Geochemical Prospecting Applied To The Illinois-Kentucky Fluorspar Area, Matthew Peter Nackowski
Geochemical Prospecting Applied To The Illinois-Kentucky Fluorspar Area, Matthew Peter Nackowski
Doctoral Dissertations
"This study was completed to determine whether geochemical methods of prospecting could be applied to the search for fluorspar deposits in the Illinois-Kentucky fluorspar district.
During the course of the study, aspects of the geochemical cycle of fluorine under the climatic environment encountered were noted in the zone of weathering.
The Illinois-Kentucky fluorspar district supplies a large portion of the fluorite consumed in the United States. The producing deposits are of two geologic types. The vein deposits occur as nearly vertical tabular lenses or pods which occupy fractures. These deposits may reach the bedrock surface, but in any case, the …
A Study Of The Effect Of Jointing On The Blasting Of Granite, Graniteville, Missouri, Avery Ala Drake
A Study Of The Effect Of Jointing On The Blasting Of Granite, Graniteville, Missouri, Avery Ala Drake
Masters Theses
"Purpose of investigation: The purpose of this investigation is to attempt to determine the influence that joints exert upon the blasting of granite and if joints are induced by blasting. The problem grew out of an explosive evaluation project that was conducted by the Mining Department, Missouri School of Mines. In late May 1950, the project was moved into the granite area near Graniteville, Missouri. It became apparent upon study of this area that the jointing would have certain effects upon the results obtained. Dr. J. D. Forrester, Chairman, Department of Mining Engineering, Missouri School of Mines, Rolla, Missouri, suggested …
A New Basic Copper Phosphate Mineral From Santa Rita, New Mexico, David B. Givens
A New Basic Copper Phosphate Mineral From Santa Rita, New Mexico, David B. Givens
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Supergene minerals are not common, nor are they rare at Santa Rita, New Mexico. Kerr (1950,307) reports the presence of cuprite, melaconite, native copper, chrysocolla, machite and azurite. There is also smithsonite present.
The physical appearance of the mineral, coupled with preliminary determinations of the indices of refraction, gave a rough correspondence with dihydrite (Larson and Berman, 1934, 135). However, enough discrepancy existed to warrant taking powder and Weissenberg X-Ray pictures. From these it was evident immediately that the specimen was a new mineral species.

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum
I T SEEMS desirable at this time to present a graphic resume of the Nebraska Pleistocene, together with a summary of the stratigraphic sequences of the fossil vertebrates. This report is based on data taken from various publications' in addition to information gathered by the present writers during the past fifteen or more field seasons. Intensive work has been done in the past five years in connection with recovery of paleontological material in the areas where government dams are under construction (Schultz, Lueninghoener, and Frankforter, 1948; Schultz and Frankforter, 1948; Holder and Wike, 1949). The information in the present paper …
Geology Of The Pre-Cambrian Rocks Of The Northern End Of The Sandia Mountains, Bernalillo And Sandoval Counties, New Mexico, Philip T. Hayes
Geology Of The Pre-Cambrian Rocks Of The Northern End Of The Sandia Mountains, Bernalillo And Sandoval Counties, New Mexico, Philip T. Hayes
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Most of the pre-Cambrian metamorphic rocks of the northern end of the Sandia Mountains crop out on and adjacent to a prominent spur, called the Rincon, which lies to the west of the main mountain mass. These metamorphic rocks which consist of quartzite, schist, and greenstone are considered to be the result of moderate regional metamorphism of clastic sedimentary rocks and possibly some basic flows and stills. These rocks are here tentatively named the Juan Tabo sequence and are Archeozoic or early Proterozoic age. The Sandia granite, which lies to the east and south of the Juan Tabo sequence, was …
The Occurrences Of Non-Metallic Minerals In Montana, Samuel T. Mitchell
The Occurrences Of Non-Metallic Minerals In Montana, Samuel T. Mitchell
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
This thesis is essentially an abstract of the literature concerning occurrences in Montana of minerals with a non-metallic luster. The discussions give a general description of the occurrences of minerals as reported by the various references, but is not complete as less than 40 percent of the non-metallic minerals known to exist in Montana are discussed.
Progress Report: Chemical Quality Of The Surface Waters In The Loup River Basin, Nebraska, John G. Connor
Progress Report: Chemical Quality Of The Surface Waters In The Loup River Basin, Nebraska, John G. Connor
United States Geological Survey: Publications
The Loup River and its tributaries transport moderate amounts of siliceous minerals from the sand hills region of north-central Nebraska to the Platte River near Columbus, Nebr. Predominant chemical characteristics of these waters are a high percentage of silica, moderate hardness, and a low percentage of sodium. The composition of the Loup River water is influenced by the geologic formations through which ground water, a major contributor to the flows of the Loup River branches, has percolated. Investigation of water quality at or near proposed dam sites in the Loup River basin indicates that if soil and drainage conditions are …
Microfauna Of The Colorado Shale In The Sunburst Dome Area, Montana, Merle W. Emmert
Microfauna Of The Colorado Shale In The Sunburst Dome Area, Montana, Merle W. Emmert
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
It has been hoped that a micropaleontological study of the shales of the Upper Cretaceous Colorado Group in northern Montana would reveal certain faunal zones which would serve as markers in an otherwise drab, undifferentiated, 1800 feet of grey, fissile shale. This paper presents the results of a study of the microfauna in certain samples from this shale in the Sunburst Dome area north of Shelby, Montana.
The Elkhorn Mine Of Jefferson County, Montana, David D. Walker
The Elkhorn Mine Of Jefferson County, Montana, David D. Walker
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
In 1901, after yielding metals valued in excess of five million dollars, it was considered worked out. Since that time the mine has passed through the hands of several owners, none of whom have failed to realize a profit from it. Although at no time since its zenith did it ever regain its once great production, it did provide a livelihood for those who worked it. Now with the American Smelting and Refining Company interested in it, perhaps it will once again become an important producer.

Anisotropism In Garnets, Arthur B. Merkle
Anisotropism In Garnets, Arthur B. Merkle
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Six anisotropic garnets are studied by optical, thermal, and X-ray diffraction methods in an attempt to determine the cause of anisotropism. The garnets are all ungrandites with compositions ranging from chromian grossularite to nearly pure andradite, the composition having been estimated from indices of refraction and unit cell dimensions. In all cases the birefringence is 0.004 or less. Both positive and negative uniaxial and biaxial figures are sometimes observed. Heating of the garnets at 900°C for periods of 96 to 264 hours reduced the anisotropism in five of the six garnets studied; this observation is in agreement with previously reported …
Sulphidizing Of Cerussite, Emil A. Kovacevich
Sulphidizing Of Cerussite, Emil A. Kovacevich
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
The oxide minerals, such as cerussite, are not as amenable to flotation as the sulphide minerals. Sulphidization is the usual means used today to increase the recovery of an oxide flotation; however, sulphidization under the most advantageous conditions does not yield very satisfactory recoveries.

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the reasons for the ground water variations in the area north of Flathead Lake, Montana. Several methods were used in pursuing this investigation. Hydrographs were made of the various wells showing the season to season change as well as the year to year variation.
Faunal Studies Of The Lower Jefferson Limestones, James L. Eymann
Faunal Studies Of The Lower Jefferson Limestones, James L. Eymann
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
The exact geologic age of the Jefferson limestone in Montana has not been definitely determined, other than it is probably of upper, but possibly in part of middle Devonian age. Although not of immediate or apparent economic importance, the determination of the exact age of the Jefferson limestone may be of much value in connection with the discoveries of large quantities of oil in Devonian strata in the northern Great Plains and, in particular, with the extensive deep drilling in northeastern Montana which is anticipated during the summer of 1951.
A Mineralogical Investigation Of Some Montana Hydrobiotites, John W. Baker
A Mineralogical Investigation Of Some Montana Hydrobiotites, John W. Baker
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
Vermiculite is one of the most recent important nonmetallic minerals to be exploited for use in the industrial world. For this reason, the fund of knowledge relating to this mineral is rather limited. This paper represents the results of laboratory studies that were undertaken to contribute data to this fund of knowledge.
Differential Thermal Analysis Of Some Carbonate Minerals, Paul L. Vandeveer
Differential Thermal Analysis Of Some Carbonate Minerals, Paul L. Vandeveer
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
Thermal analysis is a relatively new method of determining the general composition of certain mineral substances. As is demonstrated by much of the literature previously written, clays and carbonates are especially adaptable to this method. The full importance of the method is not as yet realized, but it is rapidly approaching that point.
The Gallium-Indium Constitutional Diagram, Richard E. Gaffney
The Gallium-Indium Constitutional Diagram, Richard E. Gaffney
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
Because of the discrepancy as to whether there is solid solubility in the gallium-indium system, and the fact that no alloys with less than 1% indium were ever investigated; the possibility of solid solubility in either or both ends of the diagram was not overlooked. According to Hume-Rothery, two alloys with the same relative positions on the Periodic Chart should have about the same alloying habits.
Electrowinning With Amalgam Electrode, Ralph V. Anderson Jr.
Electrowinning With Amalgam Electrode, Ralph V. Anderson Jr.
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
Amalgam Metallurgy, a relatively new expression in the technology of metal extraction, was first chosen to describe certain new processes developed at the Duisburg Copper Works in Germany. The idea of using mercury, a costly and poisonous metal, as an intermediate in heavy chemical industry and in polarography are of recent origin; with the exception of a series of patents of little significance and occasional comments in the literature, the work is hardly known.
Metal Production From Ore Deposits In Different Host Rocks In Montana, Robert F. Gale
Metal Production From Ore Deposits In Different Host Rocks In Montana, Robert F. Gale
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
It is known that many different kinds of rocks serve as host to the ore deposits of Montana, but the relative importance of each of these kinds of rock as a host for ore deposits has never been described in any published report.
Ferromagnetic Alloys In The System Cu-Mn-Zn, W. Michael Yim
Ferromagnetic Alloys In The System Cu-Mn-Zn, W. Michael Yim
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
The purpose of this investigation is to determine whether ferromagnetic alloys exist in the ternary system Cu-Mn-Zn analogous to the other Heusler alloys. The work in this thesis is a preliminary investigation on these alloys using a common metallographic research technique and augmented with X-ray methods.
Chemical Analysis Of Igneous Rocks And Variation Diagrams Of Petrographic Provinces Of Montana, Frederick M. Hilpert
Chemical Analysis Of Igneous Rocks And Variation Diagrams Of Petrographic Provinces Of Montana, Frederick M. Hilpert
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
A total of 179 chemical analyses of igneous rocks are available for the state of Montana, but these analyses do not cover the entire state in a satisfactory manner. There has been an emphasis on the central part of the state, and an almost complete lack of interest in the southern portion of Montana.
Determination Of The Activities Of Indium And Mercury And The Vapor Pressures Of Mercury Over These Amalgams From 0.00216 To 0.02494 Mole Fraction Indium At 25 C And From 0.00067 To 0.02410 Mole Fraction Indium At 70 C By Electromotive Force Measurements, Arthur H. Lutts
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
This work was performed to determine by experimental means the activities of both indium and mercury and the vapor pressures of mercury over these amalgams at 25 and 70 C.
The Electrolytic Purification Of An Impure Cadmium Sulfate Solution With A Cell Utilizing A Mercury Cathode And A Lead Anode, W. D. Mcmaster
The Electrolytic Purification Of An Impure Cadmium Sulfate Solution With A Cell Utilizing A Mercury Cathode And A Lead Anode, W. D. Mcmaster
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
Cadmium is produced solely as a by-product and all cadmium of commerce is obtained from zinc ores. It is a rare occurrence when zinc deposits are found which do not contain some cadmium.
