The Alfsen-Errors Structure Topology In The Theory Of Complex L1-Preduals., T. S.S.R.K. Rao Dr. Feb 1982

The Alfsen-Errors Structure Topology In The Theory Of Complex L1-Preduals., T. S.S.R.K. Rao Dr.

Doctoral Theses

A complex Banach space X is said to be an L1-predual if X* is isometric to L1() for some non-negative measure Well known examples of L1-preduals include the space C(X) of complex-valued continuous functions on a compact Hausdorff space and the abstract M-spaces of Kakutani. In [19], Grothendieck introduced a class of L'-preduals, now known as G-spaces, and conjectured that those are all the L'-preduals. In his 1964 memoir [35], Lândenstrauss settled this conjecture by exhibiting a wide class of Banach spaces, other than G-spaces, which are L1-preduals. He also gave several characterizations and interest- ing properties of L1-preduals in …

Structure And Inter-Relations Of The Land, Labour, Credit And Product Markets Of South Kanara: A Study Of A Backward Agricultural Economy., K. Nagaraj Dr. Feb 1982

Structure And Inter-Relations Of The Land, Labour, Credit And Product Markets Of South Kanara: A Study Of A Backward Agricultural Economy., K. Nagaraj Dr.

Doctoral Theses

South Kanara is a predominantly rural and agricultural district in the state of Karnataka in South India, given largely to the cultivation of a single subsistence crop (paddy) which accounts for nearly 70 per cent of its gross cropped area. The agricultural technology is Primitive, with little use of 'modern' inputs like chemical fertilisers, HYV seeds etc. There are no large scale or modern industries in the district. The little manufacturing activities that exist are mostly of the primary processing type, carried out in small establishments and households. There is however, rather high incidence of the so-called 'tertiary' activities like …

A New Computer-Oriented Approach To Molecular Mechanics, Donald Greenspan Feb 1982

A New Computer-Oriented Approach To Molecular Mechanics, Donald Greenspan

Mathematics Technical Papers

A new dynamical theory for atomic and molecular dynamics is formulated and discussed. The associated nonlinear differential system is derived from general atomic and molecular stability properties and from aspects of modern particle theory, especially as it relates to the structure of the electron. Computer experiments are described for developing a new model of the water molecule.

Equidistance Relations: A New Bridge Between Geometric And Algebraic Structures, Thomas Q. Sibley Jan 1982

Equidistance Relations: A New Bridge Between Geometric And Algebraic Structures, Thomas Q. Sibley

Mathematics Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the transformations of certain geometric structures into algebraic ones and conversely. The algebraic notion of absolute value corresponds with the geometric one of equidistance. Further, latin squares with absolute values correspond to regular equidistance relations, "near groups" yield 1 point homogenous equidistance relations, and "near commutative groups" yield 2-point homogenous equidistance relations.

Ultrafilter Limits And Finitely Additive Probability, Thomas Q. Sibley Jan 1982

Ultrafilter Limits And Finitely Additive Probability, Thomas Q. Sibley

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Ultrafilter limits provide the natural convergence notion for finitely additive probability. The finitely additive infinitely divisible laws are closed under ultrafilter limits. The characteristic function of any convolution of finitely additive probability measures is the product of their characteristic functions.

Nonmeasurable Sets And Pairs Of Transfinite Sequences, Branko Ćurgus, Harry I. Miller Jan 1982

Nonmeasurable Sets And Pairs Of Transfinite Sequences, Branko Ćurgus, Harry I. Miller

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Many proofs of the fact that there exist Lebesgue nonmeasurable subsets of the real line are known. The oldest proof of this result is due to Vitali [4]. The cosets (under addition) of Q, the set of rational numbers, constitute a partition of the line into an uncountable family of disjoint sets, each congruent to Q under translation, Vitali's proof shows that V is nonmeasurable, if V is a set having one and only one element in common with each of these cosets.

Conjugate Type Boundary Value Problems For Functional-Differential Equations, Paul W. Eloe, Louis J. Grimm Jan 1982

Conjugate Type Boundary Value Problems For Functional-Differential Equations, Paul W. Eloe, Louis J. Grimm

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Two-point boundary value problems (BVPs) for delay differential equations have been studied extensively, beginning with the work of G. A. Kamenskiï, S. B. Norkin and others which was motivated by variational problems and problems in oscillation theory. L. J. Grimm and K. Schmitt and Ju. I. Kovac and L. I. Savcenko employed solutions of various differential inequalities for the study of two-point problems with retarded argument. In this paper, we show how a bilateral iteration procedure can be developed to yield existence and inclusion theorems for multipoint boundary value problems of conjugate type for nonlinear functional-differential equations.

Evidence Of Intrinsic Double Acceptor In Gaas, Phil Won Yu, W. C. Mithel, M. G. Mier, S. S. Li, Weizhen Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Acceptors present in undoped p‐type conducting GaAs have been studied with photoluminescence, temperature‐dependent Hall measurements, deep level transient spectroscopy, and spark source mass spectrometry. It is shown that p‐type conduction is due to presence of the shallow acceptor CAs and the cation antisite double acceptor GaAs. The first and second ionization energies determined for GaAs are 77 and 230 meV from the valence‐band edge.

Sums Of Z-Ideals And Semiprime Ideals, Melvin Henriksen, Frank A. Smith Jan 1982

Sums Of Z-Ideals And Semiprime Ideals, Melvin Henriksen, Frank A. Smith

If B is a ring (or module), and K is an ideal (or submodule) of B, let B(K) = {(a,b) є B x B:a-b є K}. The relationship between ideals (or submodules) of B and those of B(K) is examined carefully, and this construction is used to find a lattice-ordered subring of the ring C(R) of all continuous real-valued functions on the real line R with two z-ideals whose sum is not even semiprime.

Rearrangeable Networks With Limited Depth, Nicholas Pippenger, Andrew C.-C. Yao Jan 1982

Rearrangeable Networks With Limited Depth, Nicholas Pippenger, Andrew C.-C. Yao

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Rearrangeable networks are switching systems capable of establishing simultaneous independent communication paths in accordance with any one-to-one correspondence between their n inputs and n outputs. Classical results show that Ω( n log n ) switches are necessary and that O( n log n ) switches are sufficient for such networks. We are interested in the minimum possible number of switches in rearrangeable networks in which the depth (the length of the longest path from an input to an output) is at most k, where k is fixed as n increases. We show that Ω( n1 + 1/k ) switches …

Some Properties Of Positive Derivations On F-Rings, Melvin Henriksen, Frank A. Smith Jan 1982

Some Properties Of Positive Derivations On F-Rings, Melvin Henriksen, Frank A. Smith

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Throughout A denotes an f-ring; that is, a lattice-ordered ring that is a subdirect union of totally ordered rings. We let D(A) denote the set of derivations D: A --> A such that a ≥ 0 implies Da ≥ 0, and we call such derivations positive. In [CDK], P. Coleville, G. Davis, and K. Keimel initiated a study of positive derivations on f-rings. Their main results are (i) D ε D(A) and A archimedean imply D = 0, and (ii) if A has an identity element 1 and a is the supremum of a set …

Richard Whately And The Revival Of Syllogistic Logic In Great Britain In The Early Nineteenth Century, Calvin Jongsma

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

Richard Whately's Elements of Logic in 1826 marked the end of a dismal era in the history of British logic. His work sparked a revival in Britain, culminating in several distinct developments, none of which, however, Whately contributed to. Yet his work laid the foundation for them by providing a spirited defense of the syllogism and of deductive reasoning generally.

The first chapter begins with a systematic synopsis of the criticisms and responses which were made from the seventeenth to the early nineteenth century. These related primarily to the nature of logic and the epistemic utility of syllogistic reasoning, but …

A Multiobjective Branch-And-Bound Method For Planning Wastewater And Residual Management Systems, Masahisa Nakamura, Suraj M. Alexander, James M. Riley, Robert Simon, Susan Meyer, Kenneth F. Bloemer

KWRRI Research Reports

A multiobjective branch-and-bound algorithm is proposed for use in analysing multiobjective fixed-charge network-flow problems which are found commonly in water resources planning situations. Also proposed is a multiobjective imputed value analysis which makes use of the branch-and-bound tree structure and allows the comparison of the importance of facilities in the network as represented by individual arcs or sets of arcs. The mathematical formulation and the analysis procedure of the method are described, and the potential usefulness of the method is demonstrated using two hypothetical example problems dealing with regional wastewater treatment and residual management systems. A FORTRAN program for implementing …

A Classification Of Certain Graphs With Minimal Imperfection Properties, S. H. Whitesides Jan 1982

A Classification Of Certain Graphs With Minimal Imperfection Properties, S. H. Whitesides

Dartmouth Scholarship

The family of (α, ω) graphs are of interest for several reasons. For example, any minimal counter-example to Berge's Strong Perfect Graph Conjecture belongs to this family. This paper accounts for all (4, 3) graphs. One of these is not obtainable by existing techniques for generating (α + 1, ω) graphs from (α, ω) graphs.
