Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Mobile and embedded devices are becoming ubiquitous. Applications such as rescue with autonomous robots and event analysis on traffic cameras rely on devices with limited power supply and computational sources. Thus, the demand for efficient computer vision algorithms increases. Since 2015, we have organized the IEEE Low-Power Computer Vision Challenge to advance the state of the art in low-power computer vision. We describe the competition organizing details including the challenge design, the reference solution, the dataset, the referee system, and the evolution of the solutions from two winning teams. We examine the winning teams’ development patterns and design decisions, focusing …
Understanding And Advancing College Students' Mathematical Reasoning Using Collaborative Argumentation, Rachel Kay Heili
Understanding And Advancing College Students' Mathematical Reasoning Using Collaborative Argumentation, Rachel Kay Heili
MSU Graduate Theses
This study explored students’ mathematical reasoning skills and offered supports to advance them through a collaborative argumentation framework in a college intermediate algebra class. The goals of this study were to make observations about student reasoning, identify specific actions to address those observations, and document student growth in reasoning as a result of those actions. An iterative analysis, mixed method study was conducted in which the researcher engaged students in responding to questions that required conceptual understandings using a collaborative argumentation framework as a tool to identify and code components of their responses—claim, evidence, and reasoning. After coding and analyzing …
Geometric Dissections, Daniel Robert Martin
Geometric Dissections, Daniel Robert Martin
MSU Graduate Theses
In the study of geometry, the notion of dissection and its mechanics are occasionally over-looked. We consider and trace the history and theorems surrounding geometric dissections in both recreational and academic mathematics. We explore the important advancements in this particular topic from antiquity through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. We conclude with an exploration of the Banach-Tarski paradox
Spatial And Temporal Varitations In Dissolved Calcium In The Kentucky Lake Watershed In Relation To Zebra Mussel Colonization, Kelsie Meystedt
Spatial And Temporal Varitations In Dissolved Calcium In The Kentucky Lake Watershed In Relation To Zebra Mussel Colonization, Kelsie Meystedt
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Calcium is the fifth most abundant element on earth’s crust. Plants and animals require calcium for structure and intracellular metabolism. Recent studies have shown that dissolved calcium (Ca2+) freshwater ecosystems is of growing concern as the increasing concentrations of this element are implicated in altering the natural environment and biota. Elevated levels of dissolved calcium and sporadic re-emergence of an invasive species, namely zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) in Kentucky Lake in the recent years served as a motivation for this study. The objective of this study was to determine spatial and temporal variations in dissolved calcium in selected streams, Kentucky …
The Design Of Primary Holding Magnet For The Lanl Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Experiment, Piya Amara Palamure
The Design Of Primary Holding Magnet For The Lanl Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Experiment, Piya Amara Palamure
Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy
The measurement of the permanent electric dipole moment of the neutron (nEDM) plays a significant role in searching for sources of beyond standard model CP violating physics. The goal of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) nEDM experiment is to push the upper limit of the nEDM to < 3 × 10−27 e·cm (68 % CL). A highly uniform magnetic field is key to achieving this sensitivity for the nEDM measurement by reducing the systematic uncertainties associated with the magnetic field non-uniformity. The B0 coil was designed to achieve a field uniformity of < 0.3 nT·m−1 at a nominal holding field of 1 µT. This document will outline a novel technique employed in the construction of the B0 coil using printed circuit boards (PCBs) and will present preliminary field maps obtained with the B0 coil housed in a magnetically shielded room (MSR) at LANL.
As Ultra Cold Neutrons (UCNs) move from the source to the measurement cells, the UCNs experience a large magnetic field gradient in the region between the layers of the MSR. This large gradient would otherwise cause depolarization of the UCNs. To mitigate this, a double cos θ coil will serve as the …

ℼ± -,ℼ0-Meson Electroweak Decays Within Relativistic Quark Model Based On Point Form Of Poincaré-Invariant Quantum Mechanics, Vadzim Haurysh, Viktor Andreev
Turkish Journal of Physics
In the course of work the integral representation of ℼ0-meson form-factor of ℼ0 → γγ process has been obtained within relativistic quark model based on point form of Poincaré-invariant quantum mechanics taking into account anomalous magnetic moments of κυ and κⅾ quarks. The parameters obtained using pseudoscalar density constant gℼ± , current masses of υ- and ⅾ-quarks as well as decay constant ℼ± → ℓ±νℓ were used for numerical modeling of Fℼ0γ(t) form-factor in time-like region. Similar calculations for ℼ0 → γγ decay characteristics with reference to quark …
Higher Spanier Groups, Johnny Aceti
Higher Spanier Groups, Johnny Aceti
West Chester University Master’s Theses
When non-trivial local structures are present in a topological space X, a common ap- proach to characterizing the isomorphism type of the n-th homotopy group πn(X, x0) is to consider the image of πn(X, x0) in the n-th ˇCech homotopy group ˇπn(X, x0) under the canonical homomorphism Ψn : πn(X, x0) → ˇπn(X, x0). The subgroup ker Ψn is the obstruc- tion to this tactic as it consists of precisely those elements of πn(X, x0), which cannont be detected by polyhedral approximations to X. In this paper we present a definition of higher dimensional analouges of Thick Spanier groups use …
Additive P-Value Combination Test, Xing Ling
Additive P-Value Combination Test, Xing Ling
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
This dissertation includes four Chapters. A brief description of each chapter is organized as follows.
In Chapter 1, some developments on multiple hypotheses tests are introduced. Some preliminaries about the definition and the assumption are included.
In Chapter 2, a Stable Combination Test is proposed to combine $p$-values from multiple hypotheses tests. We show the proposed method controls the family-wise error rate at the target level and maintains asymptotically optimal power even when the elementary p-values from the individual hypotheses are dependent.
In Chapter 3, a deeper dig into the additive p-value combination test is performed. A common idea behind …
Structural Analysis And Slip Kinematics Of The Keweenaw Fault System Between Bête Grise Bay And Gratiot Lake, Keweenaw County, Michigan, Daniel J. Lizzadro-Mcpherson
Structural Analysis And Slip Kinematics Of The Keweenaw Fault System Between Bête Grise Bay And Gratiot Lake, Keweenaw County, Michigan, Daniel J. Lizzadro-Mcpherson
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The Keweenaw fault is perhaps the most significant geologic structure on the Keweenaw Peninsula, with an estimated 7-11 km of reverse slip juxtaposing volcanic strata of the ~1.1 Ga Portage Lake Volcanics above ~1.0 Ga Jacobsville Sandstone. The fault has been interpreted as a rift-bounding normal fault later inverted by compressional pulses of the Grenville Orogeny or, more recently, as part of a detached thrust fault system unrelated to an earlier normal fault. The fault is shown on published maps as a single continuous fault trace whose sinuosity implies multiple fault segments and complex slip dynamics. Mapping along Bête Grise …
Multiscale Molecular Modeling Studies Of The Dynamics And Catalytic Mechanisms Of Iron(Ii)- And Zinc(Ii)-Dependent Metalloenzymes, Sodiq O. Waheed
Multiscale Molecular Modeling Studies Of The Dynamics And Catalytic Mechanisms Of Iron(Ii)- And Zinc(Ii)-Dependent Metalloenzymes, Sodiq O. Waheed
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Enzymes are biological systems that aid in specific biochemical reactions. They lower the reaction barrier, thus speeding up the reaction rate. A detailed knowledge of enzymes will not be achievable without computational modeling as it offers insight into atomistic details and catalytic species, which are crucial to designing enzyme-specific inhibitors and impossible to gain experimentally. This dissertation employs advanced multiscale computational approaches to study the dynamics and reaction mechanisms of non-heme Fe(II) and 2-oxoglutarate (2OG) dependent oxygenases, including AlkB, AlkBH2, TET2, and KDM4E, involved in DNA and histone demethylation. It also focuses on Zn(II) dependent matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1), which helps …
Integrating Lidar, Aeromagnetic, And Geological Field Data To Identify Structural-Lithologic Elements Within The Archean Carney Lake Gneiss Complex, Ian M. Gannon
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The Archean Carney Lake Gneiss Complex (CLGC) is a suite of rocks on the southern margin of the Superior Province and within the Minnesota River Valley subprovince. It is one of many gneissic domes in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota whose complex geology is poorly understood due to a previous lack of economic interest in gneissic terranes and significant challenges to their investigation. As a consequence, the CLGC and other gneissic domes in the region are represented on geologic maps as undifferentiated masses surrounded by better defined and understood Paleoproterozoic supracrustal rocks and igneous intrusions. Within the last ten years, however, …
Fabrication And Optical Properties Of Two-Dimensional Transition Metal Dichalcogenides, Manpreet Boora
Fabrication And Optical Properties Of Two-Dimensional Transition Metal Dichalcogenides, Manpreet Boora
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Two-dimensional layered materials such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides have gained a lot of attention because of their distinctive chemical, optical, and electronic properties. Transition metal dichalcogenides can have a tunable bandgap in the range of 1 − 3 eV (visible), which enables their applications in ultrathin field effect transistors, photovoltaics, sensors, and optoelectronic devices. They exhibit an indirect-to-direct band gap transition when thinned down from bulk to a single layer. They show strong photoluminescence, electron–photon interaction, valley pseudospin, nonlinear optical response, and lack of dangling bonds. Many exotic phenomena appear when materials are thinned to nanoscale size because …
The Impact Of Pre-Experiment Walking On Distance Perception In Vr, Soheil Sepahyar
The Impact Of Pre-Experiment Walking On Distance Perception In Vr, Soheil Sepahyar
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
While individuals can accurately estimate distances in the real world, this ability is often diminished in virtual reality (VR) simulations, hampering performance across training, entertainment, prototyping, and education domains. To assess distance judgments, the direct blind walking method—having participants walk blindfolded to targets—is frequently used. Typically, direct blind walking measurements are performed after an initial practice phase, where people become comfortable with walking while blindfolded. Surprisingly, little research has explored how such pre-experiment walking impacts subsequent VR distance judgments. Our initial investigation revealed increased pre-experiment blind walking reduced distance underestimations, underscoring the importance of detailing these preparatory procedures in research—details …
Deep Learning For Medical Image Segmentation Using Prior Knowledge And Topology, Chen Zhao
Deep Learning For Medical Image Segmentation Using Prior Knowledge And Topology, Chen Zhao
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Image segmentation refers to the division of a digital image into distinct segments or groups of pixels/voxels. However, most of the existing deep learning approaches lack the utilization of prior knowledge, such as shape information, which could improve segmentation accuracy. In addition, conventional image segmentation frequently falls short in preserving intricate spatial details, motivating the innovation of strategies for multi-scaled feature integration. Furthermore, traditional image segmentation methods primarily concentrate on pixel-level or region-level analysis. However, given the inherent morphological similarities among various image objects, the significance of topology information surpasses that of pixel-level data in the realm of medical image …
Probing Exotic Neutral Current Interactions With Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering, Mehmet Demi̇rci̇
Probing Exotic Neutral Current Interactions With Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering, Mehmet Demi̇rci̇
Turkish Journal of Physics
The Exotic Neutral Current introduces new interactions beyond standard model (BSM) which consist of all possible four-fermion nonderivative Lorentz structures: scalar (S), pseudoscalar (P), vector (V), axial-vector (A), and tensor (T). In this work, we investigate the prediction of this model via the Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering (CE$\nu$NS). The differential cross-section spectrum of CE$\nu$NS for three nuclei in regards to experiment advancement are calculated in the framework of this model independent proposal using recent obtained bound. We present the ratio of this exotic model with the SM for various threshold energies. Significant bound is shown lie in the lower threshold …
I. Preparation Of Strategic Synthetic Building Blocks For World Health Organization Essential Medicines. Ii. Applying The Principles Of Process Intensification To The Synthesis Of Fluoroquinolone Antibiotics., Jeffrey M. Noble
Theses and Dissertations
The synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients is often a time-consuming and expensive process. Due to the nature of pharmaceutical manufacturing, these costs are carried forward to the final purchase price by the consumer. Although there are many factors which are involved in the final costing of a pharmaceutical, the cost associated with the synthesis is the primary one which can be managed by chemists and engineers.
This work discusses the synthetic routes of four active pharmaceutical ingredients as well as the synthetic techniques and equipment used with an emphasis on how the application of specific techniques can be applied to …
Variability In Causal Effects On A Binary Outcome And Noncompliance In A Multisite Randomized Trial, Xinxin Sun
Variability In Causal Effects On A Binary Outcome And Noncompliance In A Multisite Randomized Trial, Xinxin Sun
Theses and Dissertations
Noncompliance to treatment assignment is widespread in randomized trials and presents challenges in causal inference. In the presence of noncompliance, the most commonly estimated effect of treatment assignment, also known as intent-to-treat (ITT) effect, is biased. Of interest in this setting is the complier average causal effect (CACE), the ITT effect among compliers. Further complication arises when the outcome variable is partially observed.
My research focuses on estimating the distribution of a site-specific CACE in a multisite randomized controlled trial (MRCT) by maximum likelihood (ML). Assuming compliance missing at random (MAR). We express the likelihood as an integral with respect …
Development Of Tangible Code Blocks For The Blind And Visually Impaired, Hyun Woo Kim
Development Of Tangible Code Blocks For The Blind And Visually Impaired, Hyun Woo Kim
Theses and Dissertations
The fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) have been growing at an accelerating rate in recent times. Knowing how to program has become one key skill for entering all of these STEM fields. However, many students find programming difficult. The block based programming language, Scratch, was specifically designed to lower hurdles to learning how to program for sighted students. Unfortunately, although very effective and widely used in K12 classrooms, Scratch, similar to other block based languages, is inaccessible to students who are blind and visually impaired (BVI). This thesis is part of a larger project to make the …
A Search For Compact Object Dark Matter In The Universe Utilizing Gravitational Millilensing Of Gamma-Ray Bursts, Oindabi Mukherjee
A Search For Compact Object Dark Matter In The Universe Utilizing Gravitational Millilensing Of Gamma-Ray Bursts, Oindabi Mukherjee
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
In this dissertation, I explore the existence of Compact Object (CO) Dark Matter (DM), examining its predicted millilensing impact on the light curves of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). The hypothesis under investigation is that if CO DM exists, it will act as a gravitational lens, influencing light emanating from GRBs and creating a measurable gravitational echo. The detection of this echo is conditional on several factors, including the spatial alignment of the observer, lens, and source and the mass of the CO DM.
Recent studies have reported the potential detection of millilensing in several GRBs, including GRB 950830, GRB 081122A, GRB …

Investigating Collaborative Explainable Ai (Cxai)/Social Forum As An Explainable Ai (Xai) Method In Autonomous Driving (Ad), Tauseef Ibne Mamun
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Explainable AI (XAI) systems primarily focus on algorithms, integrating additional information into AI decisions and classifications to enhance user or developer comprehension of the system's behavior. These systems often incorporate untested concepts of explainability, lacking grounding in the cognitive and educational psychology literature (S. T. Mueller et al., 2021). Consequently, their effectiveness may be limited, as they may address problems that real users don't encounter or provide information that users do not seek.
In contrast, an alternative approach called Collaborative XAI (CXAI), as proposed by S. Mueller et al (2021), emphasizes generating explanations without relying solely on algorithms. CXAI centers …
Characterization And Evaluation Of Catalytic Activity Of Small Molecule Copper Complexes For Metallopolymer Design, Brenda Lu
Master's Theses
Catalysis is one of the driving forces in designing greener chemical processes for essential real-world applications. Enzymes, Nature’s catalysts, are known for their high selectivity, use of readily available metals and reagents, and ability to work under physiological conditions; three important qualities that synthetic chemists would like to mimic in their small molecule metal catalysts. Though most small molecule metal catalysts fall short of enzyme-like activity, we hypothesize that using a polymer scaffold as a secondary coordination sphere mimic around the metal complex will affect the microenvironment (steric and electronic) and enable enzyme-like activity. Previously, we synthesized ligand precursors and …

Recent Climate Change Influence On Flood Magnitude And Frequency, Channel Widening, And Bar Deposition In Big River, Missouri Ozarks, Patrick Saulys
Recent Climate Change Influence On Flood Magnitude And Frequency, Channel Widening, And Bar Deposition In Big River, Missouri Ozarks, Patrick Saulys
MSU Graduate Theses
Climate and land use can control the flood regime of a river and regulate channel form and size over periods of decades to centuries. Recent climate change has increased rainfall intensity and flood magnitude/frequency in many watersheds in the midwestern United States. Thus, river channels affected by more frequent and larger floods are expected to respond by increasing width (or depth) by fluvial erosion to accommodate larger peak discharges. This hypothesis was evaluated along 186 km of the Big River in southeast Missouri by analysis of historical aerial photography, precipitation studies, and United States Geological Survey (USGS) flow gage records. …
Sensor Relationship Inference In Single Resident Smart Homes Using Time Series, Samuel Nack
Sensor Relationship Inference In Single Resident Smart Homes Using Time Series, Samuel Nack
MSU Graduate Theses
Determining sensor relationships in smart environments is complex due to the variety and volume of time series information they provide. Moreover, identifying sensor relationships to connect them with actuators is difficult for smart home users who may not have technical experience. Yet, gathering information on sensor relationships is a crucial intermediate step towards more advanced smart home applications such as advanced policy generation or automatic sensor configuration. Therefore, in this thesis, I propose a novel unsupervised learning approach, named SeReIn, to automatically group sensors by their inherent relationships solely using time series data for single resident smart homes. SeReIn extracts …
Optimizing Soluble Recombinant Expression Of The Aedes Aegypti Early Trypsin Protease, Neomi Millan
Optimizing Soluble Recombinant Expression Of The Aedes Aegypti Early Trypsin Protease, Neomi Millan
Master's Theses
The female Aedes aegypti mosquito is a primary vector for the transmission of blood–borne viral pathogens such as Chikungunya, Zika, Yellow Fever, and Dengue. The female mosquito will become infected with these pathogens through the uptake of a blood meal from an infected host. The midgut digestive enzymes are required to digest the blood meal to obtain necessary nutrients needed for the completion of the gonotrophic cycle. Blood meal digestion is biphasic and digestive enzymes are expressed at different time points after uptake of a blood meal. The focus of this study is on an early phase protease known as …
