudee Inlet, Virginia), James W. Bunch Jan 1969

A Fluorescent Tracer Study At A Tidal Inlet (Rudee Inlet, Virginia), James W. Bunch

OES Theses and Dissertations

Patterns and approximate rates of littoral transport south of Rudee Inlet. Virginia were investigated with fluorescent tracers. Sand movement was traced under a variety of longshore current and wave conditions. Patterns of tracer dispersal reflected the importance of wave height, breaker angle, and longshore current velocity on modes of littoral transport. A direct relationship between angle of breaker incidence. generated longshore current. and direction of tracer sand movement was found. Onshore offshore paths were taken by tracer material during periods of weak longshore currents and small breaker angles while alongshore paths were followed by tracer material during strong longshore currents …

A New Rhinoceros From The Nebraska Miocene, Lloyd G. Tanner Jan 1969

A New Rhinoceros From The Nebraska Miocene, Lloyd G. Tanner

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum

A new species of rhinoceros, Menoceras marslandensis, is here proposed. It is based upon a nearly complete skull from the upper part of the Marsland Formation, Hemingford Group (Miocene), of Box Butte County, Nebraska. The new species was probably derived from Menoceras arikarense (Barbour), collected from the Agate Springs Quarries (Arikaree Group, Harrison Formation) of Sioux County, Nebraska, with which both Diceratherium niobrarensis Peterson and D. cooki Peterson are likely synonymous. From Menoceras arikarense, the presumed ancestral stock, Menoceras marslandensis differs in possessing the following characters: (1) very long, fused but slightly cleft, nasals, with flattened, rugose areas …

A Study Of Earth Science Teachers And Practices In North Dakota For The Academic Year 1968-1969, Howard C. Reith

Theses and Dissertations

In the period between 1961-1964 the North Dakota department of Public Instruction initiated long overdue changes in the science curriculum for the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades of the public schools. Titese involved changes from general science to the life, earth, and physical sciences. During this same period there was a re vitalization of interest in earth science at the national level, with the public school enrollment rising from several thousand to well over one million.

Because of the rapid national growth in earth science enrollment, and the status of earth science in North Dakota, a study to determine the …

The Background Concentrations Of Copper, Lead, And Zinc In Streams Of The "New Lead Belt", Missouri, Nicholas Howard Tibbs

Masters Theses

"This study was initiated to determine the background concentrations of copper, lead, and zinc in the streams of the Viburnum Trend or New Lead Belt of southeast Missouri. Analytical methods were developed for atomic adsorption spectroscopy. These methods initially consisted of coextraction of cooper, lead, and zinc using the APDC/MIBK system, and finally of extraction of copper by APDC/MIBK and direct analysis of lead and zinc using the newly developed "Sampling Boat" technique. The data obtained from these analyses were arranged in histograms and critically analyzed. The background concentrations were established to be 4-6 ppb for all three elements. Methods …

The Tiger's Back "A Report On Australian Organizations For Metropolitan Planning Administration", Robert D. Kuzelka

Conservation and Survey Division

The Australian town planning scene presents many interesting and unusual aspects to the city planner from the United States of America. Aspects which because of familiarity and proximity may not strike the Australian town planner as being either interesting, or unusual. This report will discuss some of these aspects as they seem to be affecting each major metropolitan region which includes the capital city in each of the six Australian States. Throughout the report, "metropolitan region" refers to the unit, or units of Local Government which are included in the planning area of each organization which is considered in this …

A Comparison Of The Late Wisconsinan Molluscan Fauna Of The Missouri Coteau District (North Dakota) With A Modern Alaskan Analogue, Samuel J. Tuthill Jan 1969

A Comparison Of The Late Wisconsinan Molluscan Fauna Of The Missouri Coteau District (North Dakota) With A Modern Alaskan Analogue, Samuel J. Tuthill

Theses and Dissertations

Study of forty fossiliferous sites in late Wisconsinan sediments from the Missouri Coteau district in central North Dakota has defined the molluscan fauna of the period of geologic time between 12,000 and 9,000 C14 years before the present. The fauna includes twenty-eight taxa of nonmarine gastropods and bivalves and is dominated by branchiates. The modern molluscan fauna of the Missouri Coteau district in North Dakota lacks four species which were resident in the late Wisconsinan and contains no unionids, one additional aquatic species, and is strongly dominated by pulmonate gastropods.

The geology of the Missouri Coteau has been interpreted as …

The Upper Red River Formation (Ordovician) In Western North Dakota, Harlan K. Friestad

Theses and Dissertations

The upper Red River Formation in Western North Dakota consists of cyclic sedimentary rocks having four main porosity zones which contain most of the oil and gas found in the formation. It was divided into three distinct units that were traced throughout western North Dakota on mechanical logs. In ascending order these are the P, R, and F intervals which consist of alternating sequences of dolomites, limestones, and anhydrites. Facies changes, occur within the P interval both on a regional and a local scale, typically from dense limestones to porous dolomites.

Washboard Moraines In Northeastern North Dakota, Dennis N. Nielsen Jan 1969

Washboard Moraines In Northeastern North Dakota, Dennis N. Nielsen

Theses and Dissertations

The descriptive term 11washboard moraine" has been applied to small transverse till ridges occurring in glaciated regions of North America. Washboard moraines have, in the past, been confused with similar transverse features such as ribbed moraines and De Geer moraines. No previous work had been done on washboard moraines in North Dakota prior to this study. Objectives of this study were to (1) map the distribution of washboard moraines in a selected study area,(2) describe the morphology and composition of washboard moraines, (3) determine the origin !or washboard moraines, and (4) compare data obtained in North Dakota with previously published …

A Geochemical Study Of The Maquoketa Formation In Pike County, Missouri, John Siegfried Trapp Jan 1969

A Geochemical Study Of The Maquoketa Formation In Pike County, Missouri, John Siegfried Trapp

Masters Theses

"Statistical interpretation of geochemical data was used to determine the environment of deposition of the Maquoketa Formation in Pike County, Missouri. A cyclic sequence was noted which can be best explained by cyclic climatic changes. During the study it was found that elemental relationships which would be expected in a freshly deposited sediment can be found in core samples. In samples from outcrops and quarry faces these relationships have been destroyed. As these elemental relationships reflect mineralogical relationships, serious doubts have arisen as to the validity of petrographic studies of samples taken from outcrops. This study indicates weathering may be …

Stratigraphy And Economic Geology Of Uranium-Bearing Sediments In The Poison Spider District, Natrona County, Wyoming, Carlos Enrique Reijenstein D'Acierno

Masters Theses

"Geologic, stratigraphic, and mineralogic characteristics of the Eocene Wind River and Oligocene White River Formations were determined for the southern portion of the Poison Spider District, Natrona County, Wyoming. Sieve analysis and heavy mineral techniques were used to recognize stratigraphic units, determine their environment of deposition, obtain a better knowledge of the grain size distribution, and to identify a possible source area for the sediments. Particular emphasis was concentrated on the evaluation and interpretation of the available geophysical data (gamma ray and resistivity logs), and geological information which had led to the establishment of several relationships between the local geology …

Stratigraphy And Structure Of The Northwestern Guadalupe Mountains, New Mexico, Klyne Headley Oct 1968

Stratigraphy And Structure Of The Northwestern Guadalupe Mountains, New Mexico, Klyne Headley

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The northwestern Guadalupe Mountains of southeastern New Mexico are part of a large regional cuesta that slopes gently northeast. The crest of the northern escarpment rises abruptly to more than 2,200 feet above Pinon Valley.

The rugged west-facing escarpment has been carved in an uplifted fault block composed entirely of Permian sedimentary rocks having an aggregate thickness of about 1,700 feet. Dark-red to buff siltstone, gray dolomite, and white to gray gypsum compose the Yeso Formation. Conformably overlying these rocks is the dark-brown limestone and dolomite sequence of the San Andres Formation. The Glorieta Sandstone which usually occurs between these …
