A New Approach To The Stability Theory Of Functional Differential Systems, G. R. Shendge Jan 1982

A New Approach To The Stability Theory Of Functional Differential Systems, G. R. Shendge

Mathematics Technical Papers

In the study of stability theory for delay differential equations using Lyapunov functions and the theory of differential inequalities, it becomes necessary to choose an appropriate minimal class of functions relative to which [see pdf for notation] is estimated [3]. This approach has recently been recognized [3] as a very natural method in the study of the qualitative behavior of delay differential equations.

Sequential Probability Ratio Tests For The Shape Parameter Of A Nonhomogeneous Poisson Process, Lee J. Bain, Max Engelhardt Jan 1982

Sequential Probability Ratio Tests For The Shape Parameter Of A Nonhomogeneous Poisson Process, Lee J. Bain, Max Engelhardt

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Sequential probability ratio tests for the shape parameter of one or more nonhomogeneous Poisson processes, with power intensity functions, are provided. The tests can be performed when the scale parameter is an unknown nuisance parameter; the effective loss of not knowing the scale parameter is one observation per process. The resulting tests can be expressed in terms of the maximum likelihood estimators of the shape parameters for the usual fixed sample procedure. A further advantage of the present approach is that the scale parameters for different processes, in the multiple sample procedures, need not be equal. Approximations for the operating …

Smallest Cubic And Quartic Graphs With A Given Number Of Cutpoints And Bridges, Gary Chartrand, Farrokh Saba, John K. Cooper Jr., Frank Harary, Curtiss E. Wall

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

For positive integers b and c, with c even, satisfying the inequalities b+1≤c≤2b, the minimum order of a connected cubic graph with b bridges and c cutpoints is computed. Furthermore, the structure of all such smallest cubic graphs is determined. For each positive integer c, the minimum order of a quartic graph with c cutpoints is calculated. Moreover, the structure and number of all such smallest quartic graphs are determined.

Unbounded Functions And Positive Linear-Operators, J. J. Swetits, B. Wood Jan 1982

Unbounded Functions And Positive Linear-Operators, J. J. Swetits, B. Wood

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The approximation of unbounded functions by positive linear operators under multiplier enlargement is investigated. It is shown that a very wide class of positive linear operators can be used to approximate functions with arbitrary growth on the real line. Estimates are given in terms of the usual quantities which appear in the Shisha-Mond theorem. Examples are provided.

Extensions, Generalizations, Characterizations And Testing For Independence Through Infinite Divisibility, Edward Joul Danial Jan 1982

Extensions, Generalizations, Characterizations And Testing For Independence Through Infinite Divisibility, Edward Joul Danial

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation investigates various related topics around the exciting concept: "Infinite Divisibility." First, two intricate distributions, namely, the univariate generalized Waring and the hyper-Poisson are proved to be infinitely and noninfinitely divisible, respectively. Analysis and computer approaches are employed. This itself extends the use of some results introduced by Katti, Steutel and Warde. Secondly, generalizations to Warde, Katti and Steutel's sufficient conditions and related results are achieved. Then, numerical application is presented. Thirdly, characterizations through infinite and finite divisibility are obtained. The Poisson, negative binomial, geometric, Bernoulli and uniform c haracterizations in terms of infinite divisibility are deduced. Some of …

An Approximation Theorem In Shape Theory, Gerard A. Venema

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

In this paper it is shown that if X is a compactum in the interior of a PL manifold M and if U is a neighborhood of X in M, then there is a compactum X′ in U such that X and X′ have the same relative shape in U and the embedding dimension of X′ equals the fundamental dimension of X. Whenever the dimension of M is not equal to three, the relative shape equivalence from X′ to X can be realized by an infinite isotopy of M.

Metrizability And The Frechet-Urysohn Property In Topological Groups, Peter J. Nyikos Dec 1981

Metrizability And The Frechet-Urysohn Property In Topological Groups, Peter J. Nyikos

Faculty Publications

A question of Arhangel'skii, whether weakly first countable topological groups are metrizable, is answered in two ways: if the Hausdorff axiom is assumed, the answer is yes, but in general a weakly first countable topological group need not be pseudometrizable. The former result is obtained as a corollary of a more general sufficient condition for a sequential group to be Fr&chet-Urysohn. A general necessary and sufficient condition for a sequential group to be Frechet-Urysohn is given, and a number of questions are raised. Examples are given to show in what respect the theorems of the paper are the "best possible".

Additive Comparisons Of Stop Rule And Supremum Expectations Of Uniformly Bounded Independent Random Variables, Theodore P. Hill, Robert P. Kertz Nov 1981

Additive Comparisons Of Stop Rule And Supremum Expectations Of Uniformly Bounded Independent Random Variables, Theodore P. Hill, Robert P. Kertz

Research Scholars in Residence

Let XI, X2, . . . be independent random variables taking values in [a, b], and let T denote the stop rules for X1, X2, Then E(supn>1 Xn) - sup{ EXt t ≡ T} < (1/4)(b - a), and this bound is best possible. Probabilistically, this says that if a prophet (player with complete foresight) makes a side payment of (b - a)/8 to a gambler (player using nonanticipating stop rules), the game becomes at least fair for the gambler.

Bifurcation And Total Stability, V. Moauro, M. L. Bertotti Nov 1981

Bifurcation And Total Stability, V. Moauro, M. L. Bertotti

Mathematics Technical Papers

In this paper we are concerned with the problem of bifurcation of invariant sets from an invariant set with respect to a family of flows. In particular, we will suppose that such flows are defined by a one-parameter family of ordinary differential equations: [see pdf for notation] where [see pdf for notation], f is locally Lipschitzian with respect to x, f(µ,0) = 0. As is well known, bifurcation phenomenon is often associated with a drastic change of suitable stability properties. For example, let suppose that the origin 0 of Rn be, with respect to (1), asymptotically stable for µ = …

Existence Of Periodic Solutions Of Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems And The Method Of Upper And Lower Solutions, V. Lakshmikantham, R. Kannan Nov 1981

Existence Of Periodic Solutions Of Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems And The Method Of Upper And Lower Solutions, V. Lakshmikantham, R. Kannan

Mathematics Technical Papers

We study the existence of periodic solutions of second order nonlinear differential equations by combining the method of upper and lower solutions and the method of Alternative problems. Besides including previous results of other authors, we obtain criteria which are easily verifiable. These criteria are in a form that they can be adapted for partial differential equations of parabolic and elliptic type.

Nonuniqueness Criteria For Ordinary Differential Equations, Mansour Samimi Oct 1981

Nonuniqueness Criteria For Ordinary Differential Equations, Mansour Samimi

Mathematics Technical Papers

We consider an initial value problem (1.1) [see pdf for notation] where [see pdf for notation]. Several uniqueness results weaker than a Lipschitz condition are known, see [1,4]. However, results concerning with nonuniqueness criteria are rare. For the case n = 1, a nonuniqueness result was given in [5,6], see also [4]. Very recently the general case was also investigated in [3]. In this paper, we consider nonuniqueness problem from a very general point of view. Our first nonuniqueness result deals with the scalar case which extends the results of [5,6]. It also shows that when the conditions of general …

Long-Time Behavior Of Ginzburg-Landau Systems Far From Equilibrium, Evangelos A. Coutsias, B. A. Huberman Sep 1981

Long-Time Behavior Of Ginzburg-Landau Systems Far From Equilibrium, Evangelos A. Coutsias, B. A. Huberman

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Using singular-perturbation techniques, we study the stability of modulated structures generated by driving Ginzburg-Landau systems far from equilibrium. We show that, far from equilibrium, the steady-state behavior is controlled by an effective Lagrangian which possesses the same functional form as the original free energy but with renormalized coefficients. We study both linear and nonlinear sources and determine their influence on the long-term stability of the bifurcating solutions.

Existence And Monotone Method For Periodic Solutions Of First Order Differential Equations, S. Leela, V. Lakshmikantham Sep 1981

Existence And Monotone Method For Periodic Solutions Of First Order Differential Equations, S. Leela, V. Lakshmikantham

Mathematics Technical Papers

An attempt was made recently in [3] to combine fruitfully the two basic techniques, namely the method of upper and lower solutions and the Lyapunov-Schmitt method to investigate the existence of periodic solutions of second order nonlinear boundary value problems. in this paper, we utilize this fruitful approach to study existence of periodic solutions of first order nonlinear differential equations. We also develope monotone iterative technique for obtaining multiple periodic solutions which are obtained as limits of monotone sequences. Since each member of these sequences is a periodic solution of a linear differential equation of first order which can explicitly …

Error Estimates Of Solutions And Mean Of Solutions Of Stochastic Differential Systems, M. Sambandham, G. S. Ladde Aug 1981

Error Estimates Of Solutions And Mean Of Solutions Of Stochastic Differential Systems, M. Sambandham, G. S. Ladde

Mathematics Technical Papers

Stochastic differential equations are considered. Estimates in terms of statistical properties are given for the difference between the solutions and solutions of the mean of stochastic differential systems. For this purpose necessary theorems are developed and sufficient conditions are given to obtain error estimates. A few examples are worked out to demonstrate the usefulness of the results.

A New Computer Approach To Atomic And Molecular Dynamics With Application To The Water Molecule, Donald Greenspan Jul 1981

A New Computer Approach To Atomic And Molecular Dynamics With Application To The Water Molecule, Donald Greenspan

Mathematics Technical Papers

A new computer oriented theory for atomic and molecular dynamics is developed. In it are incorporated modifications of classical ideas which are motivated by modern particle theory, especially as it relates to the structure of the electron and to the existence of fractional charge. Computer results of a dynamical water molecule model, which are consistent with the bond angle and bond length vibrations of H2O, are described and discussed.
