Computer Simulation Of The Light Absorption Band Of The Jumping Spider Isorhodopsin, Noah Zoldak Dec 2022

Computer Simulation Of The Light Absorption Band Of The Jumping Spider Isorhodopsin, Noah Zoldak

Honors Projects

In order to simulate the photoisomerization of the 9-cis Jumping Spider Isorhodopsin (JSiR-1) it is necessary to first simulate its light-absorption band. Here we report on the absorption band simulated using protein models constructed using the advanced Automatic Rhodopsin Modeling (a-ARM) program. A population of S0 models was created and the corresponding S0 to S1 transitions were determined for each member of the resulting population. The calculation resulted in a Gaussian plot showing that the wavelength of the absorption maximum of 560 nm (a violet color) that is consistent, but red-shifted, with respect the experimentally observed value.

Standardization Of A Latent Blood Visualizer Based Upon Dna Degradation, Kailey M. Van 'T Hoff Dec 2022

Standardization Of A Latent Blood Visualizer Based Upon Dna Degradation, Kailey M. Van 'T Hoff

Honors Projects

Latent blood visualizers have been used in forensic science since 1937 beginning with Luminol. These visualizers through different types of reactions react with trace amounts of blood that cannot be seen with the naked human eye. These different reactions produce color that can then be seen by examiners. The four types of latent blood visualizers that were compared is luminol, leuco crystal violet, fluorescein, and bluestar. Luminol and bluestar use chemiluminescence, fluorescein uses florescent, and leuco crystal violet uses oxidation to react with iron in hemoglobin. At crime scenes when blood is detected which includes with the blood visualizers the …

Facies Architecture And Provenance Of The Highly Progradational, Fluvial Dominated Deltaic Depositional System Of The Cretaceous Nanushuk Formation On The North Slope Of Alaska, Sarah N. Naone

Theses and Dissertations

The Cretaceous Nanushuk Formation of northern Alaska records extremely rapid shoreline progradation across the Colville Basin during the Albian-Cenomanian epochs. Additionally, it records a period of tectonic realignment in the region, as the main sediment source began to transition from the Chukotkan orogeny to the west to a more local sediment source of the proximal Brooks Range to the south. Through detailed outcrop characterization and 3-D modeling of three exposed outcrops along the axial trend of the Colville Basin on the North Slope and the Upper section of the Nanushuk, this study clarifies the relative timing of the early Brookian …

Actively Guided Cansats For Assisting Localization And Mapping In Unstructured And Unknown Environments, Cary Chun, M. Hassan Tanveer Dec 2022

Actively Guided Cansats For Assisting Localization And Mapping In Unstructured And Unknown Environments, Cary Chun, M. Hassan Tanveer

Symposium of Student Scholars

When navigating in unknown and unstructured environments, Unmanned Arial Vehicles (UAVs) can struggle when attempting to preform Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) operations. Particularly challenging circumstance arise when an UAV may need to land or otherwise navigate through treacherous environments. As the primary UAV may be too large and unwieldly to safely investigate in these types of situations, this research effort proposes the use of actively guided CanSats for assisting in localization and mapping of unstructured environments. A complex UAV could carry multiple of these SLAM capable CanSats, and when additional mapping and localization capabilities where required, the CanSat would …

Hydrogen Bonding In Small Model Peptides; The Dft And Mp2 Study, Gracie Smith, Martina Kaledin Dec 2022

Hydrogen Bonding In Small Model Peptides; The Dft And Mp2 Study, Gracie Smith, Martina Kaledin

Symposium of Student Scholars

Formamide is a small model compound for the study of the peptide bond. The peptide bond links amino acids together, specifies rigidity to the protein backbone, and includes the essential docking sites for hydrogen-bond-mediated protein folding and protein aggregation, namely, the C=O acceptor and the N-H donor parts. Therefore, the infrared C=O (amide-I) and N-H (amide-A) vibrations provide sensitive and widely used probes into the structure of peptides. This computational chemistry work, we study hydrogen bonds in formamide dimer isomers. We evaluate the accuracy of the density functional theory (DFT) and many-body perturbation theory to the 2nd order (MP2) …

Symposium of Student Scholars

The Software Supply chain or SSC is the backbone of the logistics industry and is crucial to a business's success and operation. The surge of attacks and risks for the SSC has grown in coming years with each attack's impact becoming more significant. These attacks have led to the leaking of both client and company sensitive information, corruption of the data, and having it subject to malware and ransomware installation, despite new practices implemented and investments into SSC security and its branches that have not stopped attackers from developing new vulnerabilities and exploits. In our research, we have investigated Software …

Investigating The Electrochemical Behavior Of Dihydropyrrolopyroles For Use As Anodically Coloring Electrochromes, Perry Skiouris, Ally Kisiel, Valentino Sorto, Julia Mauro, Graham Collier

Symposium of Student Scholars

Electrochromic materials have found widespread use in consumer electronics, energy saving windows, and military applications. They contain unique electronic properties allowing them to undergo a color change in a redox reaction. One classification of these molecules is known as anodically coloring electrochromes (ACEs). When in solution, these compounds are transmissive in the neutral (ground) state and absorb visible light upon oxidation, by the formation of a radical cation, thus making them colored. The focus of this study is the electronic transitions of this radical cation and how chemical modifications to the structures produce a variable color profile. To design prospective …

Secure Cloud-Based Iot Water Quality Gathering For Analysis And Visualization, Soin Abdoul Kassif Baba M Traore

Symposium of Student Scholars

Water quality refers to measurable water characteristics, including chemical, biological, physical, and radiological characteristics usually relative to human needs. Dumping waste and untreated sewage are the reasons for water pollution and several diseases to the living hood. The quality of water can also have a significant impact on animals and plant ecosystems. Therefore, keeping track of water quality is a substantial national interest. Much research has been done for measuring water quality using sensors to prevent water pollution. In summary, those systems are built based on online and reagent-free water monitoring SCADA systems in wired networks. However, centralized servers, transmission …

Designing And Synthesizing A Warhead-Fragment Inhibitory Ligand For Ivyp1 Through Fragment-Based Drug Discovery, Samuel Moore

Symposium of Student Scholars

Fragment-based drug discovery (FBDD) is a powerful tool for developing anticancer and antimicrobial agents. Within this, magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) provides a comprehensive qualitative and quantitative approach to screening and validating weak and robust binders with targeted proteins, making NMR among the most attractive strategies in FBDD. Inhibitor of vertebrate lysozyme (Ivyp1) of P. aeruginosa serves as an excellent target because of its active cellular location and implications in clinical prognosis for cystic fibrosis and immunocompromised patients. This study uses current NMR and biophysical techniques to develop a covalent, fragment-linked warhead inhibitor for Ivyp1 through synthetic methods, warhead linking, and …

What Pakistani Computer Science And Software Engineering Students Think About Software Testing?, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Abdul Rehman Gilal

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Software testing is one of the crucial supporting processes of the software life cycle. Unfortunately for the software industry, the role is stigmatized, partly due to misperception and partly due to treatment of the role. The present study aims to analyze the situation to explore what restricts computer science and software engineering students from taking up a testing career in the software industry. To conduct this study, we surveyed 88 Pakistani students taking computer science or software engineering degrees. The results showed that the present study supports previous work into the unpopularity of testing compared to other software life cycle …

Efforts Towards The Asymmetric De Novo Synthesis Of Lanostanes And Euphanes, Htoo Tint Wai Dec 2022

Efforts Towards The Asymmetric De Novo Synthesis Of Lanostanes And Euphanes, Htoo Tint Wai

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Tetracyclic triterpenoids are ubiquitous in nature and biology, with members displaying a wide range of medically relevant properties and occupying rather distinct regions of chemical space. Members of this large class include well-known steroid hormones and sterols as well as structurally interesting subclasses such as lanostanes and euphanes, among others. Comprised of the tetracyclic skeleton with three stereodefined quaternary centers at ring-junction positions, lanostanes and euphanes present synthetic challenges that are different from those encountered in efforts targeting the structurally less complex steroid hormones. Lanostanes, in particular, stand as a historically important class of compounds as significant attention has been …

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration

In our days, slags are considered secondary resources due to the metals they contain. Copper slags having economical operating grades in terms of Zn, Cu, Ce, Ni, Co, Mo, and V, have complex mineralogy due to their thermal processing based formations. Methods of recovery for copper and other precious metals from slags, have been studied, and for which, flotation plants in industrial scale are operated. In cases where physical or physico-chemical mineral processing methods are not sufficient, hydrometallurgical methods are applied. In this study, the flotation method was applied to a copper slag with 0.9% Cu grade. Copper recovery and …

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Since the discovery of electron-wave duality, electron scattering instrumentation has developed into a powerful array of techniques for revealing the atomic structure of matter. Beyond detecting local lattice variations in equilibrium structures with the highest possible spatial resolution, recent research efforts have been directed toward the long-sought-after dream of visualizing the dynamic evolution of matter in real time. The atomic behavior at ultrafast timescales carries critical information on phase transition and chemical reaction dynamics, the coupling of electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom in materials and molecules, and the correlation among structure, function, and previously hidden metastable or nonequilibrium states …

Assessing The Impact Of Storage Time And Shape Of The Block On The Slicability Of Commercial Cheddar Cheese, Nathan Pace Dec 2022

Assessing The Impact Of Storage Time And Shape Of The Block On The Slicability Of Commercial Cheddar Cheese, Nathan Pace

Fall Student Research Symposium 2022

Cheddar cheese is one of the world's most popular cheeses and is consumed in blocks and slices. The slicability of cheddar cheese can depend on textural and rheological properties. Understanding these characteristics can enhance desirability and reduce material loss occurring during slicing. In this study, we focused on four main parameters: slice thickness, cheese shape, storage period, and cheese type. Four thicknesses (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mm) and two shapes (triangular and square) of mild, medium, sharp, and extra sharp were selected. Cheeses were purchased from Walmart and the Utah State University creamery. At first, cheese blocks were cut …
