Toxicokinetics And Metabolism Of Aniline And 4-Chloroaniline In Medaka (Oryzias Latipes), Steven P. Bradbury, Julia M. Dady, Patrick N. Fitzsimmons, Michelle M. Voit, Dean E, Hammermeister, Russell J. Erickson
Steven P. Bradbury
The in vivo toxicokinetics and in vitro hepatic microsomal metabolism of (14C)aniline and (14C)4-chloroaniline in medaka (Oryzias latipes) were investigated to provide a basis upon which to interpret the toxicological responses of small aquarium fish to aniline derivatives. During static aqueous exposures of up to 320 min, parent equivalents failed to reach steady state and results from depuration studies clearly demonstrated biphasic elimination. Due to low elimination rates, 40 to 20% of absorbed aniline and 4-chloroaniline doses, respectively, remained within the fish through 330 min postexposure. Based on an analysis of excreted metabolites, N-acetylation was the dominant route of in …

A Non-Invasive Neurotoxicity Assay Using Larval Medaka, Steven P. Bradbury, Dave Featherstone, Charles D. Drewes, Joel R. Coats
Steven P. Bradbury
We present a method for non-invasive electrophysiological analysis of rapid escape responses in intact, freely behaving larval medaka (Oryzias latipes) before and after short-term exposure to environmental toxicants. Recordings are obtained as a larval medaka swims in a small chamber of water above pairs of recording electrodes etched onto a printed circuit board. When the chamber is briefly vibrated by a sinusoidal pulse from a speaker attached to the grid, a stereotyped Mauthner cell-initiated escape response is evoked. The following parameters were quantified from recordings: 1) Mauthner axon conduction velocity, 2) delay between Mauthner axon spike and motoneuron spike in …

The Dilemma Of Dredging And Dredged Material Disposal In The Aquatic Waters Of Rhode Island And Its Impact On The Regional Marina Industry, Darryl J. Keith
The Dilemma Of Dredging And Dredged Material Disposal In The Aquatic Waters Of Rhode Island And Its Impact On The Regional Marina Industry, Darryl J. Keith
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Since the closures, in 1971, of the Prudence Island and Brenton Reef disposal sites, water-related industries have not had aquatic disposal of dredged sediments as a management option. The marina industry in Rhode Island has been especially impacted as natural sedimentation processes have reduced the water depths at many of these locations and have resulted in the loss of business as operators have been unable to operate their marinas to their fullest potential. The elimination of this option is based on political and environmental concerns over declines in local commercial fisheries which are alleged to be the result of the …
Five Marine Resource Management Programs: Innovations And Common Themes, Louisa Rand Moore
Five Marine Resource Management Programs: Innovations And Common Themes, Louisa Rand Moore
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
This paper investigates essential elements of marine resource management programs, particularly how they are initiated and what is needed for their success. The focus of this paper is on management planning for sites where marine resources are still largely intact as opposed to those which are severely disturbed. Planning is aimed at determining carrying capacity of the marine systems and limiting disturbances accordingly. Question for this inquiry were developed from research of a bay in eastern Maine where marine resources have not been severely disturbed, but are vulnerable to over-exploitation due to lack of coordinated management. Using these questions, five …
Linking Management And Markets: The Northwest Atlantic Sea Herring Industry And The Case For "Regional" Quotas, Peter Jessup Moore
Linking Management And Markets: The Northwest Atlantic Sea Herring Industry And The Case For "Regional" Quotas, Peter Jessup Moore
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
This review and characterization of the U.S. Atlantic sea herring fishery and industry analyzes opportunities for and constraints to developing the herring resource more fully. Chapter 1 describes the herring resource, the existing fishery, and reviews current research into the international transboundary migrations of the Atlantic sea herring. Chapters 2 and 3 describe the development of the herring fishery management plan in the context of the global herring market and the management complications that arise from the transboundary migrations of the stocks. Examples of successful linkages between fisheries management and market development are described in Chapter 4 to illustrate the …
Towards A Regional Coastal Zone Management Program In The Oecs, Keith E. Nichols
Towards A Regional Coastal Zone Management Program In The Oecs, Keith E. Nichols
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The Islands of the Lesser Antilles are described as "truly archipelagic, enjoying the characteristic features of both oceanic and coastal islands." Once considered pristine and far removed from the influences of pollution from coastal areas, they are now faced with the realities of their own solid waste problems, resource degradation and over-exploitation, as well as human health impacts from contaminated rivers and coastal areas. Each of these territories can be considered packages of economic, political and cultural networks, attempting to provide for individual and nationwide needs while seeking economic growth and self-sufficiency. If developed properly and used in tandem with …

Albany Harbours Sampling Program - Experiences, Myths And The Need For Standards, David Weaver
Albany Harbours Sampling Program - Experiences, Myths And The Need For Standards, David Weaver
Conference papers and presentations
Making accurate and precise estimations of pollutant loadings is becoming more important as our waterways suffer from increased inputs of pollutants and as statutory requirements to meet target loads are established. The most studied pollutant in waterways in WA is phosphorus (P) since it is reported to be the stimulus for algal growth. Many reports publish nutrient load data without any discussion of potential errors in sampling, chemical analysis or load calculations, or any discussion of the assumptions made and conclusions drawn from those calculations. The result can be the adoption of incorrect sampling, analytical and calculation procedures, leading ultimately …

The purpose of this project was to conduct a systematic inventory of rare plant species on the Pine Ridge District of the Nebraska National Forest. The objective of the inventory was to locate rare plant occurrences and compile information on their location, status and any possible threats. Four areas within the Pine Ridge District were identified as priority areas for the inventory fieldwork. The four tracts included the Soldier Creek Wilderness Area, a tract encompassing the East and West Ash Creek drainages, a middle unit tract, and a tract which straddles U.S. Highway 385 and encompasses a number of timber …
Southern Nevada Effluent Wetlands: A Proposed Cooperative Venture Between The Bureau Of Reclamation & City Of Las Vegas, Bureau Of Reclamation
Southern Nevada Effluent Wetlands: A Proposed Cooperative Venture Between The Bureau Of Reclamation & City Of Las Vegas, Bureau Of Reclamation
Publications (WR)
Throughout North America there is a growing interest in constructed wetlands, both as relatively inexpensive, low-maintenance systems for removing nutrients from wastewater, and as a means of using municipal wastewater to enhance wildlife habitat and create public use opportunities. Because wetlands appear to have good potential as a component in the overall management of scarce water resources, the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) has undertaken several cooperative research and demonstration projects to evaluate their effectiveness in a variety of local environments.
While a number of projects have demonstrated that wetlands can be beneficially employed to improve water quality, few such projects …

Status Of The Public Oyster Resource Of Virginia - Fall 1992, Bruce J. Barber
Reports
oysters have been harvested from Virginia waters as long as humans have i):'lhabited the area. Depletion of natural stocks in the late 1880's led to the establishment of regulations by public fisheries agencies. A survey of bottom areas in which oysters grew naturally was completed in 1896 under the direction of Lt. Baylor, USN. These areas (over 243,000 acres) were set aside by legislative action for public use and have come to be known as the Baylor survey Grounds or Public oyster Grounds of Virginia, and are presently administered by the Virginia Marine Resources commission (VMRC). Twice a year the …
