The Prediction Of Lake Huron Lake-Effect Snowfall Systems, Kenneth F. Dewey Jan 1975

The Prediction Of Lake Huron Lake-Effect Snowfall Systems, Kenneth F. Dewey

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Data was collected during the 1971-72 snowfall season for the Lake Huron basin. The bulk aerodynamic approach, as formulated by Priestly, was utilized to estimate the daily average flux of heat and moisture over the lake. It was hypothesized that discriminant analysis could be employed to determine the threshold value (discriminant index) of the energy flux which is necessary for the occurrence of the lake-effect snowfall system. To determine the validity of this threshold value, the discriminant index was applied to a series of historical data. The results of this analysis indicated that the discriminant index could be utilized to …

Raising Wood Ducks, Richard L. Nelson

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

Numbered among Nature's most colorful creatures, wood ducks willingly accept a helping hand from man in establishing new homes. These birds adapt well to suitable habitat, and you can play an important part in bringing the wood duck to locations where they do not now nest. For groups or individuals who are willing to expend the effort necessary to undertake a wood duck restoration project anti see it to completion, it is an exceptional gift from today's generation to those of decades and centuries to come. Many areas in Nebraska provide suitable wood duck habitat, but do not have a …

Oyster Spatfall On Shellstrings In Virginia Rivers: 1974 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall

Reports

Oyster setting levels in m9st Virginia river systems are still far below those which commonly occurred prior to 1960. However, the 1974 season showed continuing improvement since 1972 when Tropical Storm Agnes raged through the Chesapeake Bay region, creating adverse environmental conditions which were largely responsible for the lowest setting levels on record. Data for 1973, as well as for 1971 and 1972 are included in this summary for comparison with the 1974 setting season. Setting information is obtained through surveys conducted weekly by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) from June through early October, with assistance of personnel …

Legal Symposium On Wetlands: An Executive Summary, Roger D. Anderson, David Garten, Ted Smolen

Reports

In 1969 the Virginia Institute of Marine Science published a report stating that although marshlands represented only one-half of one percent of the total area of the state, 95 percent of Virginia 's annual harvest of sport and commercial fisheries were dependent to some degree upon these valuable wetlands . The report went on to urge some form of public control over these vital areas in order to relieve some of the pressures created by dredging, filling, diking and bulkheading.

Recognizing the need to address this issue, the 1971 General Assembly passed House Joint Resolution Number 60, creating a Wetlands …

The European Economic Community: Example Of Regionalization Of The Sea?, B. Deniaux Jul 1974

The European Economic Community: Example Of Regionalization Of The Sea?, B. Deniaux

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The European Law and power has not such a world-wide application nowadays, and it is rather against the rules created by the old European order that the nations formed during the second part of this century have begun a rebellion process. One can address the following questions: what exactly is nowadays the action of the European Community at sea: is there a common policy of the common Market toward marine related problems? If there is one, what is the actual impact of this policy at the international level, and especially these days, in regards of the Law of the Sea …

The Dilemma Of Deep Ocean Mining, Paul W. Dillingham Jr. Apr 1974

The Dilemma Of Deep Ocean Mining, Paul W. Dillingham Jr.

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Mineral substances and materials derived from them, whether in the form of fuels, construction materials, metals for farbication, tools, chemicals, or fertilizers, are the foundation of our technological civilization. The modern industrial civilization depends upon the continued availability of mineral raw materials. The problem is not one of actual scarcity ; the raw materials are there in the ground and in the sea in great supply. The question and the uncertainty is economic; How will these resources be recovered and by whom? This proposition becomes the central force in order to adjust to the new resources climate.

Virginia And The Outer Continental Shelf : Problems, Possibilities, And Posture, The Committee

Reports

The Outer Continental Shelf Advisory Committee was \ established.by the Secretary of Commerce and Resources, Earl J. Shiflet, in July, 1974. This action was taken based upon the realization that the Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) was a likely area for the development of offshore oil and gas resources, and that such development could have profound and far reaching impacts upon the Commonwealth. Such impacts could either be beneficial or detrimental or both, depending greatly upon the preparations made by the Commonwealth beforehand. Accordingly, Secretary Shiflet charged the OCS Advisory Committee to consider all facets of the situation, and to …

The Gulf-Atlantic Waterway: Instrument To Increase Profit Margins In The Jacksonville Area, Jacksonville Area Chamber Of Commerce Research Department, Jay A. Smith

Waterways and wildlife

The purpose of this report is to reassess the economic value that the Gulf-Atlantic Waterway will have on Duval county. This will show the direct relationship on the Port and the indirect benefits to other segments in our economy. This is needed for three reasons: 1. The last economic study was completed by the Corps of Engineers with the assistance of Arthur D. Little, Inc., a national consulting firm, in 1962. So, it has been almost twelve years since an economic report has been started from scratch. 2. The economic reports in the past have been mainly concerned with cost/benefit, …

The Mediterranean Coast Of Israel: A Planner's Approach, Sophia Professorsky Dec 1973

The Mediterranean Coast Of Israel: A Planner's Approach, Sophia Professorsky

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The coastal zone of Israel is facing an ever-growing pressure of varied and conflicting land uses. Spreading urbanization, from Nahariya in the north to Ashkelon in the south, gnaws agricultural areas; the needs for commercial ports and industrial plants stand in conflict with recreational uses of the seashore and, as described before, the natural conditions of land shelf structure, topography and climate, are favourable for both industry and residence so that the narrow stretch of the coastal zone attracts more and more of them.

Channel Improvements, New London, Connecticut: A Case Study, E. L. Gallup

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is one of the largest single Federal agencies involved in the planning, design and construction of public waterborne transportation facilities. A critical review of a typical corps of Engineers survey report on the improvements to a harbor should provide an insight to the means of allocating the costs and benefits resulting from government expenditures. The purpose of this paper is to review this process using as a vehicle the proposed improvements to the navigation channel at New London, Connecticut
