Aerial Spraying Trial., G A. Pearce

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Conclusions 1. The volume of application with water affected the results obtained. The visual results of Treatment 1 suggested it was not an acceptable commercial result and the plant counts support this conclusion. Treatments 2 and 3 looked very similar and were very similar and were very acceptable results. 2. The height of spraying affected the results in that where the plane had to start climbing to pass over trees, the effectiveness dropped off. 3. Spray drift could be a problem because of the risk of causing damage to trees and native vegetation. Severe damage was seen on trees at …

The Effect Of Soil Acidity On Crop And Pasture Production., W Porter, R Klemm

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

SUMMARY The effects of lime and molybdenum applications on wheat and subterranean Clover were studied further. Wheat. In relation to lime use, my aim is to develop soil tests to be used to predict when a soil requires lime to produce maximum yield, and to predict the optimum rate of lime. Using the results from field trials commenced in 1980 and 1981 the soil parameters which may be used to predict lime responses in wheat have been narrowed down. From the relationships between soil data and lime responses it appears that soil ph (measured in 1:5 H20 or 1:5 N …

Forestry For Wildlife Habitat Improvement. Nebraska Cooperative Extension Service Ec 81-1747, Ec 80-1747, Frank A. Hershey, Howard L. Wiegers

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Wildlife cannot exist without food and protective cover. Natural and planted woodlands contribute significantly to these essentials. This circular describes habitat needs of wildlife, recommends forestry practices for habitat improvement, and gives examples of practices to improve habitat for pheasant, quail, and deer.

Variety, rather than uniformity of vegetation, benefits most wildlife species. Management which results in a diverse plant community with many stages of growth can increase the numbers and species of wildlife. Techniques which create improved conditions for woodland wildlife are fundamentally the same as those designed to grow good timber.

History Of Animal Experimentation Control In The U.K., Judith E. Hampson Jan 1981

History Of Animal Experimentation Control In The U.K., Judith E. Hampson

Laws and Legislation Collection

The legislative control of the use of animals in experiments in the UK lies in the Cruelty to Animals Act of 1876. Animal Welfare groups and individuals in Britain have pressed for reform of this law almost since its inception 105 years ago, and the British government has recently agreed to bring this legislation up to date. Any new or amended legislation could have far-reaching implications, both for laboratory animal welfare and upon the scientific community and is therefore of considerable importance both in this country and overseas. No proper appreciation of the problem would be possible without reference to …

Erforschung biologischer Ressourcen der Mongolei / Exploration into the Biological Resources of Mongolia, ISSN 0440-1298

Erforschung biologischer Ressourcen der Mongolei / Exploration into the Biological Resources of Mongolia, ISSN 0440-1298

First paragraph:

Is Nature Our Birthright?, Nancy Heneson Jan 1981

Is Nature Our Birthright?, Nancy Heneson

Ecology Collection

It is of course impossible to escape the notion of self-interest in our relationship with nature. In fact, it is "unnatural," if one understands (and, one is forced to say nowadays, believes in) evolution. However, there is no real justification for either disguising this as stewardship or perverting it into dominionism. Every organism has an impact on the environment, and it is not only idealistic but biologically nonsensical to argue that we should leave everything alone. However, when decisions on policy are made which direct the future use of land, plants and animals, at least let the rationale not be …

Regulation Of Biomedical Research, Andrew N. Rowan Jan 1981

Regulation Of Biomedical Research, Andrew N. Rowan

Experimentation Collection

The idea of abolishing or simplifying government regulations has a large following in Washington at the moment. As Reagan and his minions start to prune the growth of the past twenty years, we must hope that they are able to distinguish between the healthy growth which provides needed support and the unnecessary growth which strangles necessary initiatives. However, there is one area where we need more regulation rather than less, namely, biomedical research. In calling for more regulation in biomedical research, I do not mean the imposition of outside controls by allegedly ignorant and insensitive bureaucrats (although I think some …
