Consider the H^{1/2}-critical Schroedinger equation with a cubic nonlinearity in R^3, i \partial_t \psi + \Delta \psi + |\psi|^2 \psi = 0. It admits an eight-dimensional manifold of periodic solutions called solitons e^{i(\Gamma + vx - t|v|^2 + \alpha^2 t)} \phi(x-2tv-D, \alpha), where \phi(x, \alpha) is a positive ground state solution of the semilinear elliptic equation -\Delta \phi + \alpha^2\phi = \phi^3. We prove that in the neighborhood of the soliton manifold there exists a H^{1/2} real analytic manifold N of asymptotically stable solutions of the Schroedinger equation, meaning they are the sum of a moving soliton and a dispersive …

We extend a method for approximate balanced reduced order model derivation for finite dimensional linear systems developed by Rowley (Int. J. Bifur. Chaos Appl. Sci. Eng. 15(3) (2005), pp. 997-1013) to infinite dimensional systems. The algorithm is related to standard balanced truncation, but includes aspects of the proper orthogonal decomposition in its computational approach. The method can be also applied to nonlinear systems. Numerical results are presented for a convection diffusion system.

For the reconstruction of a nonuniformly sampled signal based on its noisy observations, we propose a level dependent l1 penalized wavelet reconstruction method. The LARS/Lasso algorithm is applied to solve the Lasso problem. The data adaptive choice of the regularization parameters is based on the AIC and the degrees of freedom is estimated by the number of nonzero elements in the Lasso solution. Simulation results conducted on some commonly used 1_D test signals illustrate that the proposed method possesses good empirical properties.

A Comparison Of Turbulent Thermal Convection Between Conditions Of Constant Temperature And Constant Flux, Hans Johnston, Charles R. Doering

We report the results of high-resolution direct numerical simulations of two-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection for Rayleigh numbers up to Ra=1010 in order to study the influence of temperature boundary conditions on turbulent heat transport. Specifically, we considered the extreme cases of fixed heat flux (where the top and bottom boundaries are poor thermal conductors) and fixed temperature (perfectly conducting boundaries). Both cases display identical heat transport at high Rayleigh numbers fitting a power law Nu≈0.138×Ra0.285 with a scaling exponent indistinguishable from 2/7=0.2857… above Ra=107. The overall flow dynamics for both scenarios, in particular, the time averaged temperature profiles, are also indistinguishable …

This paper proves a Berry-Esseen theorem for sample quantiles of strongly-mixing random variables under a polynomial mixing rate. The rate of normal approximation is shown to be O(n-1/2) as n -> infinity, where n denotes the sample size. This result is in sharp contrast to the case of the sample mean of strongly-mixing random variables where the rate O(n-1/2) is not known even under an exponential strong mixing rate. Synchronization of excitable cells coupled by reciprocal inhibition is a topic of significant interest due to the important role that inhibitory synaptic interaction plays in the generation and regulation of coherent rhythmic activity in a variety of neural systems. While recent work revealed the synchronizing influence of inhibitory coupling on the dynamics of many networks, it is known that strong coupling can destabilize phase-locked firing. Let P be a Poisson process of intensity 1 in a square Sn of area n. We construct a random geometric graph Gn,k by joining each point of P to its k nearest neighbours. For many applications it is desirable that Gn,k is highly connected, that is, it remains connected even after the removal of a small number of its vertices. We consider a nonlinear elliptic equation driven by the p-Laplacian with a nonsmooth potential (hemivariational inequality) and Dirichlet boundary condition. Using a variational approach based on nonsmooth critical point theory together with the method of upper and lower solutions, we prove the existence of at least three nontrivial smooth solutions: one positive, the second negative, and the third sign changing (nodal solution). Our hypotheses onthe nonsmooth potential incorporate in our framework of analysis the so-called asymptotically p-linear problems.

Two strategies are proposed for sorting out priorities and goals in education. At the college level the column argues that goals, and therefore requirements, should be set based on the desired knowledge base of the entire population rather than the individual. At the scale of a single K-12 classroom the column argues that priority be given to content requiring most instructor intervention, describing how the structure of class time and school activities would change as a result. A topic search of the Web of Science (WoS) database using the term “numeracy” produced a bibliography of 293 articles, reviews and editorial commentaries (Oct 2008). The citation graph of the bibliography clearly identifies five benchmark papers (1995-2001), four of which developed numeracy assessment instruments. Starting with the 80 papers that cite these benchmarks, we identified a set of 25 papers (1995-2008) in which the medical research community reports the development and/or application of health-numeracy assessments. In all we found 10 assessment instruments from which we have compiled a total of 48 assessment items. There are both general and context-specific …

We present the case for introductory geoscience courses as model venues for increasing the quantitative literacy (QL) of large numbers of the college-educated population. The geosciences provide meaningful context for a number of fundamental mathematical concepts that are revisited several times in a single course. Using some best practices from the mathematics education community surrounding problem solving, calculus reform, pre-college mathematics and five geoscience/math workshops, geoscience and mathematics faculty have identified five pedagogical ideas to increase the QL of the students who populate introductory geoscience courses. In November 2005, the faculty of Macalester College voted to institute a graduation requirement in Quantitative Thinking (QT) that is truly interdisciplinary. It currently draws on courses from thirteen departments including Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Political Science, Theater, Mathematics, Environmental Science, and Geology. The purpose of this paper is to provide an introduction to the concepts of wavelets and multiwavelets, and explain how these tools can be used by the analyst community to find patterns in quantitative data. Three multiwavelet bases are introduced, the GHM basis from \cite{GHM}, a piecewise polynomial basis with approximation order 4 from \cite{DGH}, and a smoother approximation-order-4 basis developed by the author in previous work \cite{K}. The technique of using multiwavelets to find patterns is illustrated in a traffic-analysis example. We propose an exact filtered backprojection algorithm for inversion of the cone beam data in the case when the trajectory is composed of a distorted circle and a line segment. The length of the scan is determined by the region of interest , and it is independent of the size of the object. With few geometric restrictions on the curve, we show that we have an exact reconstruction. Numerical experiments demonstrate good image quality.

Regular graphs are graphs in which all vertices have the same degree. Many properties of these graphs are known. Such graphs play an important role in modeling network configurations where equipment limitations impose a restriction on the maximum number of links emanating from a node. These limitations do not enforce strict regularity, and it becomes interesting to investigate nonregular graphs that are in some sense close to regular.
