Conformal And Geometric Properties Of The Camassa-Holm Hierarchy, Rossen Ivanov Jan 2007

Conformal And Geometric Properties Of The Camassa-Holm Hierarchy, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

Integrable equations with second order Lax pair like KdV and Camassa-Holm (CH) exhibit interesting conformal properties and can be written in terms of the so-called conformal invariants (Schwarz form). These properties for the CH hierarchy are discussed in this ontribution. The squared eigenfunctions of the spectral problem, associated to the Camassa-Holm equation represent a complete basis of functions, which helps to describe the Inverse Scattering Transform (IST) for the Camassa-Holm hierarchy as a Generalised Fourier Transform (GFT). Using GFT we describe explicitly some members of the CH hierarchy, including integrable deformations for the CH equation. Also we show that solutions …

Asymptotic Properties Of Estimators For The Linear Panel Regression Model With Individual Effects And Serially Correlated Errors: The Case Of Stationary And Non-Stationary Regressors And Residuals, Badi H. Baltagi, Chihwa Kao, Long Liu Jan 2007

Asymptotic Properties Of Estimators For The Linear Panel Regression Model With Individual Effects And Serially Correlated Errors: The Case Of Stationary And Non-Stationary Regressors And Residuals, Badi H. Baltagi, Chihwa Kao, Long Liu

Center for Policy Research

This paper studies the asymptotic properties of standard panel data estimators in a simple panel regression model with error component disturbances. Both the regressor and the remainder disturbance term are assumed to be autoregressive and possibly non-stationary. Asymptotic distributions are derived for the standard panel data estimators including ordinary least squares, fixed effects, first-difference, and generalized least squares (GLS) estimators when both T and n are large. We show that all the estimators have asymptotic normal distributions and have different convergence rates dependent on the non-stationarity of the regressors and the remainder disturbances. We show using Monte Carlo experiments that …

Modelling And Testing For Structural Changes In Panel Cointegration Models With Common And Idiosyncratic Stochastic Trend, Chihwa Kao, Lorenzo Trapani, Giovanni Urga Jan 2007

Modelling And Testing For Structural Changes In Panel Cointegration Models With Common And Idiosyncratic Stochastic Trend, Chihwa Kao, Lorenzo Trapani, Giovanni Urga

Center for Policy Research

In this paper, we propose an estimation and testing framework for parameter instability in cointegrated panel regressions with common and idiosyncratic trends. We develop tests for structural change for the slope parameters under the null hypothesis of no structural break against the alternative hypothesis of (at least) one common change point, which is possibly unknown. The limiting distributions of the proposed test statistics are derived. Monte Carlo simulations examine size and power of the proposed tests. We are grateful for discussions with Robert De Jong, Long-Fei Lee, Zongwu Cai, and Yupin Hu. We would also like to thank participants in …

Forecasting With Panel Data, Badi H. Baltagi

Center for Policy Research

This paper gives a brief survey of forecasting with panel data. Starting with a simple error component regression model and surveying best linear unbiased prediction under various assumptions of the disturbance term. This includes various ARMA models as well as spatial autoregressive models. The paper also surveys how these forecasts have been used in panel data applications, running horse races between heterogeneous and homogeneous panel data models using out of sample forecasts.

Playing Games To Build Understanding, Michele Carnahan, Bridgette Stevens Jan 2007

Playing Games To Build Understanding, Michele Carnahan, Bridgette Stevens

Faculty Publications

I am fortunate. I teach from Investigations in Number, Data, and Space [TERC] (1996), a standards-based elementary mathematics curriculum. My evolution from teaching in a traditional teacher-centered approach to one that supports a student-centered community of learners has been a slow and gradual process during the past six years of teaching. Fortunately, through experience, professional development, and graduate level courses, I have come to appreciate the conceptual understanding students acquire from learning mathematics via a student-centered approach and how playing games is an effective instructional strategy for learning mathematics. As intended by the authors of Investigations and envisioned by the …

A Functional Calculus In A Non Commutative Setting, Fabrizio Colombo, Graziano Gentili, Irene Sabadini, Daniele C. Struppa

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper we announce the development of a functional calculus for operators defined on quaternionic Banach spaces. The definition is based on a new notion of slice regularity, see [6], and the key tools are a new resolvent operator and a new eigenvalue problem. This approach allows us to deal both with bounded and unbounded operators.

Stochastic Comparisons Of Parallel Systems When Component Have Proportional Hazard Rates, Subhash C. Kochar, Maochao Xu

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Let Χ1, … Χn be independent random variables with Χᵢ having survival function Fλᵢ, i=1, … , n, and let Y₁, … , Yn be a random sample with common population survival distribution Fλ, where λ = Σᵢ=₁nλᵢl n. Let Χn:n and Yn:n denote the lifetimes of the parallel systems consisting of these components, respectively. It is shown that Xn:n is greater than Yn:n in terms of likelihood ratio order. It is also proved that the sample range Χn:n - Χ₁:n is larger than Yn n:n - Y₁:n according to reverse hazard rate ordering. These two results …

The Topology Of Surface Mediatrices, James Bernhard, J. J. P. Veerman Jan 2007

The Topology Of Surface Mediatrices, James Bernhard, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Given a pair of distinct points p and q in a metric space with distance d, the mediatrix is the set of points x such that d(x,p)=d(x,q). In this paper, we examine the topological structure of mediatrices in connected, compact, closed 2-manifolds whose distance function is inherited from a Riemannian metric. We determine that such mediatrices are, up to homeomorphism, finite, closed simplicial 1-complexes with an even number of incipient edges emanating from each vertex. Using this and results from [J.J.P. Veerman, J. Bernhard, Minimally separating sets, mediatrices and Brillouin spaces, Topology Appl., in press], we give the classification …

Locally Conservative Fluxes For The Continuous Galerkin Method, Bernardo Cockburn, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Haiying Wang Jan 2007

Locally Conservative Fluxes For The Continuous Galerkin Method, Bernardo Cockburn, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Haiying Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The standard continuous Galerkin (CG) finite element method for second order elliptic problems suffers from its inability to provide conservative flux approximations, a much needed quantity in many applications. We show how to overcome this shortcoming by using a two step postprocessing. The first step is the computation of a numerical flux trace defined on element inter- faces and is motivated by the structure of the numerical traces of discontinuous Galerkin methods. This computation is non-local in that it requires the solution of a symmetric positive definite system, but the system is well conditioned independently of mesh size, so it …

Effective Use Of Process Capability Indices For Supplier Management, Elizabeth A. Cudney, David Drain Jan 2007

Effective Use Of Process Capability Indices For Supplier Management, Elizabeth A. Cudney, David Drain

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Process capability indices were originally invented to enable an organization to make economically sound decisions for process management. Process capability is a comparison of the voice of the process with the voice of the customer. Current practice is to use Cp and Cpk regardless of the validity of the underlying assumptions necessary for their use. Even if all necessary assumptions are satisfied, important problems can be missed if these indices are the sole process evaluation examined. Customer-supplier axioms are introduced to motivate more useful process evaluations and foster long-term harmonious relationships. This paper explores the alternative capability indices Cpm, Cpmk, …

Solving Ramanujan's Differential Equations For Eisenstein Series Via A First Order Riccati Equation, James M. Hill, Bruce C. Berndt, Timothy Huber Jan 2007

Solving Ramanujan's Differential Equations For Eisenstein Series Via A First Order Riccati Equation, James M. Hill, Bruce C. Berndt, Timothy Huber

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper we prove that Ramanujan's differential equations for the Eisenstein series P, Q, and R are invariant under a simple one-parameter stretching group of transformations. Using this, we show that the three differential equations may be reduced to a first order Riccati differential equation, the solution of which may be represented in terms of hypergeometric functions. The resulting formulas allow for the derivation of parametric representations of P, Q, and R, analogous to representations in Ramanujan's second notebook. In contrast, in the classical approach, one first needs to derive the fundamental formula connecting theta functions with elliptic integrals. …

Symbolization Of Generating Functions; An Application Of The Mullin–Rota Theory Of Binomial Enumeration, Tian-Xiao He, Peter J.S. S, Leetsch C. Hsu Dec 2006

Symbolization Of Generating Functions; An Application Of The Mullin–Rota Theory Of Binomial Enumeration, Tian-Xiao He, Peter J.S. S, Leetsch C. Hsu

Tian-Xiao He

We have found that there are more than a dozen classical generating functions that could be suitably symbolized to yield various symbolic sum formulas by employing the Mullin–Rota theory of binomial enumeration. Various special formulas and identities involving well-known number sequences or polynomial sequences are presented as illustrative examples. The convergence of the symbolic summations is discussed.

Fourier Transform Of Bernstein–Bézier Polynomials, Tian-Xiao He, Charles K. Chui, Qingtang Jiang

Tian-Xiao He

Explicit formulae, in terms of Bernstein–Bézier coefficients, of the Fourier transform of bivariate polynomials on a triangle and univariate polynomials on an interval are derived in this paper. Examples are given and discussed to illustrate the general theory. Finally, this consideration is related to the study of refinement masks of spline function vectors.

Two Number-Theoretic Problems That Illustrate The Power And Limitations Of Randomness, Andrew Shallue Dec 2006

Two Number-Theoretic Problems That Illustrate The Power And Limitations Of Randomness, Andrew Shallue

Andrew Shallue

This thesis contains work on two problems in algorithmic number theory. The first problem is to give an algorithm that constructs a rational point on an elliptic curve over a finite field. A fast and easy randomized algorithm has existed for some time. We prove that in the case where the finite field has characteristic 2, there is a deterministic algorithm with the same asymptotic running time as the existing randomized algorithm.

The Sheffer Group And The Riordan Group, Tian-Xiao He, Peter J.S. Shiue, Leetsch C. Hsu

Tian-Xiao He

We define the Sheffer group of all Sheffer-type polynomials and prove the isomorphism between the Sheffer group and the Riordan group. An equivalence of the Riordan array pair and generalized Stirling number pair is also presented. Finally, we discuss a higher dimensional extension of Riordan array pairs.

Doubling Measures, Monotonicity, And Quasiconformality, Leonid V. Kovalev, Diego Maldonado, Jang-Mei Wu

Mathematics - All Scholarship

We construct quasiconformal mappings in Euclidean spaces by integration of a discontinuous kernel against doubling measures with suitable decay. The differentials of mappings that arise in this way satisfy an isotropic form of the doubling condition. We prove that this isotropic doubling condition is satisfied by the distance functions of certain fractal sets. Finally, we construct an isotropic doubling measure that is not absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure.

Asymmetric Games For Convolution Systems With Applications To Feedback Control Of Constrained Parabolic Equations, Boris S. Mordukhovich Dec 2006

Asymmetric Games For Convolution Systems With Applications To Feedback Control Of Constrained Parabolic Equations, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

The paper is devoted to the study of some classes of feedback control problems for linear parabolic equations subject to hard/pointwise constraints on both Dirichlet boundary controls and state dynamic/output functions in the presence of uncertain perturbations within given regions. The underlying problem under consideration, originally motivated by automatic control of the groundwater regime in irrigation networks, is formalized as a minimax problemof optimal control, where the control strategy is sought as a feedback law. Problems of this type are among the most important in control theory and applications - while most challenging and difficult. Based on the Maximum Principle …

Analyzing The Effects Of Adolescent Risky Behaviors On Suicidal Ideation, Marchelle Elizabeth Sanchez

Mathematics Theses

This study is an analysis of adolescent risk behaviors contributing to an increased rate of suicidal ideation for 12 to 18 year olds. The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System Survey (YRBSS) is an epidemiologic survey designed to monitor the prevalence of risky behaviors of adolescents in middle and high school1. The YRBSS is a complex sample survey with a three-stage cluster design. Multiple logistic regression is used to analyze the data, including methods of analysis to address issues in complex survey design. Results of this study indicate several different risk factors that influence the rate of suicidal ideation among adolescents, …

Suboptimal Feedback Control Design Of Constrained Parabolic Systems In Uncertainty Conditions, Boris S. Mordukhovich Dec 2006

Suboptimal Feedback Control Design Of Constrained Parabolic Systems In Uncertainty Conditions, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

The paper concerns minimax control problems forlinear multidimensional parabolic systems with distributed uncertain perturbations and control functions acting in the Dirichlet boundary conditions. The underlying parabolic control system is functioning under hard/pointwise constraints on control and state variables. The main goal is to design a feedback control regulator that ensures the required state performance and robust stability under any feasible perturbations and minimize an energy-type functional under the worst perturbations from the given area. We develop an efficient approach to the minimax control design of constrained parabolic systems that is based on certain characteristic features of the parabolic dynamics including …

Stability Of Discrete Solitons In The Presence Of Parametric Driving, H. Susanto, Q. E. Hoq, Panos Kevrekidis

Panos Kevrekidis

In this Brief Report, we consider parametrically driven bright solitons in the vicinity of the anticontinuum limit. We illustrate the mechanism through which these solitons become unstable due to the collision of the phase mode with the continuous spectrum, or eigenvalues bifurcating thereof. We show how this mechanism typically leads to complete destruction of the bright solitary wave.
