Mediastinal Lymph Node Detection And Segmentation Using Deep Learning, Al-Akhir Nayan Jan 2022

Mediastinal Lymph Node Detection And Segmentation Using Deep Learning, Al-Akhir Nayan

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Automatic lymph node (LN) segmentation and detection for cancer staging are critical. In clinical practice, computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET) imaging detect abnormal LNs. Despite its low contrast and variety in nodal size and form, LN segmentation remains a challenging task. Deep convolutional neural networks frequently segment items in medical photographs. Most state-of-the-art techniques destroy image's resolution through pooling and convolution. As a result, the models provide unsatisfactory results. Keeping the issues in mind, a well-established deep learning technique UNet++ was modified using bilinear interpolation and total generalized variation (TGV) based upsampling strategy to segment and detect …

Y-X-Y Encoding For Identifying Types Of Sentence Similarity, Thanaporn Jinnovart Jan 2022

Y-X-Y Encoding For Identifying Types Of Sentence Similarity, Thanaporn Jinnovart

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The task of finding semantic similarity of any two arbitrary sentences consists of two main steps, which are encoding sentences to produce feature vectors of equal length and measuring the similarity, respectively. The quality of an encoding technique can determine the degree of success a model can achieve in measuring the similarity. This is because a good representation is subjected to how finely established the spectrum of similarities is. The clearer the definition of similarity is, the better the representations can be constructed. This, in turn, helps distinguish between types of sentences. Generally, all existing methods for measuring similarity were …

Typology And Formation Of Pothole Along The Mekong River And Erosional Remnant In Sandstone Of Khorat Group, Ubon Ratchathani Province, Northeastern Thailand, Sirawat Udomsak

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Phachan Samphanbok Geopark showcases fascinating erosional features, such as a multitude of potholes in the Mekong River. Additionally, it is home to the largest pedestal rock in Thailand, located in Ubon Ratchathani province in the northeastern part of the country, near the border between Thailand and Laos PDR. The formation of potholes is attributed to the erosive force of swirling sediment within fractures caused by vortex currents. In this research study on pothole evolution, the potholes in the Mekong River were categorized into two main groups: structural control potholes and non-structural control potholes. These types were further divided into five …

Discrimination Of Geographical Origins Of Coffees By Paper Spray Mass Spectrometry, Rujirat Pumbua Jan 2022

Discrimination Of Geographical Origins Of Coffees By Paper Spray Mass Spectrometry, Rujirat Pumbua

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Coffee is one of the most important agricultural commodities, and the demand for specialty coffee and single-origin coffees is also increasing significantly. Methods that can effectively differentiate the origins of coffee is tremendously beneficial. In this work, paper spray – mass spectrometry (PS-MS) was used as a tool for collecting chemical profiles of coffees for differentiating their origins. The acquired data was then processed by principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA), resulting in successful identification of the origins of coffee with prediction accuracies of 80-100%. Studies with the aforementioned performance include the discrimination of Arabica vs Robusta, …

Particle Swarm Optimization For Critical Experiment Design, Cole Michael Kostelac Jan 2022

Particle Swarm Optimization For Critical Experiment Design, Cole Michael Kostelac

Masters Theses

“Critical experiments are used by nuclear data evaluators and criticality safety engineers to validate nuclear data and computational methods. Many of these experiments are designed to maximize the sensitivity to a certain nuclide-reaction pair in an energy range of interest. Traditionally, a parameter sweep is conducted over a set of experimental variables to find a configuration that is critical and maximally sensitive. As additional variables are added, the total number of configurations increases exponentially and quickly becomes prohibitively computationally expensive to calculate, especially using Monte Carlo methods.

This work presents the development of a particle swarm optimization algorithm to design …

Pressure Relief Wells: Analysis Of Subsurface Heterogeneity To Evaluate Relief Well Locations For Mississippi River Levees, Emma Marie Young Jan 2022

Pressure Relief Wells: Analysis Of Subsurface Heterogeneity To Evaluate Relief Well Locations For Mississippi River Levees, Emma Marie Young

Masters Theses

“When designing pressure relief well systems, it is imperative to understand what major geomorphology and heterogenies features are present, such as buried oxbow lakes, especially when the feature is parallel to the source, such as the Mississippi River. When present, there is a notable greater increase in head pressures, especially on the landward tow of the levee. This can cause erosional features that originally thought of to have been protected from by installing pressure relief wells. When comparing the effective hydraulic conductivities of horizontal clay layers and vertical clay layers spanning the length of the model, little to no noticeable …

Neutrosophic topological space is an extension of fuzzy topology. Neutrosophic topological space addresses each element’s membership, indeterminacy and non-membership grades. Dropping an axiom in the neutrosophic topological space produces a new topological space called neutrosophic supra topological space. Elements in this neutrosophic supra topology are neutrosophic sets. We established the neutrosophic αψ-supra open set in neutrosophic supra topological spaces in this paper. Also, we investigate the properties of the newly defined set. Neutrosophic αψ -supra continuity is introduced and studied subsequently.

The Effects Of Ocean Acidification And Temperature Rise On The Thermal Tolerance And Critical Thermal Limit Of Pacific Herring (Clupea Pallasii), Nicole R. Singh Jan 2022

The Effects Of Ocean Acidification And Temperature Rise On The Thermal Tolerance And Critical Thermal Limit Of Pacific Herring (Clupea Pallasii), Nicole R. Singh

WWU Graduate School Collection

Anthropogenic climate change, including the interactive effects of ocean acidification and temperature rise, is projected to affect marine ecosystems by challenging the environmental tolerance limits of individual species. Such impacts have been documented in a handful of marine fishes, including major physiological effects experienced in early-life stages of Pacific herring, an important forage and commercial fish species widely distributed in coastal systems across the North Pacific. In this study, we investigated the effects of temperatures between 10- 16°C and two pCO2 levels (ambient and high pCO2) on hatching and survival of Pacific herring. Survival after acute temperature exposure was assessed …

Chemistry Faculty Research and Scholarship

Novel phenanthridinone analogues with an all-carbon quaternary stereocenter have been enantioselectively synthesized using the Birch–Heck sequence. Flat phenanthridinone structures have extensive bioactivity but consequently also suffer from poor therapeutic selectivity. The addition of a quaternary center to the phenanthridinone skeleton has the potential to generate more complex analogues with improved selectivity. Unfortunately, no general synthetic pathway to such derivatives exists. Herein we report a four-step process that transforms inexpensive benzoic acid into 22 different quaternary carbon-containing phenanthridinone analogues with a variety of substituents on all three rings: alkyl groups at the quaternary center; methyl, methoxymethyl, or para-methoxybenzyl on the …

We report the synthesis of sulfone iminium fluorides (SIFs), a reactive class of sulfur(VI) molecules. The synthesis is tolerant of a variety of substituents on the sulfur and nitrogen components. The SIF reagents were applied to the deoxyfluorination of alcohols and carboxylic acids, providing high yields of fluorinated products in 60 s at room temperature. The SIF reagents were then utilized in sulfur fluoride exchange (SuFEx), creating the first ionic SuFEx products to date.

The complex [TEA][Tp*MoIV(O)(S2BMOPP)] (1) [TEA = tetraethylammonium, Tp* = tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)hydroborate, and BMOPP = 6-(3-butynyl-2-methyl-2-ol)-2-pivaloyl pterin] is a structural analogue of the molybdenum cofactor common to all pyranopterin molybdenum enzymes because it possesses a pyranopterin-ene-1,2-dithiolate ligand (S2BMOPP) that exists primarily in the ring-closed pyrano structure as a resonance hybrid of ene-dithiolate and thione-thiolate forms. Compound 1, the protonated [Tp*MoIV(O)(S2BMOPP-H)] (1-H) and one-electron-oxidized [Tp*MoV(O)(S2BMOPP)] [1-Mo(5+)] species have been studied using a combination of electrochemistry, electronic absorption, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Additional insight into the nature of these molecules has been derived from electronic structure computations. Differences in dithiolene C–S bond …

Just-In-Time Defect Identification And Localization: A Two-Phase Framework, Meng Yan, Xin Xia, Yuanrui Fan, Ahmed E. Hassan, David Lo, Shanping Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Defect localization aims to locate buggy program elements (e.g., buggy files, methods or lines of code) based on defect symptoms, e.g., bug reports or program spectrum. However, when we receive the defect symptoms, the defect has been exposed and negative impacts have been introduced. Thus, one challenging task is: whether we can locate buggy program prior to appearance of the defect symptom at an early time (e.g., when buggy program elements are being checked-in). We refer to this type of defect localization as “Just-In-Time (JIT) Defect localization”. Although many prior studies have proposed various JIT defect identification methods to identify …

Techniques For Accelerating Large-Scale Automata Processing, Hongyuan Liu

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The big-data era has brought new challenges to computer architectures due to the large-scale computation and data. Moreover, this problem becomes critical in several domains where the computation is also irregular, among which we focus on automata processing in this dissertation. Automata are widely used in applications from different domains such as network intrusion detection, machine learning, and parsing. Large-scale automata processing is challenging for traditional von Neumann architectures. To this end, many accelerator prototypes have been proposed. Micron's Automata Processor (AP) is an example. However, as a spatial architecture, it is unable to handle large automata programs without repeated …

Data-Driven Approaches For Water Quality Modeling In Coastal Systems, Xin Yu

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Water quality in coastal waters is of great socio-economic concern. Anthropogenic activities along the coast have led to an increasing number of impaired waterbodies and degraded ecosystems. To manage water quality issues, accurately modeling the coastal water quality is vitally important. One traditional way to model water quality is using numerical models. Despite great advances in hydrodynamic modeling over the past few decades, water quality simulation is still challenging as the performance of water quality model depends on how well the complex biogeochemical processes are parameterized. While numerical models are the dominant tool for water quality modeling, there are increasing …

Practical Gpgpu Application Resilience Estimation And Fortification, Lishan Yang

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are becoming a de facto solution for accelerating a wide range of applications but remain susceptible to transient hardware faults (soft errors) that can easily compromise application output. One of the major challenges in the domain of GPU reliability is to accurately measure general purpose GPU (GPGPU) application resilience to transient faults. This challenge stems from the fact that a typical GPGPU application spawns a huge number of threads and then utilizes a large amount of potentially unreliable compute and memory resources available on the GPUs. As the number of possible fault locations can be in …
