Facies Analysis; Fredericksburg Limestones; Callahan Divide, Texas, Andre Louis Boutte

During Fredericksburg (Early Cretaceous) time the entire Callahan Divide area of west-central Texas was the site of clayey, lime-mud accumulation in a normal-marine, shallow-shelf environment. Lateral homogeneity of the quiet-water environment was soon interrupted locally by the deposition of bioclastic lime-sands in a linear, highly agitated shoal-zone coinciding with a portion of the axis of a regional, positive, Paleozoic structural feature known as the Concho Arch. Localized shoal conditions persisted throughout most of Fredericksburg time and resulted in the deposition of a thick sequence of grainstones and packstones collectively referred to in this paper as the Callahan Complex. Origin Of Reeflike Masses In The Upper Member Of The San Andres Formation, Central Guadalupe Mountains, Eddy County, New Mexico, Richard Lane Squires

Several reeflike masses crop out in the upper part of the Upper member of the San Andres Formation in the Last Chance Canyon area, southeastern New Mexico. The reeflike masses are situated on the Northwest shelf adjacent to the Delaware basin of Permian age. Based on the compilation of the field and laboratory data, it was concluded that the reeflike masses are not reefs at all and such exposures are termed pseudoreefs. No criteria were found which could be used to differentiate the masses from surrounding, laterally equivalent strata since both consist of relatively unfossiliferous dolomitized mudstones and wackestones. The genus Hemipterodectes Berla is redefined and the type species, H. squalocauda is figured. A new genus, Diproctophyllodes (type species, Proctophyllodes (Alloptes) dielytra Trouessert, 1885) is described; D. exquisita (Berla), 1959 is synomized with D. dielytra; and D. oxyrunci, new species, is described.

Biometrical study of morphology and development in a sample of 100 cranidia, 94 pygidia, 26 free cheeks, and 9 complete specimens of the trilobite Ameura sangamonensis (Meek and Worthen) from the Bonner Springs Shale (Pennsylvanian; Missouri Series) in eastern Nebraska indicates that the dominant growth pattern was isometric. Evidence supporting this conclusion consists of rectilinear size relations among eight pairs of cranidial dimensions, three pairs of pygidial dimensions, and three pairs of dimensions of the free cheeks. Qualitative changes in pygidial morphology during development include a progressive decrease in prominence of the border, increasing width of the posterior border relative …

A systematic study of the acarine subfamily Trouessartinae (except Trouessartia) of the family Proctophyllodidae is presented. Diagnoses are given for the subfamily, five named genera and four new genera. In the Pedernal Hills, in the eastern part of north-central New Mexico, five Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rock types occur. Stratigraphically, oldest to youngest, they include medium-grained granite gneiss; quartzite, quartz-mica schist, and quartz-specular hematite schist; schist unit consisting mainly of quartz-muscovite schist and greenstone; intrusive granite which includes rocks ranging from quartz diorite to alkali granite; and cataclasite representing dynamically metamorphosed rocks.

The Jicarilla Mountains in west-central Lincoln County, New Mexico, consist of Permian, Triassic, and Cretaceous sediments intruded by Tertiary sills, dikes, laccoliths, and stocks. The upper 50 feet of the Yeso Formation is exposed and is conformably overlain by the San Andres Formation which consists of the lower Sandstone, and middle Limestone, and upper Gypsum members. The Permian Artesia Formation, which is about 300 feet thick, unconformably overlies the Gypsum member. Unconformably overlying the Artesia Formation is a 200-foot section of the Triassic Santa Rosa Formation. The boundary between the Santa Rosa Formation and the overlying Chinle Formation is gradational. …

The White Oaks-Patos Mountain area is in the north central portion of the Sierra Blanca basin in central Lincoln County, New Mexico. The rocks consist of Permian, Triassic, and Cretaceous strata intruded by early Tertiary sills, dikes, and laccoliths. The 2,900 feet of sedimentary strata include 750 to 800 feet of Permian rocks, 550 feet of Triassic rocks, and 1700 feet of Cretaceous rocks. Extensive Tertiary Quaternary pediments cover much of the area.
The mapped area lies in the center of a large concentration of Tertiary intrusive bodies known as the ln County porphyry belt, including Patos Mountain. Igneous rocks …

The southern Pilot Range is a slightly sinuous, north-trending mountain range located in the northeastern part of the Great Basin.
Approximately 18,500 feet of miogcosynclinal sedimentary rocks representing every system from late Precambrian to Permian(?) are exposed in the southern Pilot Range. Because of intense faulting, many of the stratigraphic relationships between the formations are impossible to determine. Mesozoic and Tertiary strata are absent; however, Pleistocene Lake Bonneville deposits are wide spread, although thinly distributed. Small igneous stocks, dikes, and sills are common only in the southern two-thirds of the map area. Stocks are principally granodioritic. In several cases the …

Two areas along the Blacksmith Fork River, in the Bear River Range southeast of Logan, Utah, were studied as sites for a storage dam and reservoir. An earth dam, 150-200 feet high, and a reservoir of 15,000-20,000 acre-feet are contemplated by the Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Department of Interior.
The lower area, located about 7 miles east of the mountain front, involves two possible dam sites on limestone. Thick overburden is present in the canyon bottom and on the right abutments. When Lake Bonneville spilled through Red Rock Pass at the north end of Cache Valley, the major part of the lake in Salt Lake Valley had to drain from west-to-east through Cutler Dam Quadrangle. Here two major saddles connect the two valleys: (1) Bear River Narrows, at about +4380 feet; and (2) Cache Butte-Wellsville Mountain Pass 4.2 miles south, at about +4970 feet. Spillover levels at both places are cut into older rocks.
Only two morphostratigraphic units are recognized widely in the quadrangle. These represent high stands at the Bonneville level (+5180 ± 20 feet) and at the Provo level …

Turbidity currents, surface, and subsurface currents carry detritus from the land across the continental shelf to the adjacent continental slope where slumps and turbidity currents transport the sediment downslope for hundreds of miles to greater depths, and deep geostrophic contour currents transport it thousands of miles down-current in a direction parallel to the bathymetric contours. The combined effect of these processes has been to create a wide, thick, geosynclinal apron of sediment at the base of the continental slope.
Subsidence of the continental shelf has continued since mid-Mesozoic, carrying down Lower Cretaceous reefal limestones to depths of 5,000 meters off …

This paper describes the major structures of Colorado and Utah and presents a theory of origin based on new knowledge of the layering and constitution of the upper mantle and lower crust. It proposes that the Ancestral Rockies and the more modem ones of Cretaceous and early Tertiary age of both the shelf of Colorado and eastern Utah and the miogeosyncline of western Utah are the result of vertical uplifts of the silicic crust. The uplifts are caused by the rise, from the upper mantle, of basalt in scattered places to the base of the silicic crust. This rise domed …

The Great Basin is bordered on the west by the Sierra Nevada and on the east by the Colorado Plateau and Rocky Mountains. These tectonically different provinces are genetically related; basin and range structure evolved as part of the tectonic development of western North America.
The Precambrian framework here is not well known, but northeasterly geosynclinal trends, east- west orogenic trends, and northwesterly fracture zones can be projected from the craton or inferred.

The Sierra Nevada is a huge block of the earth’s crust that has broken free on the east and has been tilted westward. It is composed chiefly of Mesozoic granitic rocks and Paleozoic and Mesozoic metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rocks. The granitic rocks constitute the Sierra Nevada batholith, which is part of a more or less continuous belt of plutonic rocks that extends northward from Baja California through the Sierra Nevada at a small angle to the axis of the range and into western Nevada. The batholith is localized in the axial region of a complexly faulted synclinorium. It is …

The Appalachian folded belt of southwestern Virginia exemplifies most of the structural and stratigraphic features that are considered typical of the Appalachians as a whole. The folded belt which is only 36 miles wide along the valley course of New River is generally well-defined on the southeast by the western foothills of the Blue Ridge and on the northwest side by a sharp structural front beyond which the beds are relatively gently folded.

Metasediments of Middle Precambrian, and possibly some of earlier age, form an arcuate trending belt across Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska. These were intruded by granites of several ages that appear to be part of a continuous wave of Late Precambrfan igneous activity. Late Precambrian events that can be delineated include, besides the igneous activity and formation of iron deposits, development of a Keweenawan basin that extended from Lake Superior into eastern Kansas; igneous activity and metamorphism of Grenville age in the eastern Midcontinent; development of a major fault lineament extending northeastward from northeast Arkansas into the Canadian shield outcrop area …

Western California between the 37th and 40th parallels is part of an active mobile orogenic belt in which sedimentation, deformation, volcanism, and plutonism have been intimately associated since the mid-Mesozoic. At present, the region is still undergoing folding and warping as shown by data from geodetic triangulation networks and geomorphology, and several major high-angle fault zones are seismically active. These faults continue to acquire displacement both suddenly during earthquakes and slowly by gentle creep with no recordable shocks. Pleistocene beds and terraces at places are steeply warped. "The continuous shear wave generator was designed to be the first instrument capable of producing a continuous high frequency signal below the weathered layer of the earth. This is to be accomplished by placing the instrument in a bore hole and lowering it below the weathered layer where the higher frequencies are severely attenuated. The generator produced a measurable signal output with the output force being approximately 11 pounds force. Testing of the generator showed the necessity of using a spring system with a low natural frequency. The testing also indicated several improvements which should be made in the generator …

"The work in this research project was aimed at designing a Downhole Electromagnetic Shear Wave Generator capable of delivering a wide frequency band, random, continuous signal. This Exciter was built using a compressed-air driven piston assembly for downhole application. The device was tested in the laboratory in a concrete test facility. It proved to be capable of transmitting a continuous, measurable stress into the concrete in a 100 to 5,000 hertz frequency band"--Abstract, page ii.
